    Rock Of 76, 86,96

The year was 1976 or was it 86 or even 96 , there was great music to be heard throughout the land. And we have on this episode of Rock Phoenix Live. If you are wondering what the sound was back in 1976,1986 and 1996 then give this show a listen because it will fill you in and so you can have a knowledgeable conversation with people older than you if your a millennial. Or if you know about the 1976 already then listen because it will take you back. Personally I dig the 96 music, better sound. But hey the 90's got their music from the 80's and the 80's got their music from the 70's so its a learning curve. Happy Listening and Rock On  Together As One Around The World.

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E34

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E34

S6E34 went out live on 24 Aug 2023 at 19h00 on Rebel Rock Radio.  Broadcasting out of Benoni, east of Johannesburg in the sinking pit of corruption and incompetence formally known as South Africa.  Ok, it’s not that bad, just having a laugh, sort of.  The show kicked off with Bad Company and a classic track called 'Movin’ On'.  We stayed with the classic rock for a while and then built in some US Punk, a bit of ‘80s metal and some grunge.  We had SA rock, Aussie rock, US and European rock, there is pretty much something for every rock fan here.  You can see who was on the show below in the artists' featured list.

Check out the short 5-minute interview with Jackson Colt the SA shred guitarist who is giving us some awesome ‘80s style guitar-driven metal.  The Immortals this week featured 'Stargazer' a track off Rainbow’s incredibly good Rising album.  Clocking in at just over 8 min it was a worthy addition to the hallowed halls of The Immortals.

The Diabolical Challenge is about 2 hours in and it features four albums from 1992:

Alice in Chains – Dirt (Godsmack)

Pantera – Vulgar Display of Power (Mouth For War)

Iron Maiden – Afraid To Shoot Strangers (Afraid To Shoot Strangers)

Megadeth - Countdown to Extinction.  (Countdown to Extinction)

Check out the last half hour where we featured a cover of the Zager and Evans track 'In the Year 2525' by metal monsters Philistine, their debut album Seranim is out now.  We ended the show with the phenomenally good Diverted Disorder, a band out of the Vaal area.  Their track 'Tainted'.   Check out their debut album Technical Difficulties.

Artists featured:  Bad Company, Bachman Turner Overdrive, Accept, Social Distortion, Anti-Flag, Velvet Revolver, W.A.S.P., Tony Martin, Temple of the Dog, Pearl Jam, Audioslave, Saxon, Def Leppard, Cold Chisel, The Angels, The Cult U2, Jackson Colt, David Lee Roth, Tom Petty, The Pretty Reckless, Danko Jones, ACDC, Rainbow, Alice In Chains, Pantera, Iron maiden, Megadeth, Philistine, Motörhead, Grand Funk Railroad, Boston, Airbourne, Tom waits, Diverted Disorder

Ep. 189: Grave Mistake: DANKO JONES Shoulda Been Huge!!! Pt.2

Ep. 189: Grave Mistake: DANKO JONES Shoulda Been Huge!!! Pt.2

This week we present another installment of our ongoing series called “Grave Mistakes: They Shoulda Been Huge!!!”. This band is a true treasure from the Great White North that plays mean power chords and punch-you-in-the-mouth rock n’ roll! The lead singer and guitarist is a swaggering rock n’ roll force to be reckoned with… Twenty-Seven years into their career at this point, but most Americans don’t know him or his amazing band. That is a travesty. Guess who’s back??? Say his name and say it loud like it’s a hit song… DANKO JONES!!!

This episode is rooted in our Should Have Been category. We are starting with Part 2 of a 2-part episode because Kevin just wanted to do so… It’s his show and he’s an idiot, so let him have it. Hopefully, we can turn you on to this “other” amazing Canadian power trio. What is it with Canada and power trios anyway? Have a listen and find out for yourself! Rawwwwk!

    Songs this week include:

    1. Danko Jones – “Get Up” from Rock And Roll Is Black And Blue (2012)
    2. Danko Jones – “Gonna Be A Fight Tonight” from Fire Music (2015)

Ep. 150: Election Day Of The Dead

With the beginning of November comes 2 major events here in the US that we decided to Frankenstein together… Hence, Election Day Of The Dead! Join us as we wax poetically about political wax. No matter what side you are on (the ass, the pachyderm, or the angry anarchist), we can all come together to celebrate those that have passed on and rock out to some politically charged rock n’ punk n’ metal!

What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection; an artist, album, or collection of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. Robert is forced to test his endurance and provide feedback, as he has no idea what he will be subjected to every week. Our hope is that we turn you on to something that was lost on your ears, or something you've simply forgotten about, or that (in our opinion) should have been the next big thing.

Casey Royer (Social Distortion, Detours, Adolescents, DI, Radolescents)

Back when Casey Royer was a young lad living at home, his good friend Mike Ness stayed with him for a brief stint.  Being bored young teenagers they decided to start a band in Casey’s bedroom called Social Distortion.  On this episode, Casey brings in a cassette tape with a band practice song from the first iteration of the band Social Distortion.  The recorded song on the tape is called Total Control with Mike Ness on guitar, Casey Royer on drums and Tom Corvin on vocals.  Casey also dives into talking about the Detours, Adolescents, Radolescents, and, of course, DI.  So, sit back, grab your favorite beverage and enjoy a little bit of Orange County punk rock history.

Ep. 99: Famous Ghost Stories From Rock n' Punk n' Metal

Ep. 99: Famous Ghost Stories From Rock n' Punk n' Metal

This week’s show is the final frightful installment of our month-long celebration of the Halloween season. We also celebrate 2-years of existence!!! We hope you love this episode to death… There are some frightfully spooktacular songs on this episode that will raise the hairs on the back of your neck and nether regions! Happy Halloween everyone!

What is it we do here at InObscuria? In the beginning, good always overpowered the evils of all man's sins... But in time the nations grew weak, and our cities fell to slums while evil stood strong. In the dusts of hell, lurked the blackest of hates. For he whom they feared awaited them... Now many many lifetimes later lay destroyed beaten down and only the corpses of rebels, ashes of dreams, and bloodstained streets remain... It has been written"Those who have the youth, have the future". So, come now children of the beast; be strong and shout at the devil!

The Story of Rock and Roll: S4E26

The Story of Rock and Roll: S4E26

Episode 26 of Season 4 is the high point of the year as far as I am concerned, it aired at 7 pm on 1 July 2021.  E26 marks the halfway mark of the year and the joyous news of our ex-president's impending incarceration.  It is also the only show so far to clock in at exactly 3 hours (and 15 seconds) and causing the most perfect switch over between me and the going 'back to the studio'. switchover.  We kicked off with Megadeth and their Rust in Peace classic 'Hanger 18'.  It made sense to stay with the trash heavyweights of the world and we followed with Metallica and 'Creeping Death'.  Next up The Raven Age off their album Darkness Will Rise and this led to a brief discussion of a slight glimmer of hope for SA as Jacob Zuma goes to jail for 15 months for contempt.  We celebrated with Prison Bound by Social Distortion and some optimism in the form of Bon Jovi's 'Keep The Faith'.

There were plenty of big names, we heard from Van Halen, ACDC, W.A.S.P.,  Scorpions, Iron Maiden, and Judas Priest.  The highlight for me, other than all the Zuma jibes, was Skid Row with a track off  United World Rebellion- Chapter One called  'This is Killing Me'.  It is an incredibly good song made all the more poignant by the sad passing of Johnny Solinger, the vocalist on the track earlier this week.  Largely ignored, these last two Skid Row albums shine, RIP Johnny.  We checked out a band I have just discovered this week, Seven Thorns out of Denmark, and their track 'Black Fortress'.  Check out the guitar work about 3 minutes in.  We also got a dose of what would happen if Marilyn Manson replaced Till Lindemann in Rammstein by listening to his vocals on Emigrate's second album Silent So Long.

New stuff from Buckcherry, SA stuff from The Burning and Prime Circle, Punk from Sham 69 and The Jam, and oldies from Python Lee Jackson with 'In a Broken Dream'.  There were lots of dedications to listeners and as I said a huge celebration about Zuma's impending incarceration.  I let The Boss, Bruce Springsteen, have the final word for Zuma with When You're Alone.  It may well be the most perfect radio show I have ever done :-).

Artists featured:  Megadeth, Metallica, The Raven Age, Social Distortion, Van Halen, Cinderella, Python Lee Jackson, W.A.S.P., ACDC, The Burning, We Are Harlot, Bon Jovi, Prime Circle, Oasis, Clutch, Thin Lizzy Emigrate, Seven Thorns, Children of Bodom, Skid Row, Scorpions, Tom Petty, Buckcherry, Danko Jones, Dirty Honey, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Hollywood, Vampires, Sham 69, The Jam, Type O Negative, Avenged Sevenfold, Nickelback, Papa Roach, Airbourne, Bruce Springsteen

The Story of Rock and Roll: S3E11

The Story of Rock and Roll: S3E11

29 October 2020 at 7 pm was the date and time that Episode 11 of season 3 of The Story of Rock and Roll aired.   It was quite a show, unusually chatty and with only one little balls-up which I left in there in the interests of reality. Don't adjust your set after Iced Earth's 'Burning Times' it just takes me 30 seconds to twig that the mic wasn't on :-)  The joys of live radio.

It was a very lively show with plenty of people chatting on the Discord server and on Whatsapp.  We kicked off with 'Majestic' the traditional Journey opener but instead of more Journey, we cracked on with Metallica and Dio.  I started the local stuff early with another track off Johnathan Martin's amazing album Into The Nebulous Night.  Following up with Jack Hammer just made sense.  Punk happened in the form of The Stranglers and The Clash and there was plenty of classic metal and rock such as Iron maiden with 'The Trooper' and Judas priest with 'Hell Bent For Leather'.

The highlight for me was Bruce Springsteen with 'If I Was the Priest', as I said he's not called The Boss for nothing.  We also learned how to pronounce Bonamassa and took a listen to a track off his new album called 'Royal Tea'.   All in all, it was good fun and we had a lot of laughs.  Oh P.S. if any of you eve read this I'd like to know because I am not sure if I am wasting my time :-)

Artists featured:  Ozzy Osbourne, Journey, Metallica, Dio, The Cult, Social Distortion, Wolfmother, White Zombie, Johnathan Martin, Jack Hammer, Iron Maiden, Iced Earth, Audioslave, L.A. Guns, Bullet For My Valentine, the Clash, The Stranglers, Armored Saint, Joe Bonamassa, Blue Oyster Cult, Sixx A.M. Pearl Jam, Zakk Wylde, Bruce Springsteen, The Burning, Cold Chisel, Van Halen, Judas Priest. Jorn, Fokofpolisiekar, Kiss, Hanoi Rocks, the Black Crowes, Motörhead.

The Story of Rock and Roll: Episode 19

The Story of Rock and Roll: Episode 19

Episode 19 of TSORR went live at midnight on 10 May 2019.  It's probably the first show that had a mellow start in the form of ACDC's Rock 'n' Roll Ain't Noise pollution. The audience reaction to this episode was excellent on the Whatsapp line.  That was good to know as it was probably the most diverse show I have done so far.  It ranged from Joe Jackson to Metallica, Alice In Chains to Sheryl Crow.  Beware that Joe Jackson will get stuck in your head :-)

I played a lot of lesser known stuff, bands like Wilson, Kris Barras Band,  Bullet Boys, Los Labios & Black Spiders along with the usual heavy weights Dio, Van Halen, Metallica, Black Sabbath & ACDC.  SA music was represented by Aking and it was great to hear Johnny Is Nie Dood Nie, the Koos Kombuis classic, if you have ever been at a festival where he has played that you will know how wonderful it is, goosebumps.
