174: Behind the Music Videos | Volume 1

The time has come. I finally recorded an episode on my own. A first time here on the show. It was hard deciding although I did do an internet poll and  'top music videos of the 90s' won.

This took me a while to get in the mood to do but I selected these videos not really as random but as a good representation of all these varying types of narratives that I loved in videos during my teenage years. I did some behind the scenes research and cruised some message boards to dig deeper. I basically talk about what these meant to me at a time when the art of the music video meant so much.

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E34

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E34

S6E34 went out live on 24 Aug 2023 at 19h00 on Rebel Rock Radio.  Broadcasting out of Benoni, east of Johannesburg in the sinking pit of corruption and incompetence formally known as South Africa.  Ok, it’s not that bad, just having a laugh, sort of.  The show kicked off with Bad Company and a classic track called 'Movin’ On'.  We stayed with the classic rock for a while and then built in some US Punk, a bit of ‘80s metal and some grunge.  We had SA rock, Aussie rock, US and European rock, there is pretty much something for every rock fan here.  You can see who was on the show below in the artists' featured list.

Check out the short 5-minute interview with Jackson Colt the SA shred guitarist who is giving us some awesome ‘80s style guitar-driven metal.  The Immortals this week featured 'Stargazer' a track off Rainbow’s incredibly good Rising album.  Clocking in at just over 8 min it was a worthy addition to the hallowed halls of The Immortals.

The Diabolical Challenge is about 2 hours in and it features four albums from 1992:

Alice in Chains – Dirt (Godsmack)

Pantera – Vulgar Display of Power (Mouth For War)

Iron Maiden – Afraid To Shoot Strangers (Afraid To Shoot Strangers)

Megadeth - Countdown to Extinction.  (Countdown to Extinction)

Check out the last half hour where we featured a cover of the Zager and Evans track 'In the Year 2525' by metal monsters Philistine, their debut album Seranim is out now.  We ended the show with the phenomenally good Diverted Disorder, a band out of the Vaal area.  Their track 'Tainted'.   Check out their debut album Technical Difficulties.

Artists featured:  Bad Company, Bachman Turner Overdrive, Accept, Social Distortion, Anti-Flag, Velvet Revolver, W.A.S.P., Tony Martin, Temple of the Dog, Pearl Jam, Audioslave, Saxon, Def Leppard, Cold Chisel, The Angels, The Cult U2, Jackson Colt, David Lee Roth, Tom Petty, The Pretty Reckless, Danko Jones, ACDC, Rainbow, Alice In Chains, Pantera, Iron maiden, Megadeth, Philistine, Motörhead, Grand Funk Railroad, Boston, Airbourne, Tom waits, Diverted Disorder

Episode 24 - GRUNGE MONTH 2 | Mother Love Bone vs Temple Of The Dog

Episode 24 - GRUNGE MONTH 2 | Mother Love Bone vs Temple Of The Dog

Jason and Imran conclude their second grunge exploration and their trilogy of battles with Hannah with Mother Love Bone - Apple vs Temple Of The Dog - Temple Of The Dog, where it all began.
Apple is the only full length studio album Mother Love Bone ever released as days before dropping, frontman, Andrew Wood died from an overdose. In tribute, Soundgarden singer, Chris Cornell (also a roommate of Wood's) got together with surviving members of the band, plus recruiting Mick McCready and Eddie Vedder, the future Pearl Jam, to comprise the seminal Temple Of The Dog album.

    Who wins this one?

The Story of Rock and Roll: S4E41

The Story of Rock and Roll: S4E41

Episode 41 of Season 4 contained 40 songs which is probably a record for the show.  It aired at 19h00 on 15 Oct 2021.  It was a fairly joyous affair, we had no load shedding and I got my car back from the garage, I think the mood permeated the show.

We kicked off with Black Spiders out of Sheffield and then checked out Craig Goldies, ex Dio's, band Ressurection Kings from their 2016 release of the same name.  We pulled in some big guns in the form of W.A.S.P.  and Skid Row and then took in two in a row with Chris Cornell on vocals. The early stuff was taken care of by Mott the Hoople, The Rolling Stones, and The Who.  There was some commentary around the fact that the Stones have dropped 'Brown Sugar' from their new live set supposedly because of pressure from the politically correct.  I played 'Some Girls' to highlight the Overton Window.  The Who sounded great with '1921' off Tommy.

We checked out the new Black Label society track off the new album Doom Crew Inc which will probably be called Doom Squad forever on TSORR.   A highlight for me was the new Joe Bonamassa release called 'Time Clocks'.  I had a bit to say about the amount of hate Joe gets these days and highlighted the fact that this song is an anthem.  Give it time to grow on you, Joe is amazing, I am grateful he keeps giving us an album a year where most artists keep us waiting 5 or more years.

We went to the UK for 4 tracks, especially enjoyable was Death of the Clown by Dave Davies.  SA music was taken care of by Blue Scream, L.A. Cobra, and The Color Blew.  Blue Scream, was a Tully McCulley project with Roger Kaye and Robin Gallagher involved.  You can read more about the band and Roger in The Story of Rock and Roll, he was a hell of a character.  We hit the home straight with the two Toms, Petty and Waits, and an almost country and western track from Lynyrd Skynyrd off the God and Guns album.  Special shout out to In Flames and Trivium for bringing the heavy.  The New Trivium In The Court of The Dragon is stellar.

Artists featured:  Black Spiders, Resurrection Kings, Smith / Kotzen, W.A.S.P., Skid Row, Audioslave, Temple of the Dog, Jorn, Wolfmother, The White Stripes, Live, King Kobra, Mott the Hoople, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Whitesnake, Baton Rouge, Extreme, The Eagles, L7, The Pretty Reckless, Black Label Society, The L.A. Maybe, Loverboy, In Flames, Trivium, Joe Bonamassa, Seether, Oasis, Dave Davies, Stiff Little Fingers, The Dogs D’Amour, Blue Scream, L.A.Cobra, The Color Blew, Alice Cooper, Tom Waits, Tom Petty, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Halestorm, The Lazys

1991 - April: Temple of the Dog “Temple of the Dog”

1991 - April: Temple of the Dog “Temple of the Dog”

In the aftermath of the death of Andrew Wood, lead singer of alternative rock bands Malfunkshun and Mother Love Bone, a supergroup was formed in tribute called Temple of the Dog and they released an album of the same name. Soundgarden's front man Chris Cornell had been Andrew Woods’ roommate previously, and wrote several songs inspired by Wood.  After returning to Seattle from a tour with Soundgarden, Cornell approached Stone Gossard (rhythm guitar) and Jeff Arment (bass) of Mother Love Bone about collaborating.  Temple of the dog was rounded out with Mike McCready (guitar), Matt Cameron (drums), and another singer — Eddie Vedder, who was in town to audition with a group soon to be known as Pearl Jam.

Temple of the Dog was recorded in 15 days at the end of 1990, and totally produced by the band.  There were no expectations from the record company, making the recording process a lot more relaxed for band members.  The album was released in April 1991 and initially sold 70,000 copies.  After the artists split company, going to Soundgarden and the newly-formed Pearl Jam, the record company realized that this collaboration between the two bands was a real gem, and they gave the album new interest with promotion in the summer of 1992.

In retrospect the album and collaboration would receive much critical praise, but the most important aspect of the project was that the group agreed that Andy Wood would have really liked the songs.

We hope you enjoy this early grunge collaboration.

    Say Hello 2 Heaven
This was a single from the album and one of two songs Chris Cornell wrote in tribute to Andrew Wood while he was on tour with Soundgarden.  Cornell's vocals are distinctive, though this song is a bit of a departure from what you would typically hear from grunge in general and Soundgarden in particular.

    Reach Down
This blues-inspired song is perhaps a deeper cut from the album, and is the second song Cornell wrote as a tribute to Wood while on tour before forming Temple of the Dog.   It is the second track on the album and contains a long guitar solo tribute from Mike McCready.

    Pushin' Forward Back
This driving song in 7/4 time is the second single released from the album, and it has a proto-Pearl Jam feel to it.  "Gracious mother held me to her breast until the day I started pushin'."

    Hunger Strike
Perhaps the most popular song on the album, this single is a duet between Cornell and Vedder.  The lyrics are an anti-capitalist rant against want.  The song and video was re-released after the popularity of Pearl Jam was established.

    ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:

Theme from the television series "Dinosaurs"
This family-oriented sitcom was released by Jim Henson productions, and had puppets and people dressed as dinosaurs.

    STAFF PICKS:

    “Groovy Train” by The Farm
Wayne takes us to one of his favorite music spots, Manchester, for this staff pick.  The Farm were actually from Liverpool, and the song reached number 6 on the UK charts.  This was the first single from their debut album, Spartacus.

    “Lift Me Up” by Yes
Rob demonstrates once again that all roads lead to Yes, in this case a lot of members of Yes.  The song is from the album Union, and it was their last hit single. Unfortunately, although Arista records was able to bring the group back together, they just couldn't stay together.  The song is about a homeless person seeking help.

“Just the Way It Is, Baby” by The Rembrandts
Bruce's staff pick features a duo of Danny Wilde and Phil Solem.  This Rembrandts hit tells the story of a girl who is just using a boy.  When she realizes her mistake later on the tables are turned, because the boy has moved on.  The Rembrandts are best known for the theme song to the television series "Friends."

“Show Me the Way” by Styx
Brian finishes the staff picks this week with a late hit from Styx while Dennis DeYoung was in and Tommy Shaw was out. This song was penned by DeYoung as a prayer during a crisis of faith.  It went to number 3 on the charts, giving Styx hits across three decades. .

    LAUGH TRACK:

“Ordinary Average Guy” by Joe Walsh
Joe Walsh parodies his earlier hit “Life's Been Good,” with a song about living a boring, average, ordinary life.

The Story of Rock and Roll: S3E10

The Story of Rock and Roll: S3E10

Season 3 Episode 10 of The Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show was broadcast on 23 October 2020 at 7 pm.  There was a quick recovery from a botched intro and we were off and running with Guns ‘n’ Roses’ controversial masterpiece ‘One in a Million’.  That was followed up with some Deep Purple and then, into the lesser-known with Fozzy and Catalano.  I reckon this was the most diverse TSORR ever aired, I even played The Smith’s for the first time ever, and I took flak on the Discord server for that J.  I made amends with the brand new Heathen called Empire of the Blind towards the end of the show.

We took a listen to Bruce Springsteen’s new track ‘Ghosts’ for the second time in 3 weeks just because it is so good.  It’s definitely my song of the year, impossible to be in a bad mood when listening to that little bit of upliftment.  The Punk was taken care of by The Damned and The Exploited with a bit of Billy Bragg and The Boomtown Rats thrown in for good measure.  The Grunge part was really cool with ‘Put You Down’ off Alice in Chains’ debut album Facelift.  We followed with yet another track off Redux, The Brendon O’Brien remix of Pearl Jam’s masterpiece Ten.  A highlight for me was Temple of the Dog ‘s ‘Wooden Jesus’ Chris Cornell was amazing on that.

We checked out the brand new Blue Öyster Cult which is great and the new Heathen and then we slapped in some Francois Van Coke and finished off with Kid Rocks’ Trucker Anthem.   I'd had a hell of a week as I mentioned a few times and I invented 'Bungle Time and gave it a theme song, see if you can relate :-)  Go to The Story of Rock and Roll on Facebook for any comments about that.

Artists featured:  Kid Rock, Temple of the Dog, Joe Bonamassa, Thin Lizzy, The Killers, ACDC, Heathen, Catalano, Guns ‘n’ Roses, Francois Van Coke, Five Finger Death Punch, Buckcherry, Poison, Pearl Jam, The Raven Age, The Exploited, My Chemical Romance, Bruce Springsteen, Texas Hippie Coalition, The Damned, Blue Öyster Cult, The Gaslight Anthem, Fozzy, Autograph, Ozzy Osbourne, Chickenfoot, The Cruel Sea, The Smiths, Def Leppard, The Burning, Alice in Chains, The Boomtown Rats, Tom Petty, Deadline, Tesla, Van Halen, Billy Bragg, Skid Row, Deep Purple.

Ep. 10: Corbin Reiff, Author of Total F*cking Godhead: The Biography of Chris Cornell

Two people who revere Chris Cornell (both with the last name Silver) pick the brain of the man who authored the late Soundgarden and Audioslave singer’s hot-off-the-presses biography, exploring stories and backstory and everything in between. In fulfilling the promise he made to himself as a teenager to rock to the bitter end, Cornell endured turmoil and tragedy--and left behind an incredible legacy. Reiff, a former Army Sgt. who served in Iraq, fills us in on some of the juiciest details while putting up with interludes about Mike’s travails as Dennis Rodman’s co-author and Natalie’s pregame hype music as a youth soccer standout.
