The David Hunter Perspective - 2024-03-06

Read on for today's agenda below prepared by David (thank you very much). - Retired US Diplomat to 5 different nations  David Hunter shares his knowledge, passion, interest, and experience.

1)Shell Games--- Running Out Of Ammo?: The 155 mm artillery shell is in big demand. The Ukraine army has been begging for more of these shells, which they fire at rate of about 5,000 per day against invading Russian troops. Israel has also been seeking these same 155 mm shells for it's fight in Gaza against Hamas. So US military stockpiles are going down quickly. Do we have enough shells for both?

2)Is Israel Using Starvation as A Weapon of War in Gaza?: The UN reports half-million Gaza citizens are starving, and all 1.8 million are at high risk of food insecurity. Many only have one meal per day, including young infants. There is no milk formula. Israel's troops even fired on food delivery convoys last week in Gaza City, killing over 112 desperate civilians. Is Israel engaged in using starvation as a weapon of war against Gaza civilians?

3)Did Trump Break International Law By Establishing our US Embassy in Jerusalem?: East Jerusalem is part of the West Bank, an area designated at conclusion of 1967 War to be Palestine territory. It was to become the capitol of a new Palestinian State. But such statehood was delayed and Israel started building settlements in the West Bank territory of E. Jerusalem and building a 'self defense' wall. President Trump 'officially' moved the US Embassy to Jerusalem May 14, 2018, and recognizing it as the capitol of the Israeli state. Did this action violate international law?

4)The Right to Wage War?: Under the UN Charter, sovereign states are prohibited from waging war on their neighbors, unless under clear principle of 'self defense' or in pursuing a UN Security Council resolution. But is the UN Security Council becoming weakened by states rejecting its resolutions, even accusing it of political bias? If so, what impact will that have on states future rights to wage wars and on global security?

1)Two Year Anniversary of the Beginning of Russian War With Ukraine?: On Feb. 24th, 2022, Russia launched a massive invasion of Ukraine. In first weeks, it looked like the capitol Kiev would fall. But President Zenensky rallied his people, who are fighting for freedom and independence from Russian slavery. Has the two year fight been worth it? And what do you think will happen this coming year?

2)What Would US Policy Be on North Korea Under A New Trump Administration? If Trump wins in 2024, will we face a return of Trump's old love-hate relationship with North Korea? Dear Leader Kim Jung Un is continuing his nuclear weapons development and also selling a million rounds of tank ammunition to Putin for use in Ukraine war. How would Trump's approach differ from Biden's?

3)Are Hamas' Demands and Biden's Hopes Both Delusional?: This week talks are ongoing on releasing Israeli hostages from Hamas captivity. Israel just claimed Hamas' demands are still delusional, referring to how Prime Minister Netanyahu described them a few weeks ago. But US President Biden on Monday night claimed the likelihood of a temporary cease fire and start of hostage releases by next Monday. What is going on?

4)Is Israel Using Starvation as A Weapon of War in Gaza?: UN reports 500,000 Gaza civilians are now starving, and all 1.8 million are at high risk due to inadequate food supply. Israeli troops are even firing on food distribution sites. Is Israel's government using restrictions of food delivery as a weapon of war? If so, what are the implications?

1)Death of Russian Political Dissident Alexy Navalny: Mr. Navalny was a world famous anti-Putin Russian dissident, advocating for fair elections and a free Russia under a real Democracy. He was poisoned by Russian nerve agent 'novochok' a few years ago, successfully treated in Germany, and returned to Russia to keep his opposition mission going. Russian media reported on Friday that he died while inside a maximum security prison above the Arctic Circle. What do you think happened, and what should the US do?

2)Vladimir Putin Says He Wants Joe Biden to Win Presidential Election?: Putin just publicly stated that he would favor having Biden win the US election. He said Biden is from the 'old guard' and his actions will be more predictable.  Does he really mean it, or is he gas-lighting? Is this election interference?

3)Israel Prime Minister Netanyahu Rejects US Calls for a Two State Solution?: Netanyahu has openly rejected US Biden Administration calls for establishing a sovereign, independent State of Palestinian on the territory of Gaza and West Bank, and with it's capitol in East Jerusalem. Will that lead to growing friction between US and Israel?

4)Will Brazil Go to War To Defend It's Neighbor Guyana's Sovereignty?: South American country Guyana has a problem. On land andwiched between Venezuela and Brazil by in a treaty in 1899, it was given to the British and eventually became independent--- much of it remains thick jungle.  But rich oil fields have been discovered offshore. Suddenly Venezuela says two-thirds of Guyana should be declared independent or merged into Venezuela. Brazil rejects that demand. Is war likely?

1)Ukraine's President Appoints New Top Military Commander?: This past week, President Zelensky replaced his Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, General Val Zaluzhny. He said this was just a normal rotation after almost two years. But Ukraine's 2023 spring offensive bogged down into trench warfare, and disappointed many Western backers of Ukraine's fight against Russian invaders. Is Zelensky's change of military leadership really needed?

2)Beyond Ridiculous--- Who Won Pakistan's Election?: Elections were held last week in Pakistan, after months of delay. One of the candidates, former Prime Minister Imran Khan, had just been sentenced to 30 years prison two weeks prior to the election. His party logo was also banned from appearing on the ballot. But he is claiming now he won the election? Is that possible? If so, what are the consequences?

3)Is Biden's Relationship With Netanyahu Becoming Strained?: As Israel continues its 4th month of Gaza war, Biden has privately expressed more and more discomfort with Bibi's actions. Is a rift developing between Biden and Netanyahu?

1)The European Union commits Fifty Billion Euros for Ukraine: Last week, the EU promised a total of 50 billion euros to support Ukraine's fight against Russian invasion. They consider this as necessary to prevent Putin taking over that European nation, an event which would put Poland and Baltic States under immediate threat of Russian invasion. Is this a good investment?

2)US Response To Drone Attack On Tower 22 Military Base in Jordan: The Biden Administration responded to last week's terrorist drone attack in Jordan which killed three US service members. The Department of Defense ordered a large multi-point strike on Iraqi and Syrian 'Axis of Resistance' targets. They aimed to provide a 'Goldilocks-type' strike, just enough to deter the so called Iranian proxies from further action, but not leading to further escalation or a direct confrontation w/ Iran. Did it work?

3)Pakistan Holds Prime Minister Elections on February 8th: The Islamic Republic of Pakistan, a country of over 220 million people and a nuclear weapons armed state, is holding democratic elections this week. One of the contenders for PM office, Imran Khan, was just sentenced to 30 years in prison in three separate convictions in the last 15 days before the election. His rival, Nawaz Sharif, is returning from exile in Saudi Arabia where he had fled after conviction by courts in 2016. What is going on?

1)Israel Intelligence Claims UNRWA Staffers Helped Hamas in Oct 7th Attack?: Israel provided the UN with intelligence claiming UNRWA staff in Gaza were involved in helping Hamas in the Oct 7th terror attack. But the Israeli 'dossier', --- which suggests Hamas recruited or enlisted UNRWA staff, ----was released just one day after the UN's International Court of Justice (ICJ) reached verdict that Israel likely committed Genocidal Acts in Gaza. What do you think is going on here?

2)Three US Soldiers Killed in Jordan in A Drone Attack: This past weekend, three US soldiers were killed and 34 other US troops were wounded in a drone attack on a remote outpost called Tower 22. Described as a 'US logistics outpost' the outpost is in Rukban, Jordan, just a few kilometers from the Syrian border, and also near Iraq's border. A shadowy group called 'Axis of the Resistance' claimed responsibility for the attack. Who is this group, and what did they attack this US military outpost? How will the US respond?

3)Is the American "Christian Zionist Movement"Being Used By Israel?: It is estimated there are 5-10 million Christian Zionists in the USA. They see the return of Israel to the Holy Land as a signal for the End Times and the Second Coming of Christ. But is this subset of Christian faith being used by Israeli Zionists to promote pro-Israel support in US, and to further their claim all Palestine territory belongs exclusively to Israeli Jews?

1)Indian Prime Minister Modi Dedicates Massive New Hindu Temple: The new 'Ram Mandir' temple dedicated to Hindu god Ram was built over the ruins of a Muslim mosque built in 1528 under the Mogul Emperor Babur. That mosque, called  Babri Masjid (Babur's Mosque) was destroyed by Hindu religious extremists in 1992. What does this new Hindu temple say about Hindu-Muslim relations in India today?

2)Pakistan and Iran Fight in Baluchistan: The Iranians and Pakistanis have traded attacks on the long 800 mile border crossing through Baluchistan. What is the situation there, and could a wider war break out? If so, what would be the consequences in the region?

3)Israel Prime Minister Netanyahu Openly Rejects Two State Solution to Palestine Dispute: In direct defiance of US President Joe Biden, Israeli PM Netanyahu openly rejected calls for a two state solution to the ongoing Gaza War. Why is he taking this position, and what should the US do next?

1)UK Prime Minister Sunak Visits Ukraine: Last week, on Jan 12th, UK Prime Minister Sunak visited Kiev to meet President Zelensky. He included a grant of $2.5 billion to help Ukraine's military oppose Russia. He also signed a 10 year 'security cooperation agreement' with Ukraine, to last until Ukraine becomes a NATO member state. What does all this mean in the nearly two year long Russian war against Ukraine?

2)Taiwan Holds Presidential Elections: Mr. Lai Ching of the Democratic Progressive Party won election as next President of Taiwan. His party promotes quasi-independence from the PRC, known as Communist China. President Biden earlier said he would help defend Taiwan if attacked by Communist China. But he doesn't support Taiwan's independence. Has anything changed as result of this election?

3)Biden's New White House Advisor on Israel-Gaza War?: Recently Biden appointed Mr. Amos Hochstein as Presidential Coordinator for Global Infrastructure and Energy Security. He is also helping Secretary of State Blinken limit the expansion of the Gaza conflict. What makes his appointment unusual?

4)100 Days of War in Gaza Sees Israel Accused of Genocide in High Court: This weekend saw the 100th day of Israel's war against Hamas in Gaza. The International Court of Justice heard a case filed by South Africa accusing Israel of committing Genocide. South Africa is asking the court to order an 'immediate ceasefire' to stop the alleged genocide.  Will the court make such an order, and if so, will Israel comply?

1)Secretary of State Blinken's Fourth Trip to Middle East since Oct 7th: Blinken is making a Middle East trip this week, including  Turkey, Egypt, UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Israel. This is at a time when fears of regional escalation are rising. Netanyahu's government just used a drone to assassinate a top Hamas leader in Beirut, Lebanon. That country's military leader has promised a response to this violation of Lebanese sovereignty. Meanwhile Israel's heavy bombardment of Gaza continues. What can Blinken accomplish on this trip?

2)The Day After in Gaza?: The Defense Minister of Israel Gallant has announced a draft plan that would include Israel military continued presence in Gaza after the war, but would 'allow' the US and other international groups to help rebuild the smashed territory. Running the new Gaza Strip government would be some undefined 'Palestine group' but not including Hamas, and likely not Palestine Authority. Would his plan work?

3)Who Is Biden's New White House Advisor on Israel-Gaza War?: Recently Biden appointed Amos Hochstein as Presidential Coordinator for Global Infrastructure and Energy Security. He is also Special Presidential Envoy helping Secretary of State Blinken to limit the expansion of the Gaza war into Lebanon. What makes his appointment remarkable?

1)Is Israel's Self Defense Force 'Trigger Happy"?: In the past week, IDF forces shot and killed three Israeli hostages trying to surrender to Israel while carrying a white flag; and shot and killed a Christian woman and her mother sheltering in the only Roman Catholic Church in Gaza when they went outside to go to the bathroom. Is this a reflection of IDF troops shooting first, and asking questions later? What is going on?

2)Israel Military Attack On Kamal Adwan Hospital in Gaza City: This past week, Israel's Army launched numerous attacks near and on the Kamal Adwan Hospital. They claim it is being used as a Hamas base of operation. Only five Palestinian doctors remain in the hospital, caring for hundreds of patients. There are about 70 hospital support staff. Israel just announced it captured 70 Hamas fighters and their weapons in the hospital. Does this prove Hamas is using hospitals as operational bases, and that Israel is justified in attacking hospitals?

3)Did Palestinians Refuse Offer to Equally Divide The Palestinian Mandate Area With Jews Back in the 1930s?: Some say the Palestinians were offered 50% of Palestine territory as 'their state' back in the 1930s, but they refused. Is that claim true or false? If so, why did they reject the offer?

4)Is China Using INTERPOL As Way To Hunt Down Dissidents?: Interpol is an international police cooperation agency, used to hunt criminals and terrorists. It uses a Red Notice system to ask member countries to identify, hold and turn over 'targets' upon request from other members. But China is a state dictatorship. It seems to be using INTERPOL as part of a repressive system of hunting down political dissidents. Is this allowed?
