The David Hunter Perspective - 2023-12-13

Read on for today's agenda below prepared by David (thank you very much). - Retired US Diplomat to 5 different nations  David Hunter shares his knowledge, passion, interest, and experience.

1)Israel's Ethnic Cleansing of Gaza Strip?: In the past two months, Israel has bombed and invaded North Gaza and told Palestinians to flee south to Khan Yunis City. Now, Israel is bombing Khan Yunis and telling Palestinians to go  even further south to Rafah. Some say Netanyahus' plan is to push Palestinians out of Gaza into the Egyptian Sinai desert and claim the area for Israel. Would that be ethnic cleansing? What do you think?

2)US Continues Supplying Weapons to Israel?: Israel engages in 'war crimes' -- starving Palestinian civilians of food, water and medicine, and dropping bombs on civilian schools, and hospitals, Meanwhile, Secretary of State Blinken said he is concerned about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, but vetoed a UN-supported humanitarian cease-fire last week, and approved supplying US-made ammunition for Israel's tanks, and US-made bombs for fighter jets flying over Gaza. What is going on?

3)Russian Dissident Alexy Navalney Missing From Prison?: Mr. Navalney, who was principle opposition candidate against President Putin, was arrested for 'corruption' and sent to prison in 2021. He was recently convicted of additional charges and had his prison sentence extended by 19 years. Now his Moscow supporters say he is no longer reachable in Russian prison. What is happening?

1)How Many Jews Live in Israel?: Demographics are important in understanding the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict, and Jewish influence around the world. Just how many Jews ---and Palestinians--- live in the old Greater Palestine area between the River Jordan and the Mediterranean Sea?

2)The Jewish Festival of Hanukkah Starts on December 7th--What is It About?: Called a victory of lightness over darkness, exactly what is Hanukkah?

3)Could Gaza Become a Rich Arab Emirate like the UAE?: Offshore from tiny Gaza has been discovered a massive natural gas filed, called 'Gaza Marine". It is estimated to have one trillion cubic feet of natural gas. If developed, it could make every resident of Gaza very rich---like the oil sheikhs of the Gulf States and their citizen. So why isn't it being done?

4)Should US Continue to Fund Military Assistance to Ukraine?: There is a vote coming up in the US Senate to approve billions of new military aid to Ukraine. The Republicans are saying such aid should be linked to funding more for US border security measures. What do you think?

1)Does the Hamas Charter Declare Genocide on The Jews?: The White House spokesman, Adm. John Kirby, recently claimed that Hamas' own internal doctrine, called it's Charter, advocates genocide of Jews and the destruction of Israel. Is this true?

2)Could Gaza Become A Rich Arab Emirate like UAE?: Recently a huge natural gas field has been discovered directly off the coast of Gaza. It is in shallow waters so would be easy to set up gas drilling. Who owns this resource? Could Palestine as an independent state become another wealthy Emirate? Could Gaza declare independence from Palestine?

3)Are Israeli-Turkey Relations Getting Worse?: On November 16th, Turkey's President Erdogan announced Israel is a "Terrorist State' for it's widespread bombing  of innocent civilians in Gaza. Israel promptly recalled its Ambassador to Turkey for 'consultations'. Turkey is a NATO member, Israel is not. What is going on?

4)Blinken Back in Israel While First US Government Aid for Gaza Arrives in Egypt: US Secretary of State Tony Blinken is making another trip to Israel this week, as the first of three US military planeloads of humanitarian aid arrives in Egypt for delivery to Gaza. If Israel re-starts it's war against Hamas, will this US aid be prevented from entry?

1)How Much Longer Will Two US Carrier Strike Groups Remain in Mediterranean to Defend Israel?: The US has 11 active Aircraft Carriers in service worldwide. Two of these, and their strike group companions, are deployed in the Mediterranean and Persian Gulf, allegedly to deter Israel's regional foes from attacking while Israel is busy fighting Hamas. How long will they stay in the Middle East?

2)Iran Announces New Hypersonic Missile: This last week, the Ayatollah of Iran attended the unveiling of a new Mach 15 speed hypersonic missile, named the Fattah 2. "Victory Giver". Such a missile could strike a US or other ship in such brief time that air defenses would be ineffective. Given the timing with two US Aircraft carriers in the Middle East, is this a signal to the US about war with Iran?

3)UN Office of High Commissioner of Human Rights Issues Report on Israel's Actions in Gaza: On November 16th, the UN Office on Human Rights 'Group of Experts' issued a scathing report on Israel's humanitarian law violations in Gaza, claiming Israel's conduct is approaching intentional acts of Genocide or Ethnic Cleansing. Are the UN human rights experts biased or 'anti-Semitic' by making this claim?

1)The Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation Held Joint Summit in Saudi Arabia to Discuss Gaza: Last week the Arab League and OIC held a joint summit of 57 country leaders in Saudi Arabia, chaired by Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman of Saudi Arabia. They focused on the ongoing war in Gaza. What was decided?

2)Israel's Ambassador to the UN, Gilad Ergan: Gilad Erdan is Israel's Ambassador to the United Nations. But he seems to smear the UN in which he is serving, saying it is 'anti-Israel' and 'anti-Semitic'. Is that a good idea for a diplomat?

3)Arab States Sending Emergency Relief to Gaza: Last week the question was asked why the large and rich Arab states nearby Gaza didn't provide sanctuary and aid the Palestinians. After the Arab summit last weekend, many Arab states are doing just that---providing humanitarian aid to battered Gaza. What is happening?

4)UK Prime Minister Sunak Appoints Former Prime Minister David Cameron as New Foreign Secretary: Mr. Sunak fired his Home Secretary, Ms. Suella Braverman,--- over her claims the UK Police were pro-Palestine, ---and moved his black Foreign Secretary Mr. James Cleverly into that empty Home Secretary job. He then appointed former PM David Cameron to be new Foreign Secretary, even though Cameron doesn't hold any elected office. Why this cabinet shuffle?

1)Secretary of State Blinken Travels to the Middle East: For almost five days this last week, Secretary of State Blinken traveled again to Middle East countries, including Israel, Palestine, Jordan, Iraq and Turkey. At each of these stops, his focus was the Israel-Gaza War. What did he accomplish in his trip?

2)Does the US Have Any Obligation to Defend Israel? We all assume Israel has the right to 'self defense' when attacked. And that might include from threats from Hezbulah in Lebanon. But if this 'second front' opens in Israel's current war, should the US join in this fight with jets flying off its aircraft carriers? After all, Hamas and Hezbulah haven't attacked US troops or ships. We don't have a collective security agreement with Israel. So what would be the basis for direct US involvement?

3Chinese Premier Li Keqiang Dies of Heart Attack?: Li Keqiang who ruled as Chinese Premier (the #2 position in China) from 2013-2023, stepped down in March 2023. Li Keqiang was seen as progressive, supporting Chinese market expansion. But he quietly opposed Pres. Xi's consolidation of state power and focus on empowering the state run industry sector. Some Chinese say he was assassinated by President Xi? What do you think?

1)Why Is Biden Administration Counseling Israel Not To Launch Ground Invasion?: According to report of Washington Post this weekend, Biden and his team, while still backing Israel's right to defend itself against Hamas, think a ground invasion would not be a good idea. They suggest instead a 'limited tactical strike' on Hamas forces using Special Ops teams. Is that a better alternative?

2)Is Israel's Disproportionate Use of Military Force a Violation of International Laws of War?: The Israeli military has a military doctrine named Dahiya which claims massive retaliation for any limited attack is a legitimate way to defend and deter future attacks. If one Palestinian strikes an Israeli solider, the Palestinian family's home will be bulldozed down, making all the family members homeless. Collective punishment as deterrent. Is this justified as defense against Hamas or Hezbollah?

3)Will US Go to War Against Iran?: The Israel crisis has the potential to 'boil over' into a wider regional war, including Hezbollah and Iran. Already US is bombing Syrian bases of pro-Iran fighters who have fired missiles on US troops in the region. The US has 36,000 troops already stationed in the Middle East, including Djibouti, Kuwait, Bahrain, Iraq, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and UAE. What would happen if we have a direct conflict with Iran?

4)Do Israeli Arabs Make Up Just 20% of Israel's Population?: The two million Israeli-Arabs --sometimes called "1948-Palestinians",---- who now live in 'non-occupied' areas of Israel, comprise just 20% of Israels total nine million official 'citizens'. The other seven million are Jewish. These population statistics are used by Israel to claim Israel is predominantly Jewish. But they do not include five million 'occupied West Bank' Palestinians or two million Gaza 'de-occupied Palestinians'. Should these also be considered part of Israel's population for Israeli census purposes?
