    River Corner Church

River Corner Church is a growing church community of everyday people who gather to worship God, follow Jesus, and journey through life together.

Our small church community is uniquely caring, simple, laid-back, and intergenerational. As a church, we want to be a welcoming, safe, and healing community for those who are seeking, hurting, or need a place to belong. Our practices are both contemplative (reflective) and charismatic (Spirit-driven), creating an atmosphere that is both conversational and informative. The times we share are intentional and intimate, and a mix between modern and traditional. We want to be a place in which love and honor are lived out, where humility is central, and where hospitality is woven into the threads of our community. There is room at the table.

Our Advent Conspiracy series is inviting you to be part of a different story this Christmas, one that celebrates our King and brings hope to the watching world.

The Advent Conspiracy series was founded on the radical idea that we can celebrate Christmas humbly, beautifully, and generously. Advent is the story of a wondrous moment when God entered our world to make things right. It is the greatest story ever told and it changes everything—including the way we celebrate Christmas.

This third week of our Advent Conspiracy series, Jeff McLain challenges us to give more of our presence as we look at the story of Joseph and how he models for us obedience, surrender, and interruptibility.

    • WORSHIP FULLY Christmas begins and ends with Jesus.
    • SPEND LESS Free up your resources to support things that truly matter.
    • GIVE MORE Give more intentionally and relationally.

On Sunday, November 20,  Pastor Jeff looked at Romans 12:9-13, and how we can leave a legacy of love and honor in the places that we live, work, and play.

As we look at the instructions from Paul to the churches living in the shadow of Rome, we find that Paul calls and challenges all followers of Jesus to be devoted to love and honor in such a way that we truly practice seeing, hearing, understanding, valuing and loving those in our spheres of influence.

In Romans 12:9-13, Paul truly gives us the way to live a legacy of love and legacy.

The Ways and Whys of Jesus (John 15:9-17)

The Ways and Whys of Jesus (John 15:9-17)

In John 15:9-17, Jesus explains his ways and the whys of what he does, but also the ways and why of which he expects us to live by as followers of Jesus. That way and why of life expresses itself through surrendering and sacrificial love.

This morning was a unique morning for us at River Corner Church.  As a church, we focused on celebrating friends, our first responders, in our neighborhood and region who are doing well at serving our neighbors and neighborhood. This was an opportunity for us to not to celebrate our first responders, but also share that we see them, hear them, understand them, pray for them and that we are a resource here for them.

Our message was focused on John 15:9-17, looking at a passage in which Jesus unpacks the ways and whys of being a follower of Jesus. This is something that those like our first responders may understand a little more than some others of us. I hope this morning we all take away something that helps us find new impetus for transformation in the ways of what we do and in the why we do what we do.

Kingship, Rule & Authority: Parables of the Hidden Treasure and Pearl (Matthew 13:44-46)

Kingship, Rule & Authority: Parables of the Hidden Treasure and Pearl (Matthew 13:44-46)

On October 9, Pastor Jeff McLain continued our series, "Kingship, Rule & Authority," by looking at the Parables of the Hidden Treasure and Pearl in Matthew 13:44-46. In these parables, we find Jesus illustrates the purpose of his ministry, and also that Jesus illustrates the reckless abandonment to all else, which is how we enter and collaborate with the Kingdom of God.

This Sunday morning series, September 11 to November 13,  will be a study through the parables, on the Kingdom of God. The Kingdom of God was the gospel message that was both at the center of Jesus' mission and ministry, and it was also the center of the mission and message he gave us.

The Kingdom of God is the invasive, subversive, way that God’s presence, priorities, and power converge on and in our world. It is an invasion and God is looking for co-conspirators to bring about his insurrection of this world's ideas through conversion of people and paradigms. As co-conspirators, we collaborate on bringing about or seeing to God’s presence, priorities, and power as they manifest through our commitment to compassion, signs and wonders, ethics and justice.

In Gospel of the Kingdom, Theologian George Eldon Ladd wrote, "The Kingdom of God is His kingship, His rule, His authority. When this is once realized, we can go through the New Testament and find passage after passage where this meaning is evident, where the Kingdom is not a realm or a people but God’s reign. Jesus said that we must “receive the kingdom of God” as little children (Mark 10:15). What is received? The Church? Heaven? What is received is God’s rule. In order to enter the future realm of the Kingdom, one must submit himself in perfect trust to God’s rule here and now. We must also “seek first his kingdom and his righteousness” (Matt. 6: 33). What is the object of our quest? The Church? Heaven? No; we are to seek God’s righteousness—His sway, His rule, His reign in our lives.”

The Meal Jesus Transforms Us With (1 Corinthians 11:17-34)

The Meal Jesus Transforms Us With (1 Corinthians 11:17-34)

On August 28, we practiced the Lord's Table, as Jeff McLain discussed the Lord's Table, and the way that this meal that Jesus gave us, also transforms us as individuals and as a church.

By looking at the practice of the Lord's Table throughout the scriptures, we find that at the Lord's table we remind ourselves we belong, we remember what has been promised, we rediscover what we believe, and we realign our minds to remember whose and what I am. However, it is also as the Lord's Table, that we remember that we have been rescued to be rescuers, that we have been shown mercy, to show mercy, and that we have been shown forgiveness so that we can show forgiveness to others. Through the Lord's Table, we remember that we have been set free from our sin and brokenness, so that we can be freed up to liberate others.

A Posture For the Desert Moments (Numbers 13)

A Posture For the Desert Moments (Numbers 13)

On August 14, Jeff McLain looked at the story in Numbers 13 as we found that perhaps the desert moment is not a place of pain and problem, but a time in which God's presence and promise is closer than we realize. However, perhaps the promised land and opportunities only come when we posture ourselves correctly while we are in the desert. In Numbers 13, we see what it means to posture ourselves correctly in our desert moments as individuals and as a church community.

Growing Our Patience in Suffering (James 5:7-9)

Growing Our Patience in Suffering (James 5:7-9)

On August 7, Jeff McLain explored James 5:7-9 and how we might grow our capacity for patience in the moments that we suffer through a pressure, pain, or problem in our life that feels unresolved.

Patience doesn't come easy for many of us. It wasn't any different for the early church as they wrestled to remain faithful in some fearful and challenging times. James, the brother of Jesus, writes an encouragement to these early followers of Jesus who were dispersed and suffering throughout the region. He writes them an encouragement that calls them to be patient, to establish themselves in the middle of their suffering, and to train themselves to experience the transformative nature of God's mercy and compassion.

Final Instructions: Gracious Conversations (Colossians 4:6)

Final Instructions: Gracious Conversations (Colossians 4:6)

On July 31, Jeff McLain brought our series, Final Instructions, to a close by looking at Colossians 4:6, as we explored Pauls' encouragement and challenge to the the church to have gracious conversations. Throughout this series, Final Instructions, each week, we have explored Paul’s final instructions to the church in Colossae, looking at Paul's instructions on how to bring the church into a maturity of faith.

In a season of cultural earthquakes, Paul encourages the Colossian church towards maturity in Christ by learning to pray for the message and the messengers of the Kingdom. In the same way, Paul’s writing encourages us to pray that the rule and reign of God to break-in to the realities of our world. We are encouraged to pray that the obstacles of the messengers do not become a hinderance to the testimony of who Jesus is and what knowing Jesus brings. We must be a church that is dedicated to praying for the mission and messengers of God.

It is in Colossians 4:3-4, that Paul writes; "And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains. Pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should.”
