Is Something Missing from Your Gap Analysis?

Is Something Missing from Your Gap Analysis?

A great way  for an organization to answer to the question "how are we doing?" is to conduct a Gap Analysis.  To help you compare "what you're doing" to "what you should be doing," Safety Chats host  Jason Starke guides you through do-able five steps.

In terms of safety, comparing actual performance against expected performance can make a difference in day to day operations.  Flight departments often see improvements in safety performance with the completion of a regular Gap Analysis.  Make sure you're not leaving anything out of your next Gap Analysis.

BOLO - Awareness as a Mitigation

BOLO - Awareness as a Mitigation

"Be On The Lookout" is a way to add "awareness" as an element to control risk. Although awareness is lower on a hierarchy of risk controls, it is an effective tool that can be used individually, with your team, or your crew.  Pre-flight or pre-shift briefings can set-up the workgroup to be on the lookout for a particular risk or situation.

The Value of Effective Data Categorization

The Value of Effective Data Categorization

Incidents, accidents, events, near misses, hazards - all these represent the stream of incoming data you are managing. The problem is the value of that data is only as good as the system you have to retrieve and sort it. This is where our topic for today comes in - finding an effective categorization scheme. When our categories are applicable it helps us find our data- easier, faster and help us link things in our data. Turns out that this categorization is called taxonomy and in this weeks episode we will discuss how to choose a system of categorization you can use to effectively manage all that data.

Get 'Er Done! Speeding Up & Reaching Goals

Get 'Er Done! Speeding Up & Reaching Goals

Here's a familiar scenario -  Your team starts off a project with a lot of energy.  But lately, activity has waned.

Maybe the team (or you) need a nudge (or reset) to get back in action. Listen how the “goal gradient effect” may be utilized to get the team moving again.

Whether you are working toward setting or reaching your safety goals, the end may be closer than you realize. The Goal Gradient Effect states that as people get closer to a reward, they speed up their behavior to get to their goal faster. In other words, people are motivated by how much is left to reach their target, not how far they've come. The idea was named by behaviorist Clark Hull in 1932.

    Fuel Tankering: Yes or No?

    Fuel Tankering: Yes or No?

With the airline industry reporting 17-25% of total operating costs are related to fuel and the jump we've seen in the cost of fuel over the past months, fuel tankering has become a consideration. This week we look at not just the financial impacts of the practice, but the environmental impacts as well.  Tankering does affect the organization's bottom line, but it has implications on the environment, the aircraft airframe, performance of the aircraft and safety as well.

Keeping Oversight over the Services You Outsource

Keeping Oversight over the Services You Outsource

When we outsource part of our flight department's services, rather that be maintenance, FBO, catering, etc,  we inevitably lose oversight of the task. Today we look at what we can be doing to ensure we are not letting risk come into our operations through these providers. Where do you outsource and what kind of oversight do you have? Do you evaluate them to ensure they are following standards? Do you have safeguards in place?

Organizational Pathogens: Could Something Unseen Be Eating at Your Organization?

How will you deal with someone who willing violates an SOP? If we hold the organization accountable for the systems they design it must also hold true that employees should be held accountable for the choices they make. This week we discuss the idea of  what makes a just culture within an organization, a culture where every employee feels they are treated justly.  Does your organization need a formal process to determine if the accountability lies with a person or the organization?
