Welcome to the Sounds Like a Search and Rescue Podcast! Also known as SLASR. Join an experienced search and rescue volunteer and his friend as they discuss all things related to hiking and search and rescue in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.  This week we are joined by our friend Ethan Banks. Ethan is a prolific trail runner and hiker in the Whites. He recently met up with Stomp and hit it off so we thought it made sense to have him sit in on an episode. Ethan is a route creator, runner, hiker, podcaster and all around interesting guy so he is going to share some of his experience with us and we are going to learn about the Squamathon and some of his other crazy pursuits in the Whites. In addition to Ethan we will give our predictions for winter snowfall totals, Stomp has discovered he cannot sleep well while backpacking so we are going to conduct a therapy session, Grizzly bear attack in canada, mail truck burns in NH - Mrs. Stomp is ok, The Abby Hernandez abduction in North Conway, Haunted Happening and things to do and recent search and rescues on Tuckerman and Monadnock.

Stomp is going to give everyone a refresh on his fall foliage tips for October as we enter what better be a spectacular leaf peeping season given how much rain we’ve received. We’ll have the trails, the drives and the secret spots to check out to avoid the crowds and find the views. All this plus a Xylo the cat update, a History segment, a mystery segment and a hiking drama segment - For history we learn about Benjamin Ball of Ball Crag fame on Mount Washington, for mystery we learn about the strange disappearance of Kevin Race on Mount Washington and for hiking drama we discuss the 32 Feet Up family who are currently hiking the AT. But wait there's more - Taylor Swift breaks the NFL, The Bachelor is letting elderly people compete, and recent search and rescue news.

Like our own beloved NH, hikers in the Adirondacks pursue their own version of a 4000 footer list, in season 1 of James’s podcast he unwinds the story of his completion of the ADK 4000 footers and has since gone on to cover seasons focused on winter hiking, backpacking and some of the lower peaks in the ADK. James is a NY licensed guide for hiking and camping and also works in the film and television industry. We are excited to learn more about the ADK’s and about his podcast. Stories From the Starting Line: 'There are people who run occasionally or run as part of another sport, and there are people who need to run for their mental wellbeing. Tom Raffio and Ellen Raffio address the latter group in Stories from the Starting Line. The couple, who met running, runs more than 100 races a year in New Hampshire and Northern New England and uses this depth of experience to write about the diverse runners they meet at races.

The runners who share their stories are parents running pushing jogging strollers, men and women still running strong in their seventies, women who had to fight for their right to run, professional runners chasing wins and many more just looking for an adventure on their feet. Tom and Ellen talk with runners including 1984 Olympic Marathon Winner Joan Benoit Samuelson; Jacqueline Gareau, the real winner of the controversial 1980 Boston Marathon; and elite mountain runner Joseph Gray along with dozens of others.

The bookincludes runners of all ages and abilities who run all kinds of distances and terrain from 5Ks on the road to marathons, ultramarathons and triathlons. It highlights the nationally recognized Delta Dental Mount Washington Road Race, a 7.6 mile race up the auto road to the Mount Washington Summit in Northern New Hampshire, along with the numerous local road races that both raise money for charity and bring area runners together to do what they love. This includes the story of Millennium Running, a New Hampshire running events company that reimagined road racing so that when COVID-19 hit, the races could go on, which was not the case in most of the country. All these stories, and more, are part of Stories from the Starting Line.'

Ken was last with us for Episode 36, back in November of 2021 along with our friend Ian, talking about his first book “They Said It Would Be Fun: A Hilarious Journey Learning to Hike the NH 48,” published on Nov 29th. His second book, “They Said They Wanted More: A Hilarious Journey Hiking the NH 52 With a View,” was published a year later. The Observatory is a private, nonprofit, member-supported institution with a mission to advance understanding of the natural systems that create Earth’s weather and climate. It serves this mission by maintaining a weather station on the summit of Mount Washington, performing weather and climate research, conducting innovative science education programs, and interpreting the heritage of the Mount Washington region. Charlie will give us some background about the Observatory’s annual Seek the Peak fundraiser, the operations behind the observatory, details about the upcoming summit opening and more! In addition to Charlie sitting in, Stomp has pulled even more info about places and features in and around Waterville Valley that you don’t know about but will not have to check out.  All this plus, hikes updates from Black mountain and Timber Camp, and recent search and rescue news including rescues in and around Mount Moosilauke and Mount Passaconaway
