Kids are frequently a topic for newly married couples, and there’s always a split on what the answer will be. I got to sit down and chat with my friend Kait Nolan about her and her husband’s choice NOT to have children. She speaks to some of the struggles of infertility and how sometimes choosing not to have kids often leads to blessings later in life.

“(Parent)’s going through something right now…..” is not something that we, as parents, ever want to have to say to our kids.  We never want our mental health to affect our kids in any way, shape or form.  However…it’s something that we really need to talk about with our kids.  

Mental health has become more of a priority in the past few years, especially in the workplace, but one place that often gets overlooked is the home for parents that have to deal with it.  We, as parents or guardians, need to have those convos with the children.  We can’t hide these things from them and have them think that we don’t struggle and later on find out things that happened in their childhood was because of OUR poor mental health!!

"Woooo WHOOOO!!! THE KIDS ARE GONE!! Oh…the kids are gone, what are we gonna do?”

Well, the kid(s) have finally moved out of the house, now what?  What are you gonna spend your time doing?  Where are you going to go without having to think about what they want to do?  Who’s gonna complain about dad’s bad jokes?  (For those stay-at-home parents)  Who are you gonna wake up for school so they’re not late? 

In this episode, I’m talking with my amazing mother-in-law, Monica, and we talk about what it’s like to be an empty nester.  She’s the mother of nine kids (and yes, from the same husband) and they’ve all moved out, most are married or are about to be, and most have at least one kid.  She talks about the trials and achievements of being a mom of nine kids and then being an empty nester after almost forty years.  (Yeah, that’s a long time!! But with nine kids, the last being twin boys, and all of them leaving at eighteen that’s a lot of time!)

This episode talks about safety and etiquette, for a few things, that I’ve noticed in the past eight years of being a carpool parent.  Believe it or not, that carpool line is a great teacher in and of itself!

Wow!! I’ve been making podcasts for a month now and I’ve learned so much!! In that month a lot has happened and I’ve also come to a lot of conclusions: THIS STUFF TAKES SO MUCH TIME AND ENERGY,  I still have a lot of stuff to learn, I need to change a few things, and I need to ask for more help.  There are some pretty big announcements in this episode and I hope that everyone listening will help me become a better podcaster!

Kids are always an upcoming topic for newly married couples.  Are they going to have any and if so how many?  If not, why?  I got to sit down with my eldest sister-in-law, Whitney, and talk about what it’s like having five kids as opposed to my one kid.  She entreats us with her wisdom and we talked about other things to help new mamas or mamas looking to have more than one and what that sort of entails.

There are so many “Big Talks” that we need to have with our kids.  Periods are really one of the first ones since it happens to every girl (or at least it should) and it needs to be talked about with both our sons and daughters. It’s uncomfortable and can be embarrassing…but everyone learns about it one way or another and it’s best to learn about it from us as parents or guardians than from strangers on the internet.

There are so many stories out there about awful MILs and I think there is a stigma on future MILs.  I, personally, don’t want to be one of those stories! I wanna share what I think would make a good mother-in-law and other things that our kids can learn!

Chores are an important part of life. We learn them at a young age so that we know what to do when we move out of our parent’s home to become independent adults.  But, what chores are appropriate for what age?  What should we parents be responsible for if the kid(s) are doing a lot of the housework? Let’s talk about it!

Let me introduce myself!!  This episode is just a little get to know me and who I am as a person.  So sit back, do whatever needs to be done and take a listen as I do the thing of talking awkwardly about myself….Look out for those rabbit trails though!!
