New Wineskins: Baptism - Yiqian Chua - 23rd April 2023

New Wineskins: Baptism - Yiqian Chua - 23rd April 2023

Last Sunday, Yiqian guided us on an exploration of the Scriptural narrative of God's partnership with humanity to bring them out of a cycle of chaos/sin/brokenness. In the waters of baptism and the hovering of the Spirit of God, we participate in both a personal and communal story of dying to death and embracing restored goodness. Jesus' baptism, life, death and resurrection became living, embodied proof (fulfilment) of the true relational story of God and Creation (righteousness) that we are all meant to participate in. And this story leads us towards a victorious, present-and-future, new life.

Whether or not you've been baptised, whatever your experience of baptism, this story is for you. God's Spirit has, is, and will always be hovering over your life, seeking your co-participation. Don't miss, minimalise, or misunderstand God's invitation to a baptised reality of life. Immerse yourself and your world in it. (pun-intended)

If you’re feeling that baptism might be your next step let’s get the conversation started! Reach out to any of the team on a Sunday, or get in touch via email (cory@steeplechurch.com.au) and a member of the Steeple team will get in touch to chat.

New Wineskins: Jarrod McKenna - 16th April 2023

New Wineskins: Jarrod McKenna - 16th April 2023

Is it possible that we could forget to welcome God’s Future?

Could it be that sacraments are a “door to the sacred,” but we started to act like we were going through the door to go elsewhere instead of opening the door to welcome Heaven here?

Jesus invited us into becoming “enacted parables” or “participatory prophecies” that welcome God healing justice, peace and joy that we might be a sign of the world transformed.

Join us as we explore how we can become expanding vessels of God’s fermenting power, and how we can become “New Wineskins”.

Palm Sunday: Do you get it? - Jarrod McKenna - 2nd April 2023

Palm Sunday: Do you get it? - Jarrod McKenna - 2nd April 2023

Do You Get It? (Or Which Procession You In?)

    Jokes need context.

We don’t often get invited to think of our Lord as a larrikin fulfilling prophecy by being cheeky. But what if the historical context helps us see how funny Jesus is?

What if Jesus wants us in on the “joke” that God’s kingdom comes through love?

What changes when we realise that every year at Passover from the other side of the city Jerusalem there is another procession:

A procession of the Roman Empire representing their “Son of God”, “Saviour” and “Lord”, that is Caesar.

This procession from the East has war horses and declares the violent domination of Rome.

But on this Passover, here comes Jesus from the east.

Not on a warhorse but a donkey.

Not proclaiming the violent domination of Rome but the nonviolent coming of God’s kingdom of liberation.

Great comedians don’t “punch-down” on the vulnerable but expose the truth of the situation with heart and hilarity. This Palm Sunday, join us as we explore  with Jarrod McKenna that “Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God” and “God’s foolishness” is actually hilarious. (1 Corinthians 1:23-25)

Tune In. Not Out - Mel Winterbine - 19th March 2023

Tune In. Not Out - Mel Winterbine - 19th March 2023

There’s no getting around it, life will send you shake ups! What you do with what happens in you is what matters most. Sitting with Jesus to tune into your internal world can reveal your unique design and values. Tapping into this means you can discover how to spend your life - compelled with purpose, love and action, to become the solution to what you see. If you feel a nudge to begin serving as the church and alongside others, reach out via socials or the Steeple website to have a chat or check out these questions to help you find your next safe step:

TUNE IN: Recalling something that has frustrated or moved you recently; why does this matter so much to you? Where, when and how are your feelings, thoughts and perspectives currently being expressed?

BE COMPELLED: Have I brought my responses to God, what outcome am I praying for? How could I be a participant in a solution that works towards the highest good of all involved?

BECOME READY: When was the last time your comfort zone was stretched and what got you through it? Where are you being called to water what matters and what small step can you take to do this? What do you need in place to feel safe to take the next step?

    RESTORE - Ash Rosevear & Cory Mitchell - 12th March 2023

    RESTORE - Ash Rosevear & Cory Mitchell - 12th March 2023

Yesterday we jumped into the second week of our Future Series by catching up with our new Community & Justice Catalyst - Ash Rosevear - who shared so honestly about some of his past church related trauma and how he has experienced the restorative power of a safe and inclusive God (and community) by holding deeply to the hope of Jesus as the Good Shepherd (John 10:10,11) who loves all, serves all and pursues all irregardless of where they might be at in life!
    .
That sounds like good news; thanks for sharing yourself and some of your story so generously with us Ash.
    .
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”

Struggle with the Tension? - Naomi Keane - 26th February 2023

Struggle with the Tension? - Naomi Keane - 26th February 2023

Do you struggle with the tension between the "good" things you want to do and the "bad" things you don't want to do but find yourself doing anyway?

God's gift of grace through Jesus means that we don't have to try and do "good" things. Instead, the Holy Spirit has been graciously given to us to work with us and in us so that we don't have to try and be "good" to do "good" things.

Rather as we seek daily to live with and in the Spirit. The Spirit transforms us into the fullness of who God created us to be. The Spirit makes us more like Jesus. The Spirit makes us "good".

"So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me. What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law, but in my sinful nature a slave to the law of sin."
    Romans 7:21‭-‬25 NIV

Play the Long Game - Cory Mitchell - 19th February 2023

Play the Long Game - Cory Mitchell - 19th February 2023

“Play the Long Game” by remembering that:
    1. Our Flavour – requires time to mature and develop…

“Don’t rush the process; Good things take time, great things take a little longer”

Savour and enjoy what God is doing in us, now, and do not be in a rush to move onto the next thing prematurely…

    2. Our Future – is a generational pursuit…

“Be a good ancestor: Plant trees you’ll never see.”

We must savour the moment we’re in while thinking, planning and planting generationally.

Our invitation is to think about the world we are making for our children and our childrens’ children.

    3. Our Fumes – are never wasted…

What is lost, or more accurately, what moves from a church plays a significant role in refining and defining what remains in the life of a church.

Not every person, program or partner that started with us, will stay with us; but every stage and every story that has been with us contributes to our flavour and to our future.

Choosing the Unforced Rhythms of Grace - Mel Winterbine - 29th January 2023

Choosing the Unforced Rhythms of Grace - Mel Winterbine - 29th January 2023

Jesus offers each of us the unforced rhythms of grace which we can connect with to do life with Pace, Peace and Purpose. So why is finding peaceful rythms so difficult? How we view success, will determine how we experience it - harried and hurried, or freely and lightly.

When you have awareness of what is motivating your lens of success, you can begin to choosing to sidestep the striving and stress and connect with the internal compass of spirit, design and grace.

We don't have to look too far to see where these life giving rhythms are found, and what they look like...In Jesus we find the sustainable rhythms of life, spiritually, relationally and emotionally.

Choosing the Unforced Rhythms of Grace, means keeping in step with the pace, peace and purpose that Jesus offers us.

Making Headway Painfully - Cory Mitchell - 5th February 2023

Making Headway Painfully - Cory Mitchell - 5th February 2023

A guaranteed part of the Christian life – life in communion with Jesus and Jesus’ people – if we are living in pursuit of the one who calls us all to the other side is that you and I will experience pain and suffering in various forms and at various times and through various seasons.
    .
Sometimes we must paddle – we must continue to make headway painfully, with the wind against us – knowing that even if Jesus doesn’t get in the boat He is still present with us in the storm!
    .
    [Mark 6: 45-52 ESV]
    .
“Immediately he made his disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd. 46 And after he had taken leave of them, he went up on the mountain to pray.
    .
47 And when evening came, the boat was out on the sea, and he was alone on the land.48 And he saw that they were making headway painfully, for the wind was against them.
    .
And about the fourth watch of the night[g] he came to them, walking on the sea. He meant to pass by them, 49 but when they saw him walking on the sea they thought it was a ghost, and cried out, 50 for they all saw him and were terrified.
    .
But immediately he spoke to them and said, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.” 51 And he got into the boat with them, and the wind ceased.”

    Aboriginal Sunday - Common Grace - 22nd January 2023

    Aboriginal Sunday - Common Grace - 22nd January 2023

"We lament that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have been seeking to be heard since 1788. Australia has consistently failed to listen. We know too that Australia has not yet wrestled with the truth of our shared history, and has failed to establish treaties with its First Peoples. We are committed to deeply listening to our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and walking together for justice, healing, and flourishing for all. We recognise Voice as an important step along the way to hearing and responding to the long-standing calls to deeply listen to the voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, the need to establish treaties, and the importance of national truth-telling. You, working alongside the Common Grace movement, have a crucial role to play in supporting the Uluru Statement from the Heart, and advocating for an Indigenous Voice to Parliament and for justice. To ensure the referendum on an Indigenous Voice to Parliament is successful, we will need to speak to our leaders, quell the doubts in our churches and in our communities, and show people the ways in which every step towards reconciliation is a step towards justice and the enrichment of every Australian. If our country does not come together in supporting a YES vote at the upcoming referendum on Voice, it will set our efforts for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander justice back decades. In 2023, we will be led by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Christian Leaders in:- Listening deeply to the Indigenous voices of the past and present- Campaigning for a YES vote in the referendum for a constitutionally enshrined Indigenous Voice to Parliament- Advocating to #RaiseTheAge of criminal responsibility in Australia- Grounding everything in Truth-Telling of our shared history and supporting a National Truth-Telling Commission and Treaty-making processesPledge your commitment to join us now in speaking up for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Justice in 2023 at this crucial time for action."
    - This text is taken from the Common Grace website https://www.commongrace.org.au/

To continue listening deeply and engaging with the truth of the history of our nation we invite you to watch and/or listen to the video attached or via link in our bio of Gershon, Bianca and Safina from Common Grace as they share about Aboriginal Sunday, on what it means to look to the voices from the past, so that together we can head into the future.

What is your POSTURE? - Naomi Keane - 8th January 2023

“All this I have spoken while still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” - John 14:25-26

The Holy Spirit will remind us of what we do know and teach us what we don't know.

    What do we know?

God the Father. God of ALL.
Jesus the Friend. Jesus of CHANGE.
Spirit the Helper. Spirit of LIFE

There is comfort in being reminded of what we do know of who God is.

And there is so much more to learn.
What might the Holy Spirit have to teach you?

Are you open to being taught something new?

What posture are you going to take this year are you open to what the Holy Spirit can do in your life?

    Advent: PEACE - Yiqian Chua - 4th December 2022

In the socio-political and economic world that Jesus incarnated into, history serves as a mirror for us to understand the priority and perspective of God’s true Peace. Whatever our identity and position in life, Jesus invites us to steer our hearts towards co-labouring for a communal wholeness, especially among the outcasts. That’s where Jesus is.

    Advent: HOPE - Cory Mitchell - 27th November 2022

“In any divine annunciation, you receive revelation as a gift, yet at the same time you receive notice that all that you had planned is ending. It’s all over. Everything will change—most of all you.
    .
And maybe that is a welcomed change. Maybe you are reading this thinking, God, I could use a change, and maybe you’re ready for such a transformation. But the rub of revelation is that it’s a transformation you’re not in charge of. We all have areas in which we would love transformation.
    .
Maybe for you, it’s your relationship with your in-laws, your finances, your dead-end job with its annoying micromanaging boss, or your unceasing anxiety. But it seems that revelation doesn’t transform the places you want to transform; it transforms all the things you dreamed and planned for your best-case scenario.
    .
It’s not so hard to see that Mary’s transformation could look a lot like ours. How your life would be.” - @scottthepainter, Honest Advent

    November Rain: Wk 1 - Emmanuel Cancino - 6th November 2022

Worshipping God as an act of homage, that is, an act, statement, or gift that is intended to show special honour, gratitude, respect, or admiration publicly, looks like engaging in practices of Christlike imitation; humility, vulnerability, and self-sacrifice - rooted in love.
    .
“By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
    John 13:35
    .
In humility - serving each other, and creating space for the voices and stories from within the community and those on the margins to be heard. .
In vulnerability - being open and honest with one another, dispelling the threat of fear and shame.
    .
Self-Sacrificially - laying down our individual wants and needs, and prioritising the needs of others.

Implementing these practises DAILY, moves us away from the danger of becoming addicted to the “Sunday experience” expressing a shallow, hollow Christianity, and moves us towards TRUE discipleship, depth of relationship, and unity with each other in Christ.

"I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought."
    1 Corinthians 1:10

    Hustle & Flow: Wk 5 - Cory Mitchell - 30th October 2022

    Hustle & Flow: Wk 5 - Cory Mitchell - 30th October 2022

Your trauma, pain and suffering have a role to play in your story - and in your relationship with the Holy Spirit - but they are not the hero of it and they shouldn’t get to define it!
    .
“Most of us carry a bad taste in our mouths – some old hurt (or trauma) that has misinformed our image of God.  It’s high time we cleansed our palates of that bitterness.  I believe God’s healing grace and Jesus’ gospel truth can wash out the sour and prepare us for the sweet, to where His Word (Jesus) becomes like ‘honey on our lips’ (Ps. 119:103).  We’ll taste and see that God (and His Spirit) really is good.”
    - Brad Jersak, A More Christlike God: A More Beautiful Gospel.
    .
Our broken images of the Holy Spirit are often inferred from real life experiences.
    .
    REFLECT…

What experiences have informed or misinformed your image of the Holy Spirit?

Is the Holy Spirit someone you run from in fear or run to for refuge?  Does the Holy Spirit inspire joy or resistance?

What is your most dominant image of the Holy Spirit?  Is it congruent (aligned) with what you have read or encountered in scripture?

Can you share and experience that does align with scripture and what you know of the Jesus-story (The Gospel)?
    .
    RE-ALIGN…

    [2 Corinthians 3: 17 AMP]

“Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty [emancipation from bondage, true freedom].”

    [Romans 15: 13 NLT]

“I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.”

Living an alternative gospel - Tri Nguyen - 25th September 2022

Living an alternative gospel - Tri Nguyen - 25th September 2022

On Sunday, we read that Mark's good news is counter-cultural to the 'gospel' of Caesar.
    .
Marks’ good news is about Jesus, whose prophets foretold would come to comfort (Isaiah) and liberate (Malachi / Elijah/ John).
    .
Jesus (not Caesar) is God's incarnate, who comes not to the powerful elite or temple establishment but to those who experience wilderness and marginalisation.
In Jesus, the Kingdom of God is present, and those who come out of empires to follow Jesus are filled with the presence of the Holy Spirit.
    .
Jesus, overcoming temptations (of empires) in the wilderness, calls all people to go out to the margins and follow him in living an alternative gospel of God's sabbath economy of non-violent liberation and reconciliation in the power of the Holy Spirit.
