    Cancer as a Chronic Disease

In the latest episode of The Cancering Show, Dr. Jennifer Young Pierce delves into the topic of cancer as a chronic disease. It's a thought-provoking discussion that challenges our understanding of cancer and survivorship.

Dr. Pierce emphasizes that cancering is not just a phase or a battle to be won, but an ongoing journey that requires long-term management and adaptation. She shares insights on the concept of cancer as a chronic disease and its implications for patients, survivors and caregivers.

    3 Key Episode Takeaways

    1. Chronic Disease: Dr. Pierce emphasizes that cancer is an ongoing activity, and for most patients, it is a chronic disease even after the initial treatment. This highlights the need for long-term follow-up, potential maintenance medications, and ongoing management.

    2. Lifestyle Impact: For cancer patients, lifestyle changes like getting more sleep, reducing stress, stopping smoking, changing eating habits, and adding more exercise can positively impact the outcome of cancer treatment and decrease the chances of recurrence.

    3. New Normal and Survivorship: Dr. Pierce encourages patients to embrace the concept of a "new normal" after cancer treatment, acknowledging that there may be chronic changes but also the opportunity to see life in a brighter, more joyful way. It's about thriving in the new normal and living the best life possible.

Happy Holidays and have a Happy New Year!

    Dr. JYP says:

"Remember that your gift is your presence. You do not need to expend your energy on a single present for any person. Your friends and family just want you to be there and to be present fully, to really be in the moment and to enjoy your family members. Get your rest, conserve your energy, and then show up for those family events because they really just want you to be there with them."

    3 Key Episode Takeaways

    - It's OK to have mixed emotions during the holidays. Seek joy in the little moments, and don't hesitate to ask for extra support from those who understand what you're going through.

    - Prioritize your safety and well-being. Whether it's attending events, dealing with food restrictions or experiencing financial hardships, know that it's OK to ask for help and make adjustments to accommodate your needs.

    - For caregivers, simplicity and being present are the most valuable gifts you can give. Children remember the moments, not the material things. Focus on spreading love and joy with lower stress this holiday season.

Navigating Pain On The Cancer Journey

Navigating Pain On The Cancer Journey

In this episode of The Cancering Show, Dr. JYP explores the topic of pain and its connection to cancer. She shares a powerful personal story highlighting the importance of addressing and managing pain in cancer patients. She also discusses the types of pain that can arise during the cancer journey, the difference between cancer pain and treatment pain, and when to communicate with your doctor about your pain. Dr. JYP also relates strategies for managing pain at home and the importance of finding the right pain relief methods. Join us as we delve into this crucial aspect of Cancering.

    Key Episode Takeaways

Care For The Caregiver with Dr. Nick Dionne-Odom

Care For The Caregiver with Dr. Nick Dionne-Odom

Care for the Caregiver with Dr. Nick Dionne-Odom | EP36 Cancering

This episode of the Cancering Show focuses on the importance of caregivers in the cancer journey. Dr. Jennifer Young Pierce talks with Dr. Nick Dionne-Odom, associate professor in the School of Nursing at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and co-director of Caregiver and Bereavement Support Services in the UAB Center for Palliative and Supportive Care. They discuss what it means to be a caregiver, how caregiving for someone with a terminal diagnosis is different from caring for those with earlier stage cancers, the physical and mental toll that caregiving can take, and the resources available to help caregivers.

Plus, Dr. Nick Dionne-Odom discusses his research on cancer caregiving. Dr. Dionne-Odom has developed several programs to help family caregivers of cancer patients manage stress and cope with the challenges of caregiving. He discusses his research findings, which show that these programs are beneficial for caregivers, and provides advice on how family and friends can help caregivers. He also talks about the importance of having access to one-on-one support for caregivers, no matter where they live. Lastly, he discusses the grieving process and the types of support available for those who have recently lost a loved one.

"We find that many caregivers that we work with have this feeling that they need to be available 24/7 to this person, be there at all times, and that all activities, all priorities need to be centered around the patient. If one does that and you do not take care of your own health, that is not a sprint; it is a marathon. And being able to take care of yourself is actually a very important way that you can take care of this person."

    – Dr. Nick Dionne-Odom

    Episode Takeaways:

Caregivers are essential in the cancer journey.

Caregiving for someone with a terminal diagnosis is different than caring for those with earlier stage cancers.

Caregiving can have a physical and mental toll on the caregiver.

It is normal to feel anxiety and depression when caring for someone with cancer.

There are resources available to help caregivers.

Dr. Dionne-Odom has developed programs to help family caregivers of cancer patients manage stress and cope with the challenges of caregiving.

Caregivers often experience isolation and may not want to burden their social networks.

Offering specific types of assistance (e.g. cutting the grass, walking the dog, picking up the mail, doing the laundry, making meals etc.) is more likely to be accepted.

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to grieving. Everyone processes loss differently, and it can take months and even years to go through the process.

There is support available for those who have recently lost a loved one, such as the Medicare hospice benefit.

Making Surviving Count with Tamika Felder - Cancering EP32

Our guest today, Tamika Felder, is practically the definition of a Cancering community. When she was diagnosed with cervical cancer at age 25, she didn't feel like she had found a community of survivors who could help walk her through what was ahead of her. So, she CREATED her own community, Cervivor, a nonprofit organization that brings cervical cancer survivors together and helps to spread awareness, education, and support.

On this episode, Dr. JYP and Tamika will be talking about the origins and mission of Cervivor, and also the terrible stigma that women who have reproductive cancers face in our culture. Plus, Tamika will discuss her role in a very important documentary about cervical cancer, HPV, and GYN cancer prevention.
