How Nicola Packman Achieved Remission From MS and is Living A Symptom-free Life

How Nicola Packman Achieved Remission From MS and is Living A Symptom-free Life

In this episode, I speak to Nicola Packman. Nicola was just 25 when she was diagnosed with MS/multiple sclerosis, after the onset of a series of symptoms including going fully blind in one eye. After her world came crashing down, she suffered her rock bottom where at times she questioned if she wanted to continue living with her condition. But she decided to challenge the expectation her diagnosis had put on her, take her health and wellbeing into her own hands, and used nutrition and the power of the belief in her own healing to achieve remission from MS. Nicola is now in the best health (both mental and physical) of her life and lives a fully symptom-free life.

    - Nicola's childhood and life before her health deteriorated
    - The onset of Nicola's symptoms, including fatigue, pins & needles, burning sensations etc, and how it took her going fully blind in one eye to go and see the doctor
    - Her experience of getting diagnosed with multiple sclerosis
    - The two years following Nicola's diagnosis and how this was the darkest period of her life
    - How Nicola had 5 relapses in 18 months
    - The turning point for Nicola, and how she shifted her mindset to not only want to not get worse, but to want to actually get better.
    - The body's ability to heal itself, and how these realisations were the start of Nicola's healing.
    - Nicola's lifestyle now, and how she is living fully symptom-free.
    - The role of nutrition in healing, and how food is medicine.
    - The importance in finding gratitude in every situation.

From Bedbound to Thriving - How "Ribeye Rach" is Recovering Using DNRS and the Carnivore Diet

From Bedbound to Thriving - How "Ribeye Rach" is Recovering Using DNRS and the Carnivore Diet

In this episode, I'm joined by Rachael Elizabeth, also known as "Ribeye Rach" on Instagram. This podcast episode has been a long-time coming - we’ve been trying to arrange it for almost a year now! And interestingly, back when Rachael first found my podcast and we started speaking, she was in a totally different place with her recovery compared to now, so maybe that was the universe at work!

Rachael was always an avid rock climber and athlete, but in 2016 her health rapidly deteriorated, and she was diagnosed with dysautonomia, ehlers-danlos syndrome, chair malformation, craniocervical instability, tethered cord syndrome, intracranial hypertension, gastroparesis, adrenal insufficiency, chronic Lyme disease and much more.

After various treatments and surgeries and no improvement, Rachael was still in “a living hell”, and she hit her lowest point in 2020 when she was essentially bed-bound, having seizures and in a wheelchair.

Starting a Lyme disease treatment protocol brought her out of her bed bound phase, but it was when she found alternative ways of healing that her healing accelerated, changing her life.  Through brain retraining, DNRS and living by a carnivore diet, she is now able to live her life again.

In this conversation, Rachael tells her amazing story and we discuss brain retraining, the power of timing, the distinction between wanting to heal and being ready to heal, the importance of belief in your recovery, and how different treatments work for different people.

    TIMESTAMPS

    0:00 - Intro
    1:33 - Rachael's childhood and upbringing
1:56 - When Rachael's health started deteriorating, and the many conditions and syndromes she was diagnosed with
12:53 - How Rachael started considering looking at alternative methods of healing and nervous system regulation
15:11 - Rachael’s introduction to the carnivore diet
16:24 Starting prolotherapy treatments and finding DNRS brain retraining, which was a turning point in Rachael’s recovery
17:40 Phil’s experience of the carnivore diet
19:51 The importance of timing in recovery, and how Rachael had come across DNRS 5 years before she started it
    21:50 - The timeline of Rachael’s recovery
25:32 - Rachael’s progression, from wheelchair to walking, over the past two years
27.45 - How everything is linked to the nervous system, and how there are so many different ways to regulate the nervous system, and how it looks different for everyone
30:11 - How when you’ve had so much failure before, you co etc expect that each thing you try won’t work
31.00 - Phil and Rachael’s experience of putting so much pressure on each treatment to work and the desperation to find something to help them heal
32:34 - The importance of believing you’ll recover and surrounding yourself with success stories
39:01 - Where Rachael is at now with her healing
42:25 - How it can sometimes be hard to share your recovery when in the midst of it

Podcasting Our Way To Recovery: What Over 200 Episodes Has Taught Us About Chronic Health and How to Heal From CFS/ME, Lyme Disease, Fibromyalgia & So Much More

In this special episode, I'm joined by Chazmith Newton,  host of the Our Power Is Within podcast. Chazmith and I both started our podcasts around the same time and have done over 100 episodes each, and so we decided to come together and share the key insights, lessons and takeaways that we've gained from speaking to the many guests that have been on our shows. There are many synergies to our stories and how our podcasts came about, so it was great to come together and have this conversation.

In this episode, we discuss each of our situations regarding  our own health and how our podcasts first came about, and our shared experience surrounding how hearing success stories of people recovering can be both inspirational but also triggering, and how we've had to navigate that in doing our podcasts. We also discuss the many modalities that our guests have had recovered with, including somatic tracking, brain retraining, breathwork, etc.  We discuss the importance of having faith in divine timing, cultivating a belief that you will recover, learning to trust your body again,  seeking support, and trying to find gratitude within your journey to health.

Phil Parker, Creator of The Lightning Process, Explains How Healing is Possible with Brain Retraining

In this episode, I am excited to have Dr. Phil Parker, creator of The Lightning Process. The Lightning Process is a training programme that teaches people about the way the nervous system control the body, and empowers people with tools that involve gentle movement, meditation-like techniques and mental exercises, with the aim of teaching people how to switch on pathways to promote health and switch off the ones that are not serving you.

In this episode, Phil and I discuss how the Lightning process started and developed, and what it is and what it involves, and practical ways you can incorporate the Lightning Process into your daily life. We also discuss the mind-body connection, and the importance of believing that recovery IS possible, and exposing yourself to positive recovery stories so that this becomes your inner conversation. The Importance of Breath in Chronic Illness Recovery, with Breathwork Facilitator, Satori Clarke

The Importance of Breath in Chronic Illness Recovery, with Breathwork Facilitator, Satori Clarke

This episode is the third and final episode of a mini series where I talk to three people who have been helping me bring about changes in three key areas - movement, sleep and breath.

In this episode I talk with Breathwork facilitator, Satori Clarke. Satori is Head of Research at Breathwork Bali, and Co-Founder of it's BreathLab, and I've been working with her doing one-to-one Breathwork sessions for the last 8 months of so. I've found it a really beneficial practice for me in many ways, including helping me learn to regulate and trust my nervous system, and allowing me to tap into states of rest and relaxation that I struggle to access otherwise.

In this episode, we discuss breath and its power to change the way the nervous system functions, which can in turn alter which parts of our brain and more online.  Satori explains how when we bring conscious awareness to our breath, it will begin to re-pattern our body and how it functions, and the more that we practice it, the more our body will access it unconsciously.

Satori talks me through the different diaphragms we have in our body that assist breathing, and we also discuss various different breathing techniques (cadence breathing, conscious connected breathing, Holotropic breathing etc) and the benefits and states each one can bring about. We also discuss the importance of rest and relaxation and how Breathwork can tap into this by regulating the nervous system, by training it to safely activate and de-activate.

    0:00 - Intro
1:39 - Why breath is one of the most underrated areas to focus on in health?
4:10 - Rapid breathing and hyperventilation disorder, and how your unconscious breathing patterns could be causing you problems
5:45 - The three diaphragms of breath, and how breathing correctly and consciously can increase blood flow and help organs function better
7:00 - Cadence breathing - what it is and the impact practicing it can have
8:00 - Wim Hof breathing (holotropic Breathwork)
9:26 - Conscious connected Breathwork and how it differs to Holotropic Breathwork
11:29 - How conscious connected Breathwork can help create nervous system regulation, teaching it to go into intensity, and then come down and rest and recover.
12:05 - How our culture creates a sense of stress and constant “doing” and the importance of rest and relaxation, and how Breathwork can help with this
12:55 - My experience when I first discovered Breathwork and my early takeaways from the practice
14:55 - My breath and Satori’s observations of how this has changed over the course of time we’ve been working together
16.15 - My experience in learning to trust my nervous system, and how this has been powerful for me
22.40 - “Highly dis-regulated” nervous systems and what this means
    26:28 - What a ‘breath journey’ is
29:13 - Emotion as energy, and how Breathwork and nervous system activation can help this move through the body
35:34 - How Breathwork can help dial down the prefrontal cortex, allowing emotions to emerge.
40:10 - My experience of putting my trust in my nervous system, and how breathwork has helped me on my chronic health journey.
47:14 - The importance of being properly supported in breathwork (not being guided virtually/online)
51:37 - Cadence breathing as an starting point for those without access to a facilitator, and its benefits
56:13 - Satori’s work with Breath Lab, at Breathwork Bali, and their research

The Importance of Sleep In Chronic Illness Recovery, with Sleep Coach, Gary Allman

The Importance of Sleep In Chronic Illness Recovery, with Sleep Coach, Gary Allman

This episode is the second of a mini series where I talk to three people who have been helping me bring about changes in three key areas - movement, sleep and breath. In this episode I chat with Sleep Coach, Gary J Allman, owner of Sleep & Perform, who I worked with last year to help me commit to getting my sleep in order and to hold me accountable to those simple sleep hygiene habits that we all know we should be doing but are hard to be consistent with.

Sleep is one of the key pillars of health, and it’s so important to be prioritising it when battling chronic issues and trying to optimise health.

In this conversation, we speak about how DNA can affect your sleep, the difference between REM and Deep sleep, and the role that consistent sleep and wake times, nutrition, and hydration play in regulating your circadian rhythms and melatonin production, and why this is so important. Gary also shares numerous sleep optimisation tips, and shares his wisdom answering some of the questions you sent in.

The Importance of Movement in Chronic Illness Recovery, with my Trainer, Jonson Tan

The Importance of Movement in Chronic Illness Recovery, with my Trainer, Jonson Tan

This episode is the first of a mini series where I’ll be talking to three people who have been helping me in three key areas - movement, sleep and breath.

In this episode I chat with my trainer Jonson, Co-founder and Head Coach of Nirvana Strength here in Canggu, Bali. I started working with Jonson approximately 14 months ago, and as you may have seen from my posts, when we started working together we were doing the smallest of exercises, to slowly increase my mobility and strength, and more importantly, to build up my confidence in my own bodies ability to move and recover.

In this conversation, we talk about how Jonson and I have worked together over the last year, how things have progressed for me both in terms of physicality but also mindset, when to know how to push and how to hold back, and flare ups and how they are all part of the process.

How Luanne Hopkinson from a Multitude of Chronic Symptoms by Promoting her Body's Natural Ability to Heal

In this episode, I speak to Luanne Hopkinson about her chronic health issues and how she overcame them.

Luanne suffered for decades from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), heartburn, eczema, anxiety, food intolerance and hormone issues, manifesting in chronic issues such as anxiety, heartburn, bloating, abdominal cramps, nausea, histamine intolerance, mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS) and ME/CFS.

After years of suffering, and a crash when she hit her 40s, she began on a path of investigating how she could heal herself, and through meditation,  brain retraining and learning about her gut health and intolerances, she was able to promote her own body's natural healing processes and restore her health. She now works as a nutritional medical practitioner, helping others improve their health in the same way, as well as supporting the use of  diet and supplementation where necessary.

Annie developed DRNS in 2008, after she herself fully recovered from unexplained illnesses by implementing her own daily program of brain-based rehabilitation, which focused on rewiring faulty neutral pathways in the brain.

Here, she explains the five pillars of her program and how you can rewire your brain to recover from chronic illness.
