    Monday Musings: Getting a Colonoscopy

    Monday Musings: Getting a Colonoscopy

I believe in preventative health and today I am discussing my experience getting my first colonoscopy at the age of 52. The recommended age for colonoscopies is now 45 instead of 50. I think many people put it off because they don’t know what is going to happen, so I’m going into detail (without sharing TMI) so you can feel prepared. I put my colonoscopy off for too long because I didn’t have enough information, so I wanted to share what I know based on what I went through in case it helps you. Also, my colonoscopy was incomplete and I don’t want that to happen to you. Maybe knowing what happened to me can prevent the same thing from happening to you. This episode is not advice and is for entertainment purposes only. Anything dealing with your health should be discussed with your trusted healthcare provider

Monday Musings with Michele: How to Turn Envy into Admiration

Monday Musings with Michele: How to Turn Envy into Admiration

Have you ever considered that envy and admiration are two sides of the same coin. How? When we admire someone it’s because of something they’ve done and how they show up in the world. We respect something about them. Now, flip the coin and on the other side you may find envy, which is not a positive feeling about someone. BUT, it may be because of you would like to accomplish something they’ve accomplished or wishing you could do what they do. Instead of feeling admiration, envy pops up. When you are feeling envious of someone, you can flip the coin. That person is a mirror showing you what you really want. What a gift that person is in your life. Ask yourself what it is about that person that makes you feel envious. Is it their influence, what they do, their knowledge — it’s key to get clear. When you are able to identify what it is about that person that triggers the envy, you are gaining great insights into what you actually want for your life. Start looking at them with admiration and gratitude. To attract what you want, you’ll want to be in a high vibe state and sending out good in the world. That person is mirroring what is possible! Use envy as a piece of the puzzle about where you want to go. When you see this it’s easy to flip the emotion to admiration.

How to be More Productive (12 Week Year) + Live in Alignment with Your Life’s Vision: Brian Moran (rerun)

“If the average person just more consistently did what they already know they’d be healthier, happier, and be making more money.” – Brian Moran

Brian Moran, the New York Times bestselling author of “The 12 Week Year: Get More Done in 12 Weeks than Others Do in 12 Months,” is going to share how to get more done in less time. He will take us into the execution system he developed while also sharing easy-to-implement time management strategies. He also connects the dots back to why it is important to create our life vision so we can structure our time and goals around that vision. You will learn tactical steps that you can implement today to move closer to the life you desire. This is a fan-favorite episode that I re-run before the New Year.

    WHAT YOU’LL LEARN:

    1. Why the 12 week year is an execution system and how that helps you get more done in less time.
    2. It’s not enough to know.  You have to execute.  Knowledge is only powerful if you act on it.
    3. Get out of the annual environment.  With this program, you are going to stop after 12 weeks and that is your year.  Measure your success or failure and measure the progress and then go again.  It’s a fluid process.  You can use  this professionally or personally.  You can do  anything for 12 weeks and then decide is that somethingI want to do again.
    4. Your vision is you’re why.   Your goals NEED to align with the vision.
    5. At the goal level, know the difference between goals and tactics and outcomes and actions.  The actions we have control over.  Goals are outcomes.
    6. Make sure at the goal level that is measurable – it’s an outcome.
    7. Determine what are the most important actions.  Most plans are conceptual not tactical.  You need to spell out the specific actions and focus on “less is more”.
    8. Stay connected to your vision by putting the longer term vision in front of you – laminate a card you can look at every day. Create visual reminders.
    9. The difference between a habit and routine is key.   Ex, going to the gym is a routine not a habit and routines are what drive success.  How you begin and end your day needs a routine.  The key is to start off positive.   End your day with gratitude.
    10. How to manage time.  Time blocking – 3 core blocks:
      A. Strategic Block -3 hours blocked during the week.  No interruptions – working on the business not in the business. THIS CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE.
      B. Buffer Blocks – these are designed to deal with the emails/low level stuff.  Ex, I return calls between 4-5pm.  Don’t check your emails when they come in. Block time in to address it.
      C. Break out blocks – schedule time away from work to do something just for you to recharge.

The Four Disciplines of the 12 Week Year

    1. Vision – You have to know what you want.
    2. Planning – You have to ask – “What matters most?”
    3. Execution – Then ask, “Am I doing it?”
    4. Measurement – “Is it producing?”

Learn How Memory Works and What Normal Forgetting Is with Neuroscientist Dr. Lisa Genova (rerun)

Learn How Memory Works and What Normal Forgetting Is with Neuroscientist Dr. Lisa Genova (rerun)

“We have a human brain whose memory system is amazing and wildly imperfect.” – Lisa Genova

New York Times bestselling author Lisa Genova joins us for a conversation about her book, Remember: The Science of Memory and the Art of Forgetting. What does normal forgetting look like? How do we improve our memory? How do we create a memory? What’s the distinction between normal forgetting and forgetting because of Alzheimer’s? What are some preventative measures we can easily incorporate to protect our memory? Lisa is a wealth of information and I am honored she is here to share the information from her recent book! So much to learn today and to feel empowered.

About the author: Lisa has her PhD in Neuroscience from Harvard, is an acclaimed author, and has a TED Talk with over five million views. She also has appearances on the Today Show, CNN, and NPR, Dr. Oz and many more outlets.

    WHAT YOU’LL LEARN:

    1. It is okay to google the name of an actor whose name you can’t remember.  Young people who have used tech since birth just google without worrying about it, but most older adults believe we have to figure it out ourselves.
    2. Tip of the tongue – words like proper nouns, movie titles, names of cities – and why we have trouble recalling those names.
    3. Why “Memory isn’t stored in any one place.”
    4. Why in order to create a lasting memory it has to go through the hippocampus.
    5. You can’t remember what you don’t pay attention to.  This is the first thing to do to create memory.
    6. Outsourcing some things like taking a picture of where you parked isn’t going to make you dumber.  It is okay to use tech to help you remember.
    7. Our human brains are terrible at prospective planning.
    8. Context plays a big role in remembering things.  The second you are surrounded by cues you remember.  It helps to retrace your steps to trigger the cues.
    9. To do lists, pill boxes, checkboxes are all helpful for prospective memory.
    10. “The act of learning is remembering.  Memory is outstanding.  We can learn infinite amounts of things.”
    11. It’s not true that we only use 10 percent of our brain.
    12. Our brain is changing all of the time.  Every time you are learning something new your brain creates more neural pathways.
    13. We have the ability to create new neurons/nerve cells.
    14. Chronic stress will shrink the hippocampus.
    15. Meditation, yoga, mindfulness, exercise, staying socially active and learning new things helps to enlarge our hippocampus.
    16. Being sedentary makes you more likely to develop Alzheimer’s.
    17. Being active decreases your risk by half.
    18. Processing speeds slow down as we age a little bit, but we know more.
    19. Sleep is key.  The data is compelling – we need 7-9 hours of sleep to process what we’ve learned and to clear metabolic debris while we sleep.
    20. Alzheimer’s happens in the hippocampus – war in this area – first symptoms are not remembering what someone just said or repeating themselves — the present memory keeps cycling through.
    21. Prevention is key.  Lisa shares what she does for preventative measures.
    22. Eat a Mediterranean diet.
    23. Exercise.  Go for walks — move around every day. Your entire body wants and needs that.
    24. “This book is about your relationship with memory. We are afraid of it. We are judgmental  of it.  We don’t understand it.  It’s also imperfect.  Be in awe of it and take good care of it.”
