Working Through Complacency and Perfectionism [EP:31]

In this episode, Todd and Jen talk about mindset, complacency, and perfectionism.

    What is complacency?

Creating an environment that promotes focus.

    How to take action.

    Taking risks.

Keeping a beginner's mindset because when you first learn something, you won't be good.

The act of accumulating knowledge alone doesn't do much for you.

It's OK to have a bad day, week, month, quarter, or year.  Just get back at it.

What Todd thinks when someone tells him "I'm a perfectionist."

Getting around trying to be "perfect"

    Break things down.

    Celebrate small wins often.

Without action, we're back at complacency.

Even if your action doesn't work out, you've learned.

    Just try!

Some days we win and some days we fall on our faces.

Running a Business Together: The Impact on Our Relationship Outside of Work [EP:30]

Running a Business Together: The Impact on Our Relationship Outside of Work [EP:30]

A behind the scenes look at how running a business, as a couple, can impact a relationship outside of work.

Turning to your audience to find out what direction to take.

A story from a past business.

    Challenges a partnership will face.

Knowing your roles and tasks. (What you do, and what your partner does.)

We're 50/50 partners....how do we decide if we disagree?

How to create an honest roles and tasks list.

Changing color lines and the decision making process behind that.

Considering your staff.  (Because we do.)

    Who wants to be bored?!

    Pride.

    Balancing act.

    Having an in-house, brand educator.

    Core values.

Finding our that certain companies...well...make shit up.

    Efficient communication creates speed.

    The ability to maneuver.

Being business partners, parents, and a married couple.

    The importance of boundaries.

Have a way to 'tap out' and mean it.

Creating these systems for our business made us FAR better parents and stronger partners outside of work.

Road block!  And the honesty that came out of it.

You do NOT need to be the best technically to own a business.

    The importance of communication.

    Candor.
the quality of being open and honest in expression; frankness.

An open invitation to the cleanest salon (Hello Hair Co.) to anyone listening.  And not in a negative, but simply because we want to help.

Give the opportunity to your team to meet your expectations through candor.

Our relationship is better than it's ever been.  Sorry, haters.  Still love ya!

Our arguments are efficient and respectful.  Courtroom style.

If you have kids, make sure you're making up in front of them and not just disagreeing in front of them.

Be a role model in the open not just when it's comfortable.

    CommunicaSHING!  :)

    Fo Sho!

It's OK to talk about stuff.  It's OK to get stuff off of your chest.

This is work.  (and it should be!)

The trickle down effect into our family.

Finally, We Talk About the Pandemic [EP:29]

Finally, We Talk About the Pandemic [EP:29]

In this week's episode, Jen & Todd chat about the pandemic.

Today's episode is brought to you by PingPong Design + Marketing.  Digital marketing & design for the health, beauty & fitness industries.  PingPong wants to make the internet a better place.  Check them out in the link below!

    The pandemic hits.

No one knows what's going on but they pretend to.

Opening Hello Hair Co, but delayed, because of ya know, the pandemic.

Dealing with retail repackaging, and bad advice from certain distributors.

Creating cleaning systems that worked not only for a new business but also to cover restrictions.

Deciding to hold off on opening even after being "allowed."

    Bad advice, and rampant misinformation.

Financial help, gray areas, and who got missed.

How we remained in contact with people who actually knew what was happening.

    Don't hide money.

At home learning with kids and online school, keeping in contact with our team, barber school but on Zoom, oh, and a baby.

Pro Tip: Hair pros STILL need to clean.

    Hair Pros are NOT essential.

    Hair schools tried their best.

    Fact: Mandates are not law.

Living free or dying and having a lawyer ready if the gov tried to shut us down again.

How the pandemic gave some business owners an out.

What a Real Education Program Looks Like [EP:28]

What a Real Education Program Looks Like [EP:28]

Todd & Jen talk about what a real education program looks like.

Today's episode is brought to you by PingPong Design + Marketing.  Digital marketing & design for the health, beauty & fitness industries.  PingPong wants to make the internet a better place.  Check them out in the link below!

We kick off by making sure the definition of education is understood both so that as business partners they're on the same page and second so that the salon team knows what's expected.

Maintaining a beginner's mindset.  You can ALWAYS learn something from ANYONE if you don't have a bad mindset.

Why "watching each other" is a bad game plan and doesn't work.

Stop assuming that you're supposed to know everything.

How they employ constructive criticism with candor.

Why the Hello education program is not for everyone, and we love it that way.

    Resources needed to educate.

Bad educators make things about them.

The importance of being able to pivot and adjust as an educator.

Hello Hair Co and weekly classes.

    Leveraging a contagious atmosphere.

Why the 'owner' doesn't need to be the center of attention.

How much coaching and mentoring goes into running and building a team.  (If you want it to actually work.)

Education is more than learning to do a haircut.  Components like consultation and posture often get overlooked.

Opening your mind and being OK with not being great at something.

An honest effort is a requirement.

Not everyone makes it through our education program.  There's an expectation of advancement.

What shadowing looks like at Hello.  It's NOT doing other people's shampoos and sweeping.  It's learning, experiencing, conversing, and growing so that you can take new ideas back to your salon home and apply them.

How to Fast Track Your Career [EP:27]

How to Fast Track Your Career [EP:27]

"The accumulation of non-applied knowledge is one of the fastest roads to mediocrity."

Here is some stuff we decided to plop in the show notes because ya know, we talk about it in this show.  Enjoy!

Todd and Jen talk about education.

Jen compares and gives her opinion on virtual learning vs. hands-on vs. a school setting.

Why do some people not apply their skillset and accumulate knowledge repeatedly?

    The mastery equation.

The shadowing process at Hello Hair Co.

What to avoid to get ahead and what to take on.

Focus and practice in a manner that gets you ahead.

A mentor can help you succeed and the importance of finding the right ones along the way.

Putting yourself in vulnerable positions to drive success.

Build your foundation wider by dialing things down at first.

Find a workplace with core values that line up with your own by asking the right questions.
