    E17: Effecting Change

    The Compound Effect (1:42)

Would you rather have 1 million dollars in cash or a penny that duplicates in value over the course of the next 30 days? Tune in to find out how much that penny turns into.

    New Year, New Me (3:51)

We overestimate what we can accomplish in a month but we underestimate what we can accomplish in a year. The end of 2023 is near, which means new years resolutions are already beginning to take shape for some folks. We’re thinking about changes to make for next year, and there has to be a foundational understanding that habits and consistency are going to be the catalyst to help us achieve our desired results.

    Quitter’s Day (9:39)

Statistically speaking, over half of the people who created New Year’s resolutions will have already quit their resolutions by the second Friday in January, which is known as Quitter’s Day.

    Habits (11:20)

Growth and comfort can’t co-exist. Studies show that it takes 66 days, on average, to form a habit. Habits are not a finish line to be crossed. Rather, they’re a lifestyle to be lived.

    The J Curve (13:41)

For many of us, we quit too early when new challenges get too hard. At times, we quit when we begin to feel discomfort. By quitting, we’re robbing ourselves of opportunities to experience growth.

Whether it’s guests who bring incredible information, or topics we can all relate to like effecting change, if you enjoy this podcast, I think you’ll enjoy Leading a Legacy, which dives into how we can live today to make an impact for tomorrow. The legacy we lead determines the legacy we leave.

E16: Closing the Trust Gap w/ Cory Scheer

E16: Closing the Trust Gap w/ Cory Scheer

No matter the industry or level of leadership, most people share a collective, honest desire to be a part of an organization with a high level of trust.

Guest Cory Scheer is the Founder and CEO of TrustCentric Consulting, an organizational and leadership development firm. He is also a published author of his brand new book Closing the Trust Gap, and he shares with us why trust is so important and how it can be established within teams and organizations.

    Introduction (3:01)

A Kansas City, Missouri native, Cory leads with what matters most, his family, and opens up about the journey of an entrepreneur.

    The Book (5:05)

He opens up about how the title Closing the Trust Gap was created, which also is his goal for his company… to help close the trust gaps that are often times very pervasive within organizations.

    The Trust Proposition (6:43)

We’re familiar with a value proposition, but why is the trust proposition more important? Cory shares information backed by research and data that supports the concept that the truth of something comes before the worth of something.

    Building Blocks of Trust (12:25)

There are 3 building blocks of trust, beginning with competency. The second is the building block of problem solving. The most important thing TrustCentric’s research shows is not the process of problem solving… it’s actually finding the right problem to solve. He shares that employees get frustrated when their leaders are not accurately identifying the problem to solve. The third building block is caring for others. This is where things like empathy, sympathy, emotional intelligence, and appreciative inquiry come in to play.

The number one way to strengthen the building block of trust, of caring for others, is by actively listening.

    Never Sell. Only Serve (20:03)

If you’re involved with sales in any way, approaching the sale with a servant-mindset and a trustworthy approach is going to go a long way. Be competent, demonstrate a level of understanding for what their problem is, and show care and concern for them.

    Organizational Trust Assessment (22:30)

TrustCentric believes that it’s impossible to have any kind of a solution-oriented conversation or engagement with a client unless they’re doing some type of an assessment, so the first step in the TrustCentric process is the organizational trust assessment.

The assessment consists of 49 data points that covers all three of the aforementioned building blocks. It is the tip of the spear for the work that TrustCentric does.

    More About The Book

Closing the Trust Gap is designed to provide you with a clear understanding of the chasms in trust that currently plague all industries and have significant implications for the work you do, the teams you lead, and the organizations in which you serve.

This book has the power to help you transform trust from something that is commonly illusive to something that becomes tactical, tangible, and transformational.

This book will be an invaluable resource for you, your team, and your organization to improve employee retention, increase productivity, and strengthen workplace culture as a result of closing the trust gap.

    E15: Creativity & Innovation

    E15: Creativity & Innovation

In a world that’s always evolving, creativity and innovation is more critical than ever.

Today’s ‘great’ is tomorrow's 'good', and forward thinking can help us maintain greatness, but what happens when we can’t seem to see the forest through the trees when it comes to enhancing or evolving?

In this episode, Josh reads from his new book releasing in January titled “Leading a Legacy”, and shares 5 practical ways we can become more creative.

    Disrupt Your Routine (6:15)

Stepping out of your comfort zone by being spontaneous can build your self-confidence and courage.

Embracing change and new experiences demonstrates your ability to adapt and thrive.

The more you welcome the unknown, the more resilient and confident you become, ready to face whatever life brings your way.

    Be an Effective Communicator (7:26)

Effective communication begins with clear and confident expression. When you communicate, it's important to articulate your thoughts and ideas in a way that others can easily understand.

This means speaking or writing in a straightforward manner, avoiding jargon, or overly complicated language. By doing this, you ensure that your message is accessible to a wider audience, making it easier for others to engage with your ideas and information.

Ask and You Shall Receive (9:13)

Multiple minds are better than one! It’s important to ask questions, seek feedback, and embrace change as a pathway to personal growth and a brighter future.

What questions will you ask today, and what steps will you take to make a positive change in your life and the world around you?

    Network (12:44)

Networking and collaboration is truly a win-win situation.

You gain access to a collective pool of knowledge and creativity, receive invaluable support, and build a network that can help you succeed in both your personal and professional endeavors.

So, don't hesitate to reach out to your peers and embrace the concept that multiple minds are indeed better than one. Together, you can achieve great things!

Embrace the Possibility of Failure (14:31)

Embracing the possibility of failure can be a powerful catalyst for personal growth.

When we acknowledge that failure is a natural part of life, we open ourselves up to new experiences and opportunities.

It's through our failures that we learn valuable lessons, develop resilience, and gain a deeper understanding of ourselves.

Instead of fearing failure, we should welcome it as a stepping stone on our journey to success.

Remember, many of the world's greatest innovators and achievers encountered failures along the way before reaching their goals.

Each episode, I try to bring you new ideas, new insights, and new information regarding all things leadership.

Whether it’s guests who bring incredible information, or topics we can all relate to like creativity and innovation, if you enjoy this podcast, I think you’ll enjoy my new book coming out in January titled Leading a Legacy, which dives into how we can live today to make an impact for tomorrow. The legacy we lead determines the legacy we leave, so stay with me, because more news about the book will be released in the coming weeks, but be on the lookout to pre-order your copy VERY soon!

Have a great day, everyone. Don’t forget to smile today. Tell your loved ones how much they mean to you, and keep leading well.

E14: Payne to Purpose w/ Beau Payne

E14: Payne to Purpose w/ Beau Payne

Our guest this week is Beau Payne. A US Army Infantry Veteran, MLB draft pick of the Florida Marlins, keynote speaker, podcast host, recovery coach, published author and most importantly, a recovering alcoholic and addict.

Following a tumultuous upbringing, riddled with familial and substance abuse, Beau entered adulthood with no aim or direction in life.

On this episode, he shares his story of finding himself in prison for the second time, finally confronting his past pain before being released. He shares that despite our past mistakes, there is a hope beyond understanding- a hope that offers a new season.

A hope that brings purpose to our pain.

    Introduction (1:20)

Beau shares his story about having a checkered past, which includes over ten years in prison. Now he uses his leadership platform to give back to men and women by helping them with their sobriety and being a beacon of hope for the lost.

    Payne to Purpose (4:18)

Beau talks about his first book and the pain he endured as a child. He wrote the book because his story is his medicine, and his message impacts people who have been or are going through similar circumstances in their own lives.

    Freedom (9:01)

Beau shares the greatest benefit he's received from his sobriety. He talks about living in fear, but has never played the victim. He opens up about the pain and hurt people go through but don't have the means, resources, or skillset to effectively manage it. His goal is to bring hope to the hopeless.

    A Loss of Identity (16:04)

Beau grew up as a star athlete and really struggled with the loss of identity when sports were no longer a part of his life. This is when he turned to alcohol, and eventually landed back in prison. It was during his second prison sentence when he began to identify as a leader. He told himself he had to make a serious change, so he started going to church and going to AA and NA. But he saw the effect he was having on people and it prompted him to make more changes to impact and lead people.

    The Ripple Effect (21:30)

It starts with one person. It can be you. It can be me. It can be us. But it starts with one, and the ripple effect we see takes place is the reason for it all.

    Expectations (22:47)

Beau talks about letting go of expectations because everything falls into place if he handles his day to day one day at a time. We still want to set goals, but we can lower and even let go of uncontrollable expectations and, instead, focus on what we can control.

    Purpose (29:49)

Beau was hopeless for so long. His purpose in life today is to stay sober, and to help other people achieve sobriety. With purpose, there's nothing that any of us can't accomplish.  For those struggling with addiction... there are better days coming. There's hope, and it brings purpose to our pain.

E13: Mirror Mirror w/ Julie Nee

E13: Mirror Mirror w/ Julie Nee

On this impactful episode, Julie Nee shares how to wipe away the fog and shine! Julie is a trainer, speaker, leader, author, and cancer survivor. She brings an energy and positivity to everyone she comes in contact with, and this interview was no different.

    Introduction (1:22)

Julie shares her backstory, and a brief history of her role at the Hershey company, the impact that “The Energy Bus”, a book by Jon Gordon, had on her, and ultimately her career leap into working for Jon at The Jon Gordon Companies.

    The Journey (3:40)

After leaving Hershey, Julie’s desire to get the message of “The Energy Bus” into the world started with a handful of free workshops and speaking events, and traction began to build over time.

Ultimately, Julie, Jon, and Julie’s teammate Amy P. Kelly, were able to co-create training programs and workshops around The Energy Bus, The Power of Positive Leadership, and The Power of Positive Teams to help build more positive teams and cultures.

    The Leap (6:11)

Julie shares what it was like to take the leap from Hershey into the unknown. She shares the thoughts and feelings about the grind and the convenience of the direct deposits and security that comes along with it, but then all of a sudden it’s not there anymore.

She shares about the times she would often have imposter syndrome and then use her own teachings to feed herself with the positive to ultimately weed out the negative and overcome limited beliefs.

    Mirror Mirror (12:25)

Julie shares the message of her book and the 5 reflections to clear the fog and help you shine. FOG stands for “forgetting our greatness”. The structure of her book is built around an acronym for the word “shine”.

    S.H.I.N.E. (13:18)

Smile- The act of turning the corners of your mouth upwards releases serotonin and helps with things like depression. Smiles are contagious!

Harmonize- Dreams, words, and actions must be in alignment and harmony to make progress. If we’re all talk and no action, we’re not going to get there.

Impact- There’s a hug piece inside this section around self awareness and the major gap that many of us don’t realize exists. “What’s it like to be on the other side of me?”

Nourish- Before we nourish ourselves, we have to know ourselves to know what we need. Figure out what works for you, and do it. Practice gratitude!

Elevate- It’s about learning and growing. Then who and what are you surrounding yourself with?

    Overcoming!!! (22:35)

In 2018, Julie’s life was rocked with a breast cancer diagnosis, and 2019 became a journey of overcoming. She shares about the work she and Jon were doing, and it was truly what kept her going. She endured over 30 rounds of chemotherapy, hair loss, a mastectomy, and multiple surgeries. Despite it all, Julie’s positivity never wavered, and her work became her purpose.

Have a great day, everyone. Don’t forget to smile today. Tell your loved ones how much they mean to you. I’m Josh Parnell, reminding you to keep leading well.

    E12: Effective Communication

    E12: Effective Communication

When there’s a breakdown in communication, a void gets created, and oftentimes negativity fills that void.

In this episode, we learn about the importance of communicating for the sake of connecting.

Introduction and Questions We Can Consider (3:10)

We learn about our guest and her passion for helping and supporting others. Season shares how she got into the field of human resources and how that experience narrow the trajectory her life has gone in.

    HUA! (4:32)

Heard, Understood, and Acknowledged. These are things that every person wants to feel when we’re communicating with them. Leaders are not born, they’re created. Leadership is a skill that needs to be practiced in order to make progress.

    Assume Positive Intent (8:01)

When we’re able to assume positive intent, we can very quickly begin to eliminate negativity and toxicity. One of the greatest mistakes that any of us can make is assuming all of our thoughts are true, so the only assumption we should be making is that of positive intent. People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.

Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood (10:46)

This is one of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, a fantastic book by Stephen Covey. There are 3 conversations that often occur for the one that’s actually happening… the one that you’re having, the one that I’m having, and the one that we’re having.

Fall In Love With Asking Questions (12:56)

Live a life of curiosity and we’re guaranteed to stay committed to being a lifelong learner. The more questions we can ask, the more understanding we have of the people we’re trying to connect with. Now we have the opportunity to best serve them since we have more information to go off of.

Furthermore, the types of questions that we ask are critical. We want to avoid ‘yes’ or ‘no’ responses, so we’re going to focus on open ended questions that warrant some dialogue.

    LISTEN!!! (18:05)

There’s a difference between hearing someone and listening to someone. When we’re hearing someone, we’re simply waiting for them to stop talking so we can tell them what we want to say. When we’re listening, we’re receiving information, we’re processing information, and we’re utilizing information to best serve that person.

    Implement the ‘No-Complaining Rule’ (18:44)

If there’s a problem, bring a solution to the table. Negativity slowly seeps in and creeps in when we allow complaining to continue.

Have a great day, everyone. Don’t forget to smile today. Tell your loved ones how much they mean to you. I’m Josh Parnell, reminding you to keep leading well.

    E9: The Walk-On Mentality w/ Russell Doup

    E9: The Walk-On Mentality w/ Russell Doup

Russell Doup is an LPL financial planner, a motivational speaker, and NCAA football champion.

As a former collegiate walk-on himself, Russell joins us to share what it means to lead with a “walk-on mentality”. This is a message on opportunities, and the incredible things that can happen when we decide to capture them.

    Russell Doup Introduction (1:40)

We learn about our guest and his incredible mindset that all of us could stand to adopt. Russell “kicks” things off by sharing his story, his background, and the motivation behind his walk-on mentality.

What is the Walk-On Mentality? (3:08)

We all have a subconscious potential that we need to discover. Russell does a deep dive on the walk-on mentality, beginning with the first key, of being open to opportunities.

Why Do We Say “No” to Opportunities? (8:07)

We all do it. We make a decision based on limiting beliefs. We don’t get to experience the incredible benefits of not being afraid of rejection. Russell shares his unlikely story about joining his high school football TEAM as a senior.

Walking On at THE Ohio State University (10:18)

Russell’s father suggested that they invest in kicking lessons without expectations beyond high school. His kicking coach then suggested that Russell considered kicking in college because he had a strong leg. After making a recruiting tape, he thought “What’s the worst that could happen if I sent this in to Ohio State?”. He fully expected the best thing to happen was a rejection letter he could get and hold on to for a cool story. Instead, OSU replied and asked him if he was interested in trying out!

Click HERE to watch Russell's Recruiting Tape referenced in this episode.

How can I be the big fish in the big pond? (14:51)

We often don’t consider the opportunity to be the greatest possible outcome there could be. Rather, we unintentionally settle because of limiting beliefs and a scarcity mindset. Russell breaks down this concept and helps us understand the importance of adopting an abundance mindset.

    On the Grind (19:13)

Russell shares what he does as an LPL Financial Planner, and how he helps his clients get from point “A” to point “B”. The approach that really sets Russell apart from the rest is his concept of financial leadership. He walks alongside his clients on their journey, and Russell is always available for them along the way.

Find Out Why Urban Meyer Kicked the TEAM Out of the Locker Room! (26:40)

E8: The Pete Coleman Method w/ Pete Coleman

E8: The Pete Coleman Method w/ Pete Coleman

Husband, Father, and Workflow Guru, Pete Coleman joins us to share his powerful story about transformation and change.

Professionally, Pete developed a method that was a game changer for Christian Brothers Automotive, an automotive repair franchise spanning 30 states and over 280 locations. This method is used across the national brand to improve and enhance shop productivity, workflow management, and professional development.

Personally, Pete's emotional yet triumphant story of weight loss, dying on an operating table, and getting a second chance at life is one that is a true testimony of resilience, love, and endurance. Pete's radical change continues to inspire and impact thousands nationwide.

    The Pete Coleman Method (5:15)

Pete shares the financial growth he was able to help his first Christian Brothers Automotive location experience in a short amount of time, and shares the impact that his method had from a growth and development standpoint.

Life isn’t what happens to you; it’s how you react (10:08)

If you can’t stick to a process, you’re going to just spin your wheels. Pete talks about the ‘special sauce’ that so many people have asked him for over the years. The reality is that attitude and effort play a critical factor, and surrounding yourself with an incredible TEAM of people is all part of the recipe.

“I spent a long time lying to the guy in the mirror” (13:33)

Pete opens up about his weight loss journey. At his heaviest, he weighed in at 575 lbs. After gastric surgery, Pete put his work ethic to the test and applied himself to eventually lose over 300 lbs in just over a year. He went in for a routine surgery to repair a belly button hernia he had for years but was unable to get it taken care of because of his weight.

    “There’s a strong chance you don’t wake up” (19:14)

That same night, he began experiencing a setback and found himself back in a hospital room after internal blood loss (4.5 liters) and a blood pressure of 33 over nothing. He sensed the urgency of the situation, and then it got incredibly real. The doctor gave Pete the phone, told him it was his wife, and told him to say his goodbyes.

    Gratitude (21:26)

God spared Pete for a reason. Pete questioned why for a long time, but chose to live everyday moving forward to make an impact and leave people and things better. He opens up about his desire to help and leave a legacy.

“Thank God I can talk about God” (22:55)

Pete shares his gratitude to be alive, to have a second chance at life, and to work in a brand whose mission is to further God’s kingdom.

    “It’s going to pass” (30:41)

We don’t know what the final chapter looks like, but God does. Control the controllables. If I can influence the outcome, focus on that. Lean on people. Seek counsel, gain wisdom, don’t isolate yourself, and turn to God.

Have a great day, everyone. Don’t forget to smile today. Tell your loved ones how much they mean to you. I’m Josh Parnell, reminding you to keep leading well.

E7: The Calm and Confident Leader w/ Jason Stonehouse

E7: The Calm and Confident Leader w/ Jason Stonehouse

On this episode, Author, Pastor, Executive Coach, and Strategist Jason Stonehouse shares his background in leadership, how he broke free from his struggles with anxiety, and how he’s using his experience to help others lead more effectively.

    Leading Volunteers (2:20)

Jason shares the challenges that come with leading volunteers.

He shares how important it is to create a culture that casts vision, and helps people recognize that they’re a part of something much larger than themselves.

He talks about why it’s necessary to inspire, motivate, and encourage them to have a sense of ownership of the role they’re volunteering and serving in.

The Calm and Confident Leader (3:25)

Jason shares his leadership background and the anxiety struggles that came with it. He ultimately went on a journey of therapy, research, and discussions with many leaders in various capacities on how to break free from anxiety.

Initially Jason started talking about how to break free from anxiety, but then went deeper into learning about how to be calm in the midst of our chaotic world, and how to be confident even when we’re dealing with insecurities.

Why Jason Wrote the Book (5:12)

He began coaching executive leaders on how to break free from anxiety, but the realization of how many people he could help became clear after only being able to coach people 1-on-1, so he wrote the book to take what he does in coaching to reach the masses.

Can People Truly Overcome Anxiety? (7:38)

Jason discusses how (through his coaching and the book) we can discover the signs that trigger us and recover quickly. We learn that through proper coaching and adoption of the tools and skills, we can rebound from triggers quicker than before. We dive into practical steps on how to manage emotions and feelings so that they don’t overtake us.

Where Do Leaders Struggle the Most? (12:03)

The World Health Organization shared that anxiety, stress, and depression is costing the marketplace $1 billion per year. CEO’s and Executives are beginning to address the mental health issues that employees are facing. Prior to the pandemic, the focus was on the external, the ROI, the bottom line. How much money can you bring in? Now, post-pandemic, the focus has shifted to the internal one rather than the external one. The focus is on the person before the process.

    Take Ownership (18:48)

“Problems are external to who people are”. Leaders struggle when they look at their people and the external circumstances and begin pointing the finger rather than taking ownership. We are 100% responsible for everything we think, everything we feel, and everything we do. We make a choice.

This was a fun episode, and an incredibly informative one. I highly recommend you give this one a listen, and please leave a review if this episode helped you.

Have a great day, everyone. Don’t forget to smile today. Tell your loved ones how much they mean to you. I’m Josh Parnell, reminding you to keep leading well.

    E6: Effective Delegation

    E6: Effective Delegation

(2:25) Why don’t we delegate? There are a number of reasons, beginning with trust.

(4:20) We hire “C.I.A. members. They proved themself in the interview process, and they’re measured on performance thereafter.

(13:59) The 50% rule. If someone can do it half as well as you can, delegate it!

    (15:27) MJ > LeBron

Here are the 5 bullet points to effective delegation.

(20:44) Know the difference between delegating and dumping.

Don’t “dump” something on somebody just because you don’t want to do it. Know your audience. Recognize the responsibility and the person you’re operating with so you know what they can handle and what they can’t. Situational leadership is adapting to the needs of a situation and the needs and the abilities of those you’re leading.

(22:58) You’re not giving them tasks. You're giving them responsibility.

This is empowerment. Let them 'champion' something. The 2 most important things that every person needs and deserves in a professional relationship is clarity and direction. Set very clear expectations on what you’re asking for, and allow that person the opportunity to get it done.

    (23:36) Results oriented delegation.

When we're working to achieve our own results and goals, OUR focus should be on the steps we take to get there. When we DELEGATE, it's the complete opposite. Stay focused on the results.

    (26:13) Prioritize communication.

When there's a breakdown in communication, a void gets created, and oftentimes negativity fills that void. Here’s why delegation should be paired with accountability meetings. Meet to assess the situation, ask questions, and provide guidance and support when necessary.

(27:36) Coaching opportunity… but it’s for them first!

When coaching someone we've delegated a task to, we should ask them to coach themselves first before we share feedback regarding opportunity areas.

Have a great day, everyone. Don’t forget to smile today. Tell your loved ones how much they mean to you. I’m Josh Parnell, reminding you to keep leading well.
