SLAM - The Key Technology for Autonomous Vehicles in Logistics (Prof. Cyrill Stachniss, University of Bonn)

SLAM - The Key Technology for Autonomous Vehicles in Logistics (Prof. Cyrill Stachniss, University of Bonn)
In today's episode we will take a deep dive into the topic of Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM). SLAM is a method used for autonomous vehicles such as AMRs in logistics for example that lets you build a map and localize your vehicles in that map at the same time. SLAM algorithms allow vehicles to map out unknown environments. It’s one of those things we should all know about in more detail in order to understand how autonomous vehicles in logistics are able to do what they do. Today's guest is a leading expert in the field of SLAM. Cyrill Stachniss is a full professor at the University of Bonn and heads the Photogrammetry and Robotics Lab. In his research, he focuses on probabilistic techniques for mobile robotics, perception, and navigation. The main application areas of his research are autonomous service robots, agricultural robotics, and self-driving cars. He has co-authored over 250 publications, has won several best paper awards, and has coordinated multiple large research projects on the national and European level. This podcast is hosted by Marco Prüglmeier. Together Marco and Cyrill cover the following topics: - A definition and explanation of SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) - Where is SLAM being used - How the SLAM algorithm actually evolved over time and what Carl Friedrich Gauss has to do with it - The different categories of SLAM systems, how they work and what use cases they are best suited for - How SLAM systems are deployed in the world of logistics - Advantages of SLAM for robots in logistics - What problems and issues to look out for when implementing SLAM in logistics and warehouse situations with highly repetitive or highly dynamic environments - What the latest fields of research to advance SLAM technology are Helpful links: Webinar with JYSK and GreyOrange: https://bvl-digital.de/webinare/sendeplan/how-flexible-automation-helped-jysk-cope-with-the-unexpected-peaks-during-the-pandemic-and-support-their-ecommerce-growth/ YouTube Video on SLAM with Cyrill: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87S82fh4rI4 Another YouTube Video on SLAM with Cyrill: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BuRCJ2fegcc To connect with Cyrill on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/cyrill-stachniss-736233173/

Can we ship containers on autonomous, hydrofoiling speed boats yet? (Max Olson, CEO/Founder, Seachange)

Can we ship containers on autonomous, hydrofoiling speed boats yet? (Max Olson, CEO/Founder, Seachange)
This is the story of a brilliant mechanical engineer in his 20s named Max Olson who had a crazy idea of how to revolutionize container transportation on the ocean. Contrary to what everybody else in the industry is doing - building larger and larger container vessels for economies of scale - Max set out to design small, hydrofoiling, remote-controlled speed boats that could carry 3 standard size ocean containers from China to the US West coast in less than 5 days. Instead of the normal 15 days of transit time. How Max came up with this crazy idea, how the prototypes look like, and if his idea has any chance of becoming a viable business any time soon, all of that and more is covered in this episode of The Logistics Tribe. What is MQTT?? And why will it be relevant in every logistics operation soon? (Dominik Obermaier, Founder/CTO, HiveMQ)

What is MQTT?? And why will it be relevant in every logistics operation soon? (Dominik Obermaier, Founder/CTO, HiveMQ)
Today's episode of The Logistics Tribe is dedicated to the topic of MQTT. MQTT is a messaging protocol for the Internet of Things (IoT). If you work in logistics and supply chain management, you really need to get up to speed on this very important technology that is such a key enabler for connecting devices, vehicles, assets, sensors, etc. Our guest Dominik Obermaier is a key expert in this field. He is CTO and co-founder at HiveMQ and also the co-author of the book “The Technical Foundations of IoT”. Together with our host Marco Prüglmeier, Dominik discusses the following topics: - The history of the MQTT protocol, dating back to 1999 - How and why MQTT has really gained recognition and traction in the last 10 years - The analogies between http is for the internet of humans and MQTT for the internet of things - Why MQTT is conquering the world of logistics already, without people even realizing it - The challenges of connectivity that MQTT can address - How MQTT makes data transfer as efficient as possible through so called publish/subscribe architecture - How and why Dominik got interested in MQTT and how he built a company around it - Why everybody driving a modern car is already using MQTT today - MQTT as a key component of Industry 4.0, connected factories and connected cities - MQTT in logistics: connecting devices, vehicles, assets, sensors, etc. - How does the implementation of MQTT technology work and why it can be set up so quickly - Some predictions for the future of the internet of things and for MQTT - And much more Please subscribe to The Logistics Tribe Podcast, so you don't miss any of the future episodes. Contrarian Views on Startups, Digital Freight Forwarders, LogTech, AI and more (Jonah McIntire, Founder, TNX Logistics)

Contrarian Views on Startups, Digital Freight Forwarders, LogTech, AI and more (Jonah McIntire, Founder, TNX Logistics)
Jonah McIntire is the founder of TNX Logistics, an AI-based road transportation procurement platform that Jonah just sold to Transporeon. He is also author of the book "Supply Chain Visibility: From Theory to Practice". Jonah holds many contrarian views around logistics and supply chain tech in particular. So this conversation turned into a wide-ranging thought-provoking discussion with our host Boris Felgendreher on the following topics: - Why startups are much less about a grand vision and more about trial-and-error and opportunism - What the first version of TNX Logistics looked liked like and why that didn’t work - What actually did work and how - What the “whiteboard rationale” was for launching TNX in New Zealand in “stealth mode” and what the reality ended up looking like - The acquisition of TNX by Transporeon - Jonah’s views on the success of Sennder in the European road transportation market. What he admires the company for and what he perceives as “tech-washing” on behalf of Sennder, Uber Freight, Convoy and others - An analysis of the economic models of Uber Freight, Convoy, Flexport - The valuation premium of digital freight forwarders vs. traditional freight forwarders - Why Jonah is bearish on drones in logistics but very bullish on autonomous vehicles and why that technology deserves more attention - Why the vision of humans and AI working together in unison and AI only replacing the boring and mindless tasks that humans don’t like to do may be wrong - Is AI in logistics and supply chain actually making jobs better or not? - How to think about breakthrough technologies that will suddenly change an entire industry. Analogies to the Manhattan project - And much more Please subscribe to The Logistics Tribe Podcast, so you don't miss any of the future episodes. What have you changed your mind on recently, Erik Wirsing? (Global Head of Innovation at DB Schenker)

What have you changed your mind on recently, Erik Wirsing? (Global Head of Innovation at DB Schenker)
Erik Wirsing is leading Global Innovations at DB Schenker, one of the largest logistics providers in the world, with over 75.000 people and over 17 billion Euros in annual revenue. In that role, it's vitally important to keep a close eye on the trends, technologies and innovations that are changing the industry. And as change is happening faster and faster it's more important than ever to frequently adjust your point of view on the innovations and technologies that really matter So our host Boris Felgendreher sat down with Erik to find out what Eric has actually changed his mind on recently. The result is a wide-ranging conversation about the following topics: - Managing teams, partners and relationships remotely. Connecting with people emotionally via digital tools. Fresh views on home office and remote work during and after the pandemic - Additive manufacturing and 3D printing. Example: 3D-printed face masks. Can logistics providers benefit from a world were items and spare parts can be produced locally as opposed to transported. - New business models for logistics providers. - Cargo drones and Volocopter, a company DB Schenker invested in - The tolerance and appetite for trying new, unproven things that may not work inside a large "conservative" organization - Examples of great ideas on paper that failed to work in practice and what lessons were learned - Autonomous driving: A topic the Schenker organization changed its mind on in just the last few weeks. Why and how? - The prospects of Hyperloop technology - The speed of electrification of heavy-load truck transport - The sudden rise and popularity of cargo bikes for inner-city transport - Space logistics and satellite technology - and more Please subscribe to The Logistics Tribe Podcast, so you don't miss any of the future episodes.
