Season 2 Day 8: Chocolate Boobs

Season 2 Day 8: Chocolate Boobs

The last week of Breastfeeding Month is “Black breastfeeding week”. And why does it deserve it’s own week? Because for so long we have been excluded from the “everybody” months, days, and weeks. So it’s okay that we, yes we because I’m a Black woman, have a week to get correct information out there and celebrate in a space for us. Also because we have our own issues that prevent us from initiating and continuing to breastfeed past 6 months. In this episode I bring to light the barriers we have and how to help remove them.

Season 2 Day 7: Stop Lying on My Boobs

Season 2 Day 7: Stop Lying on My Boobs

On this episode, we are going to talk about all the ridiculous lies…well let me say fibs or stories because I’m from the South and lie is a bigger cuss word that shit and damn…you’ve been told about breastfeeding. Trust me, I’ve heard them ALL. Now I must warn, some of the language may be triggering so make sure you’re in a safe place. I don’t want to minimize any words that may trigger memories or events that were traumatizing.

    Season 2 Day 5: Momma...Embrace the Break

    Season 2 Day 5: Momma...Embrace the Break

You're stuck in a break...and place of stillness and you think that something is wrong. Or you're being punished. It's the opposite Sis, God or whomever you see as your high being, is preparing you for something greater. Something so big, that they know you need a break to prepare for it.

Season 2 Day 4: If it's up then it's stuck

Season 2 Day 4: If it's up then it's stuck

Well May 22nd is World Pre-Eclampsia Day. I’m going to be honest; I’m always tickled at the celebrated days that pop up. Like there is a day to recognize and celebrate everything. I love it in one way but in another I am like “Dang, do I need a gift for that?!??” LOL But if giving it a day makes it more recognized and saves lives, then I’m for it.

So in comes “World Pre Eclampsia Day”. So I’ve done an entire episode on hypertensive disorders that can effect and present themselves in pregnancy. If you having listened, jump back to episode Day 21. Today we will do a quick talk on Pre-Eclampsia. Now I say quick but you know these conversations are just that, live conversations of me talking to myself while talking to you. So it could be really quick or a bunch of rambling with important information mixed in LOL.

Season 2 Day 3: The Truth about Fertile Myrtle

Season 2 Day 3: The Truth about Fertile Myrtle

It’s National Infertility Awareness Week and boy do I have a treat for you. Yesterday I had the honor of chatting with a Momma that has devoted her life to helping yall become Mommas when you need a little extra help. I learned so much from this Queen and I’m still massaging my hands because I couldn’t keep up with the knowledge she was dropping.

Dr. Torie Comeaux Plowden is an Obstetrician Gynecologist like me but she also decided to do an extra 4 years to learn all the things dealing with fertility. She’s one of the gurus I send my patients to when my tricks to get pregnant just aren’t working.

In this hour plus, yes…we were yapping that long…we tackle normal fertility physiology, how to recognize when something isn’t normal, we dive into the questions you should be asking yourself concerning child bearing…we talk about the myths of fertility especially in Black culture, we talk about the different options out there to achieve motherhood…and even after an hour and a half, we only scratched the surface so you know she’s coming back. LOL

So grab your notebooks, pens, girlfriends, significant others, and let’s talk fertility with Dr. Torie.

What was a thought has now become her reality and she's loving every minute. Dr. Carmen is a Board Certified Obstetrician Gynecologist that is doing big things down under. She's also a mom to a beautiful little boy with an accent to die for.

Tune in today and listen to two girlfriends cackle about life and grab some gems while you're at it.

    Season 2 Day 1: Baby Got Vacc'ed

    Season 2 Day 1: Baby Got Vacc'ed

Let me first say that I’m #TeamVaccinations. I believe in the science behind them and I’ve been able to live freely in the world because of them. There are diseases that I only know about because I had to study them in school. This is 100% because of science and vaccinations. As yall know, I always tell you to read the facts and make your own decisions. The only thing I can provide is facts and you make your decisions from there.

This episode hopefully will answer some of your questions about the Covid vaccination and help you make a decision that is best for you and your unborn babe.

Your girl has been out here doing the most but I'm back. I've missed you and promise not to leave again. This is just a little snippet into what I've been up to. Also some rambling as you know I'm good for that.

Day 22: The Dreaded Conversation: Your Babies, Puberty, and Sex

Day 22: The Dreaded Conversation: Your Babies, Puberty, and Sex

Dr. Fatu Forna is one of my favorite humans in the entire world. She's an OB/GYN that has a passion for helping Mommas navigate the world of puberty and sex with our babies. Many of us probably never even had the conversation with our parents and now we are responsible for having this conversation with our kiddies. As an OB, I can tell you that ignoring the topic doesn't make the curiosity go away. I babies will find a way to get information and many times it's the wrong information that lands them in my office for OB appointments way too early. And lets not talk about the misinformation that keeps them from coming to my office for abnormal menses and vaginal issues. Let's be honest Mommas, we might not want to have this conversation, but we have to have this conversation. Our babies are depending on us.

Dr. Fatu is here to help give us the words and wisdom to make this conversation as painless as possible. I learned so much talking to her and I hope you learn the same.

Day 21: It's Pre Eclampsia Season

Remember, this podcast is to keep you informed so you participate in your prenatal period. If you have any of these symptoms, you need to be evaluated. If your concerns are being ignored, you need to escalate until your voice and concerns are being properly addressed.

Day 20: Black Mommas are weathering the storm

Day 20: Black Mommas are weathering the storm

This is an episode straight from the heart. No script. Just a Black Momma pleading for someone to hear me and my sisters to help us get healthy enough to birth our next generation.

Weathering as a phenomenon that has been found in Black women and is one of the reasons we see an increase in fetal and neonatal mortality and morbidity It has been found that in Black women, the younger we are the healthier our children are born and the older we are, the more complications our unborn children deal with. In comparison to other races, it's the opposite.

Why? Because the older we get, the more stress we build in our bodies. This stress causes chronic disease and complications in future pregnancies. By the time we get to late 20s, our mind, body, and spirit are broken. No matter that we are more financially stable, our wombs are stressed.

This episode is a talk from my heart on how others can help decrease the stress Black women face everyday which will help us birth healthier babies to help lead the next generation.

Day 19: Momma Peace At Work

Day 19: Momma Peace At Work

In this episode I give five reasons on why work peace as a mother is important and how to achieve it. Work doesn't have to stress you out or make you feel guilty for being a mother. Work should add to your life, not drain you. Plus, you have to have joy to give back to your family once you're home.

Tune in today so you can soak in what you need to make work life and Momma life work for you.

    Day 16 Black Mommas Matter

    Day 16 Black Mommas Matter

The secret is out. Not only is the Maternal Mortality rate in the US is at an all time height, it effects Black Women 4-5 times more than other races. Yes you heard me, Black women are dying at a rate of 4-5 time more than other women. And no, lets not be quick to blame educational barriers or socio-economical barriers. Nope. White women with a high school education still have a higher chance of surviving pregnancy, labor, delivery and postpartum (1 year after delivery) than Black women that have a college degree. And no, these studies aren’t saying that White women with less education deserve less education, it’s say that ALL WOMEN deserve the same level of care. There ARE guidelines in place but because of implicit bias, racism, and access to care, we as Black women are receiving different levels of care.

Day 15 COVID and Pregnancy: Update-Alone and Scared

Day 15 COVID and Pregnancy: Update-Alone and Scared

So the biggest issue now is Mommas having to labor and deliver alone. Never did I think we would be in a time where Mommas would have to labor alone. Like I know back in the day it was the norm but today in 2020 it is not and should not. So many people are asking me how I feel about it and I’ll tell you that I’m not happy. It makes me so sad that women are now delivering their children without a familiar support system. Yall know how big I am on advocates and it’s no doubt in my mind that advocates keep mother’s safe and heard.

On this episode, I give some tips to deal with this huge curve ball that has been thrown your way. I know this is not what you expected but we have to make the best out of it and keep everyone safe. You know I had to pop in with some knowledge that you could implement because as you know, knowledge has no power without implementation.

So hit play and absorb information will keep you safe if you are one of the Mommas that will have to labor alone.

    Day 14 Pregnancy and Obesity

    Day 14 Pregnancy and Obesity

Obesity is a touchy subject that many physicians don’t like to bring up. Especially with pregnant women. It’s a fine line of trying to educate and offending. I know some patients view even addressing obesity as body shaming so it’s really trying to make sure the patient understands that we are coming from a place of love (Because yall know I love yall) and help. Obesity in pregnancy automatically puts you at a high risk for complications in pregnancy. Because of these higher risks, I make sure to educate my patients on how to decrease their BMI before pregnancy and how to safely navigate a healthy diet and activity routine while pregnant. I want you to not be embarrassed by the number or diagnoses of obesity. I want you to be aware of the diagnoses and how you should be monitored during your pregnancy. It’s not something you should run away from and it shouldn’t be ignored by you or your obstetrical provider. You should both be on the same page so you and your child will make it through safely and alive. I want you to be well versed on this so when you recognize something it’s right, you can speak up.
