The No Dishes Podcast

"Hoosiers" and "Rudy". Two timeless sports movies, both highlight Indiana cities. And both written by Bloomington local, Angelo Pizzo, and directed by David Anspaugh, his fraternity brother at Indiana University. We are very grateful to have Angelo join us on our final episode of Season 5 and to share his very illuminating insights of the inner workings of each of these Hollywood classics. He also shares his thoughts on the Bloomington food scene, IU basketball, IU football, and fills us in on his newer works, including The Hill, starring Dennis Quaid and now streaming on Netflix.

After a career as a traveling pro wrestler based out of the Region, Lee Rosser found himself washing dishes in Broad Ripple, working his way up to a Sous/Operations Director role at the same spot, then eventually moving to Bloomington and opening Chef Lee in Your Home. After years of exclusively doing on-site catering, Chef Lee opened up his brick and mortar on South Walnut where he hosts monthly pop-up dinners with eclectic themes. Big personality. Big flavors. Chef Lee offers more than just a delicious meal. It's a whole experience. One that Bloomington is lucky to have!

You scream, I scream, we all scream, for ice cream! After working at Jiffy Treat since she was 14, Laura LeJeune, and her sister Danelle, purchased the Ellettsville and Bedford locations in 2019. We nerded out talking all things ice cream, from butterfat percentage, to trying to uphold such longstanding, beloved brands. Laura's passion for ice cream, and love for her staff, are very apparent from the first few minutes we sat down together. As she so eloquently said about The Chocolate Moose & Jiffy Treat, "we don't compete, we complete".

I found it incredibly fascinating to hear how they've both managed to achieve great success while taking very different approaches. After meeting in class on their first day of culinary school, Clard and Tiffany are a dream team cooking duo. Jordan & Pippen. Clard with the mouth watering specials and homemade soups. Tiffany with delectable, daily rotating desserts and unmatched baking skills. Clard did make sure to clarify though that he's Pippen, and Tiffany is Jordan. Hope also shares her work with Hoosiers Outrun Cancer/Cancer Support Community South Central Indiana and why it's so personal for her. From clocking in at 5 am, to feeding the athletes from all 24 teams, Hope never stops and has a truly inspirational story we can all learn from.

After discovering his unique talent after eating Australia's biggest burger on a weekend trip with his wife, James left his corporate job and has since been traveling the world, conquering eating challenges and building a social media following of over 1.5 million in the process. From not quite understanding what he was getting into at the St. Elmo's shrimp cocktail eating contest, to finishing third in back to back Nathan's 4th of July Hot Dog contest, James has no shortage of stories from his incredible journey.

Celebrating their 40th anniversary this year, Butler Winery has played a huge part in not only our incredible, local wine offerings in Bloomington, but also selling home brewing supplies to the founders of a lot of the local breweries in town. Andrew also shares his stories from his time as part owner of the beloved, and greatly missed, House Bar and the Rail.

It's August of 1996 and Sue Aquila is opening Bloomington Bagel Company for their first day of business. The first customer walks in and asks for their bagel toasted. Sue had spent all $150k she had, and there was no money left over for a toaster. While the guest didn't end up getting their toasted bagel, she did meet her future wife, Sue.

This is just one of the many stories Sue Aquila, Owner of Bloomington Bagel Company, and Dawn Keough, Chief Operations Officer, shared in our time together. I had so much fun chatting about the similarities between the Moose and BBC, Sue's hatred of April Fools, her time apprenticing in Buffalo, NY with the Bagel Bakers Union, and Dawn's surprising gig at the Indianapolis Zoo. Two super fun, and super talented, individuals that Bloomington is lucky to have!
