    The Social Stylist Podcast

The Social Stylist Podcast is THE place to be for beauty entrepreneurs looking to grow and scale their brands on social media! Lindsey grew her beauty business to multiple six figures during her 12 years behind the chair. During those 12 years, she learned how to navigate the beauty business as an introvert and master that in-person connection. But after becoming a mom, she knew she needed to pivot to focus on her other great love - marketing. She was surrounded by some of the most talented hair stylists in the business. But all of their marketing looked the same. So she dug in and mastered her marketing by finding a fresh approach that felt authentic. Now, she is a social media manager and strategist for beauty entrepreneurs and she's providing a peak behind the curtain in this one-of-a-kind podcast. With each episode, she'll be sharing actionable steps you need to take to claim your confidence in the online space. Exclusive guest interviews with some of the people Lindsey respects the most will transform the way you think about entrepreneurship. You can also expect to hear about all the messy, uncomfortable lessons she has learned along the way!

Why I Quit the 90 Day Challenge Early: Redefining Consistency on Social Media

Why I Quit the 90 Day Challenge Early: Redefining Consistency on Social Media

What happened to the infamous 90-day challenge, courtesy of the incredible Lacey Gebo? I quit early and i'm giving you the total rundown on why in today's episode. My definition of consistency doesn't look the same as a lot of social media managers out there.

We're constantly hearing about how important it is to post with a high frequency. But what happens when the quality of those posts goes down dramatically? Our audience notices. My engagement was actually going down during the challenge and I had to take a step back to re-evaluate.

I'm sharing this because I want you to see how you might be sabotaging your engagement by mirroring the people around you. Other people in your industry might be posting a ton of education and seeing great results. Does that mean that you should too? Not necessarily.

In this episode, I'm chatting about:

    • My experience with the 90 day challenge
    • Why I decided to quit the challenge early
    • How my strategy pivoted after seeing low engagement
    • Forming your own definition of consistency

    Social Media is DEAD!?

    Social Media is DEAD!?

I got a DM the other day that had me scratching my head, and I thought, "Let's unpack this together." So, imagine this: leaving behind a booming salon, a bustling team, and all the hair things to start a social media business . And someone says, "Why leave the comfort zone for an industry that's supposedly on life support?" Hold up, what? Social media is dead? Cue my jaw-drop moment.

So, let's play detective. If you tell me social media is dead, i'm hearing "it's not working for ME" and I want to know why. The first step in moving past this limiting belief is an audit of your current page. What isn't serving you anymore? A big one I see often: using captions as short as a coffee order without any depth. It worked two years ago, but not today! Social media's evolved, but it's not dead.

People crave feels and stories since 2020 hit. Influencers spill the tea on products, sure, but they make you feel why it matters. As beauty pros, we've got the golden ticket to showcase transformations and the vibes behind 'em. Get your audience to feel something, and voila!

But wait, there's more. Tune in to hear the three key points I would audit in your socials if you think social media is dead.

    In this episode, I cover:

    • Why hair shots are simply not doing the trick anymore
    • Social media isn't your entire marketing strategy!
    • Are you drowning your audience in educational posts?

Changing the Industry Standard: A Candid Conversation with the ‘UNmotivational’ educator, Krista Storm

Changing the Industry Standard: A Candid Conversation with the ‘UNmotivational’ educator, Krista Storm

As a new stylist, someone may have told you it was possible to make 100,000 behind the chair. But did you actually know what that would take? For today's guest, Krista Storm, she had to find out for herself.

Krista became a hair stylist in 2007 and that was exactly what she was told. But she wasn't given any of the actual information about the amount of effort or time that would take. After eight years spent barely breaking 30,000, she finally found her own techniques and systems that made room for her to thrive. Now, she's a salon owner and educator changing the game for stylists with the mission to constantly evolve.

I loved this conversation with Krista today. She hits the nail on the head when she describes herself as the  ‘UNmotivational’ educator. We're not getting fluff. We're not being made to feel bad about the burn out we've experienced. She's real about what it takes to make it in this business and it's such a treat.

    In this episode, we discuss:

    • embracing your natural essence online
    • showing up by starting small
    • the inevitability of burn out and what you can do when it happens
    • why following trends isn't getting you closer to your next dream client

    14. Rewriting Our Money Stories Outside of the Salon with Misty Jayne, Life and Money Coach for Hairstylists

Do you ever feel like no matter how much money you have coming through working behind the chair, you simply can’t hold on to it? It’s immediately going to bills, debt, groceries, and suddenly you’re at a loss. Well, I’ve got a treat for you today!

I had the pleasure of sitting down with my friend Misty Jayne, a life and money coach for hairstylists. As a stylist, she saw the need for financial literacy in her own life and her peers. She discusses her personal struggles with debt and burnout. Getting herself out of debt revealed a hidden passion - sharing her insights and helping stylists reach financial freedom.

A ton of advice you see online is all about how to make more. But this advice neglects to tell us how to manage the money we come by. Misty also shares what it was like showing up in a new way once she decided she wanted to pivot in her career.

It can be really intimidating at the beginning of any endeavor to start showing up publicly in a different way. We talk all about how to navigate shifts in our career with a bold approach.

    In this episode, we discuss:

    • How financial literacy changed Misty’s life
    • The first time Misty showed up as a money expert and how that changed her life
    • Overcoming the fear of judgment on social media

    13. “F*ck Your Fear”: Real Talk with Sarai, the Platinum Giraffe

    13. “F*ck Your Fear”: Real Talk with Sarai, the Platinum Giraffe

Welcome back to the second season of The Social Stylist Podcast! If you’ve ever asked the question “what’s an ‘appropriate’ way for me to show up?” this episode is for you. Today’s guest is going to break you out of that box you’ve put yourself in and say “fuck your fear.” Can you guess who i’m talking about?

We’re back with a bang with a very special guest: Sirai, AKA “The Platinum Giraffe.” Sirai has been making waves in the hair industry by leading with unapologetic authenticity and no f*cking fear. Her community, The Balanced Stylist Society, is taking hair education beyond technique and into self-care and embodiment.

Sirai has an incredible capacity for staying open and bringing her darkest moment to light. She makes a lovely distinction that I want to pull out for you here: “Vulnerability is sharing what you're currently going through.Transparency is sharing what you've been through.” So she shares what it was like to tell her audience her current struggles with an eating disorder and how that felt entirely different than sharing past struggles.

I’m so excited for you to tune in because I really you’re going to feel lighter and more audacious by the end of this episode!

    In this episode, we cover:

    • The importance of holding space for mental health while running a business
    • Taking messy and imperfect action to build genuine connections
    • The value of sharing personal struggles and stories with your audience.
    • Balancing social media consumption and creating intentional content.

    9. Leading by Example to Take Your Teams Socials to the Top with Lacey Gebo

If you have a team - it’s time to start leading by example when it comes to social media. Today, my guest and good friend Lacey Gebo joins us to give the low-down on exactly how her team went from stuck to soaring on socials. Lacey is the owner of Salon Lace and LG Education. When it comes to assistants in the beauty industry, Lacey is your girl! She’s instilling incredible habits with the assistants at LG Education by having them commit to taking the lead on socials from the get-go.

It wasn’t always intuitive for Lacey though. She used to simply tell her team to post more without taking her own advice and no one was moving forward. Now, social media is a non-negotiable for Lacey and her team. When Lacey started posting, her team followed suit. Because of that commitment, most of their clients actually come from Instagram now! She even filled me in on a super fun, NINETY DAY CHALLENGE she’s doing with her team. I was so inspired by the dedication that I decided to join as well.

You can find more details about the social media challenge below but tune in to see whether it's right for you!

    4. Why in the World Would I Want to Become Meta Verified?

    4. Why in the World Would I Want to Become Meta Verified?

On Instagram, the little blue check mark has always been seen as a symbol of status. Until now. A new program called Meta Verified was recently rolled out and it’s causing big shifts in the online community. Now, for $14.99 per month, anyone can have the blue check mark next to their name. What does that mean for stylists? Should you invest in Meta Verified? I’m going through all of the pros and cons along with misconceptions surrounding this roll out in this weeks episode.

First, we’re covering the list of perks Instagram is claiming come with Meta Verified. I’m touching on the topic of engagement and how having a blue check mark might actually work against smaller creators in the long run on that front. But I explain why I think Meta Verified might be really beneficial for huge accounts that are often subject to fake copy cats. At the end of the daya, the decision to invest in Meta Verified will be largely dependent on your goals. If you’re a small business looking to gain the trust of your local community, i’m hoping options like two-step authorization will still be an option in the future. But if you’re a large creator hoping to stave off spam accounts, Meta Verified might be exactly what you need. Listen to learn what my approach to the Meta Verified madness will be.

    In this Episode, I Cover:

    • Will MetaVerified increase your engagement?
    • The actual benefits of MetaVerified
    • What will happen to two-step verification?
    • Why I think a blue check mark might work against you
    • My predictions for what might happen with MetaVerified in the future

    3. How to Create a Life and Business that Aligns with your Values with Tara Kirby

    3. How to Create a Life and Business that Aligns with your Values with Tara Kirby

Tara Kirby is a serial entrepreneur. She went from owning a clothing boutique to a photography studio and she even worked behind the chair as a hairstylist/esthetician for 11 years. Tara knows the power of a pivot and that is why she was the first coach I ever hired when I began to walk a different path. In the episode, she walks us through the hard questions we need to ask ourselves to make sure we’re moving with integrity and getting unstuck.

She teaches the four elements to alignment - your mind, body, soul, and season of life. When we fake alignment and keep moving in a direction we’re fundamentally unhappy with, it can lead to all sorts of strain and discomfort amongst each element. Alignment is specific to each and every person and it comes from the inside out. Tara speaks about convinced alignment that comes when we reach for shiny objects to fix our problems before doing the inner work to re-align. After listening to this episode, you will have a better understanding of how you can get reconnected to your body and ask yourself the real questions.

    In This Episode, We Cover:

    • The many shifts Tara has been flowing through with entrepreneurship
    • Why mirroring what everyone else was doing didn’t work for Tara and probably won’t work for you
    • She asks the question - how many of us really take the time to figure out who we are?
    • Realizing you have the power to choose who sits in your chair
    • The moment I realized I wasn’t happy in my life and business and how Tara helped me move through that
    • The Four Elements to Alignment
    • How having non-aligned energy could affect your reality on social media
    • A quick mindfulness exercise
    • Taras priorities at this moment in her life and how that effects the boundaries in her business
    • How being an entrepreneur requires you to confront your limiting beliefs

    2. How to Stay Consistent on Social Media and Honor this Season of your Life

    2. How to Stay Consistent on Social Media and Honor this Season of your Life

The funny thing about consistency on social media is that consistency looks different in every season of my life. If you follow me on social media, you know I love a conversation about consistency. Contrary to popular belief, you do not have to post and do EVERYTHING every single day to be successful on social media. You just have to make an effort to just show up every single day. This episode is dedicated to all of the mothers out there that have a different way of showing up with each new stage in your child's life.

I’m sharing my current favorite way to show up every day - Instagram stories. There are endless possibilities when it comes to stories. You don’t need to overthink it, you just need to show your face so your potential clients start to get a feel for your personality. You can show up with tangly hair and PJs on and no one will think twice.

In This Episode, I Also Cover:

    • Why the traditional advice to post everyday, multiple times a day doesn’t work for me right now
    • How to show up on social media when our kids are going through rocky transitions
    • Ideas for what to post on your story
    • The importance of being genuine when you engage

    1. Part 1: Behind the Chair to Behind the Screen

    1. Part 1: Behind the Chair to Behind the Screen

Do you feel like you’re finding your way through entrepreneurship alone? Today, i’m sharing part 1 of my story. From high school to my time behind the chair to the beginnings of my marketing journey. I’ve always had a subconscious knowing that I was supposed to be in marketing in some capacity. But my journey there was unconventional and I found different passions along the way. As a shy highschooler, I found my way into a cosmetology program! And a teacher changed my life when she looked at me and said “Lindsey, you’re going to need to learn how to talk to people or you’re not going to be successful in this industry.”

    Welcome to The Social Stylist!

    Welcome to The Social Stylist!
