    Matt Jones on Baofeng UV-5R

…a cheap Chinese 2m/70cms FM transceiver. It's not a particularly good one, actually it's pretty poor in the grand scale of Radios, but it's not absolute garbage, and it does work as it's designed to. The thing that makes it iconic is the price. Where a Radio Amateur might have paid £300-£1000 for an equivalent product from a reputable manufacturer (Icon, Yeasu, Kenwood etc), I paid around £7 for this one from China (or £26 in the UK)! Which is astonishing when you consider this includes the Radio, Antenna, a Removable Li-ion Battery, two headsets, case, cradle dock and a charger.

The reason these are popular with a lot of folks is that they can be easily programmed to use the Licence Free PMR446 frequencies, (although technically it's not legal to do so) so they are popular with off-roaders, paintballers, security companies etc.

It’s a hell of alot of tech of £7 - and even works as a rechargeable torch!

…therein followed a long thread in our MeWe Group as listeners compared their memories and various pieces of Ham Radio kit!

In the latest pod, you chatted about installing solar cells over parking lots in France.

Here in South Africa it is becoming the norm.

Below is a picture taken at a large national chain.

Part of the reason for the installation is the sometimes unreliable power supply.

    Player Piano or Pianola

We had a friend up the road in the 1960’s when I was a kid who had one of these and I loved to just sit and pump those pedals!

A time when so many people, including us, had a cheap second-hand upright piano in the house.

The idea - great pianists played their tunes which were ‘recorded’ onto paper rolls and those who made the Piano Rolls of paper with holes in them, sold them to Joe Public and anyone with the Pianola could then slot the roll into their piano (with an opening hatch at the front so you could see turning it if you wanted to) replicate perfectly the performance as it was originally played.

Some performers cheated with this and conned the listeners of course!

I remember playing with the speed - so if you pedalled slower, it slowed down and the tones became deeper - speed up and vice-versa.

    As a 5 year-old boy, I was fascinated!

How did they work? I shall try and uncover it before we record - take a principle like a music box cylinder perhaps and apply it to holes instead of twang-prongs?! Will look into it…

Being an 80's throwback, I do enjoy your Harkbark feature.

Strangely, I don't recall the Codemasters games, but I do remember a brand called Mastertronic, who sold mostly garbage, but occasionally really good games for £1.99.

The interesting thing was that these were sold not in Computer shops, but in Newsagents and Petrol Stations, making them accessible and affordable for kids.

    They were terrific value.

    Steve Heinrich on FreeYourMusic (follow-up)

Ted, you are correct about the music service transfer being just hooks between services. Essentially I think it pulls your playlists, songs etc. and adds them to your library on the new service using the new service's version of the songs (no MP3 stuff, just streaming in this case). It's basically matching songs across services and putting your playlists in the order you had them etc.

Steve Heinrich on FreeYourMusic - Pricing

Looking to switch (subscription) music streaming services? Make transferring your playlists and songs easier with FreeYourMusic. All works inside THEIR cloud, so no up/downloading by the user. A way to move their collection of playlists and songs from one music service to another. This saves a lot of time for those with a ton of songs collected in one service. I would say it's probably worth the premium cost considering the time saved and amount of music services offered. The premium plan also offers some nice syncing and backup features for those who move services often. Personally, I would just pay once to transfer somewhere else then cancel.

There’s also the (apparently) free Tune My Music according to Daniel Da Rocha
