    Matt Jones

More happy Nexus memories for me on the last show. I couldn’t get hold of a Nexus One, so settled for the Desire, which I still think is one of the best looking Android phones we’ve seen. I did jump on the Nexus train with the Nexus S though, which I picked up on impulse from CEX Great Yarmouth while on holiday! I loved that curved screen. As Gareth pointed out, the OEM’s UI’s were horribly intrusive and slowed the devices down, so the pure Android experience meant significantly more then, than it does now. Most phones I bought were rooted and running Cyanogenmod within a few weeks.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 on Phones Show Chat

Ian Barton on Cocopar 15.6" Display

This isn't cheap at £189.99, but if you want a standalone display with decent specs it fits the bill. It is compatible with most devices. I have tested it on my Poco phone, a FireTV stick and my Chromebook. The display is 1080p, 15.6 inches and a 16:9 aspect ratio. If your device can output enough power you can power it via usb-C. However, a mains adapter is also provided. There are two USB-C ports and a mini-HDMI port. Also included are a USB-C, USB-C to USB-A adaptor and a USB-C to mini-HDMI cable. For the dinosaurs, there is a 3.5mm jack Also, there is a decent cover that doubles as a stand. Side by side with my Chromebook the display is comparable. You can use the settings menu to adjust most screen settings. Brightness is good for indoor usage, although not quite as good as the Chromebook. I can see it is going to be very useful to take on holiday where I can pair it to my phone or FireTV stick and avoid the annoyance of trying to get your devices to display on the TV in your room.

    Comparing Different AA Batteries

Is there anything better than Alkalines? Short answer is no. They compare loads of cheap-brand Alkaline AAs against Cheap Carbon Zinc ones and the Alkalines win out every time, seemingly regardless of price, by 3 or 4 times. Yet, main brands like Panasonic continue to make Carbon Zinc, claiming they are ‘good enough for low-power units like remotes’.

I flogged the MX Master 3! I’m really much, much happier with the Anywhere 2S (as per your last show Bargain Basement). It’s a much, much better size for me - and I still get the super-speed scroll function. And back/right clicks on the wheel (that you don’t get with the Master 3). So there! 😛

Feedback on power stations from the last Tech Addicts show. I'm afraid you were a couple of orders of magnitude out. As a rule, a medium power station like my Jackery 500 (so 500Wh, around 100,000mAh) can't really help much with a home's electricity for any time whatsoever. It'll run some tech (router, laptops) for an hour or two (plus tablets and phones).

That's your lot. A massive £3000 power station like the one on your show or the new Jackery 2000 can output 2kW, it's true, but only for an hour(!) - so will actually allow limited use of kettle, one fan heater, and so on, OR perhaps a house's lights, fridges and freezers for a day. Even the giant Tesla powerwalls can only handle a typical house's electrical needs for a day or so. In short, there's no easy way to have a backup to 'run your house for days on end' - if there was then we'd all be doing it! What I'm doing with the Jackery is playing (and soothing my eco-conscience). But it's two orders of magnitude from being useful for a household in a multi-day power outage, I'm afraid.

Pip Tomlinson on EU Free Roaming Decade Extension

I will continue to enjoy the benefits of this here in sunny Barcelona for the next 10 years! Though not so convenient when I pop back over to England to see the family! Also, a tip… You can buy a prepaid sim with 12gb of data here in Spain for 10 euros but DON’T do it at the airport! You will be charged €30 for a €10 sim, when there are hundreds of little mobile stores in Barcelona (and I presume other cities) where you can nip in and pick one up for a third of the price. You just have to show your passport.

Mike Robins on How to Stop Windows From Powering Off Your USB Devices

In a recent TechAddicts Podcast (26th June) there was a discussion about the Logitech MX Master 3 Mouse which would lose connection intermittently. I thought it worth reposting this reminder that often USB ports are 'powered down' by Windows - to save power, this behaviour can be turned off. So if anyone has a USB device that seems to go to sleep, it is worth checking that the USB ports / USB Hub are set to keep powered up at all times.

    Matt Jones on Raleigh Vektar

Another great walk down memory lane. Thanks! I was recently reminded of the Vektar when the owner of my local childhood bike shop passed away and this old photo was shared. If you look in the window on the right you can see a shiny new Vektar, along with promotional graphics. I remember this vividly as I spent many an hour with my nose pressed up against the window lusting after it! 13 year olds like me had just been introduced to an 8-bit Trans Am (Knight Rider), Motorcycles (Street Hawk) and Helicopters (Airwolf) so when they told us about a computerised bike, we didn’t think they meant a cheap radio and a siren! We were young and naive enough to think we were getting AI and self driving ability! As soon as we learned it couldn’t talk, and you still had to pedal it we soon lost interest, and I think the spoilt brats that got them for Christmas were all gravely disappointed!

Jeremy Harpham on the Sony Neckband SRS-NB10 bluetooth headset I was getting ear troubles with continued use of in-ear or over ear headphones on too many Teams/Zoom calls. Like many, my working world has reversed since the pandemic. Instead of 80% office I'm now 80% home. This headset would not make sense in an office environment. Comfort - Superb. All day wearable to an extent that you don't notice it. Sound quality - fabulous for listening to voice calls, podcasts, casual radio listening. Don't bother if for music. Call clarity is excellent. Does pick up louder background noise. Battery life is a full 5 days working-week (so 40 hours?). And USB-C charging too with quick top-up. Couple of hours for a full charge. Build quality is typical Sony, so great. Bluetooth never drops. Multipoint to 2 devices. Exceeded my expectations and is definitely now my main device for work calls. Excellent value for money.

A helpful website that I've used over the years (and much better these days than it used to be) for finding alternatives to lots of mainstream software and services for all platforms. Punch in a piece of software or an online service and it spits back all sorts of other options in the same realm. The results are generally a good mix of open-source and paid alternatives. The site has introduced me to a lot of software and services that I didn't know existed. Handy link to have in your bookmarks to browse on a rainy day... or when you're thinking about abandoning Google services for the millionth time 😉

Jeremy Harpham on USB C and Proprietary Chargers

Try thinking the other way round... For example my OnePlus and Xiaomi rapid chargers work as standard USB-C chargers with other devices. The dedicated cables for the super fast charging were so that the thermal management could be in the power brick and not in the phone. I believe USB Power Delivery cables now do something similar.

I enjoyed the bit about Pocket PC's on the last show! I jumped onboard with the original XDA, and Jumped off right at the end with the HTC HD2! I had pretty much every incarnation in between, including the iMate Jam Ted mentioned. My personal favourite was the HTC Advantage that had a 4GB HDD (Yes, spinning HDD)! Along with the Battery life not being great, I recall the XDA also had volatile memory! So, if your battery hit zero, you would lose all your data, messages etc. until you synced with your PC! Any messages that you had  received after the last sync would be lost forever! Kids don't know they are born today 😂 Tech was so much more fun then though.

We do feel for people having to endure ludicrous heat in India during this current peak, including one of our PSC Group members Babul Mohanty who asks…

…how hot should we allow our batteries to be? My battery frequently crosses 40°C while fast (15W) or wireless charging (5W) in the daytime. I believe Samsung's recommendation of 10-40°C is about ambient temperature. And even if outside it is 40°C+, inside the house it will be much less. Also the phone regulates its battery temperature by slowing down charging as it gets hotter. Still I would like to know at what battery temperature it starts to affect it adversely. A few days ago I was fast wireless charging (10W) at noon and the battery temperature reached 45°C and it stopped charging. I have stopped wireless charging completely. I use the 25W charger only in emergencies, and only inside an Air-conditioned room. I use the 15W charger mostly.

    Ian Chapple

Hard to know what the manufacturers can do, apart from throttling charging to keep temperatures down, whether wireless or wired. It's not easy to improve/increase the cooling within the phone itself.

    Kurt Kaufman

You're probably doing the right thing by using slow charging wherever possible, as that will produce the least amount of heat.

    AJ Santos

I had that problem with my Pixel 3 XL in India when I was there a few years ago.

Quick fix I found was to charge with the cable and have the phone on surfaces like kitchen floor tiles, kitchen top, marble, that type of surface. That helped to dissipate heat from the back of the mobile or the screen and bring the phone temperature down and worked quite quickly.

It seems like Google is puring tons of resources into Chrome OS lately, building it out as a platform that supports almost all use cases you could imagine on desktops and tablets. The company only recently revealed that it’s adding Steam support, and there are a lot of other upcoming features that were already teased during CES 2022, like deeper integration with Android phones such as the capability to interact with your mobile device’s screen right on your Chromebook.

Only replaced 6 years later with an Atari ST - I sold the last one, one broke but I still have a Spectrum Plus 48K in the attic. Might have to dig it out, complete with tape recorder. What was your first foray into computing?

I think it was a BBC Micro (or Acorn) at home and IBM XT at work. Mid-80's.

    Adrian Brain

Mine was the Sinclair ZX81, after having played with my (at the time) girlfriend's brother's ZX80, which he assembled himself.

    Phillip Wray

Vic-20 for me. After polytechnic I became a software engineer so multiple other types of machines mainly DEC before PCs came along!

    Wayne Kelly

Vic 20 for me too. We used to have zx80 and zx81s at school running on old massive black and white TVs. Always thought the zx80 looked better and more futuristic than the zx81.

    Chris Kelly

The first I had at home was the ZX80 but before that I had used the Commodore PET to learn BASIC (Beginners' All Purpose Instruction Code) at college in the late 70's. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commodore_PET?wprov=sfti1

    Matt Jones

I was a ZX81 guy! A while back I discovered a ZX81 emulator on the iPad, and managed to remember enough to write a simple program that ran first time with no syntax errors ! I was really impressed considering it was nearly 40 years ago and I was only about 12 at the time, and have had nothing to do with even trying to program these things since. 😂

    Xerxes Hodivala

ZX81, Acorn Atom, ZX Spectrum, Atari 800XL. They were all great in their way but then I switched up to an Atari ST when I went to uni. That machine was in a different league. I learned four different programming languages on it.
