Peer Outwards from Within with Natalie Khun from The Class

Peer Outwards from Within with Natalie Khun from The Class

Natalie Khun partnered with Taryn Toomey to bring the vision of The Class to life and in turn discovered it was her vocation. Raised by an ex-nun and a doctor, Natalie found ways to use the physical body to experience spirituality and use spirituality to live more freely in the body. She helped grow The Class and the business from a two-woman team operating out of the founder’s apartment to what it is today, with studios in New York and Los Angeles, and a digital platform offering mindfulness practices to students in 71 countries across the globe.

The Class is not about outward appearance, it is about inward appearance. The goal is to change the way we think about fitness and movement, so we can understand what it feels like to be alive within you, under your skin. So when we come to this place of fatigue and exhaustion, we are not living there for the purpose of calorie counting or body scuplting, we are living there to understand our mind and hearts response to challenge and difficulty.

Natalie discusses the weight of mental health and how we can use this body of work and this community of people to do something different. She believes that our biggest want is belonging. Explaining that if we continue to chase the way we look, how we act, or what we have in order to fit in it is simply a hollow shell of a promise of belonging. When ultimately we are seeking the feeling of home.

Natalie is dedicated to using movement and breath to create a stronger, clearer connection to self. She hopes that students leave her Class feeling more alive, more connected to themselves, and therefore, to the greater world around them.

Tapping into our senses, it opens up a whole new way of creating. We build connection through this universal way to love. That sense of discovery and possibility that comes from it is undeniable. From the Beatles to The Beastie Boys to Biggie (Notorious BIG)  to Cardi B, music has meaning in leadership.

All The Feels: Generational Healing & Male Mental Wellness with Author Romal Tune

All The Feels: Generational Healing & Male Mental Wellness with Author Romal Tune

Today’s guest is Romal Tune, a full-time speaker and best-selling author. Committed to living into the six-word sentence that defines his life - “he helps people heal their stories” - his platform and cross-sector relationships have positioned him as a global leader who equips individuals, nonprofit leaders, and executives to overcome setbacks and achieve success.

Romal joins us to discuss the power of stillness and what it looks like to heal. He suggests that instead of building our relationship with busy, we should build our relationship with connection. He reminds us that on the other side of pain is healing as he takes us through his own personal journey and demonstrates how he did the work by facing his son and the steps he took to re-pave his path.

As he leans into these wounded parts of his story we get a glimpse into what it looks like to find peace and happiness, truly discovering success from our trauma. As we walk through this journey with a masculine scope we bear witness to a unqiue lens of generational healing and in the end we are left questioning who we desire to become in this world.

Mini Wave - I'll Just Do it Myself

Mini Wave - I'll Just Do it Myself

5 words that you probably say that gets in the way of your progress.

    "I'll just do it myself".

We hear it more times than is healthy. And, as leaders, you’re likely committed to getting it ‘right’, but aren’t convinced others on your team can do as good a job as you. Putting it bluntly, you welcome mistakes, but small ones that can be cleaned up immediately.

You most certainly don’t want to be interpreted as a leader who’s above doing the ‘work,’ so your knee-jerk reaction is to get in the trenches with others, even though you can do it with your eyes closed.

But here's the thing, if you want more time in your day, or better yet, spaciousness, look at how you’re showing up in relation to your people and projects.

The most effective leaders are willing to ask for help. They’re not afraid to look like they don’t have all the answers, and they aren’t playing a game of perfection.

We chat through how to do that.

Mini Wave - Building Capacity When the Tide is High

Mini Wave - Building Capacity When the Tide is High

“Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.” ~ Audre Lorde

Women have a long and hard legacy of caring for others in the United States.   Take a look at the care roles historically held by women and also those that are rooted in systemic conditions, circumstances, and scenarios  that drive caring roles for Black, Latina, and immigrant women, and you’ll see that they often do not end with the close of the workday.  Many women - leaders in the home and outside of home -- do not have an “ end of a workday”.  The clock is on overload.  The tide is high and is often always high.   Women  often personify care.

The ubiquity of care gives me pause.  “In the event of a sudden drop in pressure, an oxygen mask will drop from above. Secure your own mask first before assisting others.” This idea of ensuring our own well-being is at the center of self-care and building capacity when the tide is high.. Self-care is doing something that benefits you – and only you – spiritually, physically, or mentally. For many, cultural wisdom about health, spirituality, and the strength of community has often been provided by women elders.  Our soul sages.   “Everything on earth has a purpose, every disease an herb to cure it, and every person a mission. This is the Indian theory of existence.” Morning Dove, 1888 – 1936

The many resources held by women elders, we call them soul sages at the Tidal Podcast. These women often share resources, remedies, and soul shifting revelations  through stories and anecdotal examples; they  pass along history and understanding for particular practices, as well as helpful ideas that support women and communities of women seeking to improve their health or simply heal from trauma .  We need it in these “high tide times” .

To practice self-care  -- to build capacity -- is to make a decision to put yourself at the center of your own life. It means you have decided to acknowledge, address, and take care of your body’s needs – emotionally, physically, mentally, and spiritually, among many other ways. Put aside guilt, shame, anxiety, or  fear that to place yourself first in your own life is somehow wrong. Find creative outlets that feed your passions, empower them. Trust your instincts. And please, stop being so hard on yourself. Give yourself some room to forgive yourself. Be kind to yourself. Get support. Take lessons from your sheroes. Frolic.  Find your freedom.  And when you do, the tide will turn towards your highest good.

We're going to end this mini wave w/ one important wave … Make time to Make yourself number one.

    Until next time…..

    Making Waves with Eve Rodsky

We are honored today to be joined by the New York Times best-selling author, Eve Rodksy.

Eve Rodsky transformed a “blueberries breakdown” into a catalyst for social change when she applied her Harvard-trained background in organizational management to ask the simple yet profound question: What would happen if we treated our homes as our most important organizations?

Her New York Times bestselling book and Reese’s Book Club Pick, Fair Play, a gamified life-management system that helps partners rebalance their domestic workload and reimagine their relationship, has elevated the cultural conversation about the value of unpaid labor and care. In her highly anticipated follow-up, Find Your Unicorn Space: Reclaim Your Creative Life in a Too-Busy World, Rodsky explores the cross-section between the science of creativity, productivity, and resilience.

Rodsky aims to inspire a new narrative around the equality of time and the individual right to personal time choice that influences sustainable and lasting change on a policy level. Mini Wave - Love is at the Heart of Leadership

Mini Wave - Love is at the Heart of Leadership

In case you're new to the The Tidal Podcast, we care a lot about experiencing life the way that YOU want to, while at the same time caring about the impact we have on others and the world around us.

And we talk a lot about leadership, starting with redefining what it means, which in doing so, you’ll recognize you have more power than you think. I know life can be hard, and all of us humans (including us)  can get caught up with our  circumstances and lose sight of how much agency we actually have over them.

The heart of leadership is rooted in the most powerful 4 letter word. Any guesses?

    L-O-V-E

Imagine what’s possible if more of us lead from LOVE in ALL areas of our life.  Watch the ripples get created.

In honour of of mental children's health month, we're joined by Natalie Von Tiechman, the founder of Miindfully, a company that’s created the very first meditation stuffie for kids that offers a full sensory experience.

Natalie’s passion for children’s wellness hit an all-time high when her and her family of four young boys experienced COVID-19 (Natalie being Canada’s 29th confirmed case). Witnessing the mental-health impact in our communities, particularly on children and young-adults, and going through that experience gave Natalie a wider depth of insight on how to deal with situations that are beyond our control and the trauma it can play on us mentally.  She founded MIINDFULLY. and created mediTATE, the first meditation stuffie that has not only changed the lives of many children but has acted as a disrupter in the category of children’s toys. Her mission is to utilise this cuddly breathing buddy to connect children and young adults to the power of meditation and mindfulness in a way that makes sense for them, helping them learn and explore magical, child and young adult-focuaed meditations.

Natalie is also a certified yoga instructor, trained Crisis Responder for Kids Help Phone, has a diploma in Children’s Mindfulness from the Centre of Excellence, and has her CPD certificate in Mindfulness in Children.

Mini Wave - Intention Vs. Impact

Mini Wave - Intention Vs. Impact

In this mini-wave, we give you a tool that's a bit of an ‘ace’ card when it comes to showing up in leadership. We hear so much talk about being intentional, however, we want you to consider does your ‘intention’ align with your impact?

Think of intent and impact like peanut butter and jelly. They compliment each other. Yet, we often think of them as separate. Nowadays, the personal growth industry is huge, and versions of the word 'intentional' are slapped across every IG post, notebook, and t-shirt - yet we don’t talk enough about the resulting impact.

Being intentional without considering your impact, is like trying to sail a ship without the consideration or experience of the ocean.

Responsibility is BFF with intentionality and impact.

    Let's get into it.

Mini Wave - The Power of Intention

Mini Wave - The Power of Intention

At the Heart of The Tidal Podcast is the word leadership, and remember all of us are leaders and really it’s about how we show up.

By upgrading your understanding of the word leadership, we wholeheartedly believe you’ll experience more agency and influence over any circumstance you face.

Consider this…. The power of intention is a declaration of a future state that you will do, based on your passion, values, and purpose; it is why you have set the goals you’ve set, your internal raison d’être. The power of your intention can change your life – it is how you show up, it is how you BE.

If you can express this power of intention to your team, they are likely to understand your mission and their purpose, which will motivate and inspire them in turn. Team members want someone to look up to h=who has a clear outlook on where to go and why. The destination needs to be clear – the leader needs to BE it and show it. For employees, the clearer the WHY the easier the HOW.

The Power of Intention is who leaders BE to create an inspiring vision that quite literally inspires and ignites teams – and in turn teams are empowered to BE, to  achieve – the vision. They’ll feel the confidence to make decisions needed to get to where the team wants to BE.

Your power of intention was formed by experiences you’ve had throughout your life that formed who you are. These experiences, combined with your passion and purpose, form your intention – what you choose to BE.

Let's make this real. Here’s a pro-tip. Intention is internal before it is external.  When I find myself unclear, in any situation and I’m feeling frustrated, overwhelmed, anxious, frazzled, unsure (just to name a few) the most powerful question I’ve found to ask myself in the moment is…”What is my internal intention?”  Then I wait for my innate, internal voice -- my heart voice -- not my head voice -- to speak with clarity, knowing that that truth has a profound, and likely positive impact on external environments. ”  When I invoke my intention, the universe meets us at the point of action.

From this way of leading, watch the ripples get created.

Trice has been collecting curiosities and rarified objects since the age of 15 and grew his career to include brand development, design, and sourcing.

Making Waves by Betting on Yourself with Kim Hill (Black Eyed Peas)

Making Waves by Betting on Yourself with Kim Hill (Black Eyed Peas)

Welcome to the Tidal Podcast - episode 1!

To kick things off, we have Kim HIll, who was in The Black Eyed Peas. And then she quit.

The NY Times OP Doc on Hill set a record 10M views while empowering women around the globe. She shared the stage with the late Biggie Smalls and co-wrote Tupac's "Mamas Just a Little Girl," on the multi platinum Grammy nominated album, Better Dayz. She sang on Jane's Addiction “Superhero”, theme song for Entourage and has written TV campaigns for Target and Old Navy. She starred in the award winning indie film, In The Morning, appeared in Sofia Ford Coppola’s film, and On The Rocks with Rashida Jones and Bill Murray to name a few. While she’s most recognizable as the original singer in The Black Eyed Peas, Hill broke records with her indie release Sugarhill, crystalizing her sound in a movement she helped define.

But it wasn't until 2020, when Hill turned her creative efforts towards textile and furniture design, that she felt all of the stars align. She began weaving macrame onto vintage outdoor chair frames and it took off like wildfire. Her chair sculptures have been in exhibits, commissioned by multidisciplinary artists like Derrick Adams and adorn the decks of The Rockaway Hotel. The line is called Hazel and Shirley, an homage to her late grandmother and mother who were textile designers and supported all of her aspirations. This addition pivoted her natural body care line NEXT OF KIM into a lifestyle brand; which has been featured on NBC, Fox 5, Elle and Allure Magazines.

Hill personifies what happens when you stop mixing records and start mixing textiles and she’s here today to talk to us about what it means to make waves of impact when you bet on yourself.

    Enjoy!
