Even More Amazing Gluten-Free Holiday Recipes

Welcome to the Travel Gluten Free Podcast. I’m excited to bring another holiday recipe episode to you today. I’ve always loved baking, and after going gluten-free, I had to learn not only how to bake gluten-free, but how to bake gluten-free at a high altitude. Cooking and baking during the holidays can be hard enough. Free up your plate from stress and guesswork and fill it with some of these delicious holiday recipes.

I haven’t made all of these recipes yet, but every one is from one of many gluten-free sites that I love and trust. From Apple Cider Margaritas, to Cinnamon Orange Cranberry sauce, to Citrus and Herb Buttered Turkey - there’s something for everyone this episode. And, of course, my favorite part is always the dessert, so you’ll find plenty of sweet options for your table this holiday season.

All of the recipes mentioned will be linked and available on my blogpost, here at Travel Gluten Free. You’ll also find plenty of information to get you through the holidays gluten-free on my website. You can even find holiday gifts at my Tee Public shop for you or your GF loved one.

Make sure to tune in for next week’s episode, where I bring you some portable gluten-free food ideas for your next trip.

    Episode 11

Living Gluten Free in Toronto with Ashley from Celiac and the Six

Welcome to the Travel Gluten Free Podcast. Today, I have Ashley from ‘Celiac and the Six.' Ashley loves to bake, travel, and explore a gluten-free world for her and her daughter. She also hosts a Facebook group for young moms also living gluten-free.

    Being Diagnosed with Celiac Disease

Ashley found out she had celiac as a teenager. Working in a bakery, surrounded by flour, she felt something wasn't right in her body. Her doctor insisted it was IBS, but as her reaction to certain foods worsened, Ashley knew it was more than that. By being persistent, she was able to get tested and diagnosed.

Creating a Platform for Gluten-Free Moms

While pregnant, Ashley noticed common pregnancy tips weren't always accessible for gluten-free women. She saw a need for a community of GF women and mothers, and decided to make one.

'Celiac and the Six' was born out of Ashley's love for Drake. It all started from a desire to showcase GF finds while also becoming a mother. Ashley started out on Instagram, and has watched her community grow over the last year.

Finding Gluten-Free Options in Toronto, Canada

Ashley describes the food scene in Toronto as 10/10. Not only are there many cultures, there are many GF-dedicated restaurants. When looking for a place to eat, Ashley makes sure to ask plenty of questions. What cross-contact protocols do they have? Where do they source their gluten-free ingredients?

Ashley also made a list of her favorite GF options in the Toronto area, such as Riz, The Beansprout, Almond Butterfly and Kelly’s Landing. Few restaurants offer diverse GF options for kids, so she included places both she and her daughter love. Most of her favorite spots are locally-owned and allergen-conscious. She also recommends comfort food stops such as Hype Food Co, The Keg, Swiss Chalet and Boston Pizza. For Italian, her go-tos are Scaddabush, Giro d’Italia, and Il Fornello

Listen in to hear Ashley's favorite GF spots, her experience with celiac and motherhood, and how to join her GF community.

Connect with Ashley on her website, Celiac and the 6ix, or at her Instagram under the same name.

How to Find Safe, Gluten-Free Restaurants for Your Kids with Jenn Bigler

How to Find Safe, Gluten-Free Restaurants for Your Kids with Jenn Bigler

    Travel Gluten Free Podcast

    S07 Episode 10

How to Find Safe, Gluten-Free Restaurants for Your Kids with Jenn Bigler

Welcome to the Travel Gluten Free Podcast. Today, I’m with Jenn Bigler from Living Freely Gluten Free. She has a platform dedicated to gluten-free and dairy-free life, and is the author of two GF cookbooks. With multiple food allergies in the house, Jenn is passionate about making delicious meals for the whole family.

Food Allergies in the Whole Family

Jenn discovered her gluten allergy in her 20s, and later noticed symptoms of food allergy in her kids. Food allergy symptoms can be misdiagnosed as ADHD or other behavioral disorders, so Jenn encourages parents to be insistent and advocate on their kids’ behalf.

Now, Jenn is 10 years gluten-free. She started her blog as a recipe collection from a creative young mom learning how to feed herself and her son. She turned that blog into a business, and now inspires people with recipes to help them lead happy, healthy lives.

    Family-Friendly Gluten-Free Cooking

Jenn is the author of two cookbooks: “Living Freely Gluten Free” and “101 Incredible Gluten Free Recipes.” Both are gluten free and dairy free. She recommends the first to anyone who’s new to cooking and wants family-friendly, homestyle meals. The second is more adventurous, with recipes for German chocolate cake, donuts, and more. Both books focus on cooking one meal for the whole family, and doing it with confidence.

    Traveling with Kids Gluten-Free

Jenn always recommends packing safe snacks and meals while going on trips. Each of her kids have their own snack bag, to be refilled and taken anywhere. Lately, she’s been bringing digestive enzymes, activated charcoal, and lactic tablets to avoid an upset stomach ruining another vacation.

Her family’s next trip is to Disneyland. One of Jenn’s favorite restaurants is the Wine Country Trattoria in California Adventure. With so many gluten-free options, the whole family is happy to eat there. They love that Disney is so accommodating to allergies.

Listen in to hear how Jenn built her gluten-free platform, her experience with publishing, and her advice for working around a multi-allergy family.

Jenn is offering 20% off her cookbooks for with code ‘2021’ on her website livingfreelyglutenfree.com

Happy 30th Birthday to Our Sponsor Kinnikinnick!

The Advantages of Camping in State Parks Gluten Free

The Advantages of Camping in State Parks Gluten Free

    S07 Episode 09

The Advantages of Camping in State Parks Gluten Free

We all love our national parks. But it's so easy to overlook the sunning state parks that many of us have right in our backyard! In this episode, I share some of the benefits I've learned in choosing a state park over a national park. You'll find that you can do a lot of the same activities inside a state park. Sometimes, there's even more options for fun than at a national park! I also have a list of my favorite state parks (on both coasts!) to get you excited for your next gluten free adventure.

Avoid the Crowd of a National Park

One of the biggest advantages of staying at a state park over a national park is the crowds. State parks are often less crowded than national parks, where the wait time just to get inside can be up to two hours. I sometimes only see two or three other people camping when I stay in state parks. With fewer people camping, hiking, or biking, you're more free to get outside and relax in the outdoors.

    Less Restrictions on Your Visit

State parks don't typically have the same protective regulations that national parks do. This means there is less restriction on what activities you can do in a state park. Boating and other watersports, for example, are often prohibited in national parks--but there are plenty of options inside a state park! Best of all, state parks are dog-friendly! No need to leave your furry friend behind at the campsite like in national parks; in state parks, they're allowed on the hiking trail with you!

Take Advantage of Your Backyard’s Beauty

Most of all, state parks are local. They’re easy to drive to, and there’s usually two dozen or more in any given state. It’s easy to find a nearby state park: just Google ‘state parks’ and your state’s name. You don't have to go out of your way to find something amazing; oftentimes, state parks can only be a 15 minute drive away. So, if you’re considering a national park, check to see if there’s a state park nearby! You can always take advantage of the lower prices, fewer crowds, and the overlooked beauty of your local state park.

Happy 30th Birthday to Our Sponsor Kinnikinnick!

    Tips on Camping Gluten-Free

Since many people have been camping for their COVID vacation, I wanted to share with you great gluten-free food prep tips for creating meals, camping snacks, and food storage when you're camping. I've learned these experiences the hard way by making mistakes while on the road and eating out of the back of my car or at the campfire. Take steps to eliminate the hassle and expending energy on clean up when you're camping with these camping COVID-19 tips!

    Gluten-Free Snacks for Hiking

If you are going hiking and need hiking snacks, the most efficient way to pack these is to buy single servings and put one type of snack in each Ziploc bag - this is one of the expenses I will incur because Ziploc is sturdier than other brands of plastic storage bags.

    Marinating Gluten-Free Foods

An easy and efficient way to prepare your marinated food is to take your favorite gluten-free salad dressing and place your meal to be marinated into a double Ziploc. If you are using tofu, make sure to use firm tofu and plan to eat the first or second night, as tofu can fall apart quickly. Also, make sure to cut in thick slabs to be more sturdy.

For a quick and easy marinade, take your food to be marinated, add favorite salad dressing, place in double Ziploc, close bag, take all air out, then seal. Keep cold until ready to use.

    Gluten-Free COVID Camping Soups

To create easy soups, prep and blend your spices ahead of time and put them in an air-tight container. Label your container. Use dried spices instead of fresh if you are not going to use them in the first two days. Then, bring along canned items that you are going to use to make your soup. Make only the amount you need for one night - storing leftovers is time and energy-consuming.

Happy 30th Birthday to Our Sponsor Kinnikinnick!

Kinnikinnick is celebrating its 30th birthday and is offering Travel Gluten Free listeners a 10% discount when you use the code TravelGlutenFree at checkout! Traveling Responsibly and Embracing Conscious Travel by Stephen Bailey

Welcome to the Travel Gluten Free Podcast! Today, I have the honor of replaying my last guest’s podcast episode. Stephen Bailey of the Kated Travel Podcast, graciously shared his episode titled Embracing Conscious Travel. I’m excited to share this episode with you, and I believe wholeheartedly that we need to travel responsibly so that the special places on Earth will be left intact and in their beauty and splendor for generations to come.

    Embracing Responsible Travel

Episode 156 of Travel Gluten Free Podcast is a replay of the Kated Travel Podcast’s Episode 252.

“The CEO of Intrepid Travel said that people on trips don't want to be burdened by being conscious, they just want to have a good time. Host Stephen Bailey fundamentally disagrees.

Travel is an opportunity for us to be more conscious, to open our minds to the impact we have on our destinations, and just as importantly, the impact our destinations can have on us. We can all embrace more conscious ways of travel, without losing the care-free feeling of an escape. Being conscious will help us have a more sustainable future and also helps to create a better travel experience, for you, the traveller.”

Living in Africa as a Digital Nomad with Stephen Bailey of Kated Travel Podcast

Welcome to the Travel Gluten Free Podcast! Today, I’m speaking with Stephen Bailey of Kated Travel Podcast about his experience as a digital nomad and his most exciting travel experiences in his 14-year journey around the world.

    Traveling as a Digital Nomad

Stephen traveled to every continent, except Antarctica, by overland travel. Moving to his next destination by train, bus, or walking, he decided on where to go next by where he could get to on the map. On the locations he chose to stay for a period of time, Stephen found a group of travelers to congregate with and decided to give that city an extended stay.

Traveling as a Lifestyle in Comparison to Traveling for Fun

Many traditional forms of employment don’t support working remotely before COVID, so it was definitely harder to live a nomadic lifestyle. Living as a nomad can be challenging since you aren’t in a place for an extended period of time, so it’s hard to make lifelong friends. However, Stephen was able to connect and make friends with locals in the different destinations that he visited.

Listen in to find out how Stephen was able to create a career from travel writing, where he found the best African safari experiences, and why you want to keep your windows and doors closed and locked when traveling through Africa.

    Gluten-Free African Safari Eco-Travel

Welcome to the Travel Gluten Free Podcast, where you can listen in on how to lead a gluten-free lifestyle with more fun and ease! James Mwenda, a native of Kenya, is with me today, and we talk about his fantastic gluten-free, eco-safari tours, which are one of the items on my bucket list for next year! Find out how you can experience Kenyan culture, wildlife, and delicious, fresh, local foods on a Jemu Expeditions tour!

Growing Up Next to Mount Kenya

As a child, James grew up in a village next to Mount Kenya, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Elephants would routinely come into his village and eat everything they could get their trunks around! Finally, rangers came and moved the elephants back into the forest to be in the natural habitat. James enjoyed watching the rangers as a child and knew he wanted to work with wildlife as a ranger ever since.

Saving the Last of the Endangered White Rhinos in Africa

James became a ranger as an adult, and by the time he was able to work with the white rhinos, there were seven of them left on the planet. “My whole perspective changed when I landed being the caretaker of the last of the northern white rhinos. I refused to be the normal caregiver, giving them food and going to sleep and feeling sorry for them. Instead, I wanted to do something for them.” This gave James the motivation to speak up for them and utilize the opportunities available to raise as much awareness as possible for the rhinos and other species he was working with at the time.

Take a Life-Changing Vacation on an African Eco-Safari with Jemu Expeditions

An outstanding safari experience is a life-changing event; James will take you to untouched destinations and meet the local people with unique cultures along the way. This spurs a reality of how we humans are finite in an infinite intricate world. Jemu Expeditions will take you to spots with beauty to see wildlife with stunning backdrops and unbelievable sunsets.

Take Your Next Gluten-Free Vacation with Ellen from Gluten-Free Vacations!

Welcome to the Travel Gluten Free Podcast, where you can listen in on how to lead a gluten-free lifestyle with more fun and ease! Today, I have Ellen from Gluten. To find out more about gluten-free cruising, pick up The Guide to Traveling Gluten Free!

    Shoreline Destinations

Ellen is part of the fantastic team at Shoreline Destinations, a boutique travel agency specializing in destination weddings, family vacations, and couples getaways. Their team helps plan vacations to the Caribbean, Mexico, Europe, Disney & Universal, and more! Ellen’s team loves to share their travel experiences, so when you plan a trip with Gluten-free Vacations, you also have the advantage of the travel experiences from all their team’s experienced travel advisors at Shoreline Destinations.

    Why Ellen Created Gluten-Free Vacations

Ellen loves to “see new locations and go to new destinations,” with the Caribbean, Mexico, and Disney as her top three favorite destinations because these places offer exceptional options for gluten-free travelers. When you feel like you can’t travel because you are gluten-free, the best first step when choosing a vacation is to go to an all-inclusive location with strict protocols in place. There are multiple restaurants you can eat at, extensive gluten-free choices on the menus, making it easier for anyone who’s gluten-free, especially those who are new to the gluten-free lifestyle.

    Best Destinations for Gluten-Free Travelers

“People don’t want to go on vacation and only have the option of eating meat and vegetables.” I agree! That’s why Ellen vets and personally visits the locations that she sends her clients to ensure they can eat comfort foods such as gluten-free waffles and gluten-free pancakes. “You want to indulge and have a good time on vacation. You want to feel like you’re eating what the rest of the group is eating.” That’s for sure! Being able to feel “normal” when you’re eating is such a relief and happy moment when you’re gluten-free.

Adventure Travel with a Touch of Luxury with Robin Cline of Cline & Co.

Welcome to the Travel Gluten Free Podcast, where you can listen in on how to lead a gluten-free lifestyle with more fun and ease! I’ll share with you how to eat safely on a cruise ship, and how to ensure you’ll get safe, gluten-free food every day of your cruise. To find out more about gluten-free cruising, pick up The Guide to Traveling Gluten Free!

Adventure Travel with a Touch of Luxury

Robin’s travel niche is providing her clients with adventure travel that has a luxury backdrop. One of her favorite escapades is on a horseback safari in glamping style. “You still get this great sense of adventure and you’re always going to a different place,” says Robin. Riding horses daily with the addition of hot meals and showers is a great way to spend your vacation time when on safari.

    Glamping VS. Camping

With glamping, Robin explains, everything is done for you - the tent set-up, cooked meals, and all the amenities you need are set up and ready for you to come back to your campsite for a relaxing evening. “It’s almost like having a traveling hotel come with you on vacation.” You have a canvas tent and a sleeping bag with camping, similar to what you would expect with regular camping.

    Dining While Camping or Glamping

Robin can set up your gluten-free meals ahead of time, as well as vegetarian meals too! Dietary requests can be made and created on any of Robin’s vacation excursions, except for a strict vegan diet.

    How to Cruise Gluten-Free

    How to Cruise Gluten-Free

    Travel Gluten Free Podcast

    Episode 24

    S06 How to Cruise Gluten-Free

Welcome to the Travel Gluten Free Podcast, where you can listen in on how to lead a gluten-free lifestyle with more fun and ease! I’ll share with you how to eat safely on a cruise ship, and how to ensure you’ll get safe, gluten-free food every day of your cruise. To find out more about gluten-free cruising, pick up The Guide to Traveling Gluten Free!

    Booking Your Gluten-Free Cruise

Whether you’re booking online through the cruise line or your favorite website or travel agent, you’ll want to make sure to call the cruise line with your itinerary cruise number and tell them you are gluten-free. In addition, you’ll want to let them know of any other food allergies or sensitivities you have so they can list all of them on your account. This way, the Matre’ D can pull up your list and make sure you receive safe food during your cruise vacation.

Choosing Your Dining Room on Your Gluten-Free Cruise

Choose one dining room you would like to eat at for the rest of the week and eat there consistently as the staff, and your maitre D will be more familiar with your diet when you frequent their restaurant. To ensure you receive safe food, try to find the Matre’ D for your restaurant, and before the cruise starts, make sure to thoroughly explain your food sensitivity, allergy or Celiac and the importance of receiving safe food because of medical reasons and that your diet isn’t a preference. Be clear with him or her that you will be dining in that room all week for dinner, and you’re excited to see what dishes you can eat during your time on your cruise vacation.

    Dining on Your Gluten-Free Cruise

Let your waiter know you have a pre-order because of a food allergy, as many people don't understand Celiac or auto-immune disease. Feel free to tell the Matre' D you put in your pre-order the night before and that you have a food allergy, and your food should come out with the rest of the food at your table.

Eating Gluten-Free on the Cruise Ship Buffet

Quite honestly, this is the only buffet that I feel safe eating because the chefs on cruise lines really know their food! Look around to see what choices you can see are gluten-free, such as fruit, salad without dressing, and steamed veggies. Go to the counter and ask for the head chef. He or she will give you a tour of the buffet and let you know what foods are safe for you to eat and which ones you’ll want to avoid.

    The Big Four of Rome

Welcome to the Travel Gluten Free Podcast, where you can listen in on how to lead a gluten-free lifestyle with more fun and ease! Travel Gluten Free gives you valuable information from finding a safe restaurant to knowing what food is safe to eat when you travel; I'll be with you every step of the way on your gluten-free journey. Lead your gluten-free life, don't let being gluten-free lead your life. Enjoy Food, Enjoy Travel, and Enjoy Life with your show host, Elikqitie! If you are looking to experience Italy’s culture, you may want to pass on going to Rome. However, if you don’t mind the tourist crowds and would like to spend a week or two checking out a few of the main attractions in Italy, then Rome is the perfect vacation spot for your next overseas adventure! “If you really like ruins, then Rome would be a fantastic place to vacation!” says Shireen. She suggests spending two days in Rome and spending an additional day visiting the Vatican.

Today I talk with my friend Shireen, another world traveler and culture hound! Shireen shares her experience in Rome, what to see and do when in Rome, and where you can find the tastiest gelato on your travels around Italy!

What to Know When Visiting Rome

If you are looking to experience Italy’s culture, you may want to pass on going to Rome. If you don’t mind the tourist crowds and would like to spend a week or two checking out a few of the main attractions in Italy, then Rome is the perfect vacation spot for your next overseas adventure! “If you really like ruins, then Rome would be a fantastic place to vacation!” says Shireen. She suggests spending two days in Rome and spending an additional day to visit the Vatican.

Favorite Way to Travel in Rome

Shireen and I are both fans of hop-on and hop-off bus tours around the globe. If you’re wanting to get a great deal on your next hop-on and hop-off adventure, check out my travel deals page on my website. We both agree that getting a deal on a bus tour is the perfect way to quickly see many of the sites. In addition, this is an excellent method to transport yourself around a city, without having to worry about parking and driving in a town you aren’t familiar with.

With the bus tour, you can see many of the major attractions quickly. If you have a limited amount of time in a city, this is the perfect way to capture various highlights in just a day or two of your visit. In addition, you can get great pictures of the statues, buildings, and cultural places in the city you are vacationing when you sit in the open-air bus seating.

You’ll definitely want to check out the local churches as many of them sell opera tickets for different performances at the local places of worship. Shireen says, “My friend that was with me doesn’t even like opera and she loved it!” You’ll hear the arias - the opera's highlights - which give you a condensed version of an entire opera without missing the best pieces.

    When in Rome, Eat Gelato!

Shireen has the BEST philosophy when it comes to eating gelato: “Once you finish eating gelato, you just get more gelato! It’s a philosophy that’s very easy to live by, and very easy to follow.” I am on board with that philosophy for sure! You can find gelato every 200 yards in Rome, so it’s a great place to test many different flavors and brands of gelato!

    When to Visit Rome

Although the summertime is a good time of the year to visit if you’re looking for fewer crowds, it’s also scorching in Rome during the summertime. Of course, you can visit in the cooler months for better weather, but you will find that it’s more crowded in Rome.

    Visiting the Colosseum in Rome

“There’s so much history around the Colosseum in Rome.” As a lover of history, the Colosseum was the perfect spot for her to visit. You can learn many of the details about the mystery of the Colosseum that you didn’t learn in school. “You also don’t realize how big it is until you are standing right next to it. The Colosseum is massive!.” She says, “There’s something very magical about knowing how many thousands of years old it is, and yet it’s still standing. You’re really standing in history.”

    The Pantheon

Considered a religious structure, the Pantheon is a sundial that is restricted to the amount of visitors that can walk the steps in an effort to preserve this ancient Roman landmark. When you visit, you’ll need to be covered to your shoulders and down to your knees, similar to when you could visit Notre Dame in Paris.

The Infamous Trevi Fountain in Rome

This ornate fountain contains many statues of Roman gods, in various poses, with water spouting from the carved stone. Every year, people climb into the fountain, although that is not allowed in Rome. However, Italian police are standing around the fountain, so be warned that you can get caught if you decide to take a dip in the Trevi Fountain!

    Visiting the Vatican

Shireen suggests planning ahead and getting a tour of the Vatican. Not only do you receive a great tour, but you also get to skip the wait! Bypass the line and get into the Vatican with a tour. Once you are in, you can walk about anywhere tourists are allowed to visit inside this ancient building.

Celebrating 30 Years of Gluten-Free Goodness with Jerry Bigam of Kinnickinnick Gluten Free Foods

Jerry Bigam joins me today to chat about the history and development of his delicious and tasty line of gluten-free foods and gluten-free snacks. Jerry and Kinnikinnick have spearheaded many firsts in the world of gluten-free food, including the first food company to sell food from a company website and is currently the only family-owned gluten-free food company. Listen in to discover how Jerry grew the business to what it is today, how Kinnikinnick is celebrating their 30th anniversary, and the new gluten-free items they are producing for their anniversary celebration!

    Meet Jerry Bigam

Jerry is a native Canadian whose wife was diagnosed with Celiac disease in the early 90s. With a lack of good gluten-free food, Jerry and his wife found Kinnikinnick and decided to purchase half the company. He took Kinnikinnick from a 3,000 square foot facility selling in Canada to a multinational gluten-free brand. You can find out more about the history of Kinnikinnick on their heritage page.

    Why Kinnikinnick?

Kinnikinnick is the name for Bearberry, the favorite fruit of Canadian bears. Naturally high in Vitamin C, these bright red alpine berries are a vital food source that lasts the local bears through the winter.  Native Americans prize them as well, using them in pemmican which is a nutritious mix of meat protein and fat that lasts for years, similar to beef jerky.. In Algonquin, Kinnikinnick also means ‘mixture’, referring to its use with tobacco and believed to carry the smoker’s prayers to the Great Spirit. Tea from the leaves is also used to treat urinary tract diseases and can help with obesity.

    History of Kinnikinnick

In 1991, Ted Wolff and Gudrun Von Selzam moved to Canada from Germany. After stints working in health food stores, they came up with the idea of producing allergy-conscious foods for Edmonton's Farmer's Market. With Ted in charge of recipe development and Gudrun running the marketing department, Kinnikinnick was born!

In 1992, Ted and Gudrun had enough of a following to open their first store, a tiny 250 sq ft space on Whyte Avenue. The following year, they expanded and moved to a 1,500 sq ft store selling made-from-scratch gluten-free creations as well as cookies and pasta. The little business with a big heart begins to boom, and so does their family with the arrival of daughter Robin.

Ted and Gudrun doubled the size of their business by taking over the space next door and opening their doors as the first gluten-free restaurant café in Canada! Within a year, their constantly evolving line of buns and baked goodies are selling in health food stores in Canada.

Lynne Bigam, their #1 customer, diagnosed with Celiac disease, is impressed with Ted and Gudrun's goodies. She and her husband Jerry decided to buy into the company and expand their focus on building new markets.

The Premier Brand for Gluten-Free Snacks, Gluten-Free Desserts, and Gluten-Free Goodies!

Kinnikinnick has been creating, developing, and distributing dozens of gluten-free foods to Celiac and others who cannot eat gluten-free. Their distribution is now worldwide, and gluten-free peeps can order their products to have them shipped anywhere in the world!

    Happy 30th Birthday Kinnikinnick!

Kinnikinnick is celebrating its 30th birthday, and Jerry would like to offer Travel Gluten Free listeners a 10% discount when you use the code TravelGlutenFree at checkout! Order $55 or more and receive your discount when you checkout in your cart!

Jonathan gives details of his hardships, the other pilgrims he and his husband met along the way, and his mistakes while hiking the trail. He also shares his spiritual and philosophical perspective and lessons learned from this adventure through Europe.

    Meet Jonathan Bengel

The world of tax is Jonathan’s life! Growing up in extreme poverty, Jonathan understands how money CAN bring YOU happiness, and he is eager and passionate about shining this light to financial delight for others. With a Bachelor’s in Business Accounting and a Master’s in Secondary Education, Jonathan has mastered profits and taxes over the past 16 years as an IRS Enrolled Agent. He has taken his firm from just 30,000 in revenue to multi-six figures, working with elite consultants, digital marketers, and many self-employed business owners.

What is the Camino de Santiago Trail?

The Camino de Santiago is also known as the Way of Saint James. This is an epic Catholic pilgrimage to the Spanish city of Santiago de Compostela starting in France. The Camino is actually a network of trails with its most popular route, the Camino Francés, sprawling from the city of Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port at the foot of the French Pyrenees to Santiago de Compostela in northwestern Spain.

This well-worn trail has been walked since the early ninth century and has hosted notable people such as royalty, Roman armies, and Catholic pilgrims. Recently, it has attracted a more diverse crowd. In 2017 alone, over 300,000 hikers, known as “peregrinos,” or pilgrims, completed the trek to Santiago.

Beth Jusino is the author of the book Walking to the End of the World: A Thousand Miles on the Camino de Santiago. “Walking the Camino is a chance to intentionally slow down and move at a human pace, to join a history that’s so much bigger than any of us individually.”

Why Jonathon Chose to Walk Over 500 Miles on the Camino de Santiago Trail

The Camino de Santiago is a unique window into the Iberian Peninsula’s historical, natural and cultural beauty. If you look at pictures online, it’s easy to see why he chose this adventure. Actually, he tells his story of why he went and about his husband choosing this journey for them to complete.

With only walking one mile for training, Jonathan and his husband took off for three months and walked the entire trail from start to finish. Listen to his comedic adventure story, how he overcame many of the physical challenges, and how he experienced life, death, and birth on the Camino de Santiago.

    Backpacking Tips and Logistics

When planning to walk your pilgrimage on the Camino de Santiago, there’s a lot to keep in mind. Logistics, places of interest, and finding the best route for your budget, time frame, and fitness level is all key to having a fun and memorable experience on the trail.

Jonathan gives gear tips on what you should buy, what to carry with you, and talks about his mistakes on the trail and what he did to correct them. He also tells his side of the story about naming the group he and his husband walked with and why they want to go back for an anniversary trip!

In this episode, I’ll share with you what you want to do when you visit Stonehenge, visit this World Heritage Site during COVID, and events in Stonehenge and other places of interest, which are featured in the English Heritage organization. Before you visit Stonehenge, make sure to discover more about traveling internationally by picking up The Guide to Traveling Gluten Free before you travel!

    History of Stonehenge

The earliest structures known in the immediate area are four or five pits, three of which appear to have held large pine ‘totem-pole like’ posts erected in the Mesolithic period, between 8500 and 7000 BC; however; no one understands how these posts relate to the later monument of Stonehenge.

When much of southern England was largely covered by woodland, the chalk downland in the area of Stonehenge may have been an unusually open landscape which is the most plausible  reason why this ancient place became the site of an early Neolithic monument complex.

This complex included the causewayed enclosure at Robin Hood’s Ball, two cursus monuments or rectangular earthworks (the Greater, or Stonehenge, and Lesser Cursus), and several long barrows, all dating from the centuries around 3500 BC. The presence of these monuments probably influenced the later location of Stonehenge.

Book Ahead to Visit Stonehenge During COVID Travel

Advance booking is essential to visit Stonehenge, along with wearing a mask at all times. Stonehenge is limiting visitor numbers to help keep everyone safe, and you won’t be able to visit without your booking confirmation. If you’re a Member or Local Residents Pass holder, your ticket will be free, but you still need to book in advance.

    Stonehenge VIP Experience

A remarkable opportunity to spend time inside the tranquil circle of Stonehenge, the VIP experience at Stonehenge takes you up close to this world-famous monument. Walk among the inner circle of the Stonehenge ring and learn the secrets of the stones from your knowledgeable host and experience the power and mystery of these ancient sarsens and bluestones for yourself.

Once you arrive at the stones, you can wander amongst these ancient stones, discovering all the fascinating details on these mighty sarsens and bluestones that are only visible up close. Your knowledgeable host can answer questions. While you're in the stone circle, make sure to take photos; you just can't stand on or touch the stones. Visit for an hour outside of their general admission opening hours with a maximum of 30 people per session.

    Admission Costs for Stonehenge

Stone Circle Experience is priced at £47 for adults (18+) and £28.20 for children aged 5-17. Children under 5 years of age are free. English Heritage Member discounts are available. Guidebooks are priced at £6 and made available in eight languages, detailing the history of Stonehenge and its remarkable landscape.

Stonehenge and other English Heritage Sites Events

When visiting England, you can check out more history by visiting other sites listed on the English Heritage register, which are nearby Stonehenge, such as Tintagel Castle, Pendennis Castle, and Old Sarum. In addition, you can create a week-long trip by adding Dover Castle, Osborne, Hadrian’s Wall, and the Battle Abbey, which are also situated along with southern England.

S06 How to Fly Gluten Free

Welcome to the Travel Gluten Free Podcast, where you can listen in on how to lead a gluten-free lifestyle with more fun and ease! Travel Gluten Free gives you valuable information from finding a safe restaurant to knowing what food is safe to eat when you travel; I'll be with you every step of the way on your gluten-free journey. Lead your gluten-free life, don't let being gluten-free lead your life. Enjoy Food, Enjoy Travel, and Enjoy Life with your show host, Elikqitie!

In this episode, I’ll share with you how to travel gluten-free when you’re flying. Find out how to pack your food, learn how to successfully get through TSA without getting your bag searched and how to communicate to the airlines that you need a specialty gluten-free diet. Learn more about flying gluten-free by picking up a copy of my book, The Guide to Traveling Gluten Free.

    Finding Food in an Airport

Finding safe options to eat in an airport can be super tricky! Many airport restaurants are slammed busy serving, so this puts a high level of cross-contamination in place and creates an unsafe food prep environment for anyone who is Celiac.

Nowadays, some airports are posting their restaurants and offering gluten-free offerings, such as Atlanta Airport Restaurant Menu and Salt Lake City Airport Food Guide. You can look at the restaurants they have and choose accordingly. I will look for Freshens as they have certified gluten-free smoothie offerings, PF Changs for safe food, and Jersey Mike’s subs, all of which offer safe Celiac food. Although Jimmy John’s doesn’t have a gluten-free protocol, I’ve never been sick of one as they are food aware and will change their gloves and give you separate condiment packages.

Types of Snacks to Pack While You’re Flying

When you’re flying gluten-free, certain types of food and snacks are better to take than others when you’re traveling. For example, when traveling, you’ll want to avoid large packaging, food that crumbles easily (such as rice crackers), liquids more than 2oz, chocolate, or any types of coatings which will readily melt. You’ll also want to avoid snack items that can easily leak such as peanut butter and any food that has liquid in the pouch.

You’ll want to look for and bring a snack on the airplane as many airlines do not have safe gluten-free snacks. My favorite snacks to bring on a plane are nuts, meat sticks from EPIC, protein bars, pumpkin seeds, dried fruit, and crackers.

How to Pack Your Gluten Free Snacks When Flying

When packing your snacks, make sure to put them at the top of your suitcase so that they don’t get squished in transit. If you’re packing your snacks in a check-on bag, put smaller bags into a larger Ziploc bag so that they are easy to see if the agent opens up your checked bag after scanning.

Using packing cubes is a great way to organize your vacation necessities, including your food and snacks. I recommend getting smaller sized packing cubes so that you can easily pack your items in a weekend bag or suitcase.

You’ll also want to make sure that you have travel-sized liquids and cosmetics in your bag before you check it or carry-on the airplane. I’ve selected gluten-free travel cosmetics on my website that you’ll love, so check out my Lemongrass Spa gluten-free travel cosmetics and get my favorite, the tinted sunscreen in vanilla flavor!

Getting Through Airport Security with Gluten Free Food

This part can be tricky if you don’t know what to do! When I pack my snacks, I double Ziploc my snacks in bags. After double Ziploc, I’ll take my snacks out of my bag and put them in a separate bin so that agents who are looking at the scanner can tell it’s food and not a dangerous weapon LOL. Additionally, putting all your food in Ziploc bags protects your food packaging from being touched by the TSA agents, keeping your food clean and safe.

Ordering Gluten-Free Food for Your Flight

Make sure to specify that you need a gluten-free meal as soon as you book your ticket. Always call the airline you booked with directly to ensure they have your specialty diet needs taken care of so you aren’t stuck without food on a long flight.
