    Season 08 Episode 14

    What’s For Gluten Free Breakfast?

Most people assume that breakfast meals like bacon and sausages are gluten-free because they are made of meat protein. However, you'd be surprised where you would find gluten lurking in your breakfast! In addition, you'd also be surprised about the many gluten free breakfast options that are available to you! In today's Travel Gluten-free Podcast, I will take you through some fantastic ideas for your gluten-free breakfast and what foods to avoid if you're Celiac or gluten intolerant.

Foods to Avoid for your Gluten-free Breakfast

Breakfast cereals are an everyday staple in the American diet. But be forewarned: there is no lack of gluten in cereals! Many people believe that rice cereals are safe because they are rice-based. However, in my experience, I've found that many rice cereals have gluten!

Malt sweetener or malt flavoring, a common sweetener for rice cereals, is made from barley, which has gluten. I share why you should be careful when consuming breakfast cereals with rice and, ultimately, why you should avoid any foods containing malt or maltodextrin. I cover reasons to look out for maltodextrin in breakfast meats and other breakfast foods and how to label read to ensure your breakfast sausages and bacon are gluten-free.

I also discuss why you should be careful with oats as a Celiac and share some gluten-free oat brands. With oats, you want to ensure that they are purity protocol or certified gluten-free because of the cross-contamination during processing. In addition, you can be sensitive to oat protein. Listen in to learn more details about why oats may affect you if you have Celiac disease.

Food Ideas for your Next Gluten-free Breakfast

Keto cereals are a good choice for a gluten-free breakfast, especially for those on the keto diet or if you're looking to cut out or reduce the amount of sugar in your diet. Discover some fantastic gluten-free keto cereal brands, what to look out for in keto products and why all keto products are not gluten-free.

Find out why certified gluten-free granola is a great option to include in your breakfast and where to find them. Gluten-free bagels and bread are an excellent addition to your breakfast; I share with you some great bagel and bread brands on the market. Since dairy can be hard on your body if you are a Celiac, I'll share why you can find a great alternative to dairy in plant-based protein drinks. In addition, I share some out-of-the-box ideas for your gluten-free breakfast, such as smoked salmon and the healthy fats you can add to your gluten-free breakfast.

Cooking Gluten Free Jewish Foods with Matt Weinstein

Finding healthy and delicious alternative gluten free recipes is always a challenge for many of us who have Celiac disease. In today’s Travel Gluten-free Podcast, I’m excited to host Matt Weinstein from the Glass of Weinstein. Matt is a dedicated gluten-free cook and content creator. Listen in as we talk about his Jewish heritage, how he started cooking gluten-free Jewish foods, and his process for recipe development.

    Discovering Celiac Disease

Matt talks about how he discovered he had Celiac in 2014. He found out after experiencing symptoms he thought were caused by other factors. We recorded this episode in May, which is Celiac awareness month. Matt emphasizes the need to have more enlightenment to the public on the effects of Celiac since most people haven’t grasped the seriousness of the disease.

The Glass of Weinstein Gluten Free Jewish Recipes is Born

Matt credits his mum for arousing his curiosity and love for food through her love for cooking which came out even more during the big Jewish dinner like Yom Kippur.

The Glass of Weinstein was born during the pandemic. With theaters closed and Matt in the theater business, Matt didn’t have much to do. So he turned to his love for cooking for inspiration and eventually discovered that remaking his traditional Jewish foods into a gluten-free recipe was a great way to share delicious traditional Jewish foods while transforming them into amazing gluten-free recipes.

How Matt Created his Gluten Free Recipes

Gluten-free food has a reputation for being subpar. Matt gets his motivation to make his recipes by turning around this stereotype of gluten-free food. Matt has a true passion for delicious gluten-free food, constantly testing out recipes to create delicious gluten-free meals! Listen in as Matt shares some of his favorite recipes at Glass of Weinstein. Being a lover of fine wine, Matt also talks about types of wine and cider and how he incorporates them into his recipes.

We shall be talking about the food side of Bierly Brewing, and we’ll chat with Amelia about Amelia's experience with Celiac disease, how Amelia and JP started their dedicated gluten-free brewery and the great menus created at Bierly Brewing.

    Amelia’s Experience with Celiac Disease

Amelia’s mom was diagnosed with Celiac in the 1970s. So, when Amelia was born in the 80s, Amelia's parents were looking out for any signs of Celiac disease. When Amelia was older, they had different tests, including the genetic test showing they had two genes for Celiac disease. Growing up, Amelia was on a gluten-free diet, and learned how to eat gluten-free as a way of life.

Starting Off with JP Brewing Gluten-Free Beer

Amelia shares the incredible journey of Bierly Brewing, which started off with the gluten free brewing side. However, Amelia and JP had a bigger dream. He wanted Bierly Brewing to be a place where people could come in, hang out, have a gluten free beer, gluten free snacks, and visit the brewery.

    Bierly Brewing Dedicated Gluten-free Menu

The original menu for their gluten-free brewery started with gluten-free soft pretzels. This became a fast fan favorite and was followed by many more amazing gluten-free foods on their menu, including breadsticks, cookies, and donuts. Bierly Brewing also has a variety of mustards that are gluten-free and used in their various foods. Amelia also shares how they came up with what to put on their gluten-free menu. In addition, Amelia has an interesting rotating dessert menu, and tells why the menu is rotated out regularly.

Brewing Gluten Free Beer with Bierly Brewing

I've never liked beer until I tried the brew that JP from Bierly Brewing creates! I'm excited to chat with him about brewing gluten-free beer on the Travel Gluten Free Podcast. JP has been brewing gluten-free beer using gluten-free ingredients since 2016. He researched how to malt gluten-free grains to use in his beers, but he decided to move toward recipe development and brewing.

Why JP Decided to Brew Gluten-free Beers

JP has celiac disease. He discovered this at the age of 26 when he met his partner Amelia, who had already been diagnosed with celiac disease. So, the main reason JP decided to do the gluten-free beer was that many of his wife's family members were gluten-free. JP had been experimenting for some time with gluten-free beer, so it turned out his beer was great, and everybody liked it, starting with his family.

The Brewing Process and Ingredients for Gluten-free Beer

JP uses honey, candy sugar, and rice syrup solids as part of his ingredients. He combines these with hops and gluten-free yeast. JP found out they could make an excellent pale ale, which ticked all the boxes for beer.

Besides, JP doesn't use any barley, wheat, or rye. He also doesn't use oats because there is a large swath of celiacs that still cannot have oats.

Discover how JP comes up with new ingredients for gluten-free beer. JP has sixteen years of experience brewing beer but still reads a lot to develop new beers. When reading, he is particularly interested in the history of the beer, why it was brewed, its ingredients, and the challenges faced.

Origin and Different Types of Beer

JP shares with us the different types of beers. Basically, most beers are defined by national origin. The three top ones are Germany and Austria, Central European, England and Belgian. However, with gluten-free beer, there is more freedom.

    Customer Favorites at Bierly Brewing

JP takes us through customers' favorite gluten-free beers. He also discloses his favorite and how two Bierly beers came to be named after his sons.

    JP's Recommended Gluten-free Destinations

Find out why JP recommends the Portland metro area in northwestern Oregon, Seattle, and the west coast area as a top destination for Gluten-free travelers. JP also shares his Gluten-free travel plans and what he is looking forward to experiencing in these places.

Gluten Free Travel Tips Part II

Today I’m delighted to host Ellen again as we share some top tips for gluten-free travel. Ellen started Gluten-free Vacations to help gluten free travelers plan their vacations to the Caribbean, Mexico, and Disney.

    Always Pack Gluten Free Snacks

Ellen once made the mistake of not packing gluten free snacks on one of her travels and could only find French fries as a gluten free option. It is important to pack snacks even if you think you will find gluten free food during your trip. We also talk more about the range of snacks to carry and how to pack them.

Take Gluten Free Translation Cards with You

Although you can use Google translate to make translation cards or explain to someone in another language what you need to eat, Google does not always do a great job on translation accuracy. Make sure to carry translation cards with you when you travel. You could contact the local chamber or embassy for assistance in finding someone to help you create a translation card in another language. We also share an app that you can use to pull up restaurant cards in this episode!

Talk to the Chef to Find Out What’s Gluten Free

Introduce yourself to the chef or the restaurant manager, and let them know your need for gluten free food is for medical reasons rather than a personal preference; besides asking the chef what gluten free foods they have, find out how they prepare food in the kitchen. For instance, if they have separate fryers to avoid cross-contamination or if they change their gloves before they prep your food.

Ask for a Microwave and Mini Fridge for Your Gluten-Free Food

Getting a microwave or mini-fridge is one of the most helpful elements when traveling and staying in a hotel or air. However, if you have a refrigerator with hotel food, make sure not to remove that food from the fridge in the hotel you are staying in and put yours in the refrigerator because you will be charged for using their food. Call the front desk to request another refrigerator for your gluten free food.

Notify Your Host of Your Gluten-Free Dietary Needs

Our final tip is on why calling your hosts, be it the resorts, restaurants, cruises, or airplanes, ahead of time and letting them know your dietary needs will make your vacation a better experience for you, your host, and your family or friends that you are traveling with on your adventure!

Gluten Free Travel Tips Part I

I'm stoked to chat with Ellen from Gluten-free Vacation on this episode of Travel Gluten Free Podcast about tips for making gluten-free travel easier. Ellen started Gluten-free Vacations in 2021 to help other travelers plan their vacations to the Caribbean, Mexico, and Disney. Following a diagnosis of Lyme disease and Sarcoidosis in 2018, Ellen decided to change her diet and go gluten-free. Ellen quickly realized how stressful eating out and traveling could be, which led her to start Gluten-free Vacations. Today, Ellen focuses on the Caribbean, Mexico, and Disney, which have excellent all-inclusive resorts that can make a vacation stress-free for someone with celiac disease.

Pack Gluten Free Snacks on Your Vacation

If you're ever in that situation where you don't have free food readily available, you can just grab something out of your backpack or purse. We will look at some great snacks you should carry for your trip.

Using Ziploc Bags to Store Gluten Free Food

It's essential to always have some resealable bags to restock if you encounter gluten-free food. Ziploc bags and resealable bags or containers can take things throughout the rest of your trip.

Gluten Free Translation Cards to Use at Restaurants

We will tell you why this is a must-have if you're going on international travel and when you really need it. How do you get personalized cards that can be translated into the native language of where you are traveling to? Why is this very important?

    Travel Insurance Policy Documents

Most people don't realize it, but medical insurance can be your lifesaver if you're traveling internationally. We will see why and why you shouldn't rely on just having it online. Ellen can also help in purchasing travel insurance. Everything from booking their resort to booking their transportation from the airport to the resort and back, and their travel insurance and excursions.

Gluten Free Gift Giving with Calli McPherson of William James Gifts

    Season 08 Episode 01

Gluten Free Gift Giving with Calli McPherson of William James Gifts

The act of giving a gift expresses how much we care and value someone. In today’s Travel Gluten-free Podcast, I’m excited to host Calli McPherson, the owner of William James Gifts, a gift store specializing in gluten-free food and gift baskets. Find out how Calli started her gluten-free gift store during the pandemic and the great line of gluten-free goods you can gift your favorite gluten-free person!

Opening her Gluten Free Gift Store

Calli shares her dream of opening a gift store that picked momentum after her diagnosis with Celiac. Being Celiac allowed Calli to see the need for a Gluten-free gift store as the gaps she found in the marketplace. For example, there wasn’t a gift basket shop or store that sold gluten-free products for those who were gluten intolerant or had a medical condition in which they couldn’t eat gluten.

Gluten Free Foods and Products at William James Gifts

Calli takes us through the expansive line of their products at William James Gifts. Other than being gluten-free, the products at William James Gifts cater to people with different dietary restrictions, such as Vegan and even those on keto or paleo diets.

Calli and her family taste-test all the food before carrying it into the store. She believes that trying out the products and foods before carrying them is essential. Then, if the food or gluten-free product passes the test and has her family’s seal of approval, she’ll proudly display the item and sell it in her store.

    Supporting Women-Owned Small Businesses

Calli also shares why she sources some products from women-owned small businesses. Besides supporting women-owned businesses, Calli talks about how she sources most of her products from companies that center around social responsibility.

Best Countries for Gluten Free Travel

    Traveling Abroad Gluten Free

When traveling outside the United States, you’re adding more challenges to eating safely depending on where you have decided to vacation; however; you can overcome these issues and throw down the gluten-free gauntlet with the following overseas travel advice!

What Country Should I Visit for My First Trip Abroad?

When you're gluten-free, there are definitely experiences that will excite and inspire you. However, you may know from experience that finding food may not be so "inspirational," especially if you have more than one food you're trying to avoid.

For your first overseas experience, I would definitely recommend trying out a country where many locals speak English, so you have less chance of being glutened. I’d also recommend flying to the country you want to visit and traveling via cruise, which lowers your chances of getting sick even more. You can easily skip eating lunch during the day when you are out galavanting around because of the sheer amount of food you will eat at other times during your cruise. Two of my favorites I would definitely recommend: London and Iceland.

Want to find out more about the best gluten-free cities and countries around the world for your next vacation? Then check out The Guide to Traveling Gluten Free, the best gluten-free travel guide for anyone who lives a gluten-free lifestyle and wants the freedom to travel safely once again!

Top Ten Gluten Free Cities in America

It’s so much easier to travel around when you know you can find great, gluten-free food that is safe to eat along your journey. Tune in to discover my favorite top ten gluten-free friendly cities to travel to in America.

Isn’t it frustrating when you travel for vacation only to find there are minimal options for you to eat? Does your level of anxiety go through the roof when you find yourself in a situation where you can’t safely eat at restaurants nearby? Do you find yourself having to eat a snack you brought while everyone else enjoys “real” food?

One of the deciding factors for the location I’m traveling to is the availability of safe, gluten-free, Celiac-friendly food. So what elements of a city lend that town to being gluten-free friendly? While there isn’t a “written in stone” order or process to find out which cities are more accommodating to our gluten-free community, cities that have the following characteristics usually have a better variety of safe food to eat for specialty diets such as Celiac:

    • College towns
    • Cities that value culture and art
    • Locations that are highly densely populated
    • Coastal towns
    • Anywhere in California
    • Cities that are older than 150 years

Want to find out more about the best gluten-free cities and countries around the world for your next vacation? Then check out The Guide to Traveling Gluten Free, the best gluten-free travel guide for anyone who lives a gluten-free lifestyle and wants the freedom to travel safely once again!

Backpacking Around the World with Katie Barbaro of Casual Ecstasy Podcast

Welcome to the Travel Gluten Free Podcast. Today, I have Katie Barbaro from the Casual Ecstacy Podcast. Katie is an occupational therapist, comedian, and up-and-coming author. She believes that life should be lived like an improv show, and hopes to help others awaken their potential.

    Solo Travelling the World

Katie is an extensive traveler. In 2018, she spent the year visiting Thailand, Iceland, England, France, the Netherlands, and other parts of Europe and Asia. She decided to leave her normal life behind because of her life coach, who identified many of her personal values. Katie asked herself, “What would feel the most me?”, and decided that travelling the world with no plan and only her intuition to rely on was the answer.

Katie did much of her traveling thanks to the Workaway platform, which allows volunteers to connect and live with host families in exchange for a few hours of work. Throughout her trip, Katie stayed with friends new and old, meeting many open-hearted people and volunteering at incredible places.

    Surrendering to the Present Moment

When travelling Asia, Katie found a different kind of relaxation in her body upon landing. There was a peacefulness in Asia that wasn’t present in Europe or the U.S.. In the West, we’re taught that being busy equals happiness. For Katie, travelling brings her into the present moment. She’s gone into many new and unique situations with the intention of learning and appreciating, as a lifelong student.

Katie talks about the spontaneity of solo travelling with an anecdote of her motorbike rental in Indonesia. She was never someone who would ride anything with two wheels before, but by pushing herself out of her comfort zone, she got to evolve her own idea of who she is. Through traveling, Katie has cultivated her intuition and learned how to be at home with herself, no matter where she is.

    Publishing Her First Book

Katie recently published her book, “Fed Up An Illustrative Guide to Food Freedom.” She hand-wrote and illustrated the book to document her recovery from disordered eating. The cartoon-based memoir focuses on her raw and honest experience with over-exercising, calorie-counting, and more.

Katie feels that the harmful pressures of diet culture in the U.S. are inescapable, and strongly believes in speaking out in order to demystify the taboo around eating disorders. If you have any kind of weird relationship with food, Katie says, this book is for you.

Listen in to hear about Katie’s mystery trip, the lessons she’s learned as a solo female traveller, and where she plans to go next.

Connect with Katie on Instagram and find her book on her website

Portable Gluten-Free Food Ideas for the Gluten Free Traveler

Welcome to the Travel Gluten Free Podcast. Today, I’m sharing some easy, portable gluten-free food ideas to bring with you on your next adventure. By the time this airs, I will have just gotten back from a cruise, and I’m excited to share my experience with you soon. But until then, have a few great, gluten-free tips for travelling.

What Kind of Gluten-Free Snacks to Travel With

Make sure to bring snacks that don’t have any kind of coating or chocolate that will melt and make a mess out of everything. Always check the labels for glaze, chocolate, or anything of the sort. I love granola bars from Lara, and there are plenty of great brands that are free from top allergens such as Yes! or Ka-Pop!. Other snacks that aren’t brand specific that I like are seaweed snacks, apple sauce packets (yes, just like the ones for toddlers) or fruit snacks and gummies that are all made up of pure, organic ingredients. Remember to always read the label before buying something new, and don’t trust something that’s advertised as GF unless it’s certified gluten-free.

What I Look for in a Hotel Room as a GF Traveller

I always make sure to get a hotel room with either a small kitchen or kitchenette, and at the very least a microwave or fridge. It makes it so much easier to snack at night, rather than going out, and is much more convenient when packing your own safe food and drinks.

Most places will generally have a fridge and microwave, but always make sure to check. One tip I’ve learned is that many hotels in Las Vegas don’t provide a fridge you can use, instead filling it with snacks they want you to pay for. But, you can call the front desk and have them bring you a refrigerator for all of your gluten-free goodies.

Where to Shop for Gluten Free Foods while Travelling

An unexpected way to find food while traveling is in HomeGoods. They have a surprisingly decent selection of GF snacks that I like to try before travelling, so that I know what I like beforehand. WinCo also has a great variety of allergen-free foods as reasonable prices.

Another tip is to go to Whole Foods and see what they offer there, and then check the product’s website to see if you can find the same thing for cheaper. Another gluten-free staple of mine is to bring cookies for dessert, since most restaurants don’t offer gluten-free dessert options.

Happy 30th Birthday to Our Sponsor Kinnikinnick!

Kinnikinnick is celebrating its 30th birthday and is offering Travel Gluten Free listeners a 10% discount when you use the code TravelGlutenFree at checkout!
