Lent 3: The Last, The Least, The Lost, and the Little.

Lent 3: The Last, The Least, The Lost, and the Little.

    Lent Week 3-
Join us for Bishop Andrew Williams' sermon:
The Last, The Least, The Lost, and the Little.

Andrew shares a timely message for the church in every season.
Jesus is encouraging us to stand with the marginalized, to stand in the void and allow Him to reconnect the last, the least, the lost, and the little with God's promises and His unending love.

We understand that the church is not a "select circle of the immaculate", rather it is a mobile field hospital to minister the healing love of Jesus to the last, the least, the lost, and the little. Whether we know it, or our neighbors know it or not, Jesus is at work actively in each one of our lives.
Many people in our communities have given up on God, have given up on mercy, they believe there's no redemption for them; and just like us, so many people need their wounds healed. The church is the continuing outworking of Jesus Christ. The church is who we are, what we do, more than what we "say". We are called to heal the wounds of the heart, to open doors, to set the captives free, to stand in the void and to share the good news, that God is GOOD. That through the cross of Jesus, God forgives all, that God is our loving father, that Jesus is right here and He is faithful.

    Lent 2: Crawling, Walking, Running

Join us for Matt Vaselkiv's sermon:
    Crawling, Walking, Running:
Learning to Grow Completely Into Who God Knows We Can Be

As we continue our journey through Lent, a season of reflection, Matt takes a wonderful look at Hebrews 12, reminding us that God has something better in mind for each one of us. Looking at the great cloud of witnesses who have come before us, both in scripture, throughout history, along with those in our own lives. Encouraging us to keep dreaming and pressing on towards what God has for us, even when we feel like we can't go on.

Lent is the perfect time to reflect on the areas of our life that God is lovingly nudging us towards. Matt reminds us to run your own race at your own pace.
Each of us is called to run as we are able. Sometimes a steady pace, sometimes a sprint, sometimes a stumble or fall, sometimes a marathon; yet always moving forward with God in every area of our lives, always inviting the peaceful harvest of right living that the book of Hebrews encourages.

What is The Story of Lent?

What is The Story of Lent?

Join us for Deacon Jen Keifer's sermon:
What is The Story of Lent?

We are creatures of story.Every culture around the globe centers on "storytelling". Each of us are lovingly created to live out a particular story of our own, in a particular time and place, all of our stories are held in God's grand act of God's story.

Jen shares a fascinating message reminding us of our own stories, God's story, and that especially during the season of Lent, that many things can be true at the same time; we are more sinful and flawed than we could have imagined, and yet we are more deeply loved than we could ever imagine. A reminder from St. Paul, "That you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge..."

    The Transfiguration of Jesus

    The Transfiguration of Jesus

Join us for Mother Wendy Dixon's sermon:
    The Transfiguration of Jesus

In this moment on Mount Tabor (a hill in Israel),
Jesus was shifting his focus off of the miracles his disciples had witnessed Jesus doing, and onto WHO HE IS. Unlike Moses, who saw a burning bush, who's face shined with God's glory; unlike Paul who saw a bright light that blinded him on the road to Damascus; Jesus was transfigured in this moment and ablaze with the supernatural brightness of heaven.
They were seeing the Divine, otherworldly, Jesus in all his glory.

With grace and kindness, Wendy brilliantly walks us through this important and powerful story of the Transfiguration of Jesus. May God transform each one of us and make us ready and eager to grow in love for God and for one another.

Epiphany - The Presentation of Jesus

Join us for Cn Tim Clayton's sermon:
Epiphany - The Presentation of Jesus

In the past months we've walked through a season of waiting in the darkness hoping for the light (Advent), a season of celebrating (Christmas), and the last few weeks through the season of Epiphany wherein we look at the light and bask in the light and on the Feast of the Presentation, that journey comes to a close. In a fascinating sermon, Tim looks at how Luke's gospel has bookended the story of the incarnation through the presentation with this simple response from both Mary and from Simeon. So that we might also have the hope to respond to God with, "Here I am, let it be done to me..."

Epiphany - An Encounter With God, Experiencing the Wonderful Authority of Jesus

What if rather than reading the stories of Jesus as "observers" we could imagine an encounter with Jesus wherein we ourselves experience the authority and wonder of Jesus. If we could learn to do this we would be seeing it for what it's meant for. We could have a whole new life. For some of us we need to rehabilitate our understanding of the authority of Jesus.
What if we could understand that Jesus would rather use his authority FOR us than ON us. Join us for this wonderful sermon from Tim.

Where are we? What is God doing? As we look at the gospel of Mark and the story of John the baptist and Jesus.

Jesus shares four clear statements: Now is the time, the Kingdom of God is near, repent, and believe in the good news. Don't lose the now, don't miss this moment, don't miss what God is doing in our midst today, while looking forward to the good things to come.

Epiphany - The Magi and The End of National Gods

Epiphany - The Magi and The End of National Gods

Join us for Cn Tim Clayton's sermon:
January 6th - Epiphany - The Magi and The End of National Gods

In this fascinating study on Epiphany, Tim looks at the journey of the Magi and the powerful and wonderfully unique beauty of the story of Jesus.

One of the key things the gospel teaches us is that Jesus Christ is the end of "national gods".

Throughout history different peoples and nations have their "god" and they will hire a "prophet" to tell them that "their god" is gonna beat the other "god" on the battlefield. But Jesus is the end of national gods. A beautiful paradox: He's the end of national gods because Jesus is both bigger and smaller than them. They don't get born as vulnerable infants who will die. Jesus is both the "logos" (the creative word through whom all things were created, incarnate in nature), and born completely vulnerable and giving himself in self-giving love to every one of us, in every nation, tribe and tongue throughout all time. God for the WHOLE COSMOS, God for the ENTIRETY of All That IS.

Paul says in Ephesians 3, "Of this gospel I have become a servant according to the gift of God’s grace that was given to me by the working of his power. Although I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given to me to bring to the Gentiles the news of the boundless riches of Christ, and to make everyone see what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God who created all things..."

This is a beautiful sermon weaving in the stories of JRR Tolkien and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. that help to reveal the beautiful story of Jesus.

Advent 4: Loved and Not Forgotten

Advent 4: Loved and Not Forgotten

    Advent Week Four: Love
Join us for Canon Tim Clayton's sermon for Advent Week 4, Loved and Not Forgotten

This week we look at the beautiful story of Mary and the prayer known as the Magnificat. God has moved, Mary rejoices and declares that we have been remembered,  "the Lord has helped His servant Israel remembering His mercy, as He spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and his descendants through all ages..."

We know from history that the folks who lived in the area where Mary lived were quite poor; the region was occupied by a foreign power; she was to be in an arranged marriage that was probably not a big "romance", and that life had not been easy for them in any manner of speaking, and yet they had been waiting for God to move in their lives.

Her response when the angel comes to her is openness, vulnerability, complete devotion and trust in God. In our own lives there are those challenges that have been hard to "wait" through. But God has remembered and not forgotten you.

    Bethlehem, The House of Bread

    Bethlehem, The House of Bread

Join us for this fascinating and inspiring sermon from Cn Tim Clayton.
God now enters the story, walking through all the phases and challenges of our human life and experience so that He could identify fully with us.
What happens when God sows the seed that's going to take down empires? Things can get crazy.
Tim walks us through the Christmas story as Mary and Joseph travel to Bethlehem (which means 'The House of Bread"). They travel to the House of Bread because The Living Bread is going to be born. They go because the Bread of Life is going to sow His yeast into the fabric of history. They go because the one who gives daily bread, the very essence of being, is going to be born.

Jesus knows the places in which you long to be remembered.

The Good news on the Advent Sunday of Joy, is that when we fully move to Christ,  we discover that in our depths, something in us wants to always rejoice, constantly pray, and in everything give thanks, for this is God's will for us. So we pray that God would help us to wait and listen, and be full of joy as He draws near to us, His bride.

    Advent 2: Prophets and Peace

    Advent 2: Prophets and Peace

    Advent Week Two: Peace
Listen to Cn Tim Clayton's sermon Advent 2: Prophets and Peace

In Hebrew the word for peace is "shalom" which can mean "wholeness, delight, universal flourishing". Most of us would agree that this world needs peace at every level.

The second week of Advent is traditionally known as the week of Peace. The "peace" candle is lit, and at the same time the lectionary scripture readings can come from various "prophets", ranging from Isaiah to John the Baptist...and though the scriptures are full of prophetic words about 'peace' and 'coming peace' and the 'Prince of Peace', sometimes we don't "feel" their messages of peace within our hearts as we are navigating through some of the troubles of our lives.

This week Tim shares some insights about the message of the prophets that bring us peace; Inner peace, Social peace, Ultimate peace, and Shalom/Wholeness. The prophets are calling us to open up, to let Jesus in, so that deep peace can begin in our hearts. Let peace begin with me.

    Advent 1: Hold Onto Hope

    Advent 1: Hold Onto Hope

    Advent Week One: Hope
Listen to Cn Tim Clayton's sermon Advent 1: Hold Onto Hope.

Join us as Tim leads us into an insightful look at Jesus' words in the gospel of Mark 13, reminding us to keep watch and to be ready for his return.

How do we get excited about the hope of God coming to his people, especially in the face of so much adversity?

What do we do when we hit scriptures that are difficult? We try to approach them with humility and openness in our hearts. We try to look at it through 3 essential lenses: what is the context leading up to the difficult passage both before and after; we try to understand the 'genre' of the text; and how it fits in with scripture overall and what we know to be true about God as we know Him.

Jesus tells us He is coming back, and that is the single best reason to believe. Did he trick anyone? Did he lie? Was he not honest with his followers? We hold onto this hope because he promised he would. We don't know how but we know who.

Rejoice, anticipate, expect, hope. We desire for God to grow in us a hope so great that we could be freed by it, that we might live into your image of self-giving love.

The word “Eucharist” is a transliteration of the Greek word eucharistia, which is itself a translation of the Hebrew word berekah. All three words have the meaning of thanksgiving, or praise for the wonderful works of God. For the Eastern Orthodox, Eucharist is "living in thanksgiving".

As we enter this final study on Thanksgiving-Eucharist, Canon Tim Clayton shares some fascinating insights into the last supper, and the power and beauty of self-giving love. Showing us co-suffering/self-giving love, Jesus walked voluntarily into his suffering and released into the world the only thing that you 'get more of' when you 'give more of':
    Love - self-giving love.
The more of it we give, the more of it returns; the more love we give, the more it grows.

When we come to the table together to receive the bread and wine, Jesus is with us and He's giving himself to us represented in the bread and wine saying, "I want to reconnect myself to you"

For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Anyone who eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him. Join us as Tim shares a bit about the history of bread in the scriptures and why it was so important for Jesus to share with the people in John's gospel, “I tell you the solemn truth.... my Father is giving you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is the one who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” So they said to him, “Sir, give us this bread all the time! ... I am the bread of life..."

" For the bread of God is the one who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world."

Why bread and wine? These are core foods that actually speak of more than themselves.

When we come with our hands open, we are saying "there's nothing I could pay for this gift"...When we come to receive the bread with our hands open we are also saying, "you gave yourself for me, and I also offer myself to you..."  Augustine put it in a beautiful way: when we receive the body of Christ, we become the body of Christ.

Mako shares insights on our own longing for community. Contending with what "whiteness" has meant and learning to embrace "ethnicity" so that we can get Christian faith back in a new way.

Historically, Anglo Saxon Christian leaders abolished slavery in the 800s, again in the 900s, and in 1102 they finally succeeded for a season. William Wilberforce drew on this past history when he AGAIN spoke out against slavery in his ministry in England in the 1800s.

Where does our longing for community lead us?
It points us to our own need to mature, and then to our own need for Jesus... Jesus calls us to hope for a community founded on Him, that is partly now, and partially coming in the future, because we are not yet perfected...Our hope in Jesus allows us to travel together now...

We persevere in truth telling, and we identify with the people of God around the world in every nation, tribe and tongue; and in all of our Christian history. We honor all the faiths, not just the latest ones trotted out by the American church.

Always remembering that Jesus is the foundation.
He has a new humanity for all humanity.

We share all things on this planet, and we share one another...

    Journal questions:
At one point Mako mentioned how “whiteness” [and we might add “blackness”] are social realities invented to justify the Atlantic slave trade, displacing the natural and not-inherently-unhealthy recognition of different ethnicities. How might this realization help “white folks” realize the depths of the social ill here overall, without taking naming “whiteness” as a problem as a personal criticism?

Mako asserted that historical entanglements (intractable or massive injustices) are:

    1. Important to face and deal with,

    2. Best faced in the context of working towards the future Jesus has accomplished and will bring.

How do you feel about this?

One thing I reflected on during Mako’s sermon was that there is much of the history of our nation which we are not taught (at least I know I wasn’t, and this seems to be generally the case). This is not a happy thought, but there it is. This realization made me grateful for God’s love and patience and perseverance. Is this reality difficult to balance with your faith?

    Connecting Series 6

    Connecting Series 6

Join us as we continue with the sixth part of this series on connecting. Connecting with God. Connecting with Community. Connecting with Creation.

Connecting to Creation: learning to live in the place that God put us.
Part of what it means to be human is to connect to the Good Creation that He made for us. We are created by God and woven into the gift of His beautiful creation, and that allows us to live within our limits as a people created by God. Good things grow, it's inherent in the nature of "goodness". We are responsible to care for the Earth and all of creation around us.
Is Jesus in this? Is Christ Himself in this idea?
Where do we find Jesus in the idea of Connecting to Creation?

In this fascinating sermon, Tim looks at the story of Jesus' baptism and his journey into the wilderness fasting among the wild beasts. In the Baptism of Jesus we see the Holy Spirit hovering over the water as a dove, as Jesus is coming out of the water. The Orthodox church has always seen this moment as God re-setting creation. Hovering over the water, even as the Spirit hovered over the water in the creation story of Genesis.

    Saint Francis

    Saint Francis

Join us as Canon Tim Clayton shares about Saint Francis
Once a year the church calendar draws our attention to Saint Francis.

    What makes a saint?
Why celebrate a saint in the first place?
Join us as Cn Tim shares an insightful and intriguing sermon on the story of Saint Francis and the celebration of the Blessing of Animals....
Coming from a time when the church had lost itself, had become rigid and less than vibrant. The story of St. Francis begins at such a time.
Tim kindly shares how we can learn from the model of St. Francis, learning to be more vulnerable, more open with God and one another, depending on Jesus and leaning on his love.
