    237: John Brooks for Congress

    237: John Brooks for Congress
John Brooks was the first black graduate from the University of Montana, where he studied ecology, and he has always had the passion to help people and the environment. He's protected US airways as an Air Marshall, and worked with US Customs and Homeland Security to prevent the unlawful trafficking of live exotic wildlife. He's spent 30 years with the US Department of Interior from California to Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, Texas, Illinois, Ohio, Virginia, Washington DC and New Jersey.

John has also held the titles, Refuge Manager, Wildlife Inspector, Special Agent, Computer Forensics Specialist and augmented Federal Air Marshal. Although he retired in 2008 as a civil servant, he's continued to stress the importance of education through his work as an author, filmmaker, musician and community volunteer and believes education is the key to a healthy society.

Although congressional candidates have already been decided for this election year, John comes on the podcast to discuss some of the ways we can contribute to a less-cruel, and more loving environment, not only to benefit people, but animals as well.
John and I also take a few minutes to discuss the issues at hand regarding the police force, the Black Lives Matter movement, and everything that has lead up to our current movement.

*NOTE* I personally try to keep my political views off of podcasts, with the intent of focusing on veganism, rather than causing division in those that don't identify with political parties at hand. I've provided a platform for those to speak about veganism, and align with their views in effort to do so. My intent is not to promote or disqualify any political party, but rather to promote the areas that align with veganism.*

    236: Yoga is Vegan

    236: Yoga is Vegan
Holly Skodis watched her dad literally end his life through the nutritional choices he had made throughout his life. Shortly after, she noticed she was having higher cholesterol and blood pressure and started making the connection with food and health.
Around the same time, Holly started her Yoga Teacher Training, which led to her research on the typical diets of yogis. On a compassionate level, Holly made the connection between spirituality and what was on her plate.

Today, Holly believes wholly in not only a vegan lifestyle for compassionate reasons, but a Whole Food Plant-Based diet for health reasons.

    235: The Wake Up Experience

    235: The Wake Up Experience
The Wake Up Experience is composed of two friends and artists, Evan Bane and Ryz. Evan grew up around Hip-Hop and Gospel Music and started rapping at a young age. Ryz is a singer, producer and happens to be certified in Advanced Spiritual Psychology.

But, their lives weren't always this way. At one point in his life, Ryz found himself homeless, with a food addiction, and living an overall unhealthy life. At one point, he decided he needed to make a change.

Now, years after Ryz and Evan met in college, they create music together as The Wake Up Experience. Throughout their journeys of struggles and accomplishments, both of them found veganism, which shifted some of their creative experiences.

The Wake Up Experience has grown to a point where the guys have focused on how to be more loving and compassionate, and how to spread those messages through their music.

In this podcast, we dive deep into race, ethnicity and several other perceived inequalities that take place in our world today, and how all of us can have more compassion for others!

Bonus: At the end of the track, Ryz and Evan give us a sneak peak of their new song, Nu Human and invite you to be a part of their music video!

    234: Fiber Fueled

    234: Fiber Fueled
Dr. Will Bulsiewicz has been obsessed with healing people (and their guts) with a fiber-fueled diet. He went to med school at Georgetown School of Medicine, trained in medicine at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and gastroenterology at The University of North Carolina Hospitals, then got his Masters of Science in Clinical Investigation. He also holds a nutrition certificate from Cornell University and is board-certified in Internal Medicine and gastroenterology.

Despite all of Dr. B's accomplishments, his personal story experience was what taught him even more. Throughout his journey, he has lost 45 pounds, started feeling better than he ever had, and started applying what he learned from his own body, to those of his patients.

In this episode, Dr. Will Bulsiewicz shares his personal health journey and gives us a sneak peak of what to expect from his newly published book, Fiber Fueled, which not so surprisingly ended up on the New York Best Seller's list shortly after its release! Considering that a WHOPPING 97% of Americans are not getting the minimum daily recommended amount of fiber in their diets, chances are, this book's for you!

    232: Scratch House

    232: Scratch House

Tony Howe is Roy Elam's right hand man at Donna Jean in San Diego. He's also the founder and creator of Scratch House; a local artisanal vegan cheese, charcuterie and sauce company that's always pushing the culinary limits!

Tony's love for cooking started when he was younger; his dad was in the Marine Corps, which didn't allow him to be at home with his family as much as he would've liked. Because of this, Tony started watching cooking shows and learning how to cook for his family.

Today, Tony has almost obsessed over perfecting the techniques and recipes for his vegan meats and cheeses, which are now being used in several San Diego restaurants and pop-ups.

In this episode, Tony talks about the science behind creating the perfect vegan cheese, and how his methods have changed over time, and with time (with fermentation).

    231: Victims of the Coronavirus

    231: Victims of the Coronavirus

Yi Ping Lai grew up in China and explains the connection between the over-population of homeless dogs and the dog meat trade. She tells her heartwarming story of how she grew up viewing dogs as a threat in China, and how she overcame her fear when she moved to America.

Today, Yi Ping is vegan and the founder of World of Angels Foundation; the US-based non-profit dedicated to alleviating the suffering of homeless companion animals in China by funding existing partner sanctuaries, establishing new sanctuaries, and ending the cruelty of the meat trade in China. Now, with the recent outbreak of the Coronavirus, or COVID-19, approximately 50,000 companion animals have been stranded in homes with no food or water due to travel restrictions and quarantine of their "owners". Yi is working hard to provide food and water for these animals, or place them in forever homes before it's too late.

After the quarantine is lifted, Yi Ping and her team will go to China to rescue as many dogs as they can, to place them into sanctuaries and safe homes. 230: Bad Jesus

    230: Bad Jesus

Alexander Bvck is a sober animal rights activist, triathlete and musician, but things weren't always this way. Alex grew up in Northern Los Angeles and did a lot of acting as a kid which allowed him to live a much different life than most children his age. Looking back on his life, he realized that he may have developed some personality traits during this time that may have influenced some of his actions later in life.

Alex was exposed to veganism and vegetarianism in the punk scene as a teen, and as 16 years old, decided to give up all meat. At one point in his early adulthood, he went back to eating animals, and when he came to a point where he wanted to stop, he dealt with the same sort of addiction and peer pressure associated with his consumption of alcohol or other substances.

After watching Okja, Alex went vegetarian over night.

Tune in to hear Alexander's entire story, including what he continues to do to fight for the animals today, how he maintains his sobriety and sanity, and where you can hear his band "Bad Jesus" play!

    225: The Plant Remedy

    225: The Plant Remedy

Chef Bailey Ruskus, also known as "Chef Bai" comes from a long line of butchers, and her grandfather was a chef. Her background greatly influenced her love for creating recipes and sharing food with her family. This passion led her to culinary school, $100,000 in debt and the "skills" to break down whole animals and cook their meat; none of which serves her much purpose today.

Since Bai was a young teen, she suffered from horrific female symptoms from heavy bleeding, to cramping, to sharp abdominal pains. Later in life, after many tests and prescriptions, she discovered she had endometriosis. Through her own research and switching to a plant-based diet, Chef Bai was able to cure herself and live a normal life, free of endometriosis symptoms!

Sadrah has never actually eaten meat. Mike was in the punk scene, where "compassion to all" was a popular mantra.
