Unveiling the Genetic Mysteries of Black People: How HBCUs are Leading the Charge for Health Equity

Unveiling the Genetic Mysteries of Black People: How HBCUs are Leading the Charge for Health Equity

Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are taking on a leading role in studying the genetic variants that affect Black people. This work is important because Black people have a higher risk of certain diseases, such as sickle cell anemia, hypertension, and diabetes. By studying the genetics of Black people, researchers can identify new genetic variants that are associated with these diseases, develop new therapies, and improve the health of Black communities. HBCUs are well-positioned to conduct this research because they have a deep understanding of the unique health needs of Black populations and have access to a large population of Black research participants. HBCUs are also investing in research infrastructure and training the next generation of Black scientists. This work is helping to improve the health of Black communities and to empower Black people to take control of their own health.

HBCUs are conducting a variety of research projects on the genetics of Black people. Some of these projects include:

    • Identifying genetic variants that are associated with diseases that disproportionately affect Black people, such as sickle cell anemia, hypertension, and diabetes.

    • Developing new therapies for diseases that disproportionately affect Black populations.

    • Studying the impact of social and environmental factors on the health of Black people.

HBCUs are engaging with Black communities in a number of ways to ensure that research is conducted in a culturally sensitive and respectful manner. These ways include:

    • Involving community members in all aspects of the research process

    • Conducting research in community settings

    • Using culturally appropriate language and materials

    • Obtaining informed consent from participants

    • Protecting the privacy of participants

The future of HBCU-led genetic research is bright. HBCUs are well-positioned to continue to make significant contributions to the field of genetics. With continued support, HBCUs will be able to identify new genetic variants, develop new therapies, and improve the health of Black communities.

The Legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen and the Youth Flight Program

The Legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen and the Youth Flight Program

The Tuskegee Airmen stand as a towering symbol of African-American achievement and resilience in the face of systemic discrimination and adversity. Their story is not just one of overcoming the odds; it's a testament to the indomitable spirit of those who dared to dream big and prove their detractors wrong. As the first African-American military aviators in the United States Armed Forces, these brave men fought two wars: one against external enemies abroad during World War II and another against racism and segregation at home. Their legacy continues to inspire generations, serving as a beacon of courage, excellence, and patriotism.

The Origins of the Tuskegee Airmen

The Tuskegee Airmen were part of an experimental program by the U.S. Army Air Corps to train African Americans to fly and maintain combat aircraft. The program was established at Tuskegee Institute, Alabama, in 1941, partly due to civil rights organizations and the Black press advocating for the inclusion of African Americans in the military aviation programs. Despite the skepticism and prejudice from some military and civilian quarters, the Tuskegee Airmen went on to prove themselves as one of the most highly respected fighter groups during the war, flying thousands of missions with distinction and bravery.

The Legacy Lives On: Youth Flight Programs

The spirit of the Tuskegee Airmen lives on today through various youth flight programs across the country, particularly the ones held at the Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site at Moton Field in Tuskegee, Alabama. These programs aim to introduce young African Americans and other youths to aviation and aeronautics, fostering an interest in careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields.

One notable program is the Tuskegee Airmen Youth Flight Academy, which provides a comprehensive educational experience, including flight training, ground school, and leadership development. This initiative not only honors the legacy of the original Tuskegee Airmen but also opens new horizons for young people, encouraging them to reach for the skies in their aspirations and achievements.

    A Continuing Inspiration

The Tuskegee Airmen's legacy is a powerful reminder of what can be accomplished with determination, skill, and the courage to challenge the status quo. The youth flight programs inspired by their story play a crucial role in nurturing the next generation of leaders, innovators, and aviators. By learning about the challenges and triumphs of the Tuskegee Airmen, young people can draw strength and inspiration from their heritage, understanding that they, too, can overcome obstacles and achieve greatness.

In a world still grappling with issues of inequality and discrimination, the Tuskegee Airmen's story remains ever relevant, encouraging all of us to fight for justice and equality while pursuing our dreams with unwavering determination. Their legacy is not just about the past; it's a guiding light for the future, illuminating a path toward a world where everyone has the opportunity to soar to new heights.

Georgia's Redistricting Revolution: How a Federal Judge's Ruling Could Shake Up the State's Political Landscape

Georgia's Redistricting Revolution: How a Federal Judge's Ruling Could Shake Up the State's Political Landscape

In 2023, Georgia's congressional and state legislative districts were redrawn after a federal judge ruled that the current maps violated the Voting Rights Act. The new maps were drawn by a special session of the Georgia General Assembly, and they are expected to have a significant impact on the state's political landscape.

The redistricting of Georgia's congressional and state legislative districts in 2023 could have a significant impact on the Black population. The new maps create an additional majority-Black congressional district in the Atlanta metropolitan area, and they also make changes to a number of other districts. These changes could make it easier for Black voters to elect representatives who share their values and priorities.

For example, the new maps make it more difficult for Republicans to win seats in several suburban districts that have large Black populations. This could lead to an increase in the number of Black Democrats in the Georgia General Assembly. Additionally, the new maps give Democrats a better chance of winning seats in rural areas with significant Black populations. This could also lead to an increase in the number of Black Democrats in the Georgia General Assembly.

The redistricting of Georgia's congressional and state legislative districts could also have a positive impact on the Black community in other ways. For example, it could lead to increased investment in Black communities, as elected officials become more accountable to Black voters. Additionally, it could lead to more opportunities for Black people to participate in the political process, as they become more likely to see representatives who reflect their interests.

Overall, the redistricting of Georgia's congressional and state legislative districts is a positive development for the Black community. The new maps could make it easier for Black voters to elect representatives who share their values and priorities, and they could also lead to increased investment in Black communities and more opportunities for Black people to participate in the political process.

Here are some specific examples of how the redistricting of Georgia's congressional and state legislative districts could benefit the Black community:

    • Increased funding for education, healthcare, and other social programs in Black communities.

    • More Black people appointed to positions in state government and on corporate boards.

    • More Black-owned businesses receiving contracts from the state government.

    • More Black students attending state colleges and universities.

    • More Black people voting in elections.

These are just a few examples of the potential benefits of the redistricting of Georgia's congressional and state legislative districts for the Black community. The full impact of the redistricting will not be known for several years, but it is clear that the new maps could have a significant positive impact on the lives of Black Georgians.

Can Prisoners Buy Their Way Out of Prison with Their Organs?

Can Prisoners Buy Their Way Out of Prison with Their Organs?

In January 2023, two Democratic representatives in Massachusetts proposed a bill that would allow prisoners to reduce their sentences by up to one year in exchange for donating bone marrow or an organ. The bill was designed to address two problems: the shortage of organ donors in the United States, and the racial disparities in the criminal justice system.

Proponents of the bill argued that it would give prisoners a second chance to make a positive contribution to society, and that it would help to save lives. They also argued that the bill would be voluntary, and that prisoners would not be coerced into donating organs.

Opponents of the bill raised a number of concerns, including:

    • That the bill would exploit poor and vulnerable prisoners.

    • That the bill would create a two-tiered system of justice, where wealthy prisoners could afford to buy their way out of prison early.

    • That the bill would be ethically questionable, as it would allow prisoners to profit from their own bodies.

The bill was met with mixed reactions from the public, and it was ultimately withdrawn by the sponsors. However, the proposal has reignited the debate about whether or not prisoners should be allowed to donate organs in exchange for reduced sentences.

It is important to note that there are a number of ethical concerns surrounding the proposal. For example, some people argue that it is wrong to allow prisoners to profit from their own bodies, or that it would be exploitative to target poor and vulnerable prisoners for organ donation. Others argue that such a policy would create a two-tiered system of justice, where wealthy prisoners could afford to buy their way out of prison early.

Despite these concerns, there are also some potential benefits to the proposal. For example, it could help to address the shortage of organ donors in the United States, and it could give prisoners a second chance to make a positive contribution to society. Additionally, some people argue that allowing prisoners to donate organs could help to reduce recidivism rates.

Ultimately, the decision of whether or not to allow prisoners to donate organs in exchange for reduced sentences is a complex one. There are a number of ethical and practical concerns to consider, and there is no easy answer.

Meta vs. the States: A Landmark Lawsuit Over Social Media Addiction

Meta vs. the States: A Landmark Lawsuit Over Social Media Addiction

On October 24, 2023, 41 US states sued Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, alleging that its social media platforms are addicting and harmful to young people's mental health. The lawsuit alleges that Meta designed its products to keep users engaged for as long as possible, even though it knew that this could have negative consequences for their mental well-being.

The lawsuit specifically cites a number of features of Facebook and Instagram that it says are addictive, including infinite scrolling, the use of likes and comments to validate users, and the way that the platforms algorithms are designed to keep users hooked. The lawsuit also alleges that Meta has misled the public about the dangers of its platforms, and has knowingly induced young children and teenagers into addictive and compulsive social media use.

The lawsuit is seeking a number of remedies, including:

    • An injunction requiring Meta to change its business practices to make its platforms safer for young people.

    • A declaration that Meta has violated consumer protection laws.

    • Financial damages to compensate states for the costs of treating young people who have been harmed by Meta's products.

Meta has denied the allegations in the lawsuit, and has said that it is committed to protecting the well-being of its users. The company has also said that it has taken a number of steps to make its platforms safer for young people, such as limiting the amount of time that users under the age of 18 can spend on the platform, and providing more resources for parents to help their children use social media safely.

The lawsuit is still in its early stages, and it is unclear how long it will take to resolve. However, the case could have significant implications for Meta and other social media companies, and could force them to make changes to their products and business practices.

The outcome of this lawsuit could have a major impact on the way that social media companies are regulated and how they operate. If the states are successful, it could set a precedent for future lawsuits against Meta and other social media companies, and could lead to new regulations governing the way that these platforms are designed and used.

Showdowns and Boycotts - DeSantis' Policies Prompt Backlash

Showdowns and Boycotts - DeSantis' Policies Prompt Backlash

Governor Ron DeSantis has faced growing backlash and economic boycotts in response to controversial policies in Florida, including the "Don't Say Gay" bill that restricts classroom lessons on sexual orientation and gender identity. Major corporations like Disney have condemned these laws, pausing film productions and operations in the state. Advocacy groups have called for tourism boycotts, with estimates of potential losses up to $7 billion. Entertainment figures and artists have canceled Florida shows and events. Companies like Citigroup are halting relocations to the state. The collective economic pressure aims to protest DeSantis' measures seen as discriminatory against LGBTQ individuals and harmful to Florida's business interests. Legal challenges argue the policies are unconstitutional.

The NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) has issued statements criticizing Florida's "Don't Say Gay" bill and other policies under Governor Ron DeSantis. Here are some key points the NAACP has made:

    • The NAACP President Derrick Johnson condemned the bill, saying it "follows a dangerous and divisive campaign led by Governor DeSantis attacking Black History Month, critical race theory, and now the fundamental human rights of the LGBTQ+ community."
    • They argue the bill perpetuates dangerous discrimination against LGBTQ youth in Florida schools.
    • The NAACP sees these policies as part of a broader agenda to stoke racial divisions and erase marginalized groups from schools. They contend DeSantis is spreading a dangerous political narrative.
    • They have called for corporations, lawmakers and civil rights defenders to take direct action against policies like the "Don't Say Gay" bill that they believe harm young people.
    • The NAACP pledged to advocate for the dignity, wellbeing and protection of all students in Florida, especially those within the LGBTQ community.
    • They urged parents, educators, corporations and lawmakers to listen to marginalized youth and oppose legislation that denies human rights.

Overall, the NAACP maintains that bills targeting protected classes like LGBTQ youth promote intolerance and run contrary to the goal of providing students with a high quality public education. They see a direct link between these measures and the broader struggle for civil rights.

Black Stars: The Untold Stories of Space Exploration

Black Stars: The Untold Stories of Space Exploration

In recent years, there has been an increased effort to expand diversity and representation in space exploration. History was made when Keisha Schahaff and her daughter Anastatia Mayers became the first Caribbean women to travel to space. Schahaff, originally from the island nation of Antigua and Barbuda, won a coveted seat on a Virgin Galactic spaceflight through a fundraising competition organized by Space for Humanity. She chose to bring her 18-year-old daughter Anastatia, who is currently studying philosophy and physics at Aberdeen University in the UK.

The mother-daughter pair blasted off on an epic journey to the edge of space aboard Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo Unity. During several minutes of weightlessness, they marveled at breathtaking views of Earth against the blackness of space. Their groundbreaking flight inspired people across the Caribbean and proved that the dream of space travel is attainable for women from diverse backgrounds. Schahaff and Mayers showed the world that the future of space exploration lies in the hands of empowered women who dare to dream big.

"The fact that I am here, the first to travel to space from Antigua, shows that space really is becoming more accessible. I know I will be changed by my experience, and I hope I will be able to share that energy and inspire the people around me — in my role as a life coach, a mother and as an ambassador for our beautiful planet." Keisha Schahaff

Teaching the Whole Truth: Why Whitewashing History is Dangerous

Teaching the Whole Truth: Why Whitewashing History is Dangerous

In recent years, there has been growing concern that American history is being whitewashed in various ways that downplay the contributions and struggles of people of color. Critics argue that important narratives are being distorted from textbooks to monuments to movies. For example, some textbooks downplay the brutality of slavery or gloss over the systemic oppression of minorities. Certain movies have been accused of casting white actors in roles that were historically people of color.

Additionally, many Confederate monuments erected during the Jim Crow era remain standing, which some view as celebrating white supremacy. There are also debates around preserving the plantation homes of slaveowners versus memorializing sites of racial injustice. Those who argue against whitewashing contend these practices perpetuate a dangerous myth that America has always been just and equitable for all. They believe students should learn an accurate account of systemic racism and marginalization. However, some opponents accuse these efforts of being biased or exaggerating past wrongs. The complex debate continues on how to best portray history in a way that acknowledges diverse experiences and perspectives.

We must teach our children the full, unvarnished truth about our history, even the ugly parts so that we can learn from it and create a more just future.

From Podcast to Plate: Isaac Jasper's Vision for Community Care

From Podcast to Plate: Isaac Jasper's Vision for Community Care

Isaac Jasper is a dedicated activist and podcaster who is committed to supporting his community. As the host of the Indigenous Nightmare Podcast, Isaac provides a platform to discuss and promote pan-Africanist and communist ideals. Through his podcast, he aims to raise awareness and empower marginalized groups.

Isaac's activism extends beyond his podcast - he is currently working to provide free meals to those in need in his community. To facilitate this, Isaac is growing microgreens, which are nutrient-dense baby plants that can be harvested quickly. Growing microgreens allows Isaac to produce fresh, healthy ingredients to incorporate into meals. It's an efficient and sustainable way to supplement food supplies.

Providing completely free meals is no small endeavor, but it demonstrates Isaac's spirit of generosity and care for his community. In a world of injustice and inequality, Isaac hopes to make a real difference through grassroots mutual aid and solidarity. His microgreens garden is just one component of this broader mission.

Through his podcast and food justice initiatives, Isaac Jasper exemplifies the type of ground-up activism and community-building that can lead to real change. His commitment to pan-Africanism and communism shape his approach to empowering and liberating marginalized groups.

The Black Vegan Experience: Cultivating Health, Culture, and Consciousness with Vonettia Calloway!

The Black Vegan Experience: Cultivating Health, Culture, and Consciousness with Vonettia Calloway!

The Black Vegan Experience is a multicultural educational conference, celebration of African-American ancestry and networking event that was born in November 2019 during a Vitamix demonstration and conversation between a Vegan Teacher, Vegan Nurse, Vegan Nutritionist and Naturopathic Physician. With so many plant-based conferences hosted across the US and locally, there was still little diversity established in most of these medical conferences. This Vegan Quartet sang a new song, one where Black professionals and practitioners would create an educational conference of their own, to address the medical concerns in the Black community and remove the stereotypes attached to Veganism and Black culture. Contributors to this original conversation would go on to form the Committee of Consciousness who have collaborated to host the inaugural event, originally scheduled to debut March 14, 2020, on the rescheduled date of May 15, 2021.

Committee of Consciousness is a newly formed non-profit organization that strives to empower others through education. A percentage of the proceeds from The Black Vegan Experience will go to Committee of Consciousness’ organization to fund building the knowledge base of plant-based nutrition, meal planning, budgeting and related nutrition services in local communities. Executive Director and Event Coordinator, Vonettia Calloway says, “When we know better, we do better.” She and her fellow COC members believe educating others empowers them to make informed choices in addition to helping us all hold each other accountable to higher standards of self-care and caring for Earth. COC plans to partner with other organizations on projects that eradicate food deserts and grant access to healthy food for all. By the end of 2021, COC believes they will be able to provide transportation for families needing this service, one-to-one and group nutrition consultations, referrals to affordable health care and health & wellness workshops within the community.

The Black Vegan Experience, will be a community event, where our keynote speaker, Dr. Milton Mills, from documentaries “What the Health?” and “The Invisible Vegan” (along with producer Jasmine Leyva) will enlighten you on plant-based living, with tentative virtual appearances from Tabitha Brown, other guests, Food, Fun and Fuel for a Vegan Soul…and the Veg-curious of course=)

    Debunking Myths About Cannabis

    Debunking Myths About Cannabis

Summary: There are several myths and misconceptions surrounding cannabis that have persisted over time. Here are a few common ones:

    1. Cannabis is a gateway drug: One prevailing myth suggests that using cannabis will inevitably lead to the use of harder drugs. However, research does not support this claim. While some individuals who use cannabis may go on to use other substances, there is no causal relationship between cannabis use and the use of more dangerous drugs.
    2. Cannabis is highly addictive: While it is true that some individuals may develop a dependence on cannabis, it is not considered as addictive as drugs like nicotine or opioids. The risk of addiction varies among individuals, and most cannabis users do not develop a significant dependency.
    3. Cannabis causes permanent brain damage: There is a common belief that cannabis use can cause irreversible damage to the brain. While heavy and prolonged cannabis use during adolescence may impact cognitive development, the effects are not typically permanent. Moderate adult use of cannabis is not associated with lasting brain damage.
    4. Cannabis has no medical benefits: Historically, cannabis was stigmatized as a recreational drug with no medicinal value. However, scientific research has shown that cannabis and its compounds, such as CBD (cannabidiol) and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), can have various therapeutic effects. It has been used to alleviate symptoms associated with conditions like chronic pain, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, and nausea caused by chemotherapy.
    5. Cannabis use leads to laziness and lack of motivation: Another myth suggests that cannabis users are unmotivated and lazy. While cannabis can have sedative effects, the impact on motivation and productivity varies among individuals. Many cannabis users lead active and successful lives, and its effects can differ depending on the strain, dosage, and individual tolerance.

It is essential to rely on accurate and up-to-date information when discussing cannabis, as debunking these myths promotes a more informed and nuanced understanding of its effects and potential benefits.

Juneteenth: Celebrating Freedom and Honoring History

Juneteenth: Celebrating Freedom and Honoring History

Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. The history of Juneteenth dates back to June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and issued General Order No. 3, which proclaimed the freedom of slaves in Texas, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued by President Abraham Lincoln.

The delay in the enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas was primarily due to the minimal presence of Union troops in the region during the Civil War. As Union forces expanded their control and the war neared its end, General Granger's arrival in Galveston served as a significant moment, delivering the news of freedom to the enslaved population.

Juneteenth quickly became a time for African Americans to celebrate their newfound freedom. The celebrations initially took the form of church gatherings, parades, and community festivities. Over time, the observance of Juneteenth spread to other states and communities, driven by the migration of African Americans to different regions.

During the Reconstruction era, Juneteenth gained even greater significance as African Americans sought to assert their rights as free citizens. However, as Jim Crow laws were implemented and racial segregation persisted, Juneteenth celebrations faced challenges and, at times, were suppressed.

In the late 20th century, there was a resurgence of interest in Juneteenth, driven by the Civil Rights Movement and the push for recognition of African American history and achievements. Efforts to establish Juneteenth as an official holiday gained momentum, with Texas becoming the first state to recognize it as a state holiday in 1980. Since then, many other states have followed suit, and in 2021, Juneteenth was officially declared a federal holiday in the United States.

Today, Juneteenth serves as a day of remembrance, reflection, and celebration of African American culture and history. It is an opportunity to honor the struggles and achievements of those who fought for freedom and equality, while also acknowledging the ongoing work towards racial justice and equality in the United States.
