    FatDag - Chapter 2

    FatDag - Chapter 2

I promised you an update by 6/10 so here goes. It’s a big one.

Other than a day here and there for out-processing. I’m officially done wearing the military uniform. Preparing for this day has not been easy.  The uniform is much more than some camouflage fabric sewn together and dressed with boots. It’s the fabric of our nation and serves to protect the Flag for which we stand. It’s very much a part of my identity - think Superman, without a cape, Spider-Man without a web, Captain America without his shield. Yet, in no way do I feel like a super hero - but when I’m wearing the Military Uniform I am granted super powers.

The collective energy of a grateful nation and the last breaths of those who have gone before us provides the heart and soul to anyone who wears the uniform when fighting for freedom. It’s a feeling you can only experience by raising your right hand and agreeing to give your life for a greater cause. To support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies both foreign and domestic is a “blank check” kind of promise and I swore to God, asking for help, as I made that initial promise back on July 7th, 1992.

To now, no longer have the direct responsibility of that Oath is strange.  The seemingly joyous occasion of my military retirement brings about mixed emotions.  I’m very proud of my service. I trust fully those who volunteer for this enormous responsibility going forward, Yet a piece of my identity is now lost. I’ve been Airman Daggett for 27 of my 46 years and waking up again as Mike will take some getting used to. Trying to re-invent yourself in the middle of your life, is something I wasn’t fully prepared for.

You know the story - I almost lost it all due to failed fitness tests. I came here 3 years ago crying for help.  Without hesitation you answered the call. You were more than the heart and soul of a grateful nation. You answered the call as a peer and a friend.  You answered the call unconditionally as family and that made you my Wingman. Together we fought hand in hand against a strong enemy.  I won my internal battle, like many of you have, but we continue to fight the bigger war because that’s what’s been asked of us. It’s a global battle we fight together as individuals.

The DoD admits that 7.8% of the 2 million Uniformed Military members are losing their internal battle. That’s 156,000 thousand members, but I’m afraid these numbers are conservative. With 39.8% of the US Population fighting this fight, and 31% of otherwise qualified potential recruits ineligible for military service, it won’t be long until our ability to defend our nation is severely degraded. The National Security Crisis at our doorstep is The Obesity Epidemic.

I’ve openly shared my vision for a healthier Force. I’ve launched a non-profit organization and recruited an amazing team.  I’ve talked in front of thousands of military members who have joined the fight. I’ve wanted nothing more than to give back to a community that saved my life. It gives me great pleasure to announce that on 6/10 I start a 2 month internship at WW in NYC to lend my experience, time and talent to the World’s leader in wellness to put forth an actionable solution. The Air Force has agreed to release me early, WW has accepted the offer and it’s now time to fight!  This is Day one, I don’t know where this ends, but I do know it started right here, simply because you said you believed in me and walked with me down the path to wellness.

I march forward not as an individual , but as a representative of all that we’ve done here. Thank you for giving me this opportunity to change the world! 🇺🇸🦅❤️

    I’m gonna be just fine!

    I’m gonna be just fine!

I just left my doctors office for my annual physical.  We didn’t discuss my weight as a contributing factor for any of my ailments. We actually talked about actual treatments BESIDES the dismissive “lose 20lbs”.  He drew blood, checked me from head to toe and a little more 🥺.  It was a thorough visit!

I’m a lifetime member, I made goal in 2016.  In the past 8 months or so my life has been crazy. We talked about all of it.  I told him everything.  He checked my records, my heart, eyes, ears, lungs, Blood Pressure and checked my weight.  He didn’t say a word.  We talked about my strength training routine and how it’s added muscle. I told him I wanted to learn to eat better and asked for a consult to a nutritionist. Sure - I can control my weight with willpower when life is “normal” but I want to learn to really eat better naturally. It’s been my goal, ever since making goal. Given my medical history he linked the nutrition consult to obesity.  I’m so relieved. This is exciting because I’m at a point in my wellness journey where I will actually listen to a nutritionist.  I may not have a couple years ago.  I left without a single prescription, just some lifestyle and wellness adjustments!

I share because, every so often I get reminded from this community that I’ve gained weight since making goal 2+ years ago. I know that. I share it openly. I know why. My doctor knows why and we’re good with it. I just figured I’d put the rest of your minds at ease in case you felt the need to remind me again 😂.

Truly - I’m good. I have a very good relationship with my doctor and I’m thrilled to still be connected to an amazing group of wingmen!

I snapped this photo on the way home to compare it to a point in my life when I didn’t care.. Yeah... Doc is right... I’m gonna be just fine!

The reason I joined WW was because I ate too much BBQ sauce! - There I said it!

I used to say, just the opposite actually ~ “I didn’t join WW because of BBQ sauce” but in reality I was kidding myself.  It WAS the BBQ sauce, and the small handful of M&Ms.  It was the last couple fries from my wife’s plate. It was the 2 cookies in the break room, the small bag of chips, the extra bottle of beer, glass of wine, it was the 3 Hershey’s kisses on the secretary’s desk. It was ALL of those things that in essence were “Untracked” because I rounded them down to Zero in my mind.

This meal above can be Zero Points or 11 Points depending on how you eat it.  Once in a great while, it likely won’t matter which one it is. However the more often you have it, the more the data matters.

If you started the day with untracked coffee creamer, you’re now quickly approaching double your allotted points for the day - but the app shows a 🔵“Great Job”.  The danger that arises from “being on plan - and not getting the results” leads to quitting frustrated.

The difference between “Weight loss mode” and “Maintenance” is somewhere between 2-6 points a day depending on how accurate your tracking is.   So I track it all so that I have an accurate picture of what I’m eating. Then and only then can I learn to make adjustments to hit the goals I have set for myself.

    I root for People!

    I root for People!

I root for people.  I want to see you win! I want you to be incredibly successful.  I’m not digging into your past, I’m simply accepting you as you are today, and I want you to go after it and win!

I’ve made mistakes in my life.  I’ve done stupid things, I’ve learned from them and as a result I’m a different person today than the younger version of me who wasn’t perfect either. It’s quite possible, you’re reading this and willing to admit you aren’t perfect either. I’m still rooting for you just the same. However, If you are not inspired by Tiger Woods’ 5th Green Jacket, then I simply ask you to allow your heart to see the human side of this victory. See it in the eyes of humanity, as if it were your brother, your father, your uncle or friend.

As a society, we lift greatness up, and quickly dump it with early signs of trouble.  Those who fall from grace often have lost the very support they have come to rely on, even if done recklessly by their own hands. To rebuild a life, takes courage.  To do it alone takes strength. To do it from a public stage, takes humility and patience.

This display of greatness has nothing to do with golf.  Golf was simply the skill he developed to allow today’s story from Augusta to impact with the greatest reach.  The game allowed him to rise to the national stage so the world could bear witness to one of lifes greatest lessons. This lesson, 14 years in the making, garnered the attention of the world.  Very few details were left private, a whole world of sin had been exposed. The years of internal defeat were largely silent, yet we were still an unwelcomed witness.  Rather than fade away and give up he went to work to rebuild his life.  His life as a father, a son and a friend needed to him to be mentally strong, giving up would have been far more devastating.

The Master’s Victory for Tiger Woods is a celebration of his courage.  It’s a celebration of strength and it took the game of golf for the word to see what mental strength looks like. The most beautiful part of this story, again, is that it isn’t about golf.  You possess the same capability.  He didn’t do a single thing that you could not do.  He simply kept trying with his sights set on a dream, he remained focused towards its accomplishment.

Go follow this leader, set a goal, make a plan, and get to work. Don’t ever give up because no one ever wins from the sidelines.  The dream is out there, just waiting for you to grab it for yourself.

    I believe in you!

    Own the Weekend!

    Own the Weekend!

    Not all days are equal!

    Monday ↘️
    Tuesday ↘️
    Wednesday ↘️
    Thursday ↘️
    Friday ↘️
    Saturday ↗️
    Sunday ↗️

This is one of the more difficult concepts for me to grasp. When I lost my weight, I was hyper focused. The weekends looked like the weekdays, at least in the tracker. As a result, the scale quickly confirmed my effort. I made goal, then lifetime.

I began to experiment with tracking, strength training, and a term I call balance. I’m looking for the perfect combination and my brain believes that a solid effort M-F can accommodate a less than ideal Saturday and Sunday. My thinking is 5 days on, two days off and since 5 > 2 it’s all going to be alright.

The data does not confirm this however. Now I don’t go crazy on the weekends, I’m still accountable to the process, but quite often it’s 2-3 larger meals over the weekend. Nothing like I used to, but none the less a great weekend. I call it balance. I’m more social and enjoying the company and social element that food provides. But as I always do, I analyze the data.

2-3 unchecked meals, can EASILY eliminate any progress that the previous 18 meals provided. It seems like an unfair ratio and that’s where many of us get stuck.

Our brain says “we’re following the plan” and we are, but with simple math, It’s about 85% effort. (Assuming the 18 are solid) Now, 85% is effective, it will move the needle in the direction you want to go. However, since the progress may be slower than the 1-2 pounds a week that WW says we can expect, we tend to give up citing a lack of progress.

Now if the 2-3 unchecked meals, turns into 3-4 by adding Friday night to the mix, then during the week there is another one here and there, you could very easily find yourself in a “plateau” that really isn’t a plateau. Mentally you’re confused because more often than not you’re “on plan” - but the data I see, after about 3 years of daily weighing, is that 85% isn’t why you joined.

Go all in. Give it 100% and see if that provides the results you’re looking for!

    The FreeStyle FIX!

    The FreeStyle FIX!

This evening our workshop had an amazing discussion that lead to this discovery.  I call it The FreestyleFix!  I'm sharing the video because I want you to get the full effect.

    Here is the summary.

Your daily point value is determined based on your age, gender and Current Weight.  As you lose weight, you lose points.  Everyone gets that, we don't like it, but we get it.  Our bodies are smaller, so we need less food.  As we lose points, we are then forced to make lifestyle changes to accommodate the reduction.

There is no such systematic reduction in the zero points foods.  So if you start off doing well on FS, and then hit a plateau that you can't break, I suspect that it's because the quantity (caloric intake) of your zero points foods hasn't reduced with your smaller body.

When you first join, you have success because you make the transition to healthier food, even in larger quantities and it works.  As you get smaller, you needs less, but often you actually increase the intake of zero points foods because you are now starting to enjoy them.

You need to mindfully adjust your intake as you find success.  By how much? Well that's were you have to do the hard work to find what works for you, but now you know you at least have a starting place to look for success!

On the path to wellness, Judgement is unhealthy!

For three years now I’ve shared many details of my journey publicly. The highlights and revaluations I often share here but often spare you from the downs.  I do it for a couple reasons, mostly because a positive attitude is required to win and I don’t want to take that from you. The other reason, is much of it is personal and I simply am not ready to share it. When appropriate and tied to a lesson I freely share for the benefit of others.

I do however share one piece of my journey regardless of the outcome and that is my weight. It auto tweets, posts to FB and any amateur detective using google could find 174,000 results it in about .061 seconds. I share it freely as part of this process because I treat it as one data point in a much more complex puzzle.  Only I know the full picture of my journey, and even at that there are still pieces I’m missing and will continue to search for. The ups, the downs, the back ups and back downs are well documented and accounted for.  You can only get this much data by not quitting!

I’ve addressed this before but it continues to come up and I feel the lesson is good for the group.  I know many others see my weight data and comment publicly, privately or even internally. It’s entirely your right to do so and please don’t let me stop you, but I’d like to address the associated judgement that from time to time makes it to my ears and my eyes. It’s unhealthy for our community. I’m strong enough to shoulder it, but not everyone is for their respective journey.

I recognize it so easily because, regrettably, I used to do it as well.  The longer I stay committed to my health and attract others with the same goals I meet some incredible people with inspiring stories.  I have welcomed back people after a complete reboot, completely unaware of the life tragedies they have proudly rebounded from.

I have seen people considerably overweight and when they say they are down 100+ pounds my initial judgement stands corrected.  They're proud to share their success yet the fear of judgement prevents them from doing so. It limits their ability to pull from the best resource available and that’s a healthy mind, accomplishing a similar goal.

Your physical appearance and/or scale number has nothing to do with your worth, or the value you bring to this community. Regardless if you love the data or not. Regardless if it’s day one, or year 50 at free lifetime. The value you bring to this community is measured by your willingness to lift others up regardless of where they have fallen from. The value you bring to the world is to do so free from judgement.

I set out recently on a path with a new goal. From time to time some comments appear and remind me that I’m not there, not even close. My goal is to live in a world where we are treated equally without regard to race, sex, religion, sexual orientation, political affiliation, economic factors or of course our weight.

I have made goal, that I promise you! I’m just waiting for the internet and the rest of the planet to catch up!
