Real People In A Real World Part 5: Rights, Responsibilities, And Rewards (1 Corinthians 9:1-19, 22-23)

Real People In A Real World Part 5: Rights, Responsibilities, And Rewards (1 Corinthians 9:1-19, 22-23)

Is Paul just being selfish in a passive-aggressive way in 1 Corinthians 9? Is he trying to demand his rights from a church that hasn't taken good care of him? No, instead he's teaching them about how to live, not just for their "rights" in the gospel, but as servants of Christ. If Paul could choose to make tents to earn a living rather than demand compensation for his preaching in Corinth, they too could learn how to live for the benefit of others. Still true today, we can mature as followers of Jesus, focusing more on the success of others than on our own rights. With this thinking, together we will see the gospel advance locally and globally. The best reward has always been Jesus Himself, and seeing lives genuinely transformed by Him!

    1 Corinthians 9 -

    1 Corinthians 9 -

To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some. 1 Corinthians 9:22

In 1 Corinthians 9, we see Paul living out his passion and instructions from the earlier chapters. We see a man possessed with the desire to win others to Christ. Charles Spurgeon writes about this focus this way, "It is a grand thing to see a man thoroughly possessed with one master passion. Such a man is sure to be strong and if the master principle is excellent, he is sure to be excellent, too. The man of one objective is a man, indeed. Lives with many aims are like water trickling through innumerable streams, none of which is wide enough or deep enough to float the merest cockleshell of a boat. But a life with one objective is like a mighty river flowing between its banks, bearing to the ocean a multitude of ships and spreading fertility on either side. Give me a man not only with a great objective in his soul, but thoroughly possessed by it — his powers all concentrated and he on fire with vehement zeal for his supreme objective — and you have put before me one of the greatest sources of power which the world can produce!
" I ask you what was there in Paul, by the Grace of God, which may not be in you? And what had Jesus done for Paul more than for you? He was divinely changed and so have you been if you have passed from darkness into marvelous light! "

Races & Rookie Mistakes (Philippians 3:7-16)

What causes an athlete to take their eyes off the finish line, celebrate too soon, and forfeit their victory?  That question leads to an examination of perfection and maturity in the Kingdom of God.  Watch out for rookie mistakes on the marathon that is your faith journey.

    All Things to All People

    All Things to All People
Paul says, in order to win them over to Christ I am willing to be all things to all people - not by becoming like them, not by behaving in an un-Christ-like manner, but by being an example to them of the genuine, honest, truthful representative of the One True God, to give them an example of what it looks like, sounds like, is like, to be godly, to be a saved person navigating through an unsaved world....
