#97: What Is the Role of Shepherds?

#97: What Is the Role of Shepherds?

In last week's episode Kerry and Becky discussed the role of elders.  In this week's podcast they discuss the elders' role as shepherds.  After looking at Psalm 23, Ezekiel 34, Ephesians 4, John 10, and other passages in the Bible, they identify three functions of biblical shepherds.  No doubt, to shepherd God's people is a tough assignment!  But, it's God's will that someone care for his people, and surely, he will provide the grace, strength, and wisdom that is needed to carry out these important responsibilities.

Stand Firm in Grace - 1 Peter 5:12-14

Stand Firm in Grace - 1 Peter 5:12-14

Are you feeling a bit alone? Maybe a bit discouraged? This week's sermon looks at 1 Peter 5:12-14 and is called "Stand in True Grace." In this passage Peter ends his letter with reminders to his recipients that they are not alone and by encouraging them to stand firm in the "true grace of God." This sermon was recorded during a time of struggle with the Coronavirus pandemic, but no matter when it is, we also need the encouragement that comes from the true grace of God and we need to remember that we are not alone.

    Living with Eternity in View

    Living with Eternity in View

Part 22 of the "Scattered: The Hope of the Gospel in a Changing World" sermon series on 1 Peter.

This sermon was recorded on 3/21/2020 for the use of Orchard Community Church since we cannot gather right now as a church due to the Coronavirus outbreak. This sermon looks 1 Peter 5:10-11 and the hope that comes from living with an eternal perspective as we face difficulty.

Even When the Lions Roar - 1 Peter 5:8-9

Even When the Lions Roar - 1 Peter 5:8-9

This sermon was supposed to be preached on Sunday, March 15, 2020, but due to the spread of the COVID-19 virus the church had to cancel worship services. This sermon was recorded by Pastor Dave in his office on 3/18/2020.

In 1 Peter 3:5-8 we see that there is a spiritual component behind any suffering we face from this world. Peter cautions his readers to be ready and aware of the dangers and to stand firm in our faith with our brothers and sisters around the world who are also suffering. This passage is especially relevant to the roaring lion at work in our world at this moment with the spread of this disease and the fear it causes. We need to hear the reminder to stand strong in our faith.

    Clothed with Humility

    Clothed with Humility

In this sermon titled "Clothed with Humility", we look at 1 Peter 5:5-7. Here Peter continues to challenge and encourage Christians who are struggling by pointing them to extreme trust in God. Humility does not come from weakness but rather from a strong faith in a God who is greater than all of our circumstances. This kind of humility is freeing and relieves us of the constant anxiety of trying to control every situation.

    Shepherding in Suffering

    Shepherding in Suffering

Going through difficult times is stressful. Helping others who are going through difficult times is not easy. Helping others who are going through difficult times while you are also going through a difficult time is especially difficult. In a sermon called "Shepherding in Suffering" we look at 1 Peter 5:1-5 where Peter talks to leaders in the church who are experiencing the difficulties of suffering for their faith and are also called to lead and shepherd the people of the church who are going through the same difficulties. While what Peter says has particular application to elders who lead the church, it also applies to anyone who is mature in their faith and should help care for others as they struggle to follow Christ. This loving shepherding woven into the relationships of the church is part of the encouragement Peter gives for helping those who are suffering as they follow Christ.

    Rule or Be Ruled

    Rule or Be Ruled

The deliriously happy couple married and expected to live to a ripe old age enjoying grandchildren and savoring their twilight years together. Cancer! She died at age 27. He was devastated. Another young man studied hard and received good grades in hopes of getting a job with the large firm. Another less qualified candidate knew the CEO personally and was hired instead. He was downcast. It happens to all of us. What we expected didn’t happen. What we wanted was not granted. Life surprised us with an unexpected turn. Our face fell. Our shoulders slumped. It’s natural. We are not in control of everything, and we don’t always interpret our hopes correctly. It is natural, but it is also dangerous. In that critical moment, we are faced with a choice, and the consequences of that choice are far-reaching. We are faced with an opportunity to identify as a victim, villain, or victor.
