Genombrottet, även internationellt, kom på 70-talet med orkesterverket Through and through.

Episode 016 - In Which We Serve (1942)

Episode 016 - In Which We Serve (1942)

Welcome to Reel Britannia-a very British podcast about very British films....with the occasional hint of professionalism.

At last, we welcome the return of Tony who joins Scott for a listener request episode. Huge thanks to Su who has selected In Which We Serve from 1942 for us to review this time around.

Co-directors David Lean and Noel Coward (in his sole filmmaking effort) created this patriotic World War II drama under the auspices of Great Britain's Ministry of Information. After the sinking of the HMS Torrin during the Battle of Crete in 1941, the ship's survivors -- including Captain Kinross (Noel Coward), Chief Petty Officer Hardy (Bernard Miles) and Seaman Blake (John Mills) -- recall their tour of duty in flashback while awaiting rescue in lifeboats being strafed by German airplanes.

Albert Mohler: One Family’s Sacrifice for Liberty

The New York Times recently published a story entitled “Wreck of the Juneau Is Found.” It’s about the discovery of the U.S. Navy cruiser Juneau that was blasted apart by a Japanese torpedo in 1942.

Even in the context of the millions and millions of casualties of World War II on all sides, the story Juneau resonates in a special way in the American memory, a memory of indebtedness to one family. One family that lost not one, not two, not three, not four but five sons on one day on one ship!

75 years later, the Juneau's wreckage has been discovered but the American people’s moral debt remains: a moral debt to all those who have given their lives and have given their family members to the cause of defending liberty.

    Episode 10 - Casablanca

    Episode 10 - Casablanca

This week we have a Bogie in our sights as we tear apart one of the most acclaimed movies in Hollywood history, "Casablanca." This 1942 film noir "masterpiece" tends to stirrup the emotions in critics, but we feel that it's time to put it out to pasture.

Humphrey Bogart plays Rick Blaine, a broken-hearted nightclub owner who has given up on the world after being jilted by a woman he only knew for a week. Ingrid Bergman plays Ilsa, the prodigal lover who now needs Rick to help her husband escape Nazi peril.

We wonder why this movie thinks it's totally fine to have one of its hero characters, Captain Renault, extort sex from fleeing refugees. We also question how fugitives on the run have such extensive wardrobes and we opine on the equine countenance of the film's star.

It's another countdown, time to relive some arcade classics and discuss the best ones!

As any old school gamer will tell you, there was a time before home consoles where video games existed purely in arcades, and when they did make their way into the homes it was still years before good looking and fun multiplayer existed, and forget internet, a decade at least away! The arcade was the place where gamers could hang out with other people who loved gaming, sometimes going head to head in a competitive title, or join forces to vanquish the forces of darkness or the "bag guys". Fighters, shooters, racers, pinball, you name it the arcade was the place to go. This week the VG Boys discuss their top 20 favorite arcade classics from the years where arcades were where it was at for gaming. Enjoy the podcast!
