DDH - Why Go To The Moon?

DDH - Why Go To The Moon?
It’s one of those “myths” of history, that on September 12, 1962, then President John F. Kennedy stood in Rice Stadium in Houston and announced to a stunned and surprised nation and world that the United States was committing itself to putting a man on the moon – and returning him safely – before the end of the decade. The speech is stirring and it was certainly one of Kennedy’s most noted. What it was not, was any kind of surprise at all. More than a year before, Kennedy had told a wildly cheering Congress that the moon was the goal, and they in turn were more than happy to fund it. What hadn’t happened after that announcement was the wild across the board support for the goal for which he had hoped. In fact, many newspapers ran articles explaining why the moon simply wasn’t a realistic goal, some going so far as to “prove” that it was, in fact, impossible. The genius of Kennedy’s 1962 speech was that he knew all the naysayers would be listening, along with the folks who simply wanted to hear something inspirational of uplifting, given the troubling times in which they lived. In one of the greatest moment of oratory, JFK delivered on the challenge to challenge America. And this time, the naysayers would have to come up with a different response…

President Kennedy's Birthday Gala: Fact vs. Fiction | What's really true and what's folklore?

President Kennedy's Birthday Gala: Fact vs. Fiction | What's really true and what's folklore?

In this episode of All Things Marilyn we break down the facts and the rumors about President Kennedy's birthday gala at Madison Square Garden in New York on May 19, 1962. What are the facts? What's true and not true? There are so many stories, rumors, legends, and lies about this historic event:

    • Marilyn bought five tickets at $1,000.00 to attend President Kennedy’s birthday gala, even though she was a performer! Who were the other four tickets for?
    • What’s the history of the gown Marilyn wore to the event? Who designed it? How much did she pay for the gown? Was she really sewn into the dress? Is it true that it’s the most expensive dress in the world?
    • Was Jackie Kennedy at President Kennedy’s birthday gala?
    • Did Marilyn really give JFK a gold Rolex watch as a birthday gift that night?
    • There are photos of Marilyn holding an item in her hand at the event. What was it?
    • Was Marilyn really intoxicated when she performed “Happy Birthday Mr. President” for JFK?
    • Did Marilyn and President Kennedy spend the night together after the birthday gala?
    • Did Marlene Dietrich influence Marilyn’s performance that night?
    • Who really did Marilyn’s hair and makeup for the birthday gala?

Get all the facts here. And, hear Marilyn's own words as she speaks about the event.

    2. Golpe a Golpe: El Camino Del Rey

    Kid Galahad (1962)

    Kid Galahad (1962)

Our first Elvis movie and we get into what we thought about his nipples right away!  We watch Kid Galahad, the remake, and realize right away it's not up to the same caliber than the original, but did we like it better?  Maybe...

Besides Elvis's nipples, we also talk about Charles Bronson's unexplained limp,  the music in the film, and a bevy of strange lines.  Let's all go to Cream Valley, NY (gross) and duke it out!

    Next film:  Wimbledon

Wimbledon isn't streaming anywhere for free so either rent it or check out your local library.

    Carnival of Souls

    Carnival of Souls
In our final installment of the first annual edition of Spooktober Spooktacular, we get lost trying to catch our bearings within the shoestring labyrinth of Herk Harvey's single feature film, Carnival of Souls. But before we get there...this week's Blue Plate Special finds us digging through the sugar, *spice*, and everything nice associated with the recently released adaptation of one of science fiction literature's crown jewels, Dune. After digging our way out from under the sandworms, we gleefully plunge ourselves into the inviting abyss of our 1962 subject film, a haunting cult classic that should've been the beginning of a long and fruitful career for its director but instead slowly found its audience amongst late night channel surfers and the midnight movie faithful. As fate would have it, its haunting aura is one that's endured for six decades now: good luck exorcising its power anytime soon. Feel free to skip to 1:55:10 for the beginning of our audio commentary. Showa Era Godzilla: King Kong Vs. Godzilla (1962)

Godzilla is such a pop culture icon that we thought it would be a great idea to dive into some of his more iconic outings this month on Behind the Hype, starting with the third film in the series: King Kong vs. Godzilla. Apart from one problem spot, the film is quite a delight and features everything fun you would expect from a showdown of two pop culture titans.

Throwback Sunday: Mama Raven Recalls Living Through the Cuban Missile Crisis of October 1962

Throwback Sunday: Mama Raven Recalls Living Through the Cuban Missile Crisis of October 1962

What's up to my salubrious space racers and mercurial Motor City mastodons! (That's gotta be a Roller Derby team btw)

It's October 14, 1962 in Suburban Detroit. John Glenn has just months earlier become the first American to orbit the Earth. John F. Kennedy in May has asked Congress for $531 million dollars (equivalent to $4.6 billion today) to put a man on the moon by the end of the decade. The first Walmart discount store is opened up in Bentonville, Arkansas. Andy Warhol paints a can of Campbell Soup. And, an American U-2 Spy Plane doing reconnaissance over Cuba captures photographic proof of the Soviets installing nuclear missile bases on the island nation, just 90 miles off the coast of Florida.

Unbeknownst to the American public, including my Mom, who was celebrating her 13th birthday that day, the Cuban Missile Crisis has begun.

Last episode we examined the Cuban Missile Crisis from a geopolitical and logistical perspective. This episode we look at the events from a personal, emotional and psychological perspective.

To achieve this mighty feat of righteous nostalgia we turn to my wonderful Mom, who was kind enough to join the pod and take a trip down memory lane, helping us to re-live those tense days in middle October 1962.

This is a fun one folks! Jump in, do the Mashed Potato, or the Twist, or the Watusi, and enjoy this diner-lit, drive-in episode of a remarkable chapter from a bygone era.

Big Thank You to Mama Tanner for guiding us on this journey!
