    Vietnam in our Family Album

    Vietnam in our Family Album

In 1968, my Dad, Owen Petersen, left the Bridger Valley of Wyoming for Vietnam where he served as a platoon leader in the 3rd Marine Division. After he came home, he put the photos he took into an album that collected dust with our other photos. In this interview we ask him about those pictures and what it was like to be boots on the ground in the war.

    Brent Rubin

    Brent Rubin

The End Anxiety podcast has hosted several wonderful guests who have been gracious enough to share their stories about how the Transcendental Meditation program has helped them through an assortment of trials and tribulations. Often their accounts speak of how some personal issue or crisis is the motivation which led them to explore the possibilities of TM in the first place. Our guest today is a little different. Brent Rubin is a retired podiatrist living in Western Florida who has been practicing TM since 1969, and when asked he will describe himself as “living the dream.” Brent did not come on our program to talk about any specific problems in his life—not that he claims to live a completely worry-free existence—but he is more interested in talking about the mental clarity that one can achieve from commitment to the TM program over decades. Sure, problems arise, but Brent explains how TM helps him to put everything in perspective and how he has come to realize that a lot of our problems exist more in our own minds than in reality. Mr. Rubin has also found that with TM the motivation and drive that he had in his professional life continues well past his retirement. Sit down and relax with a cup of tea, and enjoy today’s fun, easygoing, and very spontaneous chat as Jim and Brent talk about how the Transcendental Meditation program has something to offer for everyone.

69 - Slut Shamed in the Sunday Morning Paper - Anne-Josèphe Terwagne

We’ve all done it. Giggled under your breath at the mention of 69. Chuckled at someone alluding to the act of 69-ing. But WHO actually enjoys this heinous deed? (Spoiler: it's not us)

This week, Colin tells us about French revolutionary Anne-Josèphe Terwagne while Sierra explains where donut holes come from. Join us as we discover the molecular structure of carbs, the year 1969, and Wikipedia's sexual liberation.

#116: The Origins of the War on Cannabis

#116: The Origins of the War on Cannabis

Before the war on drugs picked up much steam in the United States, the war on Cannabis had to be built from scratch. In this episode, I trace the war on drugs back to pre-1900s roots, including the interests of John Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, Andrew Mellon, Lammot Dupont II, Harry Anslinger, Henry Ford and hemp farmers nation wide.

I cover the outlawing of hemp farming, the industrial conspiracy to monopolize the use of petroleum-based products, the capitalistic roots of the war on drugs, and the use of racism by early war-engineers to garner support from the public. And in the process, we review some important US history.

Elder S. Gifford Nielsen on the Black 14, feeding the hungry and healing communities, with guest host Sheri Dew

Elder S. Gifford Nielsen on the Black 14, feeding the hungry and healing communities, with guest host Sheri Dew

In 1969, 14 members of the University of Wyoming football team were unfairly dismissed for asking to participate in a peaceful racial protest in a game against Brigham Young University. A half-century later on Sept. 24, 2022, two members of the group, now known as the “Black 14”, ceremoniously lit the Y on the mountain above BYU’s Cougar Stadium. At their side was Elder S. Gifford Nielsen, a General Authority Seventy and former BYU quarterback. Elder Nielsen joins this episode of The Church News podcast to talk about how the Church has partnered with the Black 14 to heal that community rift while feeding the hungry, his newest assignment as president of the Church’s Africa West Area, and how examples of Christ-like leadership continue to shape his life today. He is joined by fellow BYU alumni Sister Sheri Dew, executive vice president of Deseret Management Corp. and a former member of the Relief Society general presidency, as guest host.

The Church News Podcast is a weekly podcast that invites listeners to make a journey of connection with members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints across the globe. Host Sarah Jane Weaver, reporter and editor for The Church News for a quarter-century, shares a unique view of the stories, events, and most important people who form this international faith. With each episode, listeners are asked to embark on a journey to learn from one another and ponder, “What do I know now?” because of the experience. Produced by KellieAnn Halvorsen.

    Peace, Love, Anarchy

A team of promoters set out to recreate the euphoria of Woodstock 1969 three decades later only to discover how much music and culture have changed. Two documentaries on this event (Netflix and Hulu) will be thoroughly spoiled in this episode. Also much of the content is vile and/or graphic. You’ve been warned.

Min tone i livet: Thomas Ulrik Larsen - The Beatles, Something

Min tone i livet: Thomas Ulrik Larsen - The Beatles, Something
#71 Dying Earths and dead ends: The Time Dweller (1969) by Michael Moorcock

#71 Dying Earths and dead ends: The Time Dweller (1969) by Michael Moorcock

Normal human lives are in short supply in The Time Dweller. Originally published in 1969, this collection is one of the earliest efforts to gather together some of Michael Moorcock’s shorter stories. Of the nine entries in this volume, seven were originally published in New Worlds, one of the leading British SF magazines. It might not have been too difficult to get them published, because at the time the editor was one... Michael Moorcock.

    Afsnit 20: Trommeslagere

Will and Kevin Hines are brothers. They are kind of comedians. And they are the only two guys to host a podcast about a thing that they like. That podcast is the extremely good Screw It, We're Just Gonna Talk About Comics, which is sort of like what we do except they only talk about their favorite comics. We've wasted hundreds of hours of our lives.
