    The Rare Groove House Show

    The Rare Groove House Show
I'm not a house DJ but now and then I like to round up a selection of records I've acquired - mostly for my own listening pleasure. This is a group of records I've been playing this year- most of them would be classed as house, although they go beyond 4/4 beats into jazz and soul territory. Most tracks here are 2015 releases with a few classics thrown in. Labels featured are Prescription, Yoruba, Strictly Jaz Unit and Soul People. Feedback very welcome!

Equipment used: Technics 1200 turntables, Pioneer mixer, Shure styli, Sony CD recorder, vinyl records.

    This Didn't Come Easy

    This Didn't Come Easy
Not an easy one. It took some months to gather the tracks during a busy period in my life. On the spur of the moment I threw them all down. Excuse the rough cut nature of the mix. Perfection can be boring and I like to select tracks as they come to mind. I guess this mix is influenced by listening to DJs such as Dez Andres and Rick Wilhite over recent times. Finding out that Matthew Herbert lives near me made me seek out his Secondhand Sounds LP- which was in my DJ bag, as always being a solid staple. Ultimately this got me in front of the decks. Since my last mix, sadly, East Village in Old Street, London has closed. I have many happy memories of the place which encouraged eclecticism and good music.

    Terry Callier Special

    Terry Callier Special
Soul/Jazz Folk singer and guitarist Terry Callier, passed away last week (October 27, 2012) aged 67 after suffering from throat cancer. Terry released a string of enduring and influential albums between the early 60's and the late 80's and enjoyed a creative rebirth during the late 90’s in the UK when his Folk, Soulful music was revived by the acid-jazz movement, and great new albums via Talkin Loud Records and Mr Bongos. Terry's more modern collaborators included Beth Orton, Massive Attack, 4hero, Incognito, Paul Weller and Nujabes. It wasn't just the distinct voice and guitar playing that made Terry so special in his early era but his sometimes radical out-there songwriting skills were picked up by the likes of The Dells, Jerry Butler, Dee Sharp Gamble and The Rotary Connection. Credit also goes to Terry for Spotting Minnie Riperton as she worked as a receptionist at Chess Cadet Records (so the story goes). Some of my personal favorites from Terry is his work with arrangers Charles Stepney and Richard Evans at Cadet records. Enjoy the selection. Rest In Power Terry Callier. Marc Mac

    Dusty Motown Crates

    Dusty Motown Crates
Marc Mac presents 60 minutes of Motown Dusty Grooves “mixtape style”. All "green light Technics" strictly vinyl. Part One. Without doubt Motown has always been one of my fave labels and truth is you don't have to dig to deep to find Motown gems as it was such a popular label. In more recent times loads of previously unreleased Motown tracks have surfaced solidifying my admiration for the Motown groove. Shout also has to go to the many Hip hop producers that helped in keeping the groove alive through sampling. check it out. In The Library - Marc Mac

In The Library - Marc Mac
Ok Chill... kicking off 2012 with a trip to the library. A little mix dedicated to the many great library labels, musicians and composers; Alan Hawkshaw, Keith Mansfield, Alan Parker, Sammy Burdson, De Wolfe, KPM, Sylvester, Conroy Music to name a few. There's 1000's of good lib records worldwide but I would probably have to say that my faves came from London in the 60's & 70's and I think it has a lot to do with the cool production studios in the UK during that time. Funny, as a kid watching UK tv in the 70's & 80's funky grooves always popped on programs even the news & sports programs, I'm pretty sure the musicians would have listened to whatever was cool in the US at the time (Stevie, Herbie and Quincy Jones) then vibed off the influence. Of course library music has become a big and important part of Hip-hop and Beatmaking with producers and DJ's parting with plenty cash and traveling far and wide for a dope track, drum break or sample buried in tons of cheesy wackness. anyway hope you dig. PEACE. Marc Mac http://omniverse-records.bandcamp.com/ http://4hero.co.uk http://www.facebook.com/marcmac4hero

    Saturday Night Feelings

    Saturday Night Feelings
Saturday Night in London and I was thinking about a inspirational DJ set I saw during the week. A very stylish looking Femi Fem, formerly of the Young Disciples, played a lovely eclectic set at the National Portrait Gallery. Nice vibes. Check out the Thursday night late shift in this wonderful venue for guest DJs and exceptional acoustics.

With that in mind I dug through some old crates and pulled out a few favourites. There's nothing new on this mix but I like to think the music has a certain quality to it.

For those of you who've been watching carefully you will know that I have been hosting 'The Rare Groove Show' on www.shoreditchradio.co.uk The first show is now available as a download. Show 2 was broadcast on March 3rd and will be available to download soon.

Please follow and support this new radio venture managed by the irrepressible man about Shoreditch, Delroy Philogene.
