Today, we have a special guest, author Kyla Zhao, known for her debut novel "The Fraud Squad." Born and raised in Singapore, Kyla graduated from Stanford University with a Master's in Communications (Media Studies) and a Bachelor's in Psychology. She works in marketing at a tech company in Silicon Valley, California. 

Besides novel writing, Kyla has an extensive magazine editorial portfolio. Previously, she was a fashion and lifestyle writer at Vogue Singapore. She has also written for the Singapore editions of Harper's Bazaar and Tatler, covered the Asian Television Awards, and interviewed personalities such as singer Nathan Sykes. Above all else, Kyla hopes to champion Asian representation in her works and write the characters of color that she rarely got to read about when she was young.

This week, in celebration of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month (or AAPI Heritage Month), we talk about AAPI leadership and community-building with Grace Lee of ReThink Disposable, a program of the Clean Water Fund, that has led to some of the most essential pilot projects fostering change in the reuse movement today.  Raised in Los Angeles by scientists from Taiwan, Grace has a long history of leadership for environmental stewardship in California, including her work leading ReThink’s groundbreaking business engagement efforts in Los Angeles and Oakland. We talk about being the only Asian women at the table in politics, how to get more AAPI Gen Z to get excited about and involved in politics, the importance of AAPI representation in politics, and how to better serve the Asian American community in politics. About Linh:
Linh Nguyen is a Senior Advisor for RUN AAPI and a Senior Advisor for Beto O’Rourke’s campaign for Governor in Texas. Linh has extensive political electoral experience, specializing in outreach strategy to young voters, Asian-Pacific Islanders, and communities of color. 

Linh joined the Democratic Party of Georgia as their AAPI Coalition Director for the 2021 Senate runoff elections. She rounded out the election cycle with the Presidential Inaugural Committee’s Office of Public Engagement to welcome the Biden-Harris administration where she consulted on creative programming with community partners. Linh also consulted on AAPI engagement in disaster relief and public health emergencies for Governor Newsom’s Office of Emergency Services. She spent the 2020 presidential year with Sen. Cory Booker and was the Political Director for #TheNew campaign: a creative collaboration between RUN AAPI and Meena Harris’s Phenomenal Woman.

Beth and Dianne speak with Tammy Tran, Senior Manager of Government Relations at Southern California Edison (SCE), about her journey to career success,  her wide range of experience across government, nonprofits, and corporate environments, and perspectives and advocacy when it comes to Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month.
Tammy conveys her personal story and expertise, starting with her family's experience as first-generation immigrants to specific guidance on how professional environments can ensure that their DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) efforts are genuine. Tammy has over 15 years of experience working in government, election campaigns, media, and grassroots nonprofit organizations. Prior to working at SCE, she served as Deputy Chief of Staff and District Director for the California State Senate and as the executive director of a nonprofit.

 SCE, also known as SoCal Edison,  is one of the largest electric utilities in the US and a longtime leader in renewable energy and energy efficiency. SCE delivers power to 15 million people in 50,000 square-miles across central, coastal, and Southern California, excluding the City of Los Angeles and some other cities.
