    Places Of Our Lives

    Places Of Our Lives
Abraham has another encounter with Abimelech, the King of Gerar. How does this account advance the narrative of Abraham's life? Once again we see the importance of the idea of covenant. By the end of this passage Abraham has two tangible seals of God's promises to him, a small child and a hole in the ground. We reflect on the crucial places in Abraham's walk with God, and on the importance of place in his and our stories. What of the places in your life?

    But God...

    But God...
Our story returns now to Abraham, and we contemplate the significance of his travels to the Negev and on to Gerar. But Abraham, like us, is prone to compartmentalize his life. Why does he say that his wife is his sister? This has happened before, but how often have Abraham and Sarah carried out this deception? We learn an important new lesson about Abraham’s love and reverence for God when we consider a fear that has dogged him since he left Haran. We see what an awful mess Abraham has made of God’s promise, with no way to set things right. But God…

    Judges 10-12 | Things You Shouldn't Say

    Judges 10-12 | Things You Shouldn't Say

Judges 10-12 is a section of the Book of Judges in the Old Testament that covers the rule of three judges: Tola, Jair, and Jephthah.

Tola judged Israel for 23 years and was followed by Jair, who judged for 22 years. Both judges are described as leading peaceful times for the Israelites.

Jephthah, on the other hand, is a more complex figure. He was a skilled warrior and leader, but his story is marred by his vow to sacrifice the first thing that came out of his house if he was victorious in battle. Tragically, the first thing to greet him upon his return was his own daughter, whom he had to fulfill his vow to sacrifice.

The story of Jephthah highlights the importance of sound doctrine, particularly when it comes to making vows or promises. Jephthah's vow was rash and ultimately led to tragedy. Sound doctrine would have taught him to carefully consider the consequences of his actions and to seek God's guidance before making such a serious commitment.

Sound doctrine is essential for all believers, as it provides a solid foundation for our faith and helps us avoid the pitfalls of false teaching and misguided beliefs. The Bible warns us about false teachers and the importance of discernment, and sound doctrine is the key to both. By studying and understanding the teachings of the Bible, we can ensure that our beliefs are grounded in truth and that our actions align with God's will.

    Day 92: Jephthah's Vow (2023)

    Day 92: Jephthah's Vow (2023)
Today's readings are Judges 9-11, Ruth 4, and Psalm 137. In the reading from Judges, we hear about the rise and fall of Abimelech, as well as the misguided and heartbreaking vow Jephthah makes to God in return for victory over the Ammonites. We also conclude the book of Ruth with the marriage of Boaz and Ruth. For the complete reading plan, visit ascensionpress.com/bibleinayear. Judges 8-9 | Should I Take God's Credit?

    Judges 8-9 | Should I Take God's Credit?

In Judges 8, Gideon and his army chase down the fleeing Midianite kings Zebah and Zalmunna. Along the way, they ask the cities of Succoth and Penuel for help, but both refuse, so Gideon vows to punish them later. After capturing the kings, Gideon returns to Succoth and Penuel, punishes their leaders, and destroys their cities. The Israelites then offer to make Gideon their king, but he declines, instead requesting gold earrings to make an ephod. Gideon dies, and the Israelites fall back into idolatry.

Moving on to Judges 9, after Gideon's death, his son Abimelech convinces the leaders of Shechem to make him king by murdering all of his brothers except for Jotham, who warns the people of Shechem about Abimelech's wickedness before fleeing. Abimelech rules for three years before the people of Shechem rebel against him, leading to a series of battles that ultimately result in Abimelech's death. Jotham's curse on the people of Shechem then comes true as they are destroyed by fire.

One important lesson we can draw from Judges 8-9 is the danger of taking credit for God's actions and falling into the trap of pride. In Judges 8, Gideon refuses to be made king but instead requests gold earrings from the Israelites, which he uses to make an ephod. While this seems like a harmless act, it's important to note that the ephod was an object of priestly significance that symbolized the presence of God. By making the ephod, Gideon may have been trying to take credit for God's actions and position himself as a religious leader. Similarly, in Judges 9, Abimelech is consumed by pride and becomes a ruthless tyrant who murders his own family to become king. Ultimately, both Gideon and Abimelech's actions lead to destruction and chaos, highlighting the importance of humility and giving credit to God for our accomplishments.

    January 8/23- Abimelech: The Thornbush

    January 8/23- Abimelech: The Thornbush

Today we return to our series on the Book of Judges by turning to Judges 9:1-15;42-57 Abimelech: The Thornbush. Abimelech is Gideon’s son through a concubine and so he murders all his half brothers in order to rule over the people. His half-brother, Jotham, escapes and then curses Abimelech. Israel is looking and acting more and more like the nations around them instead of the people God wants them to be - shaped by his laws and festivals. God allows Abimelech to rule for a few years but turns the people against him. God allows us to suffer the consequences of our choices, but when we cry out to him, he responds and will bring order into the chaos we create through our own choices.

Abraham and Abimelech - The Book of Genesis

Abraham and Abimelech - The Book of Genesis

In this Bible Story, Abraham again lies about his wife to protect his own life from King Abimelech. Abimelech then takes her but God warns him in a dream and he restores Sarah to Abraham. This story is inspired by Genesis 20. Go to BibleinaYear.com and learn the Bible in a Year.

Today's Bible verse is Genesis 20:1 from the King James Version.

Episode 14: Once again, Abraham’s fear for his life causes him to place his wife in harm's way. This time it’s in the kingdom of Abimelech that he tells the men she is his sister. And as in Egypt, the king takes Sarah to be with him. This time, however, Abimelech does not touch her, and God comes to him in a dream, warning him of the situation he is in.

    Who's Never Absent - Audio

    Who's Never Absent - Audio
There is something missing in this entire passage. David’s fled, or trying to flee the Presence of Saul, but where is he to go? What’s he supposed to do? All the author does right now is show us what he’s doing. But something is missing. One of my commentators brings up, “On various occasions, reference is made to David’s enquiring of the Lord with respect to where he should go and what he should do (e.g. 23:2, 4; 30:8; 2 Sam. 2:1; 5:19, 23). No such reference is recorded in the present chapter. What will come of all this?” (Philipps V. Long, TOTC, 1 and 2 Samuel)

2022-Q2-06 Lesson Review: The Roots of Abraham

"The Roots of Abraham" — Review of Lesson #6 of the 2nd Quarter of 2022 -

The Sabbath School Lesson study guide can be found here:
    https://ssnet.org/lessons/22b/less06m.html

The title of this quarter's theme is: Genesis: The Book of the Beginning

Genesis provides us with the only authentic account of how life came to be on planet earth, how sin originated here, and what God plans to do about it.  Creation, the Fall, and the Redemption are all covered here. This is a foundational book, and sets in place many principles for understanding the rest of God’s Word.

During many of our podcasts, you will hear us make reference to “The Key Principles of Effective Bible Study,”  a document which outlines core concepts shown in the scriptures that will help you better understand many Biblical themes and doctrines.  We have done a whole podcast series on these principles which  can be found here.

Lastly, we recommend that you check out https://TrueWisdom.buzzsprout.com for additional Bible Study podcasts, covering many different Bible topics, and done in a slightly different format from the podcasts on this channel.

We pray that all of these resources will be very helpful to you in your Bible Studies.

If you have any questions or comments, please send them to: BibleQuestions@ASBzone.com

    Special Note:

    • In Wednesday's lesson, we should not be surprised that Abraham defeated an entire combined army.  After all, a few hundred years later, Gideon would be led by God to do the same thing, using only 300 men, to a massive Midian army.
