Kaylan Buteyn on following her creative dreams while navigating motherhood

Kaylan Buteyn on following her creative dreams while navigating motherhood
This week, our host Charuka Arora invites Kaylan Buteyn, who talks about her life as an artist and a mother. Kaylan’s journey is a fascinating one because she became an artist after becoming a mother. Unlike many other artists, Kaylan did not have the luxury to give her career the time she wanted to. Despite the odds, she talks about discovering her creative passions and the challenges she had to endure while juggling the roles in her personal as well as professional life. For Kaylan, it was hard to find opportunities in a small town, but she created her own path on her own terms. In this episode, Kaylan talks about the beginning of her career, how she found her true passion, and how she manages it all with three children. Apart from creating art in her studio, she is also the founder of Artist/Mother Podcast which aims to provide artist mothers a platform to share experiences and connect with each other. The podcast community has now grown and it exists as the Thrive Together Network which supports female identifying, non-binary, and trans artists through retreats and exhibitions. Working in textile, Kaylan channels her inner artists by making quilts, abstraction, domestic textiles, and collage. Unlike most artists who are drawn to blank canvases, Kaylan is drawn to materials, rips stains, and texture; these elements inspire her. Kaylan likes to play with the material she has collected over time, and the fabric compositions she makes are a direct reflection of her future and past self. In fact, it was motherhood itself that gives Kaylan her inspiration, as her maternal experience have contributed to her abstract art. Kaylan believes in materials holding memory, and through her art, she aims to explore physical representations of generational care. With quilting, dying, sewing, painting, gluing, and stitching, Kaylan creates pieces that are more than just art. Each piece tells a story and contributes in linking places, people and perceptions. To read more about how Kaylan balances her roles of being a mother and an artist, listen to this week’s podcast and find out how mothers are often crushed under unrealistic societal expectations.    Pre-Order our Studio Visit Book Vol 2. here: Learn how you can UNLOCK YOUR CREATIVE POTENTIAL in 2023. All a Canvas Holds

    All a Canvas Holds

Every art form has its own language, a puzzle to unlock. One of the great joys of life is having a conversation with an artist who can decipher the code for us and allow us to see paintings anew. For this episode, we visit art galleries with two phenomenal Yaddo artists: Odili Donald Odita—the Nigerian American abstract painter whose vibrant large-scale paintings and site-specific installations mirror the mixed realities of life—and Alexi Worth, the acclaimed critic and painter whose work explores what it means, in our digitally supersaturated environment, for pictures to be “mindmade and handmade.” Contributing artists: Joseph Keckler, Veterinarian, The Dave Brubeck Quartet. Special thanks to D.C. Moore Gallery and Jack Shainman Gallery.

    Bobbie Burgers - In Conversation

    Bobbie Burgers - In Conversation

Canadian floral abstract artists Bobbie Burgers joins host Juliet from her studio in Vancouver for an in depth conversation into her current practice, her compulsion to create and paint and how the passing of time continues to inform her artwork and compositions.

We have long admired Bobbie's large scale flora works and most recently her smaller scale collage and sculptural pieces and this podcast is an opportunity to deconstruct how she views her own work and the challenges and joy which she experiences in the studio.

Careers are often guided by opportunity, discipline and determination and Bobbie's childhood experiences and early success offered her the potential to experience her live as an artist infused with nature, water and her environment.

We very much look forward to welcoming Bobbie Burgers to the Nordic Art Agency in the future.

Krystii Melaine: Western Realist Painter - Epi. 193, Host Dr. Mark Sublette

Krystii Melaine: Western Realist Painter - Epi. 193, Host Dr. Mark Sublette

I had Krystii Melaine on the podcast today. She was born and raised in a very small town in southeastern Australia called Bairnsdale and followed her love of art up and down, trying to find her path. Eventually, she found her way into America and started painting Western art, which was a thing she didn't even know existed.

Fast forward to today and she's one of the top artists in America painting wildlife and western figurative realism. She's done Native American subjects as well as cowboy subjects and is in more than 25 museum collections.

It's just really fun to just hear how somebody from a little town in Australia can have a dream that a lot of us in the art world have/ had and pursue it so successfully. That's a big deal, right? To leave your country,  leave your family and friends,  follow your dream, and find success and security from your passion.

Krystii will tell you her motto is: "How hard could it be?" Well, let me tell you, achieving what Krystii has achieved is incredibly difficult. It's something to be applauded. So if you're anything like me you'll find this podcast very interesting. I had a great time listening to her, she's just so upbeat, fun, and authentic. Krystii Melaine on Art Dealer Diaries Podcast Number 193.

070: Creating Art & Finding Community with Courtney Senior

Mesmerizing doesn't even begin to explain what Courtney Senior does with a canvas and paint.

She is a Toronto-based artist, marketer by trade, and magician when it comes to making all my 80's neon dreams come true. This is in fact a true statement, one of her pieces hangs in my house and another in the clinic.

I have been in love with her work since she found her way into my Instagram Reels, and I became enamoured with who she is as a businesswoman by her open conversations around how she uses art to help cope with her anxiety.

Not only is she showcasing her own work online and shipping it all over the world, she is the founder of Art & Found Day, and helps other creative entrepreneurs understand how to build n art business without burning out.

We had a phenomenal conversation back in March, and I'm so excited to share it with you here.

Great Women of Art Ep. 4 (EN) - Maria Helena Vieira da Silva

Great Women of Art Ep. 4 (EN) - Maria Helena Vieira da Silva

Up until very recently, it was believed that abstraction was invented and practised solely by men. However, after re-examination, it seems like it was the other way around: many women abandoned figurative art, as did their male colleagues at the time, to singularly inhabit the vast continent that is art. Vieira da Silva is one of them. Her story is quite extraordinary. Her work was recognised very early on when she was in her forties. She received many prizes, the Grand Prix National des Arts in 1966 and the Legion of Honour in 1979. Her work has been shown worldwide and is now part of some of the most prestigious museum collections in the world: the Guggenheim in New York, the Tate Modern in London, and the Pompidou Centre in Paris. In short, Maria Helena Vieira da Silva is one of the rare female artists to have risen to fame during her lifetime.

Great Women of Art Ep. 3 (EN) - Louise Bourgeois

Sculpture has long been thought of as a technique reserved for men, and yet the most well-known and popular women artists of the 20th century were sculptors: Camille Claudel, Niki de Saint Phalle, Germaine Richier and the great work of Louise Bourgeois. What a strong character with a great sense of humour and high spirits! This is what we would like you discover about this extraordinary artist, who for so long worked in the dark, unnoticed, yet who never resented this.

Martha Braun: Abstract Expressionist Painter - Epi. 132 Host Dr. Mark Sublette

Martha Braun: Abstract Expressionist Painter - Epi. 132 Host Dr. Mark Sublette

I had Martha Braun on the show today. You know this is an interesting podcast for those who are into interior design. Martha was a world-class interior designer who had her own company in San Francisco for 25 years. She also built high-end spec homes and sold them in San Francisco but really found her calling in being an abstract painter. We get a different sensibility of somebody who's painting - not from a realistic standpoint - but a nonobjective one. I think anyone who likes art, whether it's traditional or contemporary, can take something away from this podcast about how you can find success and have a very successful career as an abstract painter. Her work has hung next to a Rothko and Georgia O'Keeffe painting at the University of Arizona Museum collection where one of her paintings is in their permanent collection.

In this episode, Andrew Herman speaks with Miami-based artist, Franky Cruz, who works with butterflies to create unexpected art pieces. Initially a graffiti artist, Franky shifted away from conventional painting in search of a non-toxic means by which to express himself creatively. This environmentally conscious move led him to learn how to repair butterfly wings, rear caterpillars successfully through metamorphosis, and how to work with these creatures to produce large-scale paintings; all in an effort to raise awareness and empathy for an organism weighing less that 1/5 of an ounce.
