The Drunken Night When Alexander the Great Burned Persepolis
Alexander the Great burned Persepolis to the ground during a night of drunken revelry, after being encouraged to do so by a Greek courtesan named Thaïs. It's said she told Alexander torching the royal palace would be among his crowning achievements, and it's said she inspired his soldiers and followers to take up torches. That is, at least, according to legend. Let's talk about the downfall of the Persian Empire and why anyone would have wanted to torch Persepolis.

Ouzo Talk - The Parthenon Marbles
There's no more contentious issue in modern Greek history than that of the Parthenon Marbles. Stripped from the Parthenon atop Athens’ Acropolis under dubious circumstances by Lord Elgin while Greece was under occupation, the Marbles were irreversibly damaged by Elgin's team, before being shipped to the UK where they were eventually sold to The British Museum – the place where they now reside. Greeks, non-Greeks, and Philhellenes the world-over want them to be returned to Athens where they can be reunited with the rest of the works from the monument in the Acropolis Museum.
Tom and Nick are joined by Founder and Chair of the International Committee – Australia – for the Restitution of the Parthenon Marbles Inc, Emmanuel John Comino AM, and committee member, lawyer and cultural heritage expert, Theodora Gianniotis to discuss the campaign to bring the Marbles home.

Pericles
Check out the full show notes here.
Pericles brought Athens to its peak, but ended his own life in a plague at the beginning of a long war with Sparta.
Third episode: A city of villages
Athens as a collection of villagers, refugees and outsiders. Few Athenians are so-called ‘True Athenians.’ Author and journalist Diane Shugart walks Sofka around the changing neighbourhood of Pangrati to discuss this, the ‘15-minute city’ and why the kiosk or periptero is so significant. Anthropologist Roxane Caftanzoglou reveals how Anafiotika, under the Acropolis, was built by islanders from Anafi. Refugees are nothing new in Athens. Historian Nikos Nikolaides unpacks the traumas of the Greek refugees fleeing Turkey in the 1922 ‘Catastrophe.’ From Armenians in Neos Kosmos to Syrians in Kypseli, where Marina Liakis discusses how she started the NGO Zaa’tar with its refuge and falafel café, Tastes of Damascus. At the Victoria Square Project there are community arts projects for all. Young director Niovi Zarambouka-Chatzimanou says, ‘We do not talk about refugees and migrants inside our space; we talk about neighbours.’
Trailer
Writer Sofka Zinovieff explores Athens in a quest to understand this complex, seductive city. She visits unusual places and meets Athenians, native and adopted: from singers, poets and graffiti writers to architects, journalists and chefs.
The Choice is Obvious
On today's episode of Public Resource Issues, Dave, Nastassia, and The Rest talk about a bunch of beverage concerns; how to clean the world's oldest beer out of a cold plate; the illegality of making real root beer; the provenance of fat-washed cocktails, and much more.
Plus, mushroom farming; the ethics of handling herbs at public gardens; some Searzall updates; and the all-important question of who matches with which Disney Princess.
