    Ancient Athens

    Ancient Athens

Ah Ancient Athens, the crown jewel of Greece. A beacon of philosophical enlightenment, birthplace of Democracy, and ass kicking factory of the ancient Persian Empire. The modern world owes more than a few thanks to the city named after the Goddess of War and Wisdom. BUT the road was always paved in gold, Greece was in an almost constant state of war between its Grecian neighbors vying for power, it was conquer or be conquer, so you might be wondering, in all this chaos, how did Athens find the time to revolutionize the world. Tune in and find out.

    Episode 200: Seismic

    Episode 200: Seismic

    (Intro & piano music)

Welcome to our 200th episode! This feels like a very weird time to celebrate, especially when the rescue teams in Turkey and Syria are making superhuman efforts. Do donate if you can whether it's goods or money and, I hope you enjoy today's word. Σείω (seio) in both ancient and modern Greek means 'I shake', 'I move'. Keep that, you'll need it.  There are many variations of how the leader of the giants, Ενγκέλαδος (Engelados), in the war against the Olympian Gods, was defeated. The most popular one is depicted in ancient jars and one particular moment , on a Parthenon metope. The moment when Athena threw her four-horse carriage on him.  After that, the myth says, she buried him alive under the mount Aetna in Italy were when he tosses and turns angrily, he causes a ΣΕΙΣΜΟ/ SEISMIC

Defying the British Museum to scan the Parthenon Marbles

Defying the British Museum to scan the Parthenon Marbles

They asked for permission. Permission was denied... but they did it anyway. That’s the predicament that Founder and Executive Director of the Institute for Digital Archaeology, Roger Michel, and Director of Technology, Alexy Karenowska found themselves in during 2022. Believing strongly that the British Museum didn’t have the right to deny their request to scan the Parthenon Marbles, both Roger and Alexy hatched a plan to scan the Marbles anyway, using only smartphones and iPads, and in full view of Museum staff. Not only did they manage to do it, the resulting copy of the Selene Horse in Pentelic Marble is an incredible example of what can be done by digital archaeologists, and the challenges it poses to traditional museums, committed to maintaining their collections. Roger and Alexy join Tom and Nick to re-tell the story, and discuss the 200+ year dispute between the UK and Greece, including the loud calls for the restitution of the Marbles to Athens.

Who Owns the Past? Featuring: Gypsy Price
Who owns the past? Why should we care about this question? How annoyed can James make a guest by comparing them to Indiana Jones or Lara Croft? In this episode I talked with Gypsy Price, a bioarchaeologist, about a lot of things. Topics range from her work in Greece, cultural resource management, what to do with a degree in archaeology, and why Britain should return the Parthenon Marbles to Greece. A Cave Made Out of Listerine! (35)

Caves are all the rage this episode... oh, and Alison teaches Lulu how to "Call the hogs!"

INTRO: (00:00) To all our listeners, if you feel like skipping around, or only want to listen to part of the show, check out our show notes. Each section has a time stamp, so you can skip around! Alison went on vacation - a real one! - for the first time, to Hawaii, and she shares some of the highlights from her incredible trip.

OBSESSIONS: (17:48) Lulu is obsessed with this luxe yet inexpensive Pre de Provence Lavender Soap. Alison is obsessed with sea turtles, after a connection to them on her Hawaii trip.

WISHLIST: (21:40) Lulu wishes for pizza to be calorie-free. While an imaginary wish, this whole podcast is imaginary so she can want what she wants! Alison is wishing for a Sushi Bazooka. Oh, and come to New York and see our show on September 8th!

ALISON’S 10K DAY - PARTHENON, ARKANSAS: (25:30) Alison picked this location solely based on the place she found on Airbnb. She uses Turo, which is like Airbnb but for vehicles. Breakfast at Neighbors Mill. On to Fayetteville for a pre-season football game in $4,000 club seats. Go, Razorbacks! Lunch at the Low Gap Cafe. Next Alison stops at Herbhome Farm for some herbs, veggies, and goat milk soaps. Back at the cave, she calls a cook dinner at the cave, using her herbs and veggies from earlier. Then she takes a bath with her new goat milk soap. Lulu is impressed she was able to spend as much as she did in Arkansas.

LULU’S 10K DAY - JUNEAU, ALASKA: (37:29) Lulu books a place on HomeAway. If you go to Alaska, you’ve got to go look at glaciers. Not for the faint of heart, or the ill-equipped, Lulu goes shopping for some supplies. Among other things she gets Leki Trekking Poles, Sisley Nutritive Lip Balm, and these North Face Etip Gloves (gotta be able to selfie with these views!). She heads out on this Mendenhall Glacier Trek. Then for a luxury whale watching tour. You have to listen to know why she has three Quarter Pounders, one each for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
