Tune in to my recent experience of costuming overwhelm, show-week commitments and 2 weeks sick with the flu that lead to me falling behind in a big way. PLUS ++ See below!!

86: Keeping our Children Safe with Kristi McVee

86: Keeping our Children Safe with Kristi McVee

Content Warning: This episode contains material that is sometimes confronting and disturbing. Sometimes words can cause sadness or distress or trigger traumatic memories for people, particularly survivors of past abuse, violence or childhood trauma. If you do need support, please reach out to lifeline on 13 11 14 anytime for confidential telephone crisis support.

ABOUT THE SHOW: Kristi McVee spent 10 years in the police force as a specialist child interviewer and a detective Senior Constable. When she retired from the force, Kristi believed there was a better way to help by taking a proactive approach, rather than a reactive approach. Now she is the author of 'Operation Kids Safe' (a detectives guide to child abuse prevention). She's also the Director of 'Cape AU', which stands for child abuse prevention and education in Australia.

For us who are teacher's and business owners that work with children, we have a duty of care to our students and for that reason, I believe this is an important discussion to have, even if uncomfortable at times. Though it may not be for everyone. Thanks for tuning in.

84: A Regional Studio's Challenges and Triumphs, with Carla Tierney

84: A Regional Studio's Challenges and Triumphs, with Carla Tierney

Carla Tierney is a brave and resilient Studio Owner from a small country town about two and a half hours north of West Brisbane, Australia. A town known for mining, meat works, and farming, that has a high level of the community on social benefits.

In this episode of 'Business, Arts and All That Jazz', we talk about what life is truly like for regional and country studios.

Carla has had the trifecta when it comes to challenges, including a decrease in mining which majorly effected the local work opportunities and clients. Her area also experienced a drought, which meant that cattle farmers and crop farmers were unable to produce, again, leaving the community financially vulnerable. Then, came the a pandemic, which is a story we all know too well.

Despite all of the challenges of regional studio ownership, she also shares the the beauty of country life and how the community comes together. She loves her town, community and business and it was a privilege to catch a glimmer into Carla's life and bright, fighting spirit.
