182// How to Get the MOST Out of Your Health Insurance in 2024, with Dr. Marc Downing

182// How to Get the MOST Out of Your Health Insurance in 2024, with Dr. Marc Downing

If you have been sick and have been trying to navigate health insurance to get the MOST out of your health insurance while paying the LEAST, you know that health insurance is a total BEAR.

Health insurance can be a TOTAL pain in every regard. It can be a pain to find providers who take your insurance, it's a pain to be told your insurance will cover one amount and later you get charged a totally different (usually much higher) amount. It's a pain that insurance doesn't cover many things that we WANT it to cover, things that will ACTUALLY help you heal.

Why is insurance this way? And how can you actually use your health insurance to make it work for you, instead of feeling like you're fighting it all the time?

This conversation is NOT about insurance reform, or even politics or voting.

This is about, with the system EXACTLY the way it is right now, what can YOU do to still get the healthcare you want or need?

To host this conversation, I had a conversation with a special guest that I am SO excited to introduce you to - my father!

Dr. Marc Downing is a pediatric surgeon in Southwest Michigan who has been working in healthcare and the hospital system for more than 25 years. He's seen a LOT of shifts in healthcare not only through his career as a physician but also throughout the last 100 years of healthcare that he's studied. Dr. Marc Downing has a deep passion for seeing everyone be able to receive healthcare and to have to turn NO ONE away due to financial problems, but he also sees first-hand a lot of the problems that our current healthcare system creates for individuals and the system itself as someone who both has health insurance and someone who has to deal with it on a daily basis with his patients. Dr. Downing also shares some of his unique wisdom he's gleaned on different ways people approach getting healthcare through his experiences doing international surgery and also with working with communities in the U.S., such as the Amish, who inherently have no access to health insurance.

How are people getting healthy in the U.S. and around the world, with or without health insurance, and how can you take your current situation (regardless of your healthcare insurance status) to still get better health outcomes for you and your family?

We're tackling all this today, and more.

Also, to note: this episode pairs really well with last week's episode with financial expert Katherine Pomerantz where we discuss Katherine's top tips to make your health more affordable. Check out her episode, 182// How to Make Health More Affordable with Katherine Pomerantz!

    19. Jeff Lundberg, Owner of Babe Farms, Cultivating Quality and Commitment in Gourmet Produce, Loyalty and Innovation, Farming Success, Family Legacy, and much more.

In episode 19 of This is Ag Podcast, I had the honor of speaking with Jeff Lundberg, the face of Babe Farms, a family-owned and operated company that has been working with UnitedAg for over 25 years. It is truly remarkable to see how Jeff has taken over the business from his mother, Judy, and maintained its amazing culture for over 40 years. Babe Farms is a leader in the gourmet produce industry, prioritizing superior quality, innovation, and genuine customer relationships. Tune in to hear stories from the worlds of Star Wars, Coca-Cola, and beyond!

During our conversation, we delved into various aspects of Babe Farms. It all began with their inspiration from the beautifully crafted produce found in Europe, which led them to grow into the outstanding company they are today. From vibrant carrots to golden beets and purple kohlrabi, Babe Farms produces eye-catching and stunning gourmet quality foods that go from farm to table. Their commitment to innovation has resulted in the success of their organic farm, conventional farm, and the specialty farm known as Babe Farms. (see https://www.babefarms.com/)

One thing that sets Babe Farms' apart is their focus on their employees. They truly prioritize their team members, fostering a strong sense of loyalty and commitment. Respect is at the core of their values, and every individual is treated with respect from day one. Babe Farms has cultivated a culture of appreciation and recognition, treating their employees as an extended family. They celebrate milestones together, provide benefits like 401k and health insurance, and organize events to express their gratitude.

Through my conversation with Jeff, I gained valuable insights into the workings of the farming industry. His passion for the business is evident, especially when he talks about the rewarding experience of witnessing the entire process from seed to harvest. Jeff embodies the values of a true farmer, being a steward of the land and a community-oriented business owner. I commended Babe Farms for their remarkable accomplishments, growth, and commitment to their employees and customers. It was an absolute pleasure to have Jeff on the podcast and learn more about the extraordinary journey of Babe Farms.

Dr. Keith Smith: Redefining Healthcare through Capitalism

Dr. Keith Smith: Redefining Healthcare through Capitalism

In this episode, Vivek Ramaswamy hosts Dr. Keith Smith, who elaborates on the concept of affordable healthcare provision by circumventing traditional insurance and government interventions. He emphasizes the benefits of capitalism in the healthcare industry, highlighting the way his practice provides affordable, quality services, charging a fraction of the traditional hospital costs while remaining profitable. This practice has garnered attention from patients nationwide and beyond. Furthermore, Dr. Smith sheds light on the burgeoning wave of free market alternatives within healthcare, with more medical professionals and institutions adopting this model. He provides insight into his innovative transparent pricing model which disrupts traditional insurance industry norms, with many patients finding his all-inclusive prices financially advantageous. He also touches on the growth of cost-sharing ministries as a plausible alternative to traditional insurance. Lastly, Dr. Smith passionately advocates for the repeal of government laws and regulations that skew the market in favor of industry insiders, leading to distortions that affect the delivery of healthcare services.

We were joined by Mel Blatt, Founder and CEO of indipop, where she led a talk on The Most Affordable Health Care Options For Entrepreneurs to help shed some light on health memberships vs. traditional health insurance.  Each year the number of people leaving their job to go out on their own increases. In many cases that means leaving behind health insurance. Currently there are over 57 million freelancers and solopreneurs in the US.  And due to the effects of Covid 19 there is a rise in lay offs from full time employment, as a result there is a loss of health benefits.  It can be a confusing and stressful time trying to access and afford benefits with no one helping navigate this unchartered road, thus why she created indipop. We also talk about how Founders Live and indipop have partnered to bring this option to many entrepreneurs around the US.

Kevin Kraef about Accessing Affordable Healthcare

Kevin Kraef about Accessing Affordable Healthcare

On this week of The Sci-Files, your hosts Chelsie and Danny speak with Kevin Kraef, a Junior at MSU's James Madison College and Eli Broad School of Business majoring in International Relations and Supply Chain Management. Kevin conducted his research on behalf of MSU's Institute for Public Policy and Social Research (IPPSR) directed by Dr. Matthew Grossman. In the past year, he investigated the effects of earned income tax credits (EITC), child tax credits (CTC), and publicly funded programs like Medicare and Medicaid in providing Americans with affordable healthcare. While examining these programs and their implementation in various states, Kevin also compared US programs to those in other countries like Germany, Switzerland, the UK, and South Korea to observe any differences in cost distribution, quality of treatment, accessibility, and patient satisfaction. Finally, Kevin focused on understanding and finding a solution to disadvantaged communities and their lack of access to affordable healthcare in the US by comparing different systems and poverty reduction methods from Michigan, Massachusetts, Texas, and California and other countries, specifically Germany and the UK. The results of the research demonstrate that in order to provide affordable healthcare for the majority of the US, a combination of EITC, CTC, and public programs like Medicare and Medicaid would be most effective alongside current private health insurance providers in our current system. However, in exploring other systems, a total reform towards a more universal system has a more promising outlook on providing equal access to affordable healthcare for all, including disadvantaged minority communities while providing varying degrees of cost burden on the taxpayer base.
