The Sage Sayers: I Refuse To Call Myself “Seasoned“

The Sage Sayers: I Refuse To Call Myself “Seasoned“
Too many bright and gifted professionals worry about their age when it comes to their jobs, their stability, and any risks they’re willing to take in their last decades. I read about this feeling in the business media. I hear about it often when clients request my help with bios, resumes, and LinkedIn profiles. I’m going the other way, especially when it comes to “resume speak” and any narrative on my work and offerings. At age 52, having reinvented a few times across multiple industries and continents, I’m rejecting the word “seasoned” because I find it diminishing.

In this week’s Sage Sayer’s podcast, I’m reading my article published on Medium on why and how words like “seasoned,” “tenured,” or “experienced” can build fixed mindsets within and restrict and exclude us from whatever comes next. You’ll find my article here. Join the conversation on LinkedIn here.

Diversity and inclusion: understanding language and terminology

Diversity and inclusion: understanding language and terminology

Understanding the vocabulary of diversity & inclusion is an important first step towards ensuring the concepts or ideas that sit behind the language are applied when working with older people. In this episode we explore the language and terminology used in the diversity and inclusion space and provide some straightforward explanations, examples and definitions. Specifically, we look at language around diversity, inclusion, equity, equality, fairness, belonging and intersectionality and we ask the question is there a difference between equity and inclusion, why are people talking about intersectionality, what is it and do I really need to know about it?

Access and cultural safety for older LGBTI people

Access and cultural safety for older LGBTI people

Creating equitable and culturally safe access to services for older Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender or Intersex people requires us to understand and respond to the access barriers experienced by the LGBTI community. At both an organisational and personal level, this means implementing real change that addresses the history of inequity and discrimination to create environments that are welcoming, safe and inclusive for older LGBTI people.

In this episode the ESDT team chat with Pauline Crameri and Andrew Rogers from Val’s LGBTI Ageing & Aged Care. Pauline and Andrew discuss the historical experiences of older people and importantly, the contemporary relevance of these experiences when accessing services. The podcast provides practical tips and examples that will help you to progress the implementation of real change based on safety, trust, and authentic respect.

What Exactly Is Ageism And How To Beat Back Aging Myths With Writer And Advocate Ashton Applewhite

What Exactly Is Ageism And How To Beat Back Aging Myths With Writer And Advocate Ashton Applewhite

Writer and leading spokesperson for the emerging movement to raise awareness of ageism, Ashton Applewhite, is with me to help us recognize the stereotyping of people or groups of people based on their age. We talk about how to begin dealing with this bias through Acknowledgement, Integration, and Activism.

There is so much in this episode, but some of the topics include:

    • What is ageism?
    • Is there a divide between young and old?
    • How does culture teach us to feel about age and aging?
    • How does fear drive "the machine" and pit ages against each other?
    • When do we start to become biased?
    • How do we begin to start overcoming this bias or prejudice?
    • What is "age appropriate"?
    • What does someone AGE tell you about them? What does it not tell you about them?
    • How important is it to push back the myths of aging, especially as a group?
    • How do we push back these myths?
    • How important is it to make friends of all ages?
    • How do we age well?
    • What example can we set for our children and how can we keep from being ageist against them and others their age?

    Chip Conley: Modern Elder

    Chip Conley: Modern Elder

Chip is a major thought leader in our space, and luckily one of our good friends. He has been instrumental in the early days of the creation of AGEIST. We last profiled him a few years ago, and since then he created the Modern Elder Academy in Baja, now with over 800 graduates. Why are all these people ages 30-80 flocking to Chip and his school? What is the life phase Chip refers to as middle-essence? What are the essential qualities of being a successful and happy elder today? Chip and I have a lively discussion investigating the impact he is making with his school with people of all ages.

    Norma Kamali: Visionary Fashion Designer

Norma, 74- the legendary designer and one of the earliest champions of wellness and the importance of having a healthy immune system. She innovated the cutout bathing suit, the sleeping bag coat, developed her clean skin care line in the early 1990s, and then opened her wellness cafe in NYC in 2001 putting her at the forefront of what is now a global movement for healthy living. We learn how she feels about beauty today, how that has changed, the negative effects of social media, and of course her thoughts on ageism being the most raw of the isms. We learn about how her routines have evolved with age, and how important authenticity is, versus covering up who we are. She has been meditating for decades and exercising daily, which is how she stay so vibrant in such a pressure filled business. When we look at Norma, we think, I'll have whatever she is having.
