    Issue #2 out 3/13/2024

    1. Declan Shalvey and Drew Moss, thanks for joining us on the AIPT Comics podcast! To start, the reception has been great for Thundercats, were you guys taken aback?
    2. Tell us about your personal histories with this franchise!
    3. How do you approach reworking or redesigning a classic character? (Love Tigra’s mustache!)
    4. The first issue acts as a bit of a remix of the original pilot, but the ending takes a big swing. Now you’re introducing new characters! How did you decide on this approach?
    5. What can fans look forward to with the introduction of Calica?
    6. Are there any classic series characters we shouldn’t expect to see?
    7. There seems to be a boom for 80s nostalgia with Thundercats, Transformers, etc, why do you think that is?
    8. Now that you’re a few months into writing and drawing the series, do you have a favorite character, maybe one that surprises you?

    Shredruary: Streets of Fire

    Shredruary: Streets of Fire

It’s February, so that means it’s time for the AIPT Movies podcast’s “Shredruary” series! Where we cover movies that revolve around music or musicians! In this week’s episode, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss iconic genre director Walter Hill’s 1984 Rock n’ Roll Fable, Streets of Fire!

A scary biker gang led by an unnerving-yet-alluring Willem Dafoe! A terrifying Ed Begley Jr.! Infectious music from Jim Steinman, Ry Cooder, Dan Hartman, Stevie Nicks, The Blasters, and Boston-based new wave band, Face to Face! Diane Lane looking incredible while playing one of the greatest fictional rock stars of all time! A story out of time, transporting you to a world that feels both nostalgic and somewhat futuristic (for the time it was released at least)! A sonic and visual feast, this movie was made for fans of noirs, cars, and motorcycle bars!

In addition, Alex shares his spoiler-free thoughts on the new Aaron Eckhart action movie, The Bricklayer, and the South Korean revenge thriller, Ballerina!

    1. Nicole Maines, thank you for being on the AIPT comics podcast for the second time! Nathan and I are big Dreamer fans and have been greatly anticipating your graphic novel for some time, but to start, Suicide Squad: Dream Team is out March 12, can you talk about putting together this very unique lineup for the team?
    2. You’re so good at capturing the different voice of each character, I particularly liked Waller, how do you approach writing dialogue?
    3. Dreamer is still getting acquainted with her powers, some of which we get to see in new ways thanks to Eddy Burrows in the first issue. Is her acclimation to her powers a central part of her character growth?
    4. Shifting gears to Bad Dream, a true origin story for our hero, was there a guiding light as far as its focus and tone?
    5. We’re Galaxy stans here at AIPT. Tell us about your convos with Jadzia Axelrod when it came time to incorporate Taylor in the book! How fun was it writing Kat, Yvette, and Taylor?
    6. The ball in Bad Dream is one of the most joyful things I’ve seen in a comic book. Did you draw on any of your own experiences in building a found family or friend group in this section of the book?
    7. Did you and Rye do a lot of back and forth coming up with the unbelievable outfits and crowd scenes here? Take us through your collaboration in general! The dream sequences are gorgeous too.
    8. If Bad Dream was a song, what would it be and why?

    Shredruary: Josie and the Pussycats

It’s February, so that means it’s time for the AIPT Movies podcast’s “Shredruary” series! Where we cover movies that revolve around music or musicians! In this week’s episode, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss 2001’s satirical musical comedy, Josie and the Pussycats!

Endless product placement! A classic and catchy soundtrack that features Letters to Cleo’s Kay Hanley and (we think) Matthew Sweet! A consistently funny movie that effortlessly bounces between witty, subversive moments and silly, slapstick comedy! Fun, creative direction from Can’t Hardly Wait’s Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont! A perfect cast that includes Rachael Leigh Cook, Rosario Dawson, Tara Reid, Parker Posey, Alan Cumming, Missi Pyle, possibly the greatest boy band of all time, Dujour, and the vocal talents of Mr. Moviefone! A misunderstood, ahead of its time gem - with a sweet message about being true to yourself and not getting caught in the cogs of consumerism - that has found the cult following it deserves despite its disappointing box office!

In addition, Tim shares his spoiler-free thoughts on 1988’s Alien Nation and the Oscar-winning cinematographer of Cool as Ice, while Alex talks about Shin Ultraman, Knight and Day, The Beekeeper, and Sniper G.R.I.T.!

    5. For anyone who has faced a natural disaster be it a hurricane or tornado, the trauma and emotions these characters go through feels so real and genuine. Have you gone through something like this, albeit less sci-fi in nature?

Interview: Zac Thompson (artist Daniel Irizarri) Out February 20 - CEMETERY KIDS DON’T DIE #1 – a near-future descent into a terrifying digital world where each new level has killer consequences! Plunging deep into the uncanny borderlands between science fiction and horror

    1. Please welcome Zac Thompson, your sixth time on the show! To start, Cemetery Kids Don’t Die is out February 20th, blending a 21st century future, with a gaming system called Dreamwave. Where did the idea for this series start?
    2. Cemetery Kids Don’t Die is such a great title, did you have it settled right off the bat or did it come organically as you were crafting the story?
    3. There’s an organic nature to Dreamwave, it looks like a creature you put on your head, how important was it for you to have an organic approach to this tech?
    4. Without knowing the dangers of Dreamwave, would you boot up into a system like this one?
    5. Dreamwave feels like an organic (sorry for the pun) direction for a game like Baldurs Gate 3 to evolve into, how much research went into gaming be it RPGs and fantasy to develop this story?
    6. Back in December AIPT exclusively revealed designs by Daniel Irizarri. Can you talk about the process of crafting the looks of the in game characters and the characters playing the game?
    7. I think fans of D&D will love this, there’s a heavy vibe of that going on, do you play D&D and if so, what’s your favorite character class?
    8. You’ve talked before on this show about your mood board, what sort of movies, tv, or comics did you have up while writing this series?
    9. If Cemetery Kids Don’t Die was a song what would it be and why?
    10. Zac, do you have any other projects you’d like to plug today?

Uncannuary: The Crow, Favorite Movies of 2023

It’s January, so that means it’s time for the AIPT Movies Podcast’s “Uncannuary” series! Where we cover movies that feature superheroes or vigilantes, either adapted from comics or created specifically for the big screen! In this week’s episode, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss the 1994 supernatural-action-bummer-noir, The Crow!

An iconic soundtrack! A city so dangerous and depressing it’ll make you want to move to Gotham! Terrifying, heartless villains! Amazing cinematography and production design! Great action and stunts, including what may be the best rooftop-running scenes of all time! Ernie Hudson, Michael Wincott, David Patrick Kelly, Tony Todd, and what would have been a star-making performance from the late Brandon Lee! A borderline miracle in terms of quality (considering the mid-production tragedy), this dark, sad, somewhat funny, and surprisingly sweet story gives you a totally different kind of comic book movie!

In addition, Matt, Tim, and Alex share their favorite movies of 2023!

Uncannuary: Guyver: Dark Hero and Rebel Moon

It’s January, so that means it’s time for the AIPT Movies podcast’s “Uncannuary” series! Where we cover movies based on comic books or original ideas with similarly “superhuman” characters! In this week’s episode, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss the martial arts/creature FX direct-to-video classic, Guyver: Dark Hero!

Some of the greatest laser-graffiti you’ve ever seen! A pulsating neck wound! Squibs! Theme music that will live in your brain for days after watching! Ancient alien lore that almost makes Ridley Scott’s Prometheus look like a more expensive remake with fewer jump kicks! A borderline miracle of low-budget cinema filled with charm and glorious fight choreography! One of the original “soft reboots,” packed with incredible creature FX - including the stunning Guyver suit - all brought to you by FX legend and director Steve Wang! Are you currently surrounded by people who are secretly giant monsters called Zoanoids? This movie probably won’t help you confirm, but it can’t hurt to try!

In addition, Matt shares his spoiler-free thoughts on Leave the World Behind and Saltburn, while Alex does the same for Ferrari, Rebel Moon: Part One - A Child of Fire, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom!

Interview: Joshua Williamson, Tom Reilly - Duke #1 Out December 27th

    1. Thanks for being on the AIPT Comics podcast, to start, when did you guys get the call, aka conscripted to join the Duke project?
    2. Did you get to put your own take on it, completely free, or was there a starting point given by Robert Kirkman or Hasbro?
    3. As someone who loved the toys but only remembers the cartoon lessons that ended episodes I have to say this first issue is exciting. A thriller, what made you take this angle on Duke?
    4. Tom, there’s a lot on your plate, from recreating classic vehicles to possibly updating costumes and looks. What has been the most fun to take on?
    5. Probably an impossible question, but did you have a favorite GI Joe growing up?
    6. There’s a definitive color story going on here via Jordie Bellaire, the crips oranges lend a certain feel. What is the team going for with how this book is colored?
    7. The GI Joe haters might say, “this property is just a bunch of human soldiers without powers running around.” What do you say to them?
    8. It’s well known at this point the Decepticons will be acquiring energy via Cobra, or in some capacity that is what’s going on. It’s early yet, but how do you integrate a multi-story robot into a gritty espionage story like Duke?

Holidanger: Batman Returns & John Woo’s Silent Night

It’s December, so that means it’s time for the AIPT Movies podcast’s “Holidanger” series! Where we cover the best kind of holiday movie: the ones where lives are on the line! In this week’s episode, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss Tim Burton’s surprisingly dark and adult Christmas-themed sequel, Batman Returns!

Incredible production design that brings the snowy and fantastical Gotham City to life! One of Danny Elfman’s greatest scores! (Mostly) relatable villains the audience and even Batman can sympathize with! Michael Keaton, Danny DeVito, Christopher Walken, and a movie-stealing performance from Michelle Pfeiffer! Finally, a superhero movie with multiple scenes that take place on rooftops! A relic from a time when superhero movies had to appeal to wide audiences without relying on fan service! A misunderstood sequel with horror elements, adult themes, and a mini rom-com hidden within that’s finally getting the appreciation it deserves!

In addition, Alex shares his spoiler-free thoughts on The Holdovers and Godzilla Minus One, while both Alex and Tim talk about John Woo’s return to American action cinema with Silent Night!

    1. Jason, thanks for joining us on the AIPT Comics podcast again! Batman Off World #1 is out now, conratz on pulling off a compelling and different kind of Batman story!
    2. As far as pitches are concerned, was Off World your first pitch to DC?
    3. The story picks up with Batman only 1 year into his tenure as a superhero, what were the factors in setting the story at this point in time?
    4. I saw you had mentioned in a previous interview your love of Atari Force, is there any desire to ask DC to dust it off and give you a whirl writing a new series?
    5. There’s something so primal about how you write Batman, reminding me of Batman vs. Predator in some respects. What goes into writing Batman in a state of constantly improving on himself?
    6. There are a lot of different alien races in Batman Off-World, one of which is the Branx created by Marv Wolfman, George Pérez, did you have to dig deep into your research to pick which aliens to add to the story?

    10. Do you have a favorite Bizarro story?
    11. John Timms brings a lot of dynamic action in the first issue of the story arc, is there a panel or page where he blew your expectations away?

    1. Kyle, thanks for returning to guest on the AIPT Comics podcast! To start, you’re a busy guy who has written so many kinds of stories, and with Pine and Merrimac out in January I’m curious, how long has this story been kicking around in your head?
    2. I love a wife guy. Any chance we’ll see more of their first case together?

    9. If detective agency Pine and Merrimac had to take on a case with Peacemaker OR Wild Dog, would they take it?

In this week’s episode, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss Richard Donner’s surprisingly dark and funny modern retelling of Charles Dickens’ Christmas classic, Scrooged!

A wonderful cast that features Bill Murray at what may be his all-time scummiest! A fake Lee Majors action movie! Bob Goulet's Old Fashioned Cajun Christmas! Timeless special effects mixed with classic Hollywood cinematography! The best interpretation of A Christmas Carol that doesn’t include Muppets! A perfect Christmas movie that captures the spirit of the season while also being oddly terrifying, funny, and deep! A mashup of several genres that leaves you feeling warm and fuzzy while also scaring the “Dickens” out of you!

    Xenovember: Alien: Covenant

In the first ‘Xenovember’ episode of the AIPT Movies podcast, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss Ridley Scott’s second prequel to his 1979 masterpiece, Alien, the divisive sci-fi horror film, Alien: Covenant!

Yet another wonderful score! Moments of true tension and chaotic horror! Beautiful cinematography and production design! Some of the worst vicarious back pain you’ll ever experience! Questionable character decisions mixed with solid performances and compelling human drama! Michael Fassbender in dual roles that are equally riveting and perfectly contrast each other! One of the most iconic flute-related scenes/lines in movie history! Somewhat unclear musings on the dangers of artificial intelligence and the concepts of sentience, creation, life, and death! Was this simply a way for Ridley Scott to make a quick buck and ensure funding for future projects? Does the demystification of the xenomorph continue to harm the series? Would Alien: Covenant be an easier watch for non-Alien fans?!

In addition, Tim shares his spoiler-free thoughts on Death Becomes Her, while Alex briefly discusses Talk to Me, Killers of the Flower Moon, and David Fincher’s new Netflix movie, The Killer!
