Shocktober part 2: Tales From The Crypt: Demon Knight

Shocktober part 2: Tales From The Crypt: Demon Knight

In this year’s final “Shocktober” episode of the AIPT Movies podcast, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss one of the better examples of a TV show-turned-movie, the bloody and surprisingly fun, Tales From The Crypt: Demon Knight!

Single-location horror! Impressive practical FX and gore! Countless quotable lines! Fun bookends from the Crypt Keeper himself! A loveable cast that includes Dick Miller, William Sadler, CCH Pounder, Jada Pinkett-Smith, and Billy Zane in his greatest role! Unnecessary sexiness! A wonderful-yet-failed cinematic experiment not unlike Tarantino and Rodriguez’s Grindhouse! Comic booky demon lore and mischievous ghouls that would pair well with the Evil Dead series! Possibly accidental Aliens and Terminator vibes! A delicious mix of horror, camp sensibility, and action tropes, this movie has it all! Did we mention how good Billy Zane is?

In addition, the gang give spoiler-free thoughts on several Halloween-season viewing options, such as: An American Werewolf in London, The Howling, Samuel Bodin’s Cobweb, Critters, Frankenhooker, The Frighteners, Trick ‘r Treat, 1980’s Prom Night, 2015’s We Are Still Here, The Collector, The Collection, and Saw X!

    Shocktober: Bram Stoker’s Dracula

    Shocktober: Bram Stoker’s Dracula

In the season 3 premiere of the AIPT Movies podcast, Alex, Tim, and Matt give their first spooky season viewing recommendation, Francis Ford Coppola’s love letter to classic gothic horror, Bram Stoker’s Dracula!

Intense drama and doomed romance! Surprisingly horned up characters! A stacked cast that includes Gary Oldman, Winona Ryder, Anthony Hopkins, Cary Elwes, Richard E. Grant, Sadie Frost, Tom Waits, and a charmingly miscast Keanu Reeves! Iconic use of shadow gags! An unstoppable juggernaut of old-school VFX, stunning creature makeup, and impeccable costume design! Beautiful, colorful cinematography! All around expert craft that truly makes this a “filmmaker’s film!”

In addition, Alex shares his spoiler-free thoughts on his favorites from this year’s Fantastic Fest: The Toxic Anger remake, Strange Darling, Suitable Flesh, V/H/S/85, and Totally Killer!

    Full Contact (1992) Season Finale!

In the season finale of the AIPT Movies podcast, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss Chow Yun-fat’s OTHER Hong Kong action classic from 1992, Full Contact!

Greasers! Rock n’ roll action! Extreme dance sequences set to the sound of the band Extreme! Analog bullet time! Great stunt falls and finger gore! An incredible cast including the legendary Chow Yun-fat, Simon Yam, and Anthony Wong! Directed by Ringo Lam before he came to the states and started working with Jean-Claude Van Damme! Colorful and over-the-top villains! Some of the most mean-spirited camp you’ve ever seen that somehow leaves you feeling alive and rejuvenated despite all the violence and horror!

In addition, Alex shares his spoiler-free thoughts on Meg 2: The Trench, The Last Voyage of the Demeter, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and the Sharksploitation documentary!

    Unbreakable & Barbenheimer

    Unbreakable & Barbenheimer

In this week’s episode of the AIPT Movies podcast, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss M. Night Shyamalan’s tale of real-life superheroes and comic book mythos, Unbreakable!

Perfectly balanced horror, tension, and comedy! A wonderful cast that includes Robin Wright, a magnetic Samuel L. Jackson, and Bruce Willis in one of his greatest roles! A fantastic (and occasionally pretty funky) score from James Newton Howard! Graceful camera work and effective use of color that helps define the characters and story! One of Shyamalan’s best movies and one of his best twist endings! All that and more in this movie that helped pave the way for the modern superhero genre, and is secretly about how you can never be happy if you’re not true to yourself!

In addition, Tim and Alex share their spoiler-free thoughts on Barbie, Oppenheimer, They Cloned Tyrone, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem!

Body Parts (1991) & Mission Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One

In this week’s episode of the AIPT Movies podcast, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss the movie that asks “what if Hitchcock were gross?” The body horror film, Body Parts!

A car accident scene that traumatized young minds years before Final Destination 2! Great music and opening credits! A breezy runtime! An exciting physical therapy montage! One of the strangest uses of a water tank you’ve ever seen! Poorly attached limbs! A solid cast that includes Brad Dourif, Kim Delaney, and Jeff Fahey smoking his brains out! The suspense of a Hitchcockian thriller, but with the gore of a far schlockier B-movie! Where does evil live? In the soul? In the blood? Watch this movie for a confusing answer!

In addition, Tim and Alex share their spoiler-free thoughts on Mission Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One, while Tim passes along a recommendation for Johnny Mnemonic: In Black and White from his wife Chrissy!

Prometheus, Asteroid City, & Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

Prometheus, Asteroid City, & Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

In this week’s episode of the AIPT Movies podcast, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss Ridley Scott’s prequel to his own 1979 masterpiece, Alien, the somewhat controversial sci-fi horror film, Prometheus!

A fantastic and hauntingly hopeful musical score! A stacked cast that includes Michael Fassbender in one of his greatest roles! Incredible production design and cinematography! A horrific self-surgery scene for the ages! A surprisingly timely warning about the potential dangers of artificial intelligence! A movie that may have been viewed as a modern classic if not for the baggage of a connected franchise! Is this yet another example of the folly of de-mystifying the enjoyably mysterious? Is the exploration of humanity’s hubris, and insatiable desire for more, perfectly told through a technically unnecessary prequel? Listen now to find out!

In addition, Matt and Alex share their spoiler-free thoughts on Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny!

Interview: Interview: Matt Bors & Ben Clarkson - Justice Warriors

    1. Matt Bors, Ben Clarkson, thank you for being on the AIPT comics podcast. First off, congratulations on the second printing of Justice Warriors! For our listeners, what’s the elevator pitch for this series?
    2. Every page is full of interesting background bits. Dudes with clown noses, graffiti that says “Hell is otter people.” How much of this is in the script and how much is going buck wild while illustrating a page?
    3. On that same note, how often do you find yourselves going back to add “just one more” detail?
    4. With the creative juices flowing at various stages of layouts, how far did Justice Warriors steer from the original outline or plan by the time you reached the end?
    5. The Prince is less of a villain and more of a goober. Was it important to you to have an authority figure like this in the book?
    6. I noticed fun references to pop culture, like the Arnold Schwarzenegger and Carl Weathers handshake, is there any reference or gag in the book you hold particularly dear to your heart?
    7. If you handed this book to someone in the bubble, I feel like it’d read like perfect JW propaganda. Was that a tonal goal here?
    8. Horoscopes play a huge part in Justice Warriors, are either of you into horoscopes, or maybe the opposite, despise them?
    9. Are either of you a Libra?
    10. If a Justice Warriors 2 was crafted, who might the threat be this time?
    11. Matt, for those who don’t know, you ran The Nib for 10 years, a twice named a Pulitzer Prize finalist. Likely a sensitive topic, why are you closing shop now?
    12. When can we expect the final issue to land at our doorsteps (after we buy it from thenib.com)?
    13. It’s way too early I’m sure, but if The Nib continued in some format, where or how might we see The Nib?

In this week’s episode of the AIPT Movies podcast, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein’s action-thriller-comedy, Game Night! The true story behind rich people fight clubs! Surprisingly sturdy glass tables! Impressive thriller-inspired mood and cinematography! A script full of twists that keeps subverting your expectations! Consistent comedy that is actually driven by the characters and story! An incredible cast which includes Jason Bateman doing what he does best, Kyle Chandler having a blast, Jesse Plemons stealing scenes, and Rachel McAdams turning in yet another classic comedic performance!

In addition, the gang shares their spoiler-free thoughts on Midsommar, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, and Robert Rodriguez’s Hypnotic, while Alex reveals that he recently rewatched parts 4-9 of the Fast Saga!

    Hard Boiled (1992), Air, & Fast X

In this week’s episode of the AIPT Movies podcast, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss John Woo’s Hong Kong action classic, Hard Boiled! A musical score that makes you wanna drive around a city in a convertible! Shockingly complex coded messages! Chow Yun-fat as a true artist in the fields of clarinet and twin pistols! Tony Leung as one of the coolest guys in cinema! One of the most impressive book-finding accomplishments in the history of libraries! One of the most heroic babies you’ve ever seen! The introduction of inspector Tequila into the halls of all-time action cops, alongside Dirty Harry and John McClane! Some of the best camera work in action movie history! A movie that’s really about how difficult it is to make friends as an adult, with a grueling production that surprisingly yielded one of the greatest action movies of all time!

In addition, Alex enjoyed Ben Affleck’s Air, while Fast X really revved his engine!

The Island (2005) & Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

The Island (2005) & Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

In this week’s episode of the AIPT Movies podcast, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss Michael Bay’s relatively timid dystopian science fiction thriller, The Island! Bay trying his best to restrain himself during dialogue scenes, but going full-destructive-madman during the intense action scenes! A stacked cast that includes a playful Ewan McGregor, Scarlett Johansson at the edge of mega stardom, Sean Bean possibly dying again maybe, and a career-best performance from Djimon Hounsou! All that and more in this legitimately compelling (and possibly too prophetic) story that has a fairly shocking narrative twist if you don’t already know what the movie is about!

In addition, Tim quickly recommends Clive Barker’s Lord of Illusions, while Alex gushes about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3!

The AIPT Movies podcast brings you the latest in movie news, reviews, and more! Hosted by supposed “industry vets,” Alex Harris, Tim Gardiner, and Matt Paul, the show gives you a peek behind the scenes from three filmmakers with oddly nonexistent filmographies. You can find Alex on Instagram and Twitter @ActionHarris. Matt is a terrific artist that you can find on Instagram @no_wheres_ville. Tim can’t be found on social media because he doesn’t exist. Kids vs. Aliens, Dungeons & Dragons, and Light & Magic

In this week’s episode of the AIPT Movies podcast, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss Jason Eisener’s science fiction-horror-adventure-comedy, Kids vs. Aliens! A fantastic cast of young actors! Curse words being wielded like beautiful weapons in a way that would make Shane Black proud! Jason Eisener and Director of Photography Mat Barkley showing the world how to make a visually beautiful movie with a modest budget (nominate it for best cinematography, you cowards)! A movie that’s sure to feel nostalgic to anyone who spent their childhood making movies with their friends! All that and more in a fun, unafraid, and surprisingly sweet addition to the “kid adventure” movie genre alongside Goonies and Monster Squad - that often feels like it was directed by a younger, schlockier Steven Spielberg!

In addition, Tim and Alex saw and enjoyed Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, and Alex tries to convince everyone to watch the Disney+ documentary series about the iconic FX company ILM, Light & Magic!

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

In this week’s episode of the AIPT Movies podcast, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss the often-maligned fourth entry in the beloved action adventure series, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull! A fantastic cast, including a scenery-chewing Cate Blachett! That magical Steven Spielberg visual storytelling that’s present in even his lesser movies! Vibrant cinematography from the one and only Janusz Kaminski! New supporting characters who feel like they could’ve been there all along! Harrison Ford slipping back into character like he never left! Do all these positives outweigh the somewhat awkward presence of Shia LaBeouf and other supposed faults, such as the infamous “nuke the fridge” moment? Listen now to find out!

In addition, Alex saw (and enjoyed) two movies from actor/directors: Creed III and the Vietnamese martial arts movie, Furies!

Brotherhood of the Wolf, Scream 6, and John Wick: Chapter 4

In this week’s episode of the AIPT Movies podcast, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss the wonderfully-unique French period action horror film, Brotherhood of the Wolf! An unforgettable revenge-rampage scene! Homages to Predator and Jaws! Extraordinary costume design! Atmospheric visuals from John Wick 4 and Nightmare Alley cinematographer Dan Laustsen! Twists and turns that keep you on your toes! A fantastic cast that includes an exceptionally creepy Vincent Cassel, and action star Mark Dacascos in one of his best roles! Gothic horror and martial arts action inexplicably blended together in one perfect package!

In addition, Alex saw and enjoyed Scream 6, but his heart belongs to John Wick: Chapter 4.
