The FTX co-founder and Alameda CEO didn’t hold back at SBF’s trial (Chain Reaction)

The FTX co-founder and Alameda CEO didn’t hold back at SBF’s trial (Chain Reaction)

This week, we have a bonus mini episode where Jacquelyn talks with TechCrunch+ editor-in-chief Alex Wilhelm to dive back into the Sam Bankman-Fried trial and what has transpired in its second week.

Major witnesses who were involved in the downfall of FTX and its sister company Alameda testified like Gary Wang, CTO and cofounder of FTX, and Caroline Ellison, CEO of Alameda.

The two of them plead guilty to a number of charges and could face maximum sentences of 50 to 110 years, respectively. It’s also worth noting Wang and Ellison testified as part of a cooperation agreement for pleading guilty.

Jacquelyn and Alex talk about key points from the trial, anecdotes that you can’t read on a transcript and what she anticipates from both the prosecutors and defense going forward.

Want more? Here’s the latest on the SBF trial:

Michael Lewis Explains It All: The SBF Trial, Crypto, and his new book Going Infinite

Michael Lewis Explains It All: The SBF Trial, Crypto, and his new book Going Infinite

Michael Lewis is like a literary Forrest Gump. He always seems to know where the biggest story of the year is going to be–and he’s usually halfway through a book about it when it breaks. This time he couldn’t have gotten the timing better: his book Going Infinite: The Rise and Fall of a New Tycoon came out the same day as Sam Bankman-Fried, the book’s subject, went on trial in the aftermath of the collapse of his crypto exchange, FTX, and Alameda Research.

So thank goodness Michael is here, because there are enough acronyms in this fascinating story to make your head spin–not to mention getting your head around the blockchain. In this conversation Michael takes us from his first impressions to his hard-won insights into SBF and his motivations, mistakes, and the mayhem he’s been at the center of. He also takes the time to talk us through the Effective Altruism movement that underpinned SBF’s ideology and explains the ins and outs of FTX’s rise–and the details of how it collapsed, taking billions in net worths along with it. He also hints at how that money might not be so gone after all.

Number Go Up: Inside Crypto’s Wild Rise & Staggering Fall with Zeke Faux

On the day of publication, Bloomberg investigative reporter Zeke Faux, joins us to discuss his new book Number Go Up. Zeke followed Crypto’s wild ride with a ring-side seat including being inside SBF’s penthouse as the fallen crypto king faces his imminent arrest. In 2021, all the numbers went up. Billionaires were minted overnight. Crypto would change the world; former presidents and prime ministers lauded SBF as the next Steve Jobs, and stable coins would forever change banking. Commodity traders set up crypto desks. And then it all crashed. Will history view crypto as the world’s biggest ever bubble -  the mother of all madness of crowds - fueled by low-interest rates and bored investors stuck in lockdown? And what about those stable coins like Tether… has the real crash yet to come? Zeke Faux is an investigative reporter for Bloomberg Businessweek and Bloomberg News. He’s a winner of the Gerald Loeb Award and the American Bar Association’s Silver Gavel Award and a National Magazine Award finalist.

Frank-ly, the Kardashian method won’t work for SBF

Frank-ly, the Kardashian method won’t work for SBF

This week, Natasha was joined by Mary Ann Azevedo and Rebecca Szkutak to talk about the latest and greatest in tech:

    • Deals of the week include Inflow, which has developed a self-help app designed to help people manage their ADHD, Cartograph Ventures, a new venture fund run by an ex-Juul operator, and the latest lawsuit and layoffs happening over at Carta
    • The plethora of fintech M&A that took place this week, including Fidelity's acquisition of a startup called Shoobx (we couldn't pronounce its name either) and Deel's buyout of Capbase.
    • Microsoft's deal with ChatGPT OpenAI which, we'll admit, has a structure that stumps even us. Plus, we talk about how Pittsburgh's expertise in AI may help give its startup scene a boost.

There's Sam Altman, and then there's Sam Bankman-Fried, which brings us to our last theme. We talk about SBF's new Substack, the Kardashian method of distraction and why the legal world isn't a fan of levity. As Becca said so aptly, maybe billionaires (or former billionaires) should stop trying to be cute.

We'll end with a reminder that the TechCrunch podcast network is now a machine that produces content, daily, from the most diverse slate of hosts in the tech pod world. Proud of our fellow co-hosts, and for those of you who may be starting a resolution or habit-stacking to start 2023, consider giving our other shows a try.

    The Case Against Sam Bankman-Fried

    The Case Against Sam Bankman-Fried

Sam Bankman-Fried has been arrested, accused of engineering “one of the biggest financial frauds in American history.”

In a Department of Justice indictment unsealed on Tuesday, Bankman-Fried has been charged with eight counts including conspiracy to commit wire fraud on customers and lenders, money laundering and violations of campaign finance laws. Bankman-Fried, who was arrested in the Bahamas on Monday, faces years in prison if convicted.

The charges point to a long-running scheme to misappropriate the deposits of exchange customers to pay debts and expenses of Bankman-Fried’s private trading firm Alameda Research and to make investments. The conspiracy ran from 2019 — the year he founded FTX — until its collapse last month, according to the complaint.

The SEC and The CFTC have also charged Sam Bankman-Fried
