EP 18: George Mumford & Tyler Lapkin

EP 18: George Mumford & Tyler Lapkin

In this episode George Mumford sits down with Tyler Lapkin of the Joseph Campbell Foundation.

George Mumford's deeply moving personal story is unforgettable. An aspiring basketball player at the University of Massachusetts (where he roomed with Dr. J, Julius Erving), injuries forced Mumford out of the game he loved. The medications that relieved the pain of his injuries also numbed him to the emptiness he felt without the game and eventually led him to heroin.

After years of making meditation on and off the cushion the center of his life and getting clean, Mumford enrolled in Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn’s Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction program and collaborated with him to create the Inner-city Stress Reduction Clinic in the early nineties.

When Michael Jordan left the Chicago Bulls to play baseball in 1993, the team was in crisis. Coach Phil Jackson, a long-time mindfulness practitioner, contacted Dr. Kabat-Zinn to find someone who could teach mindfulness techniques to the struggling team—someone who would have credibility and could speak the language of his players. Kabat-Zinn led Jackson to Mumford and their partnership began.

Mumford has worked with Jackson and many of the teams he coached to become NBA champions. His roster of champion clients has since blossomed way beyond basketball to include corporate executives, Olympians, and athletes in many different sports.

    25. The Great Reemergence

The big news is revealed. Plus, how do you pull yourself out of a creative funk? What have I been doing since my last recording?
Just the act of freely expressing oneself, even if only to oneself, is extremely liberating. If you stick with it until the steam subsides, you just might get to the root of the issue.

Danny Jarvis - Lost In Lockdown 02072020

In celebration of our 300th podcast episode, I am thrilled to share a profoundly emotional and poignant set from 2020. Throughout the initial Covid-19 lockdowns, I had been delivering 'Lost In' sets each week, but this particular set marked the grand finale of that period. While the 'Lost In' project continued for another two years following this date, this set, in particular, encapsulated the very best tracks I had been playing over the course of three months.

For those who accompanied me during those marathon DJ sessions, listening to this set will undoubtedly evoke intense emotions and memories. And for those who are experiencing this set for the first time, it will be difficult not to sense the profound emotional state I was in during that particular period of our existence. In times when hope seemed bleak, Lost In provided myself and the listeners an opportunity to escape for a few hours and unite, using music as our medicine.

So sit back, enjoy, and let us celebrate the fact that we made it through. Together, we experienced the power of music to uplift and carry us through the most challenging times.

Deciding What to do With Your Life

Deciding What to do With Your Life

What is leading your actions?   Is it desire, or the feeling that you are suppose to do something?

Fear and societal expectations lead us to build a life around things that we may not have chosen intentionally. This keeps us in a pattern of doing things we don't want to do, in order to get to the things we actually want to do.

"If you say that getting the money is the most important thing, you'll spend your life completely wasting your time. You'll be doing things you don't like doing in order to go on living, that is to go on doing thing you don't like doing, which is stupid."
    - Alan Watts

    23. Out of the Darkness Light Emerges

    23. Out of the Darkness Light Emerges

She is here! The light has emerged out of the darkness.
All things are held in a state of balance. Picture the Chinese symbol of Yin Yang. Equal parts black and white, which chase one another in a circle infinitely. They coexist. They are intertwined. Not a single thing is exempt from this. There is a dark side to everything light, but there’s also a light side to everything dark. There is always a positive with a negative. We see it in electrical currents.. We see it in the breath, the in flow and out flow as the heart pumps blood throughout our bodies. These energies exist in every single atom with electrons and protons. These atoms make up the entire existence of everything. Nothing is exempt. So why should we be surprised when this constant up and down manifests throughout our lives?

Is Music for the Listener or the Player?

Is Music for the Listener or the Player?
We are all performing our life in front of an audience - everything we do in life affects others. So is your life for you or for the people you affect?

Your life is always about the people you affect - but the first person you affect is you.

In today's episode, we are considering a metaphor about music as it relates to life.

“It’s self-full to be first, to be as good as possible to you. To take care of you, keep you whole and healthy. That doesn’t mean you disregard everything and everyone. But you want to come with your cup full. You know: ‘My cup runneth over.’ What comes out of the cup is for y’all. What’s in the cup is mine. But I’ve got to keep my cup full.”
    - Iyanla Vanzant

    I hope you enjoy!

    MYSTICISM: WHAT IS IT?

    MYSTICISM: WHAT IS IT?

A mystical experience, similar to the "enlightenment" described by Buddhists and other contemplative practices, involves a disillusion of self and a sense of unity with something grander than ourselves.  We  describes this something-grander-than-ourselves, in various ways - as God, as Tao, as the natural order and so on.

In this episode we explore the following topics

    • Common characteristics of a mystical experience
    • Iain McGilchrists hemisphere hypothesis
    • An account of a mystical experience from Clare Booth Luce
    • Introverted and Extroverted types of unity
    • The power of metaphors: "The Kingdom of God," as an example
    • No Self: the disillusion of self.
    • Mathieu Ricard and Wolf Singer's book Beyond The Self
    • Different approaches to enlightenment, Buddhist, mystical and hemispheric
    • Unity with God (etc.) is a process of becoming.
