    The Crow review

    The Crow review

When someone makes a list of the best 90s movies, this week’s movie is usually on the list. I bring you my review of classic, The Crow. The Crow was Brandon Lee’s final film. He sadly was accidentally killed on the set of The Crow. He was famously precluded in death by his father Bruce Lee, who also died far too early in life. We still got a masterful performance by Brandon Lee as Eric Draven, who comes back from the dead to avenge his, and his fiancée’s, murder. He goes up against some slimy baddies led by the murderous and twisted Michael Wincott as Top Dollar. He gets help from a cop played by Ernie Hudson and his friend Sarah played by Rochelle Davis. The action, the drama, the tension is all accompanied by a edgy, hard-hitting lineup of tracks that enhance it all. Join me to do a deep dive on this dark classic. The Crow also stars David Patrick Kelly, Jon Polito, Bai Ling, Tony Todd, Sofia Shinas, Anna Thomson, Angel David, Laurence Mason, Michael Massee, Bill Raymond, Marco Rodriguez and Kim Sykes.

Uncannuary: The Crow, Favorite Movies of 2023

Uncannuary: The Crow, Favorite Movies of 2023

It’s January, so that means it’s time for the AIPT Movies Podcast’s “Uncannuary” series! Where we cover movies that feature superheroes or vigilantes, either adapted from comics or created specifically for the big screen! In this week’s episode, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss the 1994 supernatural-action-bummer-noir, The Crow!

An iconic soundtrack! A city so dangerous and depressing it’ll make you want to move to Gotham! Terrifying, heartless villains! Amazing cinematography and production design! Great action and stunts, including what may be the best rooftop-running scenes of all time! Ernie Hudson, Michael Wincott, David Patrick Kelly, Tony Todd, and what would have been a star-making performance from the late Brandon Lee! A borderline miracle in terms of quality (considering the mid-production tragedy), this dark, sad, somewhat funny, and surprisingly sweet story gives you a totally different kind of comic book movie!

In addition, Matt, Tim, and Alex share their favorite movies of 2023!

You can find AIPT Movies on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. As always, if you enjoy the podcast, be sure to leave us a positive rating, subscribe to the show, and tell your friends!

    Cabiria & Steamboat Bill, Jr.

    Cabiria & Steamboat Bill, Jr.
This episode, we decided to give voice to the voiceless by spotlighting two sizable monuments in the silent film canon: Cabiria and Steamboat Bill, Jr. First things first though...our Blue Plate Special broods over two moody genre flicks with 1994's The Crow and new release Infinity Pool. Upon inspecting cinema's earliest days, we discuss the strained theatrics of Cabiria, the slight hilarity of Steamboat Bill, Jr., and the clearly observable influence both movies had on not only their respective genres but on the development of cinema writ large. The Crow (1994) - Retrospective

    The Crow (1994) - Retrospective

Once upon a midnight dreary, while we pondered, weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious comic of forgotten lore—
While we nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at our chamber door.
“’Tis some visitor,” we muttered, “tapping at our chamber door—
    Only this and nothing more.”

    IT WAS THE CROW, BITCH!

    "The Crow": Caws for Remembrance

    "The Crow": Caws for Remembrance

The 1994 comic book film "The Crow" has a famous and heartbreaking history. Its star Brandon Lee — son of Bruce Lee — was tragically killed in an on-set accident. Because of this, the film was edited down with much of its expository material removed, and the result was a tight and haunting story with an iconic lead performance. Sarah and Raf note that it's hard to watch Heath Ledger's Joker in "The Dark Knight" and not think of Lee's Eric Draven.

That doesn't mean "The Crow" is a perfect film. As much as Raf loved it, he admits that it's "the most 1994 movie ever made," but celebrates what a landmark it was for the comic book movie industry. The gore and violence made Sarah hesitate to embrace the film, as did the cheesiness. The villains' names "sound like something from a PBS children's television show," she says, adding that their "Fire It Up" dance "feels like they're just really excited about going to regionals."

Yet "The Crow," for all its flaws, remains important to both hosts. It's an extraordinarily well-edited film, it helped popularize "Hot Topic" (For real! Kind of!), and its soundtrack was essential for goths and non-goths alike. Plus, the film's message about how "real love never dies" hits them right in their still-teenage hearts. In Sarah's words, "It's so important that it doesn't need to justify its existence. To ask if it holds up is sort of belittling how important it is."

(Bonus content: Sarah's beloved dog Verona, who passed away in May 2019, spends a lot of time walking around, flapping her ears, and licking Raf's face in this episode. At the time of recording, the hosts thought she felt unsettled by the film's sad background and was driven to move around a lot. Now, her noise is a sweet reminder that — as the film's characters keep saying — real love never dies.)
