E114: 13 Questions Answered by an Autistic 13 Year Old

In this episode, weshare thirteen questions posed to a 13 year old boy with autism who ia able to articulate his answers with such incredible insight. These questions along with many more can be found in the book "Why Do I Jump" by Naoki Higashida. We talk about how this insight helps us understand how Bryce may be feeling and how he may be experiencing ways in a completely different way than we do. It has created some  thought provoking talks in our home and will be a tool that we keep on hand for future discussions with Bryce as he learns to express his thoughts and feelings more clearly. Although there is progress and improvement, we still do quite a bit of decoding and guessing about what he is trying to tell us.

E113: How Do We Help Bryce Improve His Social Interactions?

In this episode, we talk about ways that we are trying to help Bryce with social interactions and all of the ups-and-downs that come with it. It's not always easy to discern how far to push him when he has resistance. His physical safety is our top priority. We also are mindful of his emotional safety and his anxiety. We want him to be comfortable around other people and to learn how to have simple, meaningful conversations that are not about Super Mario and friends.

We also talk about his baptism at church and his  Special Olympics Gymnastics competition.

We also have a "real conversation" about this past week's reading consultation for Bryce and how we worked through a very rare disagreement that had us both in tears because of our hurting hearts for Bryce.  We were also hurting for each other. Autism is  not an easy journey to travel. If feelings and hurts are buried, they will eventually erupt.

Lastly, we shared Bryce's new Etsy Store information: ARTIGRAPHSforAUTISM. Bryce is creating paintings to sell for a new refrigerator. Ours is too boring for him. With the holiday season upon us, we are helping him with his project.

ModifyHealth in the Food as Medicine Industry + How MenuTrinfo Certifies Products as Allergen-Free

ModifyHealth in the Food as Medicine Industry + How MenuTrinfo Certifies Products as Allergen-Free

ModifyHealth, a leader in the burgeoning food as medicine industry, recently released four new meal plan offerings catering to a variety of dietary needs in the US. In this episode of the Xtalks Food Podcast, Sydney talks about these new plans, which were introduced in response to the increasing demand from consumers managing specific medical conditions including celiac disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and beyond. Food as medicine refers to a philosophy that promotes the use of whole foods, nutritional therapy and diet modifications to prevent, manage and even treat certain diseases and health conditions. It often integrates a more holistic view of health, considering not just the physical body but also emotional, mental and environmental factors. With the launch of these new meal plans, ModifyHealth solidifies its reputation as a frontrunner in the food as medicine industry. The team questions the validity of these meals plans and the food as medicine industry but commend ModifyHealth for taking a different approach in a crowded market.

Also in this episode, Sydney talks about MenuTrinfo, a private company that established its own certification programs to indicate that certain food products are free from specific allergens. MenuTrinfo operates a heavily vetted ‘Certified Free From’ scheme with standards that have raised the bar for allergen-free products. The brand emphasizes on the necessity for continuous surveillance and every outlet undergoes frequent and quantified testing based on the allergen risk it poses. MenuTrinfo addresses cross-contamination by mandating that an outlet or manufacturing facility implements a robust and verified allergen control plan. Overall, MenuTrinfo’s ‘Certified Free From’ certification is an initiative that stands at the intersection of consumer safety and industry transparency, paving the way for a safer, more informed marketplace. The team applauds the work of private organizations that prioritize food safety but criticizes the government for not being able to implement such robust labeling schemes themselves.

E107: The Challenges of our Crazy, Busy Schedule + Bryce Shares his Vacation Highlights

In this episode, we talk about the long list of activities and services that we have to prioritize and schedule as we roll into Bryce's 4th grade season. It is NOT easy at all. In addition to his school education, each activity and therapy also has significance for Bryce. As his parents, we also recognized the importance of scheduling time for ourselves as a couple and as individuals, too.  We also are making sure that we schedule family time on Sundays for our special fun time with Bryce in our home. It's not always easy to manage with doctor appointments or other unexpected needs popping up, but we do our best and continue to learn that we are working on Bryce's timeline which does not mirror his peers' school timeline. It's definitely new territory for us!

This episode also has Bryce talking about his highlights from our mountain vacation! He asked me when we would be doing a podcast, so he could talk to all of you.

Bryce is a funny, mechanical, HAPPY little guy who was diagnosed with autism at age two and is now nine years old. His pure joy makes this world a much better place!

If you are enjoying the show, please take a quick moment to give us a rating and review to help other families find our podcast, too.

We are humbled and honored to follow our calling and be Autism Ambassadors while helping others understand our world a little more than they did before listening to the podcast. We also feel called to bring light to a community that has experienced dark days after the "diagnosis". (Luke 1:79)
