From Four Roses to Bourbon Babies: A Bourbon Adventure

From Four Roses to Bourbon Babies: A Bourbon Adventure

Picture this: A summer evening, the air filled with the scent of cigars, and in your hand, a glass of the finest bourbon. This was the setting where our paths crossed with our guest, CT, a bourbon connoisseur at the Bourbon and Cigars event. Since then, our friendship has grown, nurtured by our shared love for bourbon. This episode is reminiscent of that magical evening, as we explore the intriguing world of bourbon.

Bourbon, for us, is more than just a beverage. It's a shared experience, a bond builder, and a path to unforgettable friendships. CT shares his journey, starting from his first taste of bourbon, honing his palate, to the relationships he has forged within the industry. We navigate through the maze of Four Roses' mash bills and yeast strains, and discuss the different distilleries, their unique influence, and the stories they tell through their bourbon.

Feeling adventurous? We dive into the exciting realm of bourbon collecting and barrel picks. The thrill of the hunt, the patience it requires, and the joy of discovery, makes this a rewarding journey. We also explore the work of Alan Henderson at French Leg, his use of Lost River in the barrels and his unique pot stills, painting a vivid image of his craft. Finally, we traverse into the world of small batch bourbon whiskey, the delicate balance between the standard small batch and the uncut unfiltered. So tune in, pour yourself a glass of your favorite bourbon and join us in this fascinating conversation about all things bourbon.

For generations, independent bottlers have been part and parcel of the UK whiskey scene, yet they've not been as commonly seen in the whiskey industry in the United States.

But this is all about to change with the first release from a new American independent bottler called Lost Lantern.

To understand what Lost Lantern is, what they are about to release, and exactly what it means to the U.S. whiskey scene, we talked to the founders, Nora Ganley-Roper and Adam Polonski.

My tasting notes from this episode can also be found below:

    Spirit A - E.H. Taylor Four Grain Bourbon 2018 (50% ABV)

    Appearance

    • Clarity: Clear
    • Intensity: Medium
    • Color: Amber
    • Suggested texture: Medium > high

    Nose

    • Condition: Clean
    • Intensity: Medium > pronounced
    • Aroma characteristics: Butterscotch, Ginger bread, vanilla cream, caramelized apple, all spice, cloves, dried apricots, dried orange peel, pecan nuts, toasted/dry oak
    • Other notes: Has a dusty/dry sensation to it. Like a toasted oak/sun dried oak type sensation. Very little char sensation on the palate but there was the burnt sugar note.
    • ABV: ~55%

    Palate

    • Sweetness: Dry
    • Texture: Warming, mouth filling, Medium > high viscosity
    • Intensity: Pronounced
    • Flavor characteristics: Oak, burnt toast, all spice, cloves, black pepper corn, licorice, leather, hints of vanilla and caramelized apples + some floral notes after water added
    • Other notes: Lost a bit of the dried fruit notes, but gained the barrel aging notes much more clearly.
    • Finish: Long and complex (Oak, cloves, licorice)

    Appearance

    • Clarity: Clear
    • Intensity: Medium
    • Color: Amber
    • Suggested texture: Medium > high

    Nose

    • Condition: Clean
    • Intensity: Medium
    • Aroma characteristics: Oak, sweet corn, caramel, baked apples, pie crust, leather, ground cinnamon, crushed cloves, nail varnish

    • ABV: ~55%

    Palate

    • Sweetness: Dry
    • Texture: Watery, low > medium viscosity
    • Intensity: Medium
    • Flavor characteristics: Oak, leather, cloves, black pepper corn, very little hint on those baked apples + sweetness grows with water
    • Other notes: All the spice and burn sits on the tongue, doesn’t follow through. Feels like higher ABV but doesn’t carry the burn, just more tongue swelling.
    • Finish: Medium with some complexity (Oak and black pepper corn)
    • ABV: ~60%

    Conclusion

    • Quality level: Very good
    • Blind guess: Bourbon, younger than spirit A
