#78: You Gotta Get a Gimmick

Gimmicks are elements of a game that are the fundamental selling point, the core attention grabbing mechanic or experience that the game is built around. This episode, we're breaking down gimmicks in board games, figuring out if they're good or bad for the hobby, and talking about some of the most notable. Before we cave to flashy marketing, we also talk about Are You A Robot?, Jaws, and FUSE.

Mos Def, Marvin Gaye and Amerigo Gazaway Bring The Funk To Apple.

Hip Hop impresario Amerigo Gazaway is one of my favorite music producers. He reworks samples and records so that his songs transcend both original recordings. Furthermore, an Amerigo Gazaway albums tell a story, like LP's did back in the vinyl days. Moreover, it's his love for his source material and his authenticity that resinates with listeners. Bombarded with cease-and-desist letters for sampling, it all changed when Apple chose his Mos Def/Marvin Gaye retooling into a "Yasiin Gaye" song "You Are Undeniable" for a commercial. (Click the link to get on iTunes.) It's the first unauthorized mashup to be used for a major brand, and a landmark breakthrough for hip hop.

Watch this Apple Computer TV spot "Jason's Verse" to hear the funky "Yasiin Gaye" track.

Amerigo schools me on sample trolls, copyright law, his process and the Brazilian "Cannibalist Manifesto". Near the end of our chat, he turns the tables and asks me about the selection of music for film and commercials.

Please send me your feedback and any filmmaking questions to RespectTheProcessPodcast@gmail.com today.

    Thank you,

    Jordan

    44-Final Voyages of Vespucci

    44-Final Voyages of Vespucci

The fourth voyage to the west did not turn out to be of any great importance. Being left behind by the captain, Vespucci and the men that remained would catch birds with their hands and build a fortress.  The fifth and sixth voyages of Vespucci were not intended to be expeditions of discovery, nope..  load those ships with gold and pearls.

    43-Third Voyage of Vespucci

    43-Third Voyage of Vespucci

This voyage would change how the world was viewed, Mundus Novus or “New World” but, who cares, where is that passage to the orient?

If you would like to read the letters of Vespucci you can find them at: http://mith.umd.edu/eada/html/display.php?docs=vespucci_letters.xml

    41-The Beginnings of Amerigo Vespucci

    41-The Beginnings of Amerigo Vespucci

How could I talk about the discovery of America without involving this man, Amerigo Vespucci?  His history relies so much on two letters written to a friend.  He mentions a book that would cover the accounts of his voyages, a book never written?  Or just never published and remains in someone’s deep dark cellar?  You can find the letter describing his first voyage at http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/mod/1497vespucci-america.asp
