What's going on guys?! Been a few weeks since I dropped an episode. Unfortunately I had to have surgery last week so I've had to put new episodes on pause for the last 2 weeks. Fear not, I will be back to ripping episodes in the next week or two.

For now, I wanted to throw up an old Voice & Rizzles episode with the amazing Lauren Malinowitzer. She had come by to speak to John Pignetti and I about her experiences with being an amputee. Her story is an amazing one and an episode I won't forget, thus making it important to re upload for all of you to enjoy and share.

Sibongile Mongadi, STEM Innovator, Founder, Uku’hamba, Improving The Lives Of Amputees Across Africa

On today’s episode we are going to continue our virtual global road trip over to the country of South Africa, to the Soweto township of the city of Johannesburg, and meet up with Ms. Sibongile Mongadi, Founder of Uku’hamba Pty Ltd, a start-up company that focuses on biotechnology and healthcare manufacturing with a goal of improving lives of amputees across Africa. Uku’hamba is a 100% black youth women owned company and Uku’hamba means "To Walk" in Zulu. Utilizing 3D printer and 3D scanning technologies, she has dedicated her career to developing prosthetic limbs that can be widely and cheaply manufactured. Her mission is to ensure prostheses are made available to anyone in need, greatly increasing the independence of amputees who may not currently be able to afford them. Ms. Mongadi has been designated as one of the top emerging innovators across Africa in 2018, named in the Inspiring Fifty’s class of 50 South African Women of 2019, and as a Top 100 South Africa Shining Stars for Science & Technology in 2019. When the Covid-19 pandemic struck South Africa, she redirected her company’s efforts to manufacturing safety equipment for front line workers. She has also worked with 3 other young innovators to build a contact-less thermometer sensor and hands-free, hand sanitizer system used in schools and corporate locations in the fight against COVID-19. Ms. Mongadi is also the founder of the Soweto Young Women Empowerment initiative that seeks to shape young women to be leaders in different spheres of society. Outside of this, she is also the chief marketing officer at Club Readership, a publishing company which seeks to celebrate African stories, who's work ignited a drive to open a library in rural Eastern Cape which saw her collect hundreds of books for needy pupils in the province. Ms. Mongadi has been educated at Cape Peninsula University of Technology and University of Johannesburg.

    Staying Active As An Amputee

    Staying Active As An Amputee

Hello and thank you for joining us on this podcast episode!

This week we’re diving into a subject that we truly feel does not get enough attention especially if you are a senior. Staying active as an amputee.

Whether you have a loss of a leg, both legs, an arm or other areas of your body it is still just as important to remain active and reap the benefits of the many workout options available to you.

For this discussion, Meredith talks about why it’s so important to stay active and what we can do to shed more light on this topic as it covers many people across the globe.

We feel it is so important to bring this subject to the forefront and we hope you agree.

In This Episode You Will Learn:

1). What are common reasons that an amputation can occur in both lower and or upper body.

2). What should be a good mindset when going into a workout as an amputee and how thinking differently will create more opportunities to try workouts that you think you might have been able to do.

3). Why your core is probably the most important area of the body when you are missing and arm or leg and how it can help balance you when exercising.

4). Why you can still use resistance bands for upper body and other types of resistance and learning how to fasten them safely so you can still benefit from using them.

5). Some of Meredith’s tips on how to approach a new workout and the importance of listening to your body as you go through the movements.

6). Meredith’s advice for trainers and people who work with amputees and why it’s important to first listen to you clients and understand their needs first before diving into a workout program.

    ///

Thank you again for joining us on this important podcast episode! As you can hear from this discussion, Meredith is passionate about being a resource for exercise and fitness for all and definitely includes amputees.

Hopefully this discussion inspires you to get active if you are an amputee and want to get in better health or if you know someone who is, we are here for you!

    Til the next episode.

Challenge Athletes Foundation Disabled is not Unable

Challenge Athletes Foundation Disabled is not Unable
In 1994, an effort to help one man launched a global change in the way athletes with physical challenges are perceived and perceive themselves. Jim MacLaren was an exceptional athlete, first as an amputee and then as a quadriplegic. After losing his leg in a motorcycle accident, Jim became a pioneer, achieving feats that others never thought possible for amputees. Jim may no longer be with us, but his legacy lives on through Team CAF. Challenged Athletes Foundation vision is to be a recognized leader in a movement through which physically challenged athletes are accepted and respected at the same level as able-bodied athletes, to have a great and significant impact on each physically challenged athlete served, and to reach out to the physically challenged community by providing inspiration, awareness and mentoring. CAF is proud to have played a pivotal role in changing the world's perception and acceptance of those with physical challenges. This is an amazing organization!
